Chalet sauce is very popular indeed, I don't eat it as it has chicken fat in it. But I buy the packages in the store and my hubby loves it, I pour it over his chicken or even as a sub for poutine.

pretty common in the restaurants I worked at in Canada - nothing ike fresh, hot fries and a little ramekin of mayo to dip smile.gif

Oh yeah, that's soooo good! If anyone is familiar with LICKS in Ontario, they have this condiment called GUK... it's like mayo and relish mixed together, so yummy on a burger or fries dipped in it

Sombercat- I love the one of the three of you! They both look like they have arms around you- you are one cherished woman! biggrin.gif Our photo was taken at a Lake Ontario waterfront park. It was kind of far from our reception site, but the backdrop was just so great we made it work. Thanks for the complement.

Sprailenes- So gorgeous! I love the drama of the chandeliers. Were those one of the reasons for your choosing that venue?

to hope, would that happen to be in Burlington? That looks similar to the Burlington waterfront that I have walked a zillion times!

QUOTE (domegirl1978 @ May 27 2009, 12:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thanks for that Treble. Sometimes I feel so selfish that I want to do the things I want to and get things done. Then I think to myself...isn't it worth it to take the time to do things right before leaving so i don't forget something and screw myself up in the long run?

I'm thinking the best thing to do is put off putting in packet 3 right away and make sure all my documents and stuff are all in order so I don't drive myself nuts with that and just jump the gun and possibly screw something up there.

And honestly, I think I can deal with him being pissed off with me if I do choose to stay longer than he wants. He'll get over it at some point. The more I think about it, this stuff is to important to compromise on just because he may have a tantrum.

Yes you're right on! And if he has a tantrum over that, well, that's just immature wacko.gif

Jill,

I would totally do something like you did if given a choice. Wait 2-4 months to leave after getting the visa. But he would FREAK out. Literally. Go nuts.

All I'm saying now is give it a month-6 weeks after visa in hand and already he's acting like a spoiled child.

He did text me and apologize for freaking just now by the way. Saying hes sorry hes making me stress and just really wants to be with me. At least he acknowledges he's causing me more stress by saying these things.

Awww at least he apologized. I understand, I mean LD relationships are so HARD and in the end, you just want to be together! But it's important to not feel rushed and have your loose ends all tied up, so you're able to move with a clear mind that you did everything you needed to do in Canada.

I'm thinking thats what I may do. Just postpone sending in packet 3 for a month to 6 weeks and hope for the best after that.

I understand he's frustrated and wants me there right away but whenever we talk about this he always seems to forget that i'm the one leaving everything i know and love behind and i really want stuff settled before i leave for good. I guess he figures in his head that he should be the most important thing and he is but that doesn't take away from the fact that i have family and friends and responsibilities and obligations here that need to be dealt with.

Exactly right! Have you expressed that to him? Those feelings about why you want to stay a little longer

CanadaHow long after your approval did you move to the states?
I don't understand why your fiancee is being unreasonable about it... seems very logical to me, the reasons you want to stay a little longer. After all, you are uprooting your life to be with him and you want to stay and spend more time with loved ones, and pay down some debt! What's so wrong with that?

My interview was last July, I moved in November. Waited for a # of reasons.... I wasn't ready to move in July. Glen had a roomate, and we had nowhere to live together yet. I also wanted to spend my last summer in Canada with my friends and family. I also paid off my auto loan and credit card, so I'd move here debt free. There were a number of reasons, and in November we had a place to live, everything worked out so that's when I came. I just didn't feel a rush to go as soon as I got my Visa.

I've only been here a few days and it's so frustrating! I can't even get a hold of my Canadian bank by phone! sad.gif

Most people think that because Canada is connected to the US and so similar, that we transition the easiest. U don't find that too true. We still have many different cultural differences and it is gonna be a struggle to adjust. You get so caught up in wanting to be with your SO, that you don't anticipate the difficulty of adjustement. And because we ate Canadians people are not sensitive to what we go through.

Everyone here is well aware of my problems with the Canadian government.

I've noticed that the Canadian government is just as confused as the American government. For instance, I've gone back and forth with CIBC and Autoplan and each time I get contradicting information. Neither one knows what the other is doing and therefore, will say one thing while the other says something else.

Actually... that's how it's been for me with every section of the Canadian government so far. No one knows their a$$ from their elbow. Each department gives information that's either contradictory to another or just wrong.

Uhhh yeah, it's the government! Do you expect any less from any government wacko.gif

Guess it depends on the CC company... I was approved even though I stated I was a homemaker!

Hello, my name's Leighann - im a newcomer.

I know theres probably FAQ's or guides I should be reading about this, but to be honest iv been doing nothing but reading everything under the sun for months now and im still lost. sad.gif Heres my situation:

I wish to move to the United States, to work, and live. My boyfriend currently lives in Florida and I want more than anything to be down there with him. I cannot go to school, as I don't have the money to pay up front, my family will not support me in this. Nor would I make enough money to go to school, live on my own, and make monthly payments twords the 12 month $16,000 tuition. (I was told by the university that internationals either have to pay up front or make monthly payments and have it payed off by the time my course is done)

What other options do I have.Or is there something he can do? He is a born American Citizen. I don't want to rush and fake some marriage just to get into the country, and I don't exactly have any special qualifications. Do I just not qualify to even work down there?

Any advice/suggestions are very welcome! Thank you!

Welcome to VJ!!

Unfortunately, a work visa is hard to come by unless you have some very special skills and/or are sponsored by a US company. Your only option would be a Fiancee or Spousal Visa. No of course you should not "fake" the marriage, but many of us here going the K-1 Fiancee route have a civil ceremony upon arrival (as you must be married within 90 days) and have our big wedding later. Yes it's not ideal, but if you want to be with the one you love it's the only option. If you are engaged, or plan on being engaged in the near future and want to spend your life with your boyfriend, the fiancee visa may be the route for you.

If you go the K-1 route, you cannot work right away. After you are married and adjust your status, you also apply for a work document. This comes approx. 60-90 days after so you won't be working for a little while.

You don't really have any other options but marriage to move there legally. If you're not ready for that, you can visit as often as you like as long as you don't stay over 6 months!

Best of luck in your decision making, VJ is a great place to find out all the info you need!

QUOTE (BermyCat @ Apr 29 2009, 05:37 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When Phil and I got to the point in our relationship where we were almost sure we were going to get married and live in the US, what he really, really wanted to do was have me come live with him for six months and then marry and have me stay if everything went well. As a Bermudian and a Canadian, I've never needed to worry about visas and had visited the US more times than I can count. It sounded like a great plan.

I made him call USCIS first. He was told point blank that I could not enter the US with the intention of staying without first getting a visa. Phil tried the argument that I wouldn't know if I wanted to move sure for when I entered. I'd only know after we had spent six months together. He was told again that our plan was not legal. He asked to get transferred to a supervisor so they escalated the call to an immigration officer. The officer told him that us planning for me to stay unless we realized we couldn't live together was still entering with immigrant intent and illegal without a visa. The officer then told him that people do get away with this quite often but he wouldn't recommend it because we'd be screwed if we got caught. We were advised to get a K-1 visa.

Both immigration lawyers and USCIS immigration officers know immigration law ( though I know that for some lawyers and some IOs this is arguable ). Only one of those two types of people has something to gain by telling you what you want to hear.
