Asia: East and PacificInterviewing at HCMC: it's all about faith
Faith? Didn't you hear they remove all faith related material out of the court/school/government buildings? Then what happened after that? They start installing barbed wires and metal detectors after that! You shouldn't expect that to happen here at HCMC either!

All jokes aside! Come on guys, you didn't have faith in love and romance, you wouldn't go this route to get married a girl in the land that 12000 miles away. Just keep the faith, US has a big government machine, takes a bit longer to turn the wheels than your private board meeting! Ask anyone who went through this process, once your wife here, you wouldn't even care to stress out how long it took you to get her here. It's just tough right now you are going through the system and not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

However, I must say, this is the BEST system money can buy brothers! Everyone wants to come here, you're not competing only with the folks in VN, you competing for processing Visa resource with the whole world who try to get in!

Hang tight! good.gif

Asia: East and Pacificpreparation for the incoming interview on Aug. 19
To Ralph: in the foreseeable future, 90 days after her arrival, will you be making enough money to support her? Will you have a steady income to support yourself and her? If you say yes, then it's fine! The financial support piece of this process is to make sure SHE won't get on welfare once she gets here, if she does, you will be liable!

Huanyen: It happens! Say, if you always knew her way back when..., just waited to be old enough to get married... then on your first chance coming back to the motherland, you marry your dream girl! It happens!
On the other hand, you never knew her before, it's an arranged marriage, you return to VN to marry a girl as a favor to her family (of course, we won't tell the C.O. that). Then the C.O. would raise the redflag and review the case further! It happens!
Or, a friend of an uncle introduce her to you, you want to marry her, love at first sight. It happens!
Any of these scenarios would usually raise redflags! Expect a tough fight @ HCMC. IMHO!

QUOTE (RalphandHanh @ Aug 4 2008, 08:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'm very interested in knowing what happens. I also have had two or three (have to check 2005) bad years financially but, so for this year is rocking. But I'm partners in commercial real estate that is worth a Lot... and have been partners in this for years. I was hoping that one of the pieces was going to sell before I have to disclose my finances but by the time we have our interview it will and I will have a significant amount of money in the bank. This is really the only part of the process that its really concerning me. As soon as we get our package, I'm going to consult Mark Ellis to make sure of what I have to do. I know my employer that I'm with now will be happy so write a letter if needed and I plane to go back in Oct to visit again (2nd time) and hope I can be there for the interview in Nov as well. Please let us know what happens.

Hi RalphandHanh,

I can only assume you are a commercial real estate agent/investor! That's your profession, that's your business and that's what you do for a living! Good and bad years in running and owning a business is nothing new or strange to us. C.O. knows that! Just make sure you meet the poverty guideline, somewhere in the $17.5K/yr.

Your annual incomes will be considered but it's not the only reason where it will make it or break case. Here is an example I always give to people on VJ, if you were a Medical student, who made next to nothing in your years of studying to become a doctor while trying to petition for your fiancé to come to the US, knowing that you will graduate and become a MD next year. VS. McDonald's Burger Manager at your local restaurant, who makes a bit above the poverty guideline, steady incomes for the past 5 years!

Who do you think would get a better chance when it comes to financial support evidence for their petition? The answer is NEITHER, their chances are equally good! Key here is: you must meet the minimum amount of the poverty guideline. You do, don't you?

Good luck and sell that real estate smile.gif

Can you give me a good reason why would people remove the timeline from their file?
You should already submit your application and prepare all document and evidence in support your petition in a chronological order, WITH the timeline and "List of Items" included. Read: this helps the Vietnamese staff and C.O. to quickly advance and review through your file.
You know why they keep asking people to submit a timeline these days? Think, if you were a Vietnamese staffer and C.O., this timeline would be very helpful.

QUOTE (Huanyen @ Aug 3 2008, 10:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Another note about our relationship timeline: It is a typed notarized document. Do I need a handwritten version?

There seems to be some debate about this. I submitted a typed, non-notarized timeline, and we were successful on the first try. I was told that I didn't need to get the document notarized because I was there (waiting across the street from the consulate). If you are not able to be there for the interview, it has to be notarzied (which yours is).

Some have said it needs to be hand-written, which I really can't see the sense of. That just makes it harder for the person to read and understand. We did submit some other hand written documents, and now that I look back on it, that seems silly, too. It just gave me a chance to use my fountain pen.

Nothing to debate about this! It's very irrelevant if you think about it, what does public notary mean? "Yes, I am a PN Clerk, who see you SIGN the (fill in the blank) document in front of me is the person whom you say you are (check ID's)" Done, nothing more nothing less!

Only notarize what required! (financial support document etc.)

To Huanyen,

I would cut back the emails to "The Top 20's" best emails - Make sure they best represent your relationship timeline. Here is why: C.O. won't have time to read your 500 random emails. Only the important onces (Hint: Wedding plan, Children plan, Life in America plan and discussion. You do talk about these kind of things in your emails and daily conversation, don't you?)

Blue/Green: Usually, more often than not these days, prepared before the interview, however, there are cases where the fiance was able to change the C.O.'s mind for a PINK on the 10 short mins of the interview!

Pink: Prepared before hand for cases, IMHO, similar to your case. Read: less complication! (no same-last-name, no relatives-introduction, no complex family-tights, no divorces) Pink also gets issued on the spot!

Think "BIG PICTUTRE" Huanyen smile.gif Your financial situation isn't the ONLY thing that makes or breaks the case. I lost my job right after I applied for Kim's Visa, that whole year leading to the interview, I was collecting unemployment (it was sweet!!!!!!!). total income was nowhere near what I'm making now but still above porverty line. However, C.O. will look at your total financial support ability to gage whether or not you can and will be able to support your honey when she is here. $60K/year is a lot in someplace with low rent and cheap cost of living, (Think - New York, Los Angeles vs. here in Philly) But it's all relative. You will be just fine, you have a solid job, with steady income, then previous year's lack of income will be overlooked.... NOBODY can guarantee they will have the job tomorrow! C.O. knows that!

Everything else seems OK!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

What's the problem with him coming back to have an engagement ceremony, think of it as an picture ops!

Frankly, I don't see how you could get by a 10 months relationship in Vietnam without going to a party where friends and relatives would show off their new Digital camera and taking 1000's of photos of everyone and including you in it.... Maybe you personally don't have your own photos/pictures of yourself together... ask around, maybe friends and relatives have some pictures of you two.

People tent to be uncomfortable with what they do not understand, certainly with unfamiliarity. You will attract points and stares, be prepared for you are the source that cause the attention, wanted or not, you'll get it! Don't feel angry, don't feel mad, for in the end, you are one who have to live with these engagement pictures for the rest of your marriage good.gif devil.gif
My advise, the custome sounds awesome in one's head, but in reality and in the long run, not everyone will share the same interest as you. Think of Tan's family and the future Linda. It would be a great honor and Tan's family (relatives and what not) will appreciate you forever when you have a "normal" traditional engagement ceremony, in normal traditional "Ao Dai". For the sake of Tradition, let's think about this! I'd save all the wild and crazy dress-up ideas for the States side wedding smile.gif

Either way, my senses always got my wildness...

Moving to VN, have your own business there and have your jungle boy with you. What is waiting for him here in the States when you two are back here? Make sure you have him clear on this.... Linda and Tan,

Great story! We want updates and are here to share every moment of your long journey to come. I'm glad you find true love that meaningful to you and more. I actually am not much interested in the fact of a white woman marries an asian man. Some of my friends work in Healthcare, they have such "low expectation" in life biggrin.gif and it's constaintious... with them: "still breathing? it's a good day already".... So here is my take on your story: a Female is crazy in love with a male, great!!!! good.gif And they are on VJ? That's even better! Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the sex stuff, we are all adults here, if it wasn't for part of the sex stuff, we wouldn't get married and have children. It's our desire to enjoy sex, make love to our wife/husband, it's burning inside everyone of us here. Prove me wrong!!! smile.gif Admittedly, I LOVE SEX!!!!!!!!!!! So don't feel like you are offending anyone.

This is why I highly recommend everyone to file your case, move the paperwork, submit, prepare everything in secretive while in Vietnam and US. When I say secretive, it means the vietnamese speaking people around your S.O. should NOT EVER be allowed to be informed, awared and in the know of ANYTHING related to your case. If they speak Vietnaemse and living in VN, nor US, you don't talk to them about your case. You want answers, get on VJ, you want suppport, get on VJ.

Traditionally, Tatoos isn't the issue. But who knows, if they start questioning people's tatoos (or you like to call body arts), then be ready to have a good answer or casually work it in the coversation "Right after she proposed to me, I love her so much, I went and got a tatoo of her name on the back of my neck" Here is the big picture: How to show and convince the C.O. that your relationship is real. Tatoo or not, doesn't prove to make or break your case. It's the complete package putting together and that makes sense to the C.O.!

Good luck, be focus but never turn "Tunnel Vision" on your Visa Journey! Think "BIG PICTURE"

If getting married become "Economic Setup" or "Bailout" for her family, then you're in a bigger problem for the get go!
Kim and I are both professionally working folks from the get go, so maybe I can't relate to your situation. We do send gifts, but so do they. We buy gifts for my parents here in the States at Christmas, do the same for her parents, send birthday cards and gifts accordingly. However, bottom line is if you are married, your financial wealth management must become a task and responsibility of both you. She knows how much you bring home each month, what get paid and what get saved to build your life, your family here in the US, not VN.

Would her family back home expect anything from her if she didn't marry you but marry a farmer in the neighboring village? Gift must be something that comes from the heart, from your wants and needs, not obligation. If you feel she "back you in" the corner to send $800-$1000 each time instead of the predetermined amount $500. You need to communicate, guilt trip doesn't work in this economy!

She holds your cash? No, she holds OUR cash! For a couple of reason, I like to keep our cash safe with her father who also does the currency exchange for us. smile.gif Being a business man himself, he can give us the top rate on the currency exchange whenever we need VND. Most of the times, we don't like to carry tons of cash with us anyway. So, the answer, just for safety reason, yes, she holds our cash. If you plan to go dancing/massage without her then you some explaining to do smile.gif But that goes the same way either in VN or US or anywhere else. smile.gif

Also, in Saigon, you can always use your trusted Visa card and ATM Bank card almost everywhere....

To philiptham and niceman,

HCMC is in fact working on your cases! They will further investigate all the claims and facts you make in your petitions. Prepare your fiancé for random calls from HCMC or someone sounds like it. Prepare for local visits. Prepare for targeted phone calls to anyone you have listed on your petition asking about your relationship. Random questioning "So how's your husband (using the EX's name)". Locally visits are weird but they do do those now. Talking to your neighbors and possible local police department (Công An Ph??ng, Xã, Huy?n etc.)

2-3 months is a long time, but you two have nothing to hide! The wait sux big time dou!

Asia: East and PacificHCMC interview
The Q&A session was fantastic! simple answer, yes/no, not too much, nor too little detail. Just the right amount! Craig did a good job on coaching his fiance and she herself just being confident and her own self is the key factor.

If you notice, the CO didn't focus on just ONE piece of evidence to give the "PASS" decision but instead, he drilled through the variety of issues. From Location, Timeline, Current employment status, relationship status, interaction and communication ability, family history and background to the price of the engagement ring. I never thought NOT having the engagement is a the problem, BUT I always believe not having a solid on-going relationship IS the problem for most C.O.

Conducting the interview in English is a major advantage for her!

Last but not least, Craig and Cam did "think and question" themselves as a C.O. in their preparation for the interview. That's the key to "counter-drilling" by being pro-active with the questions. Good lesson for many who are going through the same thing... Think like a C.O.!

Great job and congrats!

Don't worry about the nice young man with a machine gun, last time I checked, the security detail only allow them to load a few (5-7) bullets in each clip, just for show and self-protection... In case, someone actually grabs his gun, they can only shoot 5-7 people at the time.

Oh, make sure you get her to HCMC early, in a TAXI, no motobike, traffic accident is on the rise in Saigon.

Plus, her documents/files/evidence, watch out for those guys standing outside the Consulate, they can grab them and run away... later on, contact you for a ransom. File-napper!

The list goes on and on, I can unload my list of worries to your harddrive if you want smile.gif

Here my only advise to you brother: Think Big Picture! What would you do if you were HCMC Officer, to interview this girl and find out for sure she's the real deal? Your ultimate goal is get her here (US), the rest is just part of the journey. Even the blue/white slips, delay/denial letters. Always remember: do it all you can to get the Visa.

Asia: East and PacificInterview in HCMC?
about 5 years ago... as I recall...
enter through security checkpoint, you will pass an iron fence/gate to enter the USC service center, if you walk straight up into the main lobby. To enter the Immigration/Visa Section, you need to hang a right after passing the iron fence but before entering the USC lobby. At the end of the hallway, you hang a left, there you will see a roll of interview rooms/booths as long as the length of the hall. Wooden benches for sitting, one watercooler for drinking while waiting for your turn to be interviewed in the booth. Not sure what the security is like now, but I was able to just walk through the hall and enter this area without troubles.
But that was 5 years ago... someone can share with a more updated version of the floor layout.
