CanadaHappy day - looks like I have acredit card to build credit with!
Capital One sent me a credit card application in the mail, they must have gotten my name from a mailing list or something? As they are not my bank. Anyway, I applied on line and even listed myself as a homemaker since I have no job yet, and I was approved!! Not sure the limit yet, it's probably small like $500. I should get that info in the mail with my new card in a few weeks! So it's a good start for me, to start slowly building credit in my own name! I'll use it a few times per month and pay it off.

QUOTE (carrieandadrian11 @ May 5 2009, 12:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yah i guess I was naive on the whole issue. It was my understanding that CERTAIN things wouldn't be covered, like you couldn't go and get porcelain veneers and like you said Jill, couldn't go and just deicde to get work done that wasn't necessary. But procedures such as root canals and fillings I assumed would be covered since no one would elect to have these done. One root canal alone is $1500 (with crown).

Maybe my parents are wrong and they did have a cap on their but don't remember?? I guess everyone else knows about this cap but me haha

I just wish I had done my research before leaving Korea, where it was a lot cheaper/free. Ugh, c'est la vie!!!

I hear you, it sucks! Yeah my husband already spent his cap for this year, because he also needed a root canal and some other important work done. Unfortunately we've already spent $800 out of pocket and for the rest of the year will too.

CanadaDental Insurance/Vent/Rant
Oh yeah, most dental plans have a cap, I'd be surprised to hear ones that don't. My plan in Canada had a $1200 cap too, and my husband's is also $1500. It doesn't surprise me, at all. If plans didn't have caps on them, alot of people would probably take advantage of it being "free" and get all their old fillings replaced, etc.

There are probably some benefits that go beyond Geico. If nothing else, AAA is recognized in Canada, so if you're driving there at all, you're covered.

Yes but someone else on here said that they called Geico from Vancouver and they still sent someone to help!

Hi Landa,

If you all ready have your medical, there is no need to go early, just arrive on the day.

And make sure you arrive early that day! Your interview letter might say 8 or 9am, but arrive by 7am! It's "first come first serve" so the earlier you arrive the better.

QUOTE (DeadPoolX @ May 6 2009, 12:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Pay-as-you-go isn't crappy at all. The level of service depends on the provider (which is exactly the same when having a service plan) and the overall expense might be lower if you rarely use your cell phone.

My wife and I have a 3-year family share plan with Telus. That worked out really good for me since I was able to get a Blackberry Pearl 8130 at no cost. However, my wife uses her phone so infrequently, she wishes she had gone with a pay-as-you-go phone instead.

OMG I hate Telus!! I had SO many problems with them in Canada I couldn't wait to end my contract! Every time I hear TELUS my blood pressure raises mad.gif

I can't believe I have never heard of Customhouse! I went on website but I didn't see anywhere to apply. Do you apply online? How do you set up an account?

Thanks smile.gif

An FYI - I know my bank at home, President's Choice, said that technically you are not allowed to have a bank account if you don't live in Canada. Of course, I doubt no one listens to that. But, I wouldn't make a note of telling them. Perhaps things have changed as I found this out a few years ago. But that's as far as I know. Maybe each bank is different too.

Perhaps PC Banking doesn't let you have an account, but any other bank will let you have an account you just have to tell them you are NOT a resident of Canada so that they can tax you on your interest more. My US fiance and I just opened a new Canadian account last week and they had no problems with him being from the US and even opened it up with only his Driver's License and a credit card # (no passport or SSN).

Yeah maybe it is just PC?? I kept it open anyway, have for years and never had a problem. The address is my parent's but I don't foresee me using it THAT much. I haven't thought much about banking. Ugh another thing to think about smile.gif

Oh thanks Jill! I don't know if I'll overly need to use it. I just paid off my $35,000 student loan a few weeks ago WAHOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! But man I could have used this in Korea!! sad.gif $50 a pop to send money home. Ah well. Good to know now! smile.gif

Carrie, will you be applying for EI? Because EI gets deposited into your Canadian account, and I transfer it when needed via CH to my US account. It comes in handy for that!

Congrats on paying off your student loan!

Go to: http://www.customhouse.com/login/ click on "create account". You can begin the application process online, but they will need to call you and discuss some things over the phone. Also you will have to fax them some ID.

I informed RBC of my new address in the US so they could update my profile, etc. there was no issue there at all. I plan on keeping my account open for a long time there.

Is it legal if you become a U.S. greencard holder to send money you have earned back to Canada in order to pay off an existing debt/loan?

Are there limits on how much money you can send abroad?

If everything is legal, based on your experience, what is the best way to send money back? Wire transfer?

Thanks
-Joe

Yes, that's legal! Many people move with credit card debt, or auto loan, etc.

Well limits are usually anything over $10,000 is considered suspicious so I'd keep it under that!

www.customhouse.com is the best money transfer service, and it's completely free! I use it often and it's a really good system. Or, you could pay whatever debts you have online, if that's possible in your case. I still have a Canadian credit card and pay it online.

Well, today was horrible.

Last night asome of my dinner lodged in my esophagus. I couildn't swallo anything not even saliva. It was very uncomfortable and kept me up all night. Today I couldn't make Magic's appointment because I had to go to my doctor who sent me to a GI doctor. I'm fortunate that both were able to see me today. I got sedated and the GI doc used an endoscope to dislodge the obstruction. I have to go back after my Bermuda trip to get some kind of ring in my throat stretched. He didn't want to do it today because my throat had become so raw.

I was able to drop Magic off at her vet this morning before all the doctor visits. The ultrasound showed that her kidneys were mishapen and scarred. When she recovers from this current toxicity problem, they'll biopsy her kidneys to check for cancer. I'm so scared for her. I really hope that whatever she has will be treatable enough that I can have a few more years with her. Of course, if keeping her alive will painful for her, I'll put her to sleep. She hanging out at the vet's overnight because I was in no condition to learn who to give her fluids and medication. We visited her for a little bit after my endoscopy.

Phil's been fussing over me since he drove me home. I love that man. wub.gif

You'll most likely need your vehicle's compliance letter; in order to import your car wherever you do it. To get this, you have to contact the head office usually of the auto maker (GM, Mazda, etc).

Also Gieco insured my car even when I had Ontario plates on it and I still had my Ontario license/registration.

The answer, in my opinion is no.

I would say no, as you were not denied a Visa. In your interview, they will likely ask you if you have ever been denied entry into the US and that is where you can explain and be truthful about what happened.

'wis-can wow how exciting that Pete is renovating and so handy. You must be excited!

Huggles, I know what you mean about just starting out....eventually you'll settle in to a home and start your own life. We've all been there, living with parents to get started. It's smart to help save money smile.gif

Jill, I never thought of that! So I give them the new address and they update it on the system? Thanks for letting me know. Then when I start filing AOS or SSN, I can use the new address?

The home will just be in my fiancés name, but if we have utilities and bank accounts in both names, that should be good proof to start building no?

Will they need proof at POE for the new address? Or I can just tell them?

I feel like I have a million things to remember when I get there!

Yes! At the POE, the guy actually opened my package and got me to confirm the US address where I will be residing, it was the same as my forms so I just confirmed it. In your case, you update him with the new address. Maybe just have it written down to give to him or something. You don't need proof, they'll take your word for it! Alot of people do that, change the address I mean so not to worry. Yes then when you file for AOS/SSN put your NEW address on the forms, as that is where you'll be receiving any notices from USCIS!! Biometrics appt, EAD, AP, etc!!

I think that as long as your name is on the utilities, joint bank accounts, that's a good start.... Hopefully you won't get called for an interview and won't need that proof anyway! smile.gif

JillAFemaleCanada2009-05-10 22:05:00

I need to find that link--as I gave step by step instructions on how to do it! It is very easy, pretty much no different then signing up for any other account, just follow thier instructions. You have to send in prrof of ID a photo copy of 2 pieces of ID (maybe it is 3??) u can either mail it in, fax it in, scan and secure email it in! Plus you have to mail in your banks info the same way! I will look in a bit for that post, but its not difficult to do! i walked by their main office in downtown Victoria many times! Staff is super professional, even managed to chat hockey on 1 call! takes a few days to set up. Once ur all set up a transaction takes between 3-4 business days to go through. if ya go Electronically (EFT) it is FREE. They do offer a wire service which is faster, but costs $$. And when ur making a transaction, its almost like ur in vegas! As you can see the rate they are going to give you, so you can either 1) accept it 2) say nope and cancel it or 3) hit the reset button (which is by the rate) and the rate may go up, down or stay the same, lol! Its not a huge change, but depending on how much $$ ur transferring it can make a difference. So even after ur done, ur always asking urself, should I have waited? lol Never had 1 problem with them! back in February, i added another account to be associated with CH, so you have to send them the info--then they have to verify info with the bank---they send them a fax requesting info. But it was taking awhile, so CH said, lets do a 3 way call with ur bank! CH set it up, and fixed the problem. They went totally out of their way and paid the long dist charges, lol they rock!!

Wow!! There's an office on the Island?? That Victoria?? Wish I could set up before I move, I'm only 3 hours from there! Oh well. Thanks so much for this info!! Just one of the many links I'm adding to my favourites before moving, which won't be until middle of August. I hope to get an account set up asap after I move. I need a SSN to get married anyways, so I'll set up an account then too, and get going with this. Wow...those first few days are going to be busy!! lol....

You can set up before you move, it's all online or over the phone! You don't need an SSN to set up Custom House, just a few pieces of ID.

I'm just bumping the thread to ask a couple questions! I'm thinking I want to keep a Canadian credit card to use in the US until my fiance can add me to his accounts. I'm just concerned about paying it... Everyone uses Custom House to transfer funds from their Canadian accounts to their new American accounts, but can you transfer funds from your American account back to your Canadian account? And could my fiance transfer money from his account into my Canadian account if the names on the accounts are different, or do you need to show they are held by the same person?

We have never really figured out the whole money transferring thing...

Yes, it's a good idea to do that, then at least you have some sort of card until you are added to your husband's card. Right now, I still have my Canadian CC and debit card to use when I go home, and to book flights with.

Anyhoo, Custom House is good for all sorts of $$ transfers. You can use it for USD-CAD or CAD-USD, among other currencies. So yes, as long as you have your fiancee's name on the account you can do that. I added Glen's name to the account at CH, it was fine. Now your fiancee transferring $$ from his bank account to your bank account, I don't know if he can do that because it's different funds. You should use CH for that purpose.
