I'm pretty certain that you're right Jill, only Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto do medical exams now. Cindy- If you're going with a K1 or K3 visa then you would be wise to get the medical done at the same time as your interview when you're there. I mean, either way that's what you'll have to do, unless you can afford to make two trips! The doctor's office was very accomodating when I was there in April 2008. They usually only do appointments on Wednesday mornings though, so hopefully, if you have your interview in Van, it will be on a Tuesday or Thursday!

Opps we are doing the CR-1, interview will be in Montreal, not Vancouver.

Maybe you can do your medical in MTL the same time frame as your interview? Then not have to go to VCR.

CanadaMedical
The medical is valid for 1 year.... And I think, but I may be wrong, the medical can only now be done in VCR, TOR, MTL. Not Calgary. It used to be done in many more cities and for some reason they got cut down.

CanadaCan I visit with a visa in my passport?
I think it's a crapshoot.... when I had my interview the gentleman made it clear that the K-1 was valid for ONE activation only. So I didn't want to take any chances, I just stuck it out and Glen visited me every month until I moved. I read somewhere on here too that someone went for their K-1 interview and told the officer they HAD to go to the US for a wedding before their activation and the interviewer suggested they come back to put the Visa in their passport because she could not enter twice. I personally wouldn't want to risk it but you could take the chance. I don't think a letter from the employer would help, because it's not an issue that you're not coming back, it's that you've been granted the K-1 and the rules are it's valid for a one time entry and it has to be activated upon your next entry, that's what I understood.

Thanks so much! I never thought I'd be 38 years old and so freakin' excited about being married for a second time, but life is funny. My middle name is Alaine. My parents are total dorks. My oldest brother's middle name is Lane and my other brother's middle name is Blaine. They didn't realize that they rhymed until someone pointed it out to them, so by the time I came along, they thought they should stick with the theme. lol I do really love the name Alaine, but the premise behind it is goofy. lol

I digress. Don't want to hijack the topic with middle name discussions. lol Anyway, the whole time I was reading your story I was just smiling like crazy and I'm so happy things worked out for you. Now if I can just get through the next year of paperwork and waiting, all will be good. smile.gif

Awww thanks!! Well the funny part is, when I left my job to move here, the boss that invited me to the party guaranteed me a job, the same job I had in Toronto! I wouldn't be working in the same dept or same shift as Glen, so same company but totally different areas (which is good, I don't want to be together 24/7)!! So as soon as I had my EAD, he said I was hired. But, that was about 4 months ago. Since then, the company instated a hiring freeze, and business has gone way down. They are struggling, so unfortunately I don't have a job waiting for me anymore. I came at a bad time, economy wise. I would have had a job if it was any other time. Oh well, I'm here with my love and that's what matters! Hopefully I'll find something when I get my EAD.

CanadaHow did everyone meet their american/canadian significant others?
Wow so many of you met your loves online, that's neat! Imagine the days before the internet?

Well I (worked) for a shipping company in Toronto. We have many offices all over the world, it's container shipping and we go everywhere. One office that we deal with the most is the Philly office. I made bookings in the customer service dept, and Glen in Philly is the logistics co-ordinator. Many times I had to call him and ask if we had equipment in Philly that I could book for my customers, and if there was space on a certain vessel. Well this goes back to 2005, we'd chat it up since we were around the same age, ask what he did that past weekend, make small talk. He was so sweet and friendly on the telly and sounded hot but what does a voice tell you, not much about looks haha. So his boss really appreciated all the hard work myself and my co-worker Mel did, and invited us to come to the 2006 company Christmas party in Philly, all expenses paid! I was pretty excited to go, meet everyone I talk to on the telly but especially Glen. I picked out a black strapless dress, I wanted to make a good impression. So off we go to Philly, and arrived Friday afternoon, in time for a tour of the office. In the office they all have tags on their desk, and I saw who was Glen so went right up and gave him a hug. He was on the telly though so we couldn't chat, but I said to myself, damn he's good looking!!

Got changed in the hotel, went to the party. I walk in and see Glen standing alone at the bar waiting for his beer, so I went right up to introduce myself properly this time. There was an instant connection and sparks, we both felt it. He was so easy to talk to, and the entire night we danced and chatted. I barely spoke to anyone else LOL. Well we said our goodbyes and nice to meet you, I had to fly home the next morning. I couldn't get him out of my head, but said to myself this is silly, he lives in Philly nothing can come of this. But Monday morning back at work, I e-mailed him to say how wonderful it was to meet him and I enjoyed his company, he said the same. NY eve was coming soon, so I asked for his cell # so I could text him happy new year. Well from that day forward, we texted non-stop and called eachother. I ended up coming back in February, and we ended up seeing eachother once a month until I moved here! It was fate how we met, because I was invited to the party to meet my future husband!!

DEFINITELY go early! Going midday, you're bound to be stuck in traffic at the border and then waiting in secondary. I think it's stressful enough and the last thing I wanted to do was wait around when I had a 9 hour drive ahead of me. I got there at 5am, no one else around! Eventually I will be crossing at the Peace Bridge as well. What exactly does the Customs building staff require? wacko.gif Thanks

I don't know about the customs building, to me secondary is the customs building and my K1 was activated in there also my car import done in there. You do fill out a few forms, and they fill out the rest... they stamp the forms too to make it official.... what you fill out is basic stuff like your address.

Agreed Tmix. I think they must do a personality profile for most of their recruits and really like to see authoritative, enforcement oriented people. Because it does seem like their first reaction is to search, seize and reject. Its certainly not to facilitate immigration.

The guy processing me, just up and left for an hour. He was working on my paperwork, joked that he hated doing visas and got off his shift. Not knowing the process, I assumed he was in the back processing my paperwork. After sitting for an hour and waiting, I finally asked someone and they didn't realize he had been working on our visa and just left it unfinished on the desk. wacko.gif

But after that, it was really fast and the person who imported my car and the other gentleman who processed my visa were extremely polite and efficient.

Geez, these stories are awful! How about "Welcome to America" and some kindness or something. I got lucky, the 2 guys doing my visa and car stuff were so kind and actually knew what they were doing. One of them was a bit gruff, but not mean or anything.

It is, but Canada has nothing to do with US Immigration medicals. Why would Canada pay for a medical that the US government is requesting, it has nothing to do with Canadian healthcare.

Hi There,

I asked the same question, and the lovely Kathryn answered, I cut and paste what she said:

"Just to clarify - if you are a K-1, then you write 'Yes" under alien authorized to work on the SSN form. The classification IS work authorized, however, work is only permitted if you ALSO have physical proof from USCIS such as the stamp or the EAD. It means you are allowed to apply for proof of work eligibility. If you write "No", your SSN will be denied as it is available for work authorized individuals only. Make sure you get it as soon as you can after you arrive - the longer you wait the more hassles you encounter and time runs out 2 weeks before your I-94 date."

I did what she said and it was all good!

my poe didn't give me the stamp though, is that going to be a problem? i just dont know what all i need to have i have my birth certificate my passport with I-94 and visa in it and my marriage lisence but is that enough? do i HAVE to have that stamp?

Ah, he somehow got told by the post office you had to send it overnight to get it registered. He probably got talked to by a moron. I've had that happen to me before, at just about any office in any way run by the government.

As for his cheques? Well, his bank doesn't label the lines. There's no little spot saying "memo" and there isn't one saying "signature." There's no "paid to the order of." It's all just lines. So he went to his flatmate for help. She told him where to put all the information. And she had him put his signature on the memo line and the memo on the signature line. No idea why, considering she writes cheques all the time. If I wasn't trying to give her benefit of the doubt, I'd think she did it on purpose so he'd have more money to keep paying towards their share of the bills. Apparently, they won't take a cheque that has those two lines reversed.

DUH!! SHe writes cheques all the time!!?? blink.gif That's true, the signature does have to be on the signature line or the bank won't accept.

CanadaLyrics that Get ya by...
This song always makes me feel melancholy:

Comin' Home-City&Colour

Well I've been down to Georgia,
I've seen the streets in the west,
I've driven down the 90,
Oh hell, I've seen America's best.
I've been through the Rockies,
Hell, I've seen Saskatoon,
I've driven down the Highway 1
Just hopin' that I'd see you soon.

Cuz I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

Well I've never been to Alaska,
But I can tell you this;
I've been to Lincoln, Nebraska
And hell you know it ain't worth ######.
I've been through Nova Scotia,
Sydney to Halifax,
But I'll never take any pictures
Cuz I'll know I'll just be right back.

Cuz I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

Well I've seen a palace in London,
I've seen a castle in Wales,
But I'd rather wake up beside you
And breathe that old familiar smell.
I never thought you could leave me,
I figured I was the one,
But I understand your sadness,
So I guess I should just hold my tongue.

But I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home (x6)

I know that we're taking chances,
You told me life was a risk,
I just have one last question;
Will it be my heart
Or will it be his?

Comin' home,
I'm comin' home (x6)
