My last job before moving was with IBM, working on the Calgary Health Region account - basically handling/coordinating all their IT needs.

I've done lots of stuff though - I basically chose that job because I could work from home. good.gif

THAT is a cool job JillA! TOTALLY.. so when my architectural millwork firm sent a container to Barbados a few years back you could have totally hooked me up?

Ah.... I do administrative assisting now. I used to be an office manager for an architectural millwork firm, and before that I was a youth pastor.

I could have totally hooked you up! We go to pretty much every continent, anywhere a ship can go we can go too! I also came to Philly on business a few times as the Philly office is the US headquarters, and the port is here too where many of our ships sail off the east coast. So, I met my American love through work therefore I'm happy I worked there star_smile.gif

A youth pastor - that must have been a rewarding job for you to do.

CanadaWhat do you do?
Sometimes I wonder, what do you do? Often people speak about their jobs & bosses, good and bad and it makes me wonder what you all do. I'm just curious biggrin.gif

When I was employed in Canada, I used to work for a shipping agency. I handled customer service, import and export. So say you were moving from Canada or the US to Australia, NZ, South America, Africa, you'd call me and I'd provide you with a rate. If you liked the rate, you'd make the booking with me and I'd arrange a shipping container to go to your home or business or whatever and also handle the customs paperwork. We made bookings for lots of interesting stuff, pork, beef, airplane parts, tires, and had a lot of big companies as customers, like Walmart, Old Navy, Sobeys. It was a good job and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Now that I'm legal to work, starting to look for a new job and it made me think: what do you all do?

Canadawhy did u choose to live in US instead of Canada?
That's a good question.... my husband was 100% willing to move to Canada.... but he has a really good job and makes great $$ and has excellent benefits, so it made more sense for me to come here. He could support me fine, but on my salary at home I don't think I could have supported both of us on my salary.

I do often think about the maternity leave issue, as I want to have kids and am not taking 6 weeks.... I wish it was a year here like Canada.... I think health care can be better here if you have insurance obviously, I have a really good doctor and have seen a different side of health care. Education is hard to say because I have no experience with the education system here, but have heard some horror stories so I'm biased to say Canada is better.

Being a Montrealer, I am a HABS fan through and through! My Dad had season tickets growing up and we went to so many games. I used to LOVE Jose Theodore, he was one sexy goalie if you ask me. Now I love Saku Koivu just because he's been through so much personally and is a great leader. They are going through some ####### right now, but I hope to see them bounce back soon! I have some great memories of the old Montreal forum (that's now a shopping mall/cinema!)

**forgot to say, Americans generally have no idea the Canadiens are referred to as the HABS in Canada. So when I speak of the Habs they have no clue what that is so I have to explain where the nickname came from, etc.

I fully intend on asking all of my Canadian forum friends my ridiculous AOS questions when the time comes. I've been looking into the process a little here and there, but I'm trying to restrain myself until after I have the interview done and over with. I don't want immigration information overload! Overall, the process looks fairly simple. The only annoying thing is that medical form I-693 you need to get a civil surgeon to fill out...

I didn't do the medical form the civil surgeon needs to fill out and got approved without an RFE.... I did attach a letter to my vaccination worksheet stating that all of my vaccines were up to date, etc. I could show you a copy if you want when it's your time.

And regarding AOS questions: I never posted in the AOS forum either laughing.gif whenever I had q's I posted in the good ol Canada forum where I knew I'd get trusty answers from my peeps! You'll be all good here!

I know what you mean about overload, I refused to even read about AOS until I got here.... my brain could only handle so much at a time! So once I got here, married, took a deep breath and began researching!

Well, I was fine with NOT doing anything until he asked a couple of random questions and I didn't know the answers! Something about more "proof" and forms and what all is needed this time around. OMG, I could've knocked him in the head. I JUST got back to "normal" and stopped worrying about paperwork and he has to go off and ask questions. *sigh* Oh, well!

Trust me, I fully plan on asking for opinions in the Canadian forum too... whistling.gif

You don't need more "proof" for AOS, that is when you send in the package! All you need is the marriage cert. If you get called for an interview, yes you need proof to bring to the interview of course.

CanadaCanadian travel with AP, What to say when re-entering US?
I recently used my AP to return home from Canada as well, travelling by car. This is how it went:

Drove up to the border guard, handed him my passport with AP copies inside.

BG: Citizenship
ME: Canadian
BG: Where are you going & why
ME: Philadelphia, I live there
BG: How long were you away and what were you doing
ME: 2 weeks visiting family and friends

At this point he had looked at the AP and said "you have to be paroled in, please go inside" and he shot my passport with AP inside a tube to the office. Went into secondary, had to wait a while because it was busy then the BG inside processed my AP. Quite easy and simple!

Also even if there are warning signs we're blinded by love.

I look back on everything that happened in that relationship and it changes your perception. You saw it one way for so long and then you leave and you see the other sides, but it takes accepting to see those other sides. That's a process. It doesn't just happen.

I don't think people who are in love want to see the people they love in a bad light that's obvious. Sometimes the signs are there but we just don't want to see them. Other times we just don't see them at all.

My question is... could you and would you stand by someone like this and for how long?

Would you cut your losses right away? Would you try to gather all of the evidence you can before making a decision? Would you try to stick up for him in the media?

I imagine it's so hard.

I agree with you 100%! My last relationship before this one was volatile, looking back. At the time I was in denial about everything and wanted to believe him when he was telling me lies. My heart knew they were lies, but I chose to believe him. So one day I'm on our computer and I found an e-mail he had sent to his ex-GF that I was sure he still had feelings for stating she was really his soulmate and he couldn't wait to be with her again.... she lived out of Canada at the time and was waiting for her to come back. It crushed me and when I confronted him, he cried and said it wasn't true what he wrote to her, he really loved me and begged to give him a second chance. I did, stupidly! Love is so freaking blind and stupid I had no clue how dumb I was. The signs were there alright but I chose to ignore them. The breaking point came when we were discussing what would happen if I became pregnant and he said that if I didn't get an abortion, he'd break up with me as he was never wanting to be a father. The day he said that I dumped him and never looked back. Looking back, I'm like how the hell was I so blind and stupid? All the signs were there he wanted to get back with his ex and I chose to ignore them and play the fool. He was wrong for me in every way, but I pretended to only see the good and ignore the bad.

I don't think that's true at all! I kept 1 BMO Mastercard, just to use when I go back to Canada and to book Air Canada flights on, etc. They were happy to send my statement here to the US. Also when I went to cancel 2 others as I only wanted to keep 1, they tried to get me to keep it active! "Even when you move to the US, you'll be coming back to Canada often to visit I'm sure, you'll need a Canadian CC" it was really hard to get them to cancel it! They were more than willing to switch my statement over here.

To be completely honest here, I'm always a little friendly with the border guys going into the US blush.gif Its not always flirting, its usually just playing really innocent and smiling a lot... I've snaked out of a couple situations using this method. Once, I was driving over by myself with a bunch of stuff in my car going to Cedar Point in Ohio by myself! The guy was like, you're going to Cedar Point by yourself? I was like "no sir, I'm meeting people there" **bats eyelashes** and he gave me an odd suspicious look and said... "Ok... have fun..." On another occasion, I got my brother into the US with no ID other than his DL. I said he didn't know of the requirements, and that I promised he was born in Canada. The guy said, "buddy, you are really lucky, your sister just saved your a$$" So really, they are just human! Pop, we all know you're a knockout... USE IT! laughing.gif

On a more serious note, how specific should one be when compiling a list of goods your importing at the POE? Is it enough to just say, "one box of childhood toys, 2 boxes of books, 2 boxes of shoes" etc. Or should I specifically write out each item? Please say no!! lol

Again, I had a really detailed list (20 pages LOL!) and they didn't ask, it went like this: (I used those plastic bins with snap on lid)

BIN # 1:

Books

BIN # 2:

Kettle, dishes, cutlery, blender, george forman grill

Yes I was that specific! When packing I just had my list open on the computer and would update it. But I don't think it needs to be THAT detailed at all!

But you know how it goes, you have it they don't ask, you don't have it they're gonna ask!

You would think that they would allow 1 personal import per person?

How will they know if the car is 6 months or a year? I mean, do they ask for the bill of sale? A 2009 could potentially be a year old?

Trying to save some money here... Lol'! Hoping if I cross at 5am, they'll be passive lol'!

You'd think so eh!? You know what, I think it's just going to depend who you get at the border that day. But you'll have to be prepared for either scenario. As Krikit said they'll ask you for the ownership/bill of sale, but they didn't ask me for any of that. It was almost TOO easy, I was so prepared for everything and they didn't ask anything. I even had a 20 page packing list detailing what I was bringing with me and they didn't even ask!

Well, the visa is already activated.... you're just using it. So you drive up, hand them your passport and tell them you're coming in on a K-1 visa. They'll keep your passport, give you a slip, then send you over to secondary. You'll wait for them to call your name and then they'll process you in. Once that's done you will import your car. If you're crossing at the Peace Bridge you'll go over to the Customs building. If you're crossing at Queenston it's in the same building. You'll need your registration and your letter of compliance. You'll also need to tell them the value of the vehicle. Low-ball it because you may have to pay State taxes when you go to register it. Here's the Kelley Blue Book site if you need help. Hopefully, your car isn't new, otherwise you'll need to pay duty on it.

Someone else will be able to help you out regarding crossing with a child.

Thanks for the info....what's considered new? My car will be 5 months old when I cross.

I think JillA had mentioned that PA had no State taxes for her, but maybe I should double check to make sure there are no weird stipulations...

I will be crossing at Lewiston smile.gif

I crossed at Lewiston and they did not ask me the value of my car, I didn't know you had to pay duty on a new car, I suppose it has to do with the person working that day.... the guy had to pull out a binder to look up what to do, what forms to fill out.... My car was 3 yrs old but they didn't even ask and I would have just guessed the value. No state taxes on my car in PA, but maybe that's cause my car wasn't "new"..... I don't think it should make a difference, new or old. If you're importing it for your own personal use, then that's that!

Isn't there a token entry fee.. of like $7.00 or something? And is there POE reviews somewhere on VJ to take a look see (along the top blue bar underneath the happy couples) ? Perhaps check out your POE, cause they all seem to do things just a little bit differently.

Yes it was $6 for me!

I would also bring the registration with you, to prove it's in your name, etc.... Just to be safe, bring everything you may be asked for by an ####### border guard.

CanadaCamping in Wheatley, Ontario this weekend :)
Awww have fun! I'm not a big camping person myself, every summer I used to go to Banff "camping" but it was in my family's winnebago, not a tent.
