I also sent the DMV a letter and cut up my license too. I notified the govt and they cancelled my GST rebate cheques.... Of course not my SIN number, that is with you for life! I had a list that I got off VJ and I'm sure there are other places I notified but cannot recall right now....

Did you really cut up your license? Why? I'm guessing you cut it up after you got your PA license?

NYS kept my old license, but I still had an expired Ontario one previous to the one they kept, so I'm glad I still have it because it's in my married name and it's the only thing with a photo (other than my passport) that shows my maiden name and all my Canadian banking is still in my maiden name, so if I use my Canadian visa and someone asks for photo id, then at least I have my old license.

What is the value in telling OHIP that we've left? Just wondering. I'm pretty sure I didn't and I just want to make sure I'm not going to get in trouble, LOL.

Yes, I got my PA license soon after moving and only cut up my ON license then. Well I had no need for it anymore and didn't want a souvenier, LOL but I read a story that Bermycat posted once it scared me LOL. She said that she was in secondary once and a guy was in there with his Canadian license but he had a green card.... and having the Canadian license was proof he was still a Canadian resident or something and was trying to have 2 residencies so they took away his green card or something like that.... maybe she can clarify the details of the story. I just didn't need it anymore!

As for OHIP, I just read it on one of the lists of people to notify. It's on their website that if you move out of Ontario, it's your obligation to notify them so I sent a letter as recommended.

Yes you need to send a request to this e-mail address, it comes from the US even for Canadian vehicles:

intl.imports.exports@mazdausa.com

I e-mailed them and stated I required a compliance letter. They replied very quickly, same day in fact and the letter is FREE. All I needed to do was fill out a simple 1 page thing (VIN number, etc) just some basic questions. I scanned it back to the person, and they e-mailed me my compliance letter the very next day. Soooo easy.

To import the car, all I showed at the border was my letter, I also had with my proof of purchase, etc. but they never asked to see it.

CanadaCanadian child in USA - Citizenship

Hi All,

I hope everyone is doing well, I haven't been around in so long  :)

So my son was born here in the US almost a year ago. Since I am Canadian, he is also Canadian. I am trying to get his Canadian Citizenship certificate, so if we should move back to Canada in the future or he decides to on his own when he's older, he has the paperwork in order to do so. I found the form online, but that form is for children currently living in Canada as permanent residents. I can't find anything for children that live outside Canada, how to get their Citizenship paperwork. I need that first, so I can go ahead and apply for his passport. He IS Canadian, but I want the paperwork that says so.

Has anyone on this forum that lives in the US and has American born children applied for Canadian Citizenship for their children?

Thanks for any advice!! :)

Hi...

I'm a US Citizen. Last year since my husband lived with me in the US, I filed jointly, got him a Taxpayer ID number, the whole shebang... part of getting him that number means of course all of his income has to get reported, something I'm not willing to skimp on since we want to live in the US again some time....

We've moved to Canada, so stupid me waiting until the last minute... I'm sitting here surrounded by all of his T4s staring at a form 1116 crying 'cuz I'm so frustrated. I thought with all the relationship between our two countries, someone would have easy instructions posted somewhere... Add line 16, 18, and 22 from your T4, put it into line 2 on your 1116.... >.< I can't find anything like that though, so I'll just ask this.

My husband has CPP deductions, EI deductions, and of course Income Tax deductions listed on his T4s. Which of these do I put in to the 1116 as "expenses definitely related to the foreign income?" crying.gif Can I use it all? Is any of it not "expenses definitely related to the foreign income?" I can't find this information online and we can't afford a tax service, meanwhile here I am stuck on line 2.

We're just a young couple with no property tax, no interest income, nothing but about $18k USD worth of income, 100% of it earned in Canada. No kids. Our situation is about as basic as it gets. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Edit: Augh, now I see line 2 isn't related to deductions at all. I'm so lost. My question still stands, I just need to keep digging to find out where to put it.

Sorry, I don't know the answer but have you tried turbotax.... they have a free edition, I used that and it was really easy.... it fills out everything for you and knows where to put it, you just input the numbers....

OK so my US taxes are done.... my Canadian taxes were always done by my Dad's accountant. So this year I sent him my T4/T4E and advised that I needed to file as a non-resident of Canada.... then today he called me and said why do you want to file as a non-resident, as long as you still have a bank account or something you don't have to.... I know he's wrong and I wish I never sent him all my stuff, I should have gone to a professional in Canada when I go home next week.... Although I don't yet have my green card so can I just file as normal this time and next year when GC received file as a non-resident? I told him I already advised the Canadian Govt I moved, I don't want to do anything wrong....

Hi Zyggy,

US Tax Question

My husband (USC) and I (nonresident alien) are using TurboTax but won't file electronically, because I know we have to submit a letter stating that I choose to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes. So my question is, do I also have to fill out form 2555 along with the 1040 and my letter? Also how do I convert my $$ earned in Canada in 2008, is there a specific website to use for conversion purposes? Also I cashed in my company pension but got taxed in Canada on this already when I left my job, must I include this amount under "foreign earned"? Or can I just enter the amount from my T4 and T4E (Canadian EI).

Thanks very much,

Jill

Based on your very limited info, I submit the following:

1) Yes - Use Form 2555, the letter and the 1040
2) The answer has been address in this thread already. Please read further for the answer
3) All foreign income to be excluded must be reported on the 2555. As long as this was done before you left Canada, it would be included on the 2555.

Are you still in Canada, or have you immigrated to the US yet? Very important.

Hi Zyggy,

Thanks, I found the conversion info. I immigrated to the US on Nov. 15, 2008.

Can anyone who has already been to the interview clarify something for me:

How does the line actually form outside the consulate building?

From my understanding the entrance is on the south side off Rue-St.Alexandre (not Blvd Renee Levesque) and there should be some clear signage indicating the consulate. But is there a clear place to start a line? I assume that I'll be among the first people there between 6:30-6:45, so I won't have the benefit of joining a line unless someone even more hardcore is waiting there first.

One more week to go!

Yeah I was the first there at 7am, and just stood outside the door. It's actually not that clear that it's the consulate, I figured there'd be some big flags or something but you can't tell until you get really close. When my Dad dropped me off I was like are you SURE this is the right place?

QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Mar 10 2009, 11:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
According to multiple posts i've read regarding this issue, my understanding is that your case is automatically extended by USCIS. As long as it is still active (ie. waiting for your interview) it won't expire on you. No need to worry about that!

You can call the Department of State to get information regarding your file. My finance called and was told when the case was received by the NVC, left the NVC and and when the consulate recorded receiving the file. You can also call or e-mail the consulate and ask if they have received your application and if they have sent your packet out yet. I find e-mailing the easiest way to communicate, but others have had problems getting responses. Just make sure you put your case number in the subject line. Hope that helps!

That is true! Mine expired a few weeks before my interview, and they had automatically extended it 4 more months.

I think it depends on your interviewer. Some people have been able to, most not. Don't count on it, it doesn't seem that it happens often.

The Calgary Herald

CALGARY - It is barely October, but Calgary is expected to see its first snow this fall over the weekend, forecasts say.

Environment Canada says the current stretch of sunny but cool weather will give way to rain this afternoon - and then changing to wet snow overnight.

The wet snow and showers will continue Saturday and likely Sunday, the forecast says. Lows will reach 0 C tonight and will only hit a high of 4 C on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures have been slowly creeping downward in Calgary since the heat wave in late September pushed the mercury to above 30 C. Last night, lows reached -4 C, and highs only reached 13 C.
