Don't encourage me! I am thinking about calling the guy just to have a look... I may end up hating it, after all. :innocent:

Dippity-Do! I looooved that stuff. I was also an avid reader of Young Miss, Bop, Tiger Beat and, when I got all cool and moody when I was 15, along came Sassy. Ahhh, Sassy, how I loved you.

Is it weird that my cat is enjoying watching the US/Canada women's curling event?

I'm not a good person to encourage one to refrain from buying stuff. I'm great at rationalizing unnecessary purchases.

Yeah, have a look!

Aw! I remember that stuff.

I also liked the Aussie "3-minute miracle" stuff. (Or was it 2-minute?)

I had a green vat of Dippity-Do that was about 99 cents. I was delighted to see it advertised in Young Miss (anyone remember that rag, before it became YM (Young & Modern)? Man, Young Miss sounds so old-fashioned. I'm getting old! :crying:

Oh dear god, someone PLEASE stop me from buying another car. Pretty much my ideal next car has come up on Craigslist for a measly $1800 obo. It's a 1968 Mercedes 250 S, with a 2.8L engine. It's in the colour I want. I have wanted one of these big hulking vehicles for some time, right around this vintage because they look big and scary like they might say "I'MMA GONNA EAT YOU!" I want a big scary car. Bruce said if I buy it he'll sell his Honda and buy the Snorus from me for at least what I paid for it.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I don't need another car. But I want one! :crying:

Buy it! :star:

Ha! I used to be a devotee of Aqua-Net Super Hold in high school and the first couple of years of college. Nothing like it to create architectural structures.

I used it too. My hair is very thick, so it was difficult to get the 80s bangs to hold for more than 10 minutes or so. Aqua Net was better than most of the hairsprays out there, at least in terms of sheer hold and stickiness--and it was cheap! And when my grandmother came to stay with us during the summers, the supply tripled.

It's TOUGH love Muffin. :star:

And this is for the Empress of Groovy -- tell Joyce I found her shampoo and conditioner at the 99-cent store in North Hollywood (shut up, I can get Sheba cat food there for 59 cents a tin).

I didn't even know they made Tame anymore, but apparently they do.

Sweet! I haven't seen Tame in years. I'm glad to see they haven't changed the logo.

Joyce, of course, wouldn't touch Tame because it would interfere with her helmet altitude. However, she does understand that some people like it and, most important, feel groovy after using it. :star:

Joyce does endorse Aqua Net (perhaps also at the 99-cent store!).

Non-uppity n00bs get the full-on Maven love bomb. Uppity n00bs get thermonuclear breath! And me stamping about and making scary "RAAAAAAR!" noises! And if I want to make it super-scary I will fish out some of my vintage 80's outfits and dress up in a peplum skirt and Flashdance-style top.

Heh, I'm finally friending people after all this time. I wanna show the world my love!

That's a fine idea! Perhaps I'll go on a friend-adding frenzy myself! Starting with the babes in this very thread.*

Those were some fun times....I always imagined the nefarious things people with un-name-checked names could get up to while waiting for the FBI computer to work properly and give them their clearance, completely making the whole process a farce. Personally I wanted to fly a plane into the the Missouri National Benefits Center.

Now I perused the site before I signed up and asked my first stupid question which is thankfully lost to the pre-2006 purge.

I read it quite a bit too before signing up. I remember being scared of it--the hysterical tone of the threads, bossy know-it-alls, etc. And I think the horrifying glittery signatures (lovely Joyce is exempt, of course!) reached a peak in about 2006. I finally signed up when we were toward the end of the K-1 process because there was a delay between packets 2 and 3 that had us worried. I feel I need to come clean: The husband referred more to britishexpats during that time (*gasp!*). He has a VJ account but hasn't used it in quite a while.

I'm not sure what my first post was, but I did have a rambling post early on encouraging people to take a chance and keep working between EADs. (We faced this very dilemma--Jon was between EADs for about three weeks, I think.) I'd talked to my friend's sister who works for DHS, and she said not to worry about it if the first EAD had been approved and the second was in process. Of course, I got jumped on for encouraging people to do illegal things that would jeopardize their very existences. I remember LaL coming to my defense, bless her.

I hope there's another purge soon, because I know I posted a lot of nonsense in 2007 and 2008 before my (semi)retirement from participating in political threads.

oh yes, back in the day.....I can't believe I have been reading this forum for nearly 5 years.

Tell me, do people still get stuck in AOS name check hell as we did?

I'm not sure...I haven't looked in the AOS thread for quite a while, but I seem to remember the name check thread becoming buried and then brought back every so often. I don't think people are waiting for years anymore tho... I recall a bunch of approvals around the time my husband's was approved (early 2008). I remember there were a couple of people who'd waited for four years (at that point, we'd been waiting for about two). And renewing those interim benefits at great expense..what a pain in the ####### that was! Actually, Sunday is the two-year anniversary of my receipt of the hallowed AOS approval e-mail! I fear that Jon will get stuck again when he applies for naturalization because it wasn't clear whether his name check was cleared, or they just finally approved cases that were waiting on the name check. I read somewhere that the rules were changed because the backlog was enormous, and a bunch of cases were finally approved w/o the name check.

I just noticed that I signed up two days before you (n00b!) :)

I see. Well, you can always count on the UK forum for earthy topics! (I hope he's OK!)

In other news, are there any Doctor Who geeks in the house? It looks like the husband and I are going to Gallifrey in LA, Feb. 26-28. I'm just going for the people-watching, which is outstanding from what I understand. Also, my friend Steve, a Brit who lives in Tucson, needs help with "operations" for his homemade Dalek, which is really impressive (that's Steve on the right). These pics are from last year:

When the husband and I went to England a couple of years ago, he smuggled back some English bacon--in my suitcase (without my knowledge, of course). It was frozen and wrapped in several layers of tin foil. He called me his "bacon mule." Hmm...

United KingdomAny of y'all homesick?

Went to Meijer the other day (midwestians will know...) and went to the "foreign" food aisle.

Everything in the British section was SO overpriced. I mean I understand that a: it has to be imported (mostly) and b: it has a "cool" factor of being foreign which immediately adds about 50% to the price, but $8 for a SMALL 125g jar or Marmite? Sod off!

I told my dad this and bless him he went out and bought some marmite, digestives and hobnobs to send in a care package! D'oh.

I think there's a Marmite cartel in the U.S. I've never seen it anywhere here for less than $6 for a small jar.

United KingdomCan a US born British Citizen attend Uni in UK as a Brit?
This link has lots of good information on the subject: http://www.ukcisa.or...p#home_overseas

Unfortunately, it looks like tuition is going up, and in some cases way up, in England: http://www.bbc.co.uk...cation-11483638

At this rate, in-state tuition in the U.S. (depending on the state, of course) might be better value!

United KingdomRidiculous objectification of our SOs thread

I'll never forget the first time I saw him across the fashionable theme rock club. Cotton Eye Joe had just started to play, so of course, I was looking around for the New York Yankees who are usually drawn inexorably to the sound. They never materialized. Instead, emerging through the ersatz fog and the groups of students dressed as a golf outing and super heroes, was 5 foot 6 inches of pure man (I could tell by the distribution of hair) in tweed and a flat cap. "Is that a ferret in your trousers, or are you just happy to see me?" I asked coyly (It turned out to be a ferret). After exchanging pleasantries and speaking flirtatiously of going out some evening for some kidney pie and mushy peas, he announced "Git thi coit. Tha's pulled." Naturally I thought I was being mugged, so I attempted to glass him, as I was taught was their custom. It seems I had not quite grasped the technique, so he just exclaimed "Eee bah gum, luv." and called me a "big girl's blouse". My head was spinning from a combination of the IRN BRU and pale-flesh-induced snow blindness. Confused and disoriented, I took *off* my blouse. It was love....
