Thanks Sapphire! I never thought about that and technically, it will be my best friend filling out the form.

I just figured I couldn't collect EI if I was living in the States as well. Is that possible and I was just misinformed?

Yes! Many of us collect EI when moving to the US, it doesn't matter. Now, lately alot of people on K-1s have been getting rejected, so it's not a guarantee you'll be approved. But it's worth the try!

Two things jump out at me while reading this thread. One is yours JillA that says "now, lately, alot of people on K-1's have been getting rejected..." What can you tell me about that? It may be because they're not following the rules, but I'd sure like to know why.

The second comment was the OP saying because she was quitting that she wouldn't be able to get EI, and minnew saying that she didn't think she could collect EI until her EAD.

domegirl, yes, you can quit, and it can say you quit on the ROE...and don't wait for the ROE before you apply either. You've quit to relocate to the US to marry your husband, or live with your husband, so you can collect EI.

minnew, I did hear that people are not eligible for EI between their arrival date in the US and their EAD now as well, however two things to keep in mind. One is that you have to apply for your benefits before 30 days are over from your leaving your past job. You should apply for your EAD as soon as you get married, it shouldn't take that long to come in, much faster than they've been in the last few years anyway, and you'll get your monies backdated (minus 2 weeks), from your EAD approval date.

Hi Carla,

Jenni and Bo recently applied for EI and was refused, they sent her a letter stating until she could prove she was eligible to work (EAD or GC), she was not entitled to EI (she is on a K-1). Someone else was also refused, I can't recall who now. Anyway someone posted in the EI thread about recent changes how K-1's no longer get the EAD stamp at ANY poe and that may mean K-1's no longer can collect EI? Not sure, I even told Jenni to talk to Donna at the EI office she helped me and I am collecting it.

No, once you get a job you would inform them to stop the payments. You are eligible to collect for a full year. Not sure if you've looked at the "EI" thread pinned at the top of this forum, but it has all the info you need to know about applying for EI!!

My bosses will not be "letting me go". They see it as me quitting to go to live in Florida therefore I wouldn't be able to collect any EI when quitting. One of my bosses is pretty bitter about it my leaving.

They always thought I was lying about having found my best friend from high school in Florida on Facebook and reuniting with him and falling in love. That was until I said I was going to Florida for a long weekend and then a month later he was up here to visit me and they met him.

Then it became a battle with everything at the beginning. My one boss left me alone about it, just randomly asking me how everything is going, genuinely concerned.

The other boss is an A** about it. Sneaking behind my back, asking other people in the office if they know my plans, trying to get stuff out of my best friend, coming to me and telling me I HAVE to give him 2 months notice before I decide to leave....its all very sketchy which is why i am keeping everything on the down low.

The day I go for my medical will be: " I have an appt. with my general practitioner", and any other little appointments I may have related to the visa like going to the translator will be done on my lunch hour so no one figures anything out.

The day of my interview will be: "I have an appointment I have to go to but will be in the office before lunch time."

Well you can still quit and collect EI in this case from what I've read. Because technically your reason is because you have no choice but to quit and relocate to be with your spouse. I would definitely still apply, I wouldn't count yourself out! I'm going to ask my employer to write "relocated for spouse" on my record of employment, but if they don't, I bet that would still be okay.

Oh yeah, don't rule it out because you quit! I quit too, my ROE stated no such thing about reason for quitting due to relocation for spouse. I was approved, so I don't see that being a problem.

I definitely tailored my spending habits too when moving here.... it's always in the back of my mind that every time I pull out my debit card, I'm spending hubby's $$ laughing.gif I know it's "ours" since we're married but you know what I mean. I'm not contributing financially so I don't do much shopping or anything. He always encourages me to go out and get myself something nice if I feel like it, so I'll treat myself once in a while. But I don't "NEED" any new clothes, etc. I may want them but wants and needs are 2 different things and I'm being responsible about spending. I am getting EI but luckily that's more back up $$, I am keeping it put in my Canadian account as savings and transfer here and there when needed.

Sounds all too familiar to me!! Don't worry, you're not alone. $$ worries are probably 90% of most people's #1 worry in life! What I did to solve the problem, was I moved out of my apartment a few months before my Montreal interview. Put all of my furniture in storage (which conveniently happened to be free in my sister's garage), and moved back in with my Mom!! She was happy about that, because we got to spend lots of time together before I moved, and it helped me save a TON of money. I worked up until 5 days before the big move, and every penny just went into savings because my Mom didn't charge me for anything. Lived there 4.5 months. So with all the savings, I paid off the amount on my credit card, paid off my car loan, and had some extra to bring with me! I know it's not possible for everyone to do that, but it really worked for me! If I was paying a grand in rent every month until the day I moved, I truly would have been broke and/or moved with my debts.

CanadaFrustration towards marriage -- any help, opinions, relief?
I don't think you're being paranoid at all...

If my fiancee had said to me "I wish they wouldn't force us to marry right away, it'd be nice to get to know each other in the sense of living together and working toward something without all of that first..." it would raise a red flag...

The word "force" and "marriage" should not be used in the same sentence, and he should not feel he is being forced... yes the 90 day window can be slightly inconvenient, but it shouldn't be seen as a way to live together, get to know your SO, and if it doesn't work out, go home.... This is a serious and life changing commitment, not to be taken lightly!

If you want to spend the rest of your life with this person, whether or not you've lived together shouldn't matter. After all, not everyone lives together before marriage. Of course, you have to get used to your SO's annoying habits and all that, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Maybe his comment was off the cuff, but if it were me, I'd sit down and have a serious conversation about this.... is he REALLY ready?

Thanks, everyone!

Will post an update to let you know getting a CA DL procedures, and if you need to take the road test in San Francisco.

Who does? Most call the license plate a plate, and the little stickers that denote the month and year that your registration expires the tag wink.gif

They call a plate a tag here too. When I was getting my car imported, the place called to say "your tag is ready for pick up" and it's called "Hendrix Auto Tags". I just notice everyone says tag instead of license plate

CanadaBackwards Question- Visiting my fiancé in Canada
QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Apr 15 2009, 05:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When my fiance came across the Canadian border for the first time to meet me he was grilled and send to secondary. But, in the Canadian border official's defense, the case did look quite suspicious. He was coming to Canada to meet a girl he met on the internet, and was living in North Carolina with a NC license but had Colorado state license plates on his car. Weird thing, they asked him for my phone number and called me to confirm I was expecting a visitor... So, it seems like you can snake your way out of bad situations in Canada better than you can with American border guards. It helps that 3 of my aunts work at the Peace Bridge and one is an immigrations officer smile.gif

I have not been able to find ANYBODY that can do them anywhere near here. A lot of shops around here have even stopped doing US passport photos, and none of them locally have ever done Canadian.

The Atlanta consulate said maybe a Sears portrait studio can do it. I'm hesitant though...I've not read good things about box photography studios...and I used to work at an Olan Mills for a while tongue.gif

I found a forum today that had HORROR stories about trying to get Canadian passports renewed from the US. People submitting photos 3 or 4 times and still can't get them done so that passport Canada will accept them! There are chains of photo shops who now refuse to do Canadian photos because they're so damn picky!

I'm thinking I'm not gonna get home any time soon sad.gif

Wow ohmy.gif This info is crazy!! My passport expires in about 2 years which makes me think that I should get passport pictures done on a visit home, before I am set to apply for a new passport

CanadaLess Harassment When Crossing By Land or Air???
QUOTE (BermyCat @ Apr 16 2009, 10:06 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It's definitely not the word choice of black instead of African-American that caused the negative response. It's the fact that the man's colour was included at all. Generally, had someone had a scary experience with a white border and customs officer, they would have simply called him a "scary man". Race only seems to come into it when the person we are describing negatively is non-white.

~ Catherine

You're so right Catherine. It's always in a negative tone, if the IO had been nice and friendly the colour of his skin most likely wouldn't have been brought up i.e. "the sweet and friendly black guy" it had to be that he was scary. Oh gee I'll stop now because I don't feel like getting into a heated argument today and I could go on for awhile

Ohhh that sounds interesting. I wonder how much they are.

Stupid question, do we buy these envelopes at Canada Post?? And technically, we decide which envelope to give to them to send our passport back correct? Actually, I read somewhere that is has to be an envelope that requires a signature.

Either way, do we buy them at Canada Post?

Yes, at any Canada Post location. You don't decide the envelope, the size is on the instructions sent by Montreal. If you get the wrong size it can be refused. The signature option is your choice, but a good choice to make due to the importance of whats inside.

CanadaWhat's the best (cheap) way to move your stuff?
QUOTE (DeadPoolX @ Feb 18 2009, 01:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I wouldn't recommend U-Haul. The condition of their trucks are terrible. The trucks move slower than a lawn mower and turns about as well as brick. You might get lucky, but overall, I'd avoid them like the plague.

If you want to drive and use a truck, I'd suggest renting a van or SUV from Budget. That's what my wife and I did. Granted, we drove from Edmonton to Vancouver (which isn't nearly as far as you're traveling), but the vehicle we rented was very large, could fit a ton of stuff, and was much nicer to drive in than any U-Haul truck.

UPS and FedEx are expensive, but if you're shipping anything and want it there quickly (and intact), I'd go with FedEx. UPS broke some of my DVD cases, all of which were hard plastic. The DVDs themselves were okay, but the fact remains, it takes a lot of force to break one of those hard plastic cases.

Unless you sell most of your stuff or send only a few items by FedEx (or UPS, if you really want to), it'll cost more than $500 for the entire thing. Renting a vehicle, whether it's U-Haul or Budget, will be pricey.

True, BUT Uhaul recently changed the regulations due to accidents/complaints. For long-haul trips, the truck cannot have over a certain mileage, for example 60,000. Once it hits that number, they retire the trucks to local moves. Usually the trucks being used for long hauls are in better condition.

I was scared of Uhaul too due to all of the horror stories but didn't really have another option for a one way move that we wanted to handle ourselves. It was a good truck though with no issues, maybe we got lucky.
JillAFemaleCanada2009-02-18 13:16:00
CanadaWhat's the best (cheap) way to move your stuff?
I was originally going to hitch my car on the back of a 17 foot UHAUL truck, but after reading many horror stories and investigations about UHAUL hitches and how easily they get undone from wind or even a bit of speed, (like over 45 MPH) I bagged that idea. I was too nervous. In the end I drove my car packed with stuff, and my fiancee drove the truck and we just followed eachother. Granted we only drove from Toronto-Philadelphia and that was 1 day of driving. It would have been nice to be together in the car or truck and enjoyed the ride together but I didn't want to do the hitch after all. The cost of the truck including gas (2 fillups) was $750 USD.

It bothers me to have to carry the green card but I do. I have photocopies at home and in our safety deposit box, though. I also don't know my SSN, but one of the advantages of having a military ID card (Joe is retired army) is that it has both my and his SSN on it. That is my most useful card because yes, you get asked for your SSN all the time!

When I was waiting for my I-751 to be removed though, I didn't carry my passport with the I-551 stamp with me. I never received an NOA, so I carried a photocopy of the passport page with the I-551 and my expired green card. Hehehe, I felt guilty doing so, worried about if I ever got stopped but I have never had to show my immigration status except for my DL.

When flying, I just use my DL - leave the passport at home unless I am travelling to Canada.

You know what I wonder - say you do get stopped and asked to show your immigration status. Well say you're American and my husband doesn't carry around his passport or birth certificate, all he has is a DL. That's what I have too is a DL, so my point is how do you "prove" you're American anyhow!

Oh and I found a job posting at ICE, but you have to be a US citizen to apply. I wouldn't mind working at ICE! laughing.gif

Good Luck Jill! I'm sure you'll find something soon.

I'm going to be nervous about finding a new job. I really hope the economy picks up a bit soon, for everyone's sake!

Thanks, tell me about it! A year ago when I started this whole process, I had a job lined up at our Philly office! It was a done deal, they were just waiting for me to arrive and be legal! Then the week I move here, they implement a hiring freeze due to the slow times. The freeze is still on, and then a month ago implemented a new rule called the "no family" rule, meaning spouses, siblings, etc cannot work together! My husband works there but a totally different dept, floor, I would never even see him (which is good, I don't want to work with him that's for sure). But the rule is the rule so it bites, 2 strikes against me and my plan of working there didn't pan out.

My last job before moving was with IBM, working on the Calgary Health Region account - basically handling/coordinating all their IT needs.

I've done lots of stuff though - I basically chose that job because I could work from home. good.gif

I would LOVE to work from home! Yeah!
