CanadaTraveling to Canada :)

Getting a new passport with name change takes about 20 days when sending it from the USA.

Thats not too bad, I think I will do that to avoid the need of extra documentation and traveling under my maiden name

CanadaTraveling to Canada :)

Congratulations on your green card  .

Buy your tickets in the name that is in your passport. To fly internationally you need to have the tickets and the passport names agree. Carry a copy of your marriage certificate with you showing you married and your husband's last name is now the name that is on your green card. You shouldn't need this to enter Canada but on your return fight when you go through US customs and immigration you will need to show your green card with your passport and the marriage certificate will connect the two names. You shouldn't have any problems if you do things this way. Enjoy your visit home!

Thank you for that, it doesn't matter that i'm divorced now right? just to connect the 2 is what the certificate is for? I was thinking that it might be easier if i just had both in the same name, but not sure how long it takes to renew a passport from here and my trip will be the end of july

So now that my green card has arrived I am excited to finally make a trip home to see my family. My question is, my passport is still in my maiden name, i believe it expires in a year or 2. Would it be best for me to renew now and get it in the same name that my green card has on it, or do I travel with it in my maiden name, do i have to buy tickets in the name on the passport, and then what kind of problems will i run into coming back through to the US if my green card is in one name and passport in another?

CanadaSome random questions about Vancouver interview for K-1

Hey all,

Right now I've got my medical scheduled and just waiting on my fiance to do his evidence of support paperwork before I fax off Packet 3. So the interview for me is coming up soonish.

My random questions:

1. on http://www.visajourn...ndex.php/Canada it says to bring an Expressport mailer - what is that about? I mostly hear peeps going on about DHL shipping.

2. Is there a fee I need to bring payment for to the interview (similar to the medical)? I tried looking through the consulate site but got confused.

3. Not being able to bring electronics - I'm one of those spazzy people that need something to do. So no cellphones, ipods, ebook readers, correct? Do I even need to bring something like a book or knitting? what kind of waiting times is there for the interview?

4. I can keep my electronics at my worksite, which is not far from the consulate - but I have one of those key fob things you scan to enter an electronic door for work - are those okay to take on me to the interview?

the Expressport Mailer is you go to the post office and you purchase an envelope with the shipping paid on it, they use that to mail you everything when your approved so you take that with your address and everything filled out on it already. really up to you if you wanna use DHL instead, does canada have DHL?

I don't remember there being a fee at the interview , and your packet that you get telling you what to bring to the interview will tell you for sure.

You cannot take any electronics with you, the wait was not very long because I showed up before they opened, there were about 10 of us waiting when they unlocked the doors, a key to a door is not considered an electronic, they mean cell phones and computers and things of that nature, if you choose to take a book thats fine but you shouldn't be waiting long if you plan it right

CanadaLife decisions

I'd stay put in Arizona, a simpler solution to missing your family is to make it a priority to fly home at least once a year. Figure out what the cost would be; divide by 12 and put that amount in a special account each month, so when you need to buy the ticket you empty out the account, go home and when you get back start over again.

I lived far away from my family all my life and have found that when I started these yearly visits it knocked down the homesickness by 90%.

It seems like you love your life and it's only missing your family that troubles you.

Have you ever really looked forward to seeing your family and then when you are there visiting them, sitting in their midst you say to yourself; "nothing has changed, it's still the same as always, why was I missing this?" Haha, it's happened to me several times and now after many years of experience I am much easier going then I used to be about missing them. I love them but I can handle the distances much better.

Arizona sounds much to nice to give up on. :-)

(PS Can you tell I don't like winter much? haha)

haha ya this was my thoughts too, I do like it here, there just isn't much holding me here other than liking the weather lol I am still thinking that I will move back but I don't plan on moving to the same city as my family because I am the same as you I don't want them around all the time, but I would like to be close enough to visit more often lol I figure if I wait and get my citizenship and decide I don't want to be in Canada anymore I can always move back down here, I'm young so I don't feel that moving a few times is really that big of a deal at this point to find out for sure where I want to be.

One thing to remember as a US citizen you will be required to file US taxes every year, even if you never live in the USA again.

yes thats true, thank you, I will remember that if I end up moving back. I think you all are right, I only have a year left before I can apply for citizenship so it is probably best to just wait that out and then I can go whereever I want :)

Once you're a citizen, you're no longer bound by the residency constraint. you can move freely between both countries.

It boils down to where is the best place for you.

This is what I thought, my only problem is then that I believe I have to wait until november of next year before I can apply, i have only been a resident since 11/10/09 my permanent resident card says.

CanadaLife decisions

Well this really doesn't have a specific topic, I guess I'm just looking for opinions, it has been a long time since I was on here looking for help with my immigration. I moved to Arizona in feb 2009 to marry my then fiance, we were married that same month. We divorced a year later due to his infidelity and abuse. I was able to adjust my status and received my 10 year greencard last year.

At this point I am just trying to decide whether to stay here in Arizona or move back to Ontario, I have no family here and nothing really keeping me other than I have a job and some assets but nothing that cant be sold, and of  course the beautiful weather :)

I am not a huge fan of change, I am comfortable here and have my own life going but I do miss my family and it isn't easy to get back to see them often, I have only been to visit once in 4 years. My main issue is that I'm terrified to move back home and then realize that I made the wrong decision and want to be here in Arizona.

It is my understanding that if I move back to Canada for 6 months to a year that I will lose my greencard and would not be able to move back to Arizona.

I guess one thing I am curious about is what happens if I take the Naturalization test and get my US citizenship, am I then free to move between the 2 countries as I wish? is there any way to lose my US citizenship once i get it?

CanadaCanadian Passport Renewal from US

Thats what i'm trying to do cherylc522.  Not sure if it will work, consulate lady t old me i HAVE to pay the more expensive price..

Seems like it should work really because they aren't paying for the extra shipping or any other extras, the processing is the same and it would be shipped within canada if using the mailing address on the form. How would they know other than by your current home address that your in the US. Just my thoughts lol I'm thinking of just calling and not really laying out the scenario fully just say hey is it ok to put a US current home address on the application but a Canadian shipping address, maybe even just tell them your visiting home for the next couple months and would prefer if it is shipped back to where your staying. The fees listed do not say that they are for where your living they say that its for where you are filing from.

CanadaCanadian Passport Renewal from US

Hey, I need to do a new passport application since my passport expires next month and I have changed my name. I noticed that the price for applying from outside of canada is $260 but if you apply within Canada it is $160.  Has anyone tried mailing all the documents and photos to family in Canada, have them sign as the guarantor and then send the application in from there. The application has a spot for current home address and mailing address if different from home, could I put my parents Canadian address as my mailing address and then the passport would be mailed to them in canada and they could ship it to me. Just thinking this would save me $100 if its possible.

did you, guys have any joint utility bills or health/medical/dental/life/rental/home owners insurance? These may help as well.

we had health insurance through my work, i believe i sent copies of the cards and insurance papers but i will double check that. all the utilities and stuff was in his name, i don't remember renters insurance on that place, i believe i have sent them everything i had that was in both names. i read that the important things were financial documents in both names, which i already provided, I'm hoping that the tax transcripts and my statement are all they need to push this through.

Thanks for all the help, I have written my detailed statement of the events leading up to the termination of the marriage. I am waiting for the tax transcripts to arrive and will send the package back in. can anyone think of anything else that might help? i have already sent all the financial information as far as our joint account and our joint car loan and the lease for our apartment

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussionreceived RFE

We received an RFE yesterday also - asking for the exact same things. In my initial package I enclosed:

1. Affidavit from my mother and landlord.
2. Copy of our joint tax returns for 2009 and 2010.
3. Copy of the beneficiary designation of my life insurance to my husband.
4. Copies of our joint car insurance.
5. Copy of our joint checking account.
6. Copy of our joint electric bill.
7. Copy of our reservations for a vacation we took together.
8. Copy of our business licenses (we each run a business).
9. Various photos of us together and us with my children.

THEY WANT MORE?????????????????????

The first thing on the list of acceptable proof is a birth certificate of a child we have together - we don't have a child and we have been trying for 2 years to get pregnant! I had an 8 week miscarriage and at least one if not two or three 4 week chemical pregnancies. I'm on fertility drugs. I just don't know what else to do!

I'm sorry for what your going through too. I wonder if you can use the fact that your trying to get pregnant together? maybe doctors affidavits? i don't know what else they want, I'm running out of things to send them.

You should be able to order a transcript online here
http://www.irs.gov/i...=232168,00.html

It should take about a week to get to you. This is how we ordered ours for ROC.

thanks, i tried that it keeps saying address is wrong, i will have to call but that is very helpful

do you know if affidavits from family back in canada will have any merit when it comes to this? I have a couple friends but they didn't know both of us just me. but other than financial information what are they looking for? I will write a detailed account of what lead to the ending of the marriage, but i almost feel like their just going to read that and assume its just one persons view.

I think you should be very detailed in your affidavit regarding the termination of the marriage.

You guys filed taxes jointly?

seems like you need more substantial evidence and good "primary evidence" review the guides, read some of the posts. Was the marriage controlling for religious reasons? That seems to bother me, and maybe USCIS picked up on that.

wasn't anything religious, started off "ok" and then just got worse over time, were only married 1 yr before i left, i was isolated a bit, i could go to work but couldn't talk to anyone or go anywhere without him. also he started drinking heavily and got a bit abusive, i got out before it got bad but never reported any incidents. do you know if there is a way to get a copy of a joint tax transcripts?

Removing Conditions on Residency General Discussionreceived RFE
Received my letter yesterday for RFE, lists all the things they want sent in, proof of joint financial information (bills, lease, bank accounts etc.) only problem is that i already sent all that information with the original application. I have a few more things that i can send, just more bank statements with a good range of time from early in our marriage to even after the divorce went through. I don't know what else to send other than all our financial information I have already sent. they asked for pictures and affidavits and any other information that i might think is relevant. The marriage was a very controlling and so I was not really allowed to have any friends and was not allowed to talk to my family much, so as far as affidavits from people that knew both of us for 2 years during the marriage there really isn't anyone, he had a couple friends, i must say his ex wife was his best friend, but they will not help me at all with an affidavit, does it count if my parents write one?

what else can i send, they also want an affidavit from me about the termination of the marriage

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionRFE asking us to send original resident card

So I got stuff in the mail the other day and it is basically an RFE for my wife that has handwritten instructions to mail her green card to them. Has anyone had this happen? I don't think there is anything wrong with the application because they cashed the check and they also sent the extension notice for my stepdaughter, who was included on the application to remove conditions. However, they didn't send the extension notice for my wife. I included copies of both of their green cards with the application so I don't understand why my stepdaughter gets the extension letter and my wife is told she needs to send her card to them.

If anyone has had this happen, will they send the card back? I thought it is the extension letter along with the card that shows proof of legal residence while waiting for the new card.

I hope this is just a matter of them not being able to see something on the copy of the card that I sent to them. However, I made my wife's copy and stepdaughter's copy with the same copy machine.

Thanks

Is it possible that maybe the copy of your wife's green card was not legible but your daughters was fine? could be they just want the original to see it if the copy wasn't good. you could always call them and ask, sometimes they don't give much info though

Congratulations!!! May I ask a question here? How do you know a file is touched? Is it when the date the file was updated changes? Our case still says last updated 09/15. What about you guys who got your NOA2 so quick? How many times has your file been touched till u got NOA2? Thanksss

Yes, a touch is when the date on your file on USCIS website is updated. It just means USCIS have scanned your file and someone is working on it. Check my signature for when our file was touched and the outcomes. Our case was touched twice in a row before we received an RFE. We replied to the RFE and then touched a further three times before we received NOA2. Some cases might never show a touch but still get NOA2!!

Hang in there YubaQ - focus on the day you and your fiance are together again. It's hard I know but your love for each other will get you through this.

A touch is when the date changes on the USCIS website for your case. Just put your WAC# in and your case status will pop up and you see the date the case was reviewed.

Hey all,
I saw a thread for K3 filers in January and maybe there is one for K1, I'm not sure but I wanted to start a post to get some responses from more experienced VJ's. I have received my NOA #2 from the NVC in NH and am awaiting CDJ to get the case number into the system there in Juarez. They have had the packet nearly a month and it is still not in the system. I have called the 900 line and found a variety of different answers to the question how long should I wait to call to check in the see if the packet is moving. Does anyone know what determines the wait time once the packet has entered the consulate? I see the average is 54 days. If anyone can shed some light on anything regarding the CDJ I wopuld appreciate it. I have read the thread and posts regarding what happens once you have your appointment letter but what determines the great differences in wait times?
