CanadaWhat we do to keep our families close
Well I'm used to living away from my Dad, as I moved from Montreal to Oakville at age 15, so it was always visits every 2-3 months with him. But Mom, we are so close as can be. When I moved out from her home into my own apt, we still spoke daily and saw eachother for tea or dinner 1-2 times per week. When she found out I fell in love with an American, she couldn't be happier for me. She wanted me to find someone special to treasure me, and loves her son in law. She never once made me feel bad for leaving, she always said follow your heart. I have unlimited LD so we talk every single night for 1/2 hour or so, since I moved not one day passed without us talking. I send her cards too, just "I love you" cards or thinking of you. She sends me alot of postcards. She looks at my photos on FB. Tomorrow will be my first visit home and she is thrilled, she has visited me here once. I tell her everything, she's so awesome. We can literally talk about anything and it's like talking to my BFF.

My sister, we're not superclose because she lived in Montreal when I moved to Ontario, so we're also used to living apart. But, we talk about 5 days per week, FB, e-mail, we do keep in touch well. I think keeping in touch is the best remedy for homesickness, I haven't felt terribly homesick since I moved and I think it's because of the constant communcation and planning to see one another. It keeps me going!

This brings up the topic of street meat.

I was told by everyone how great NYC hot dog carts were. Now coming from Toronto, I guess my expectations were already high because when I finally did try an NYC hot dog I was very dissapointed.

The opens vendor up this door in his cart and dips his tongs into a basin of sitting water! There was hardly any of the good stuff to throw on it like pickles and onions etc etc. It was just a hot dog... a lame floppy weiner.

In Toronto the street meat is AMAZING! They grill it for you and they have tons of things there you can put on it. Best thing you can get when you're coming out of the bar all tipsy. tongue.gif

I heard Chicago is home to some good street meat too but I have yet to sample it.

I think NYC street meat is pure #######.

Amanda, Jill and I had this conversation already before but I figure I'll start it again here.

Oh yeah we did! I love how Toronto street meat vendors have veggie dog options. It's always good when you're stumbling out of the bar and craving greasy yummy food!

Probably more in Canada. I love hotdogs but my husband isn't a huge fan.

My fave hotdogs are steamies in Montreal- haven't had any of those in years though.

I love coleslaw on my hotdogs as well as ketchup, relish, mustard and onions.

STEAMIES!! At Lafleurs!! I only eat veggie dogs, but they taste just as good as regular I think. Dunno really as I haven't had a real hot dog since childhood. I love steamed veggie dogs with all the condiments galore!

This is a funny thread BTW!

No, tax returns do not need to be notarized. I believe the most recent tax year is sufficient but to be sure, you should double check the instructions. And there's no harm in bringing previous years to be safe. I brought 3 years worth.

Thanks for the feedback guys...

We don't have concrete wedding plans yet, as we are marrying on the beach at the Jersey Shore.... but I will have a copy of my marriage license that we will try and obtain if it stays valid for 90 days or so. Also, we will not have an exact address of where we will be living, as we are in the process of finding a bigger house.... but all current info I know thoroughly.

Do they ever ask questions about your fiances family? Mind you, I hve met them all and know the info, just curious.... Do they look for proof of a big engagement? we agreed to get 'engaged' last May, and got a temp ring... then after we filed for our Visa, he proposed with my real ring...

I guess the whole Consulate thing is intimidating.

The $131 needs to be in cash? I will have to pay a fee for each myself and my son?

Pop, they did ask me about my fiancee's family... he asked his parents name, how many siblings, and where they live.... I guess to make sure I really know them.... he also asked details about the engagement, the date, did he get down on one knee, etc.

Kathryn replied to you in your last post:

Even though you still have minimal ties to Ontario - your car - you are considered a non-resident of Canada effective the date you physically crossed the border to live in the US and a resident alien of the US on the same date, even though you don't have a green card yet. Residency for tax purposes is not necessarily the same as residency for immigration purposes.

The only thing I could find on the MTO website, was how to change your gender on the license if you had a sex-change operation but nothing about cancelling it!

I'm wondering the same thing. I think once you get a new driver's licence it just cancels out the Ontario one so I don't we actually need to cancel it.

In terms of OHIP cards, I have one of those old red ones with no expiry date, so I should probably figure out how to cancel it.

True, when I got my PA license they punched a hole thru my ON one, but ON doesn't know that so I thought I may have to let them know.... I guess when they mail me the renewal I'll just toss it. And that will esentially cancel it. Whoa you have a real old school OHIP card!!

btw, my grocery now carries Stoned Wheat Thin crackers. I find it quite funny that the box actually says "imported" on it.

I'm a chef from Toronto and I'm freaking out here!! I can't find 70% of the ingredients I was used to cooking with in Toronto. No Indian foods, or Asian foods to mention. Forget making butter chicken, or good Chinese dishes. And Floridians seem to think that Tilapia and Basa are premium fish... FYI, they sell for about $1.50 per pound in Toronto, and I wouldn't feed Tilapia to my dog. So I guess I'm thinking I'll probably have to fly up to New York and get some mail-order happening, since their food supply should be comparable to that of Toronto's (minus border hassles). Florida, so far, is all about over-priced seafood, and high fructose corn syrup with food colouring in different coloured packages. Vegetables are sold as museum pieces, and well, I'm done complaining. Atleast the beef is really good here!

There must be asian/indian grocery/specialty stores in Florida area?

Yeah, Wilton's cheese is absolutely wonderful! I remember a number of years ago their cheesemaker died and they closed for 3 years before they were able to get another cheesemaker. When they re-opened they had a special on this absolutely incredible 9 year old cheddar - some of the best cheese I have ever tasted! Of course, they had stock for 2 or 3 years then ran out. I think 6 years old is their oldest now. Compare that to the US where they brag on their old cheddar that it is 6 months old! Geeze - that barely qualifies as new cheese and no where near old or aged. Do you ever visit Wilton pottery when you go to the Cheese Factory? I love their stuff as well although it is pricey to afford.

Is this cheese factory in the Kingston area? I need to stop there next time on my way to Montreal. I LOVE CHEESE!! Tonight I had this garlic and dill cheese ball spread on crackers, to die for.

Every school my son has attended has had those contracts. He went to a catholic school in Canada and public schools down here. I would never want to get a child kicked out of school. If anything I'd like the school to work with the child and figure out the reasons behind the way they are acting. Sometimes kids just need someone to talk to. I mean if you can catch a bully early on and help them you can avoid a lot in the future.

In schools in Philadelphia a lot of the times the teacher turnover rate is 4 a year and more. My friend joined this program, I wish I could remember the name, where you just go teach inner city schools, you don't need a teachers certificate, they just need teachers that badly. Half of the time people end up leaving because it terrifies them. I don't feel sorry for the teachers, I feel sorry for the children. First of all they're lacking a good education due to the desperation of the schools and second they come from poverty and probably have a really crappy home life to act out the way they do.

That's so true! Glen's cousin, fresh out of teaching college, got her first job at a school in Philly. Not sure what grade. Anyway she was harrased by the students, so bad she quit after 2 weeks. I have heard many many horror stories about it.

I know that post isn't kosher but I am just being painfully honest.

Hmmm - imagine being my daughter, who is mixed (Blacka nd white).plenty kids of both races here, as well as plenty mixed kids too........my daughter has encountered very little, if any racism in her life and then she arrives here and it's HUGE deal. She doesn't fit in with the black kids perfectly because she doesn't have the same 'black history' as them, she doesn't fit in with the white kids (bunch of freaking snots as a whole - and yes, I'm white)............

There was racism back in Kitchener, but nothing like it is here.....even my daughter is like' what is everyone's problem...' She doesn't understand because she's from Canada and her black ancestors are straight from Africa and her dad didn't experience racism really because he lived in a country of all black people......it's new to her.

Please don't PM me or call me out in this thread about not understanding racism - trust me, I understand it and have experienced it thoroughly....I'm just saying it's more prevalent here and is affecting MY child directly, whereas it did not have as much of an impact in Canada

That must be so hard on your daughter. Being a teen is hard enough, without issues like a big move, meeting new friends mixed into it. I wish her the best rose.gif

I agree that socialization is very important. I think you could put your children into soccer or some other group activity to make sure that they got it.

It's a moot point anyways. I doubt I'll ever be able to not work.

My husband was a school teacher in the public school system in New Hampshire until he got totally fed up with the political nonsense that the teachers in his district had to deal with. Despite his experiences, he gets a little annoyed that I'm nervous about sending any children we might have to public school.

~ Catherine

Well an hour or two a week of socialization on a soccer team probably won't cut it. It would help, of course.

It's okay to be nervous about sending your kids to public school here. I had the same discussion with my husband the other night and I don't even have kids yet. I told him that I am scared to send my unborn children to school here. I don't understand anything about the system and I'm scared of the class divides. We live in a state where so many people are VERY rich and so many people are VERY poor. I don't want my kid growing up with materialistic kids and I don't want them to be scared to go to school either.

I feel the same way about school here.... my husband went to a private Catholic school, only because he said the public schools in Philly were too dangerous/ghetto for "regular" kids. But it costs like 5G per year! I want our kids going to a regular public school, the way it is in Canada where all children go to the same school, rich or poor..... I can't imagine paying to have our children in grade school!

Somehow I ALWAYS get asked the question: WHO are you going to visit when I say visiting to the agent.

I obviously want to be truthful so I guess I will have to just take my chances of possibly being dragged to the back room....lol

I hope it won't be an issue though. I plan on going with alot of stuff to back me up on the fact that I am returning just in case. Doesn't mean some #### won't ruin my vacation though. UGH.

You'll be fine, but tell the truth.... You don't want to get caught in a lie, and lying can lead to your denial.
