My Dad and stepmom travel alot, so they have an older neighbor man come over twice daily to feed and play with their kitty. Also take in the mail, etc. She pays him 10 bucks per day, and he is also the emergency contact for the alarm. In fact, they are going to HI next year for 3 weeks! I'm soooo jealous

But I know if you have a dog, it needs more companionship than a kitty.... I don't blame you on the neighbor thing, you don't want any funny activity going now hile you're away. So, where ya goin!? smile.gif

Canadaquestion about already having an american social security number
QUOTE (cdn_gewels @ May 25 2009, 04:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'm glad I came across this thread. I worked in the US back in 2004 for a year and they issued me a SSN. I didn't realize that the SNN sticks with me for life. I guess I was under the impression that I would get a new number with this whole process.

My question is.... should I call someone to give the number, because unfortunately I did not include it in the I-129F form.

Any suggestions?

No, that's not really necessary.... because most people who apply for K-1s, don't have SSN #'s so it's not required to input it on the form. When you file for AOS, put the SSN # on the AOS forms.

Yes the marriage cert is the only way to explain why your passport and GC have different last names on them. Mind you, people have told me when you come back to the US, they only ask to see your GC, not passport. But, better to carry the marriage cert with you to be safe!

Thanks for the info, Kathryn! I told my husband what you said and though we were annoyed the SS office here gave us misinformation, he said it's really no big deal to him since he's got the greencard and that's what his employer needs anyway. I guess it really doesn't make a difference if he gets a new card or not, but it's nice to know he can smile.gif

Yes as soon as I got my GC, I went to the local SSN office straight away and 5 days later, got my new card w/o restriction on it

Others that have their GC in married and passport in maiden carry their marriage cert to prove the name difference when going thru customs

Oh that is not cool at all. So basically there is nothing we can do before we get the GC

How do you get your GC with your new name? Do you just fill the papers with your new last name?
Doesn't is matter if your passport is still with your maiden name?

Fill all your AOS documents with your new married name, then your GC will come with your new name on it

In particular, I have a friend who puts All Dressed chips into their Subway subs. I like the taste and texture, but never think to do it.

How about dipping french fries in a Wendy's frosty or McDonald's icecream?

That's my fave!

I do it with my Subway sammies too. I usually get a bag of the baked Lays and throw some in. I don't do it with any other sandwich though.

Once while camping- some friends were eating their hotdogs with crush Dorito's on them. Tried it and it was pretty good.

My plan is to get my SSN right away, since I won't be getting married until I've been in the US for about 6 weeks. I'll file my AOS paperwork in my married name, and then after I receive my GC, I will go back to the SSN office and have my name changed and have the "not valid for work" stamp removed at the same time. As for the DL, I can't get it until I have my EAD in the state of Colorado, so I will get it in my married name when I have the opportunity. Then of course, I will change the name on my passport when it expires in 2014. I find it easier to think of things in steps! It would definitely be easier to do it now, then to wait and change everything over after you've been married for a while, but not impossible. I know you wanted to keep your maiden name until after your formal ceremony in Canada, and if that's really important then I would stick to the plan. The big thing is the GC. I'd get that in my married name and wait and change the rest later. I think it would be worth the extra couple trips you'd need to take to the SSN office and the DMV.

Huggles, you probably know this already, but by "right away" you will need to give it a few weeks.... for your info to be put into the system. If you go right away, you may be told to come back in a few weeks. I went 3 weeks after arrival and I was in the system. Others went a few days after and they were told they weren't in the system yet

Your greencard will be whatever name is in your passport (that's what the embassy in Montreal told me!) so maybe you could only change your passport to your married name, that way your greencard would be in the married name.

That's interesting, as it contradicts what I've read on here. Others have put their new married name on their AOS application and then received their GC with their married name on it. It won't match your passport, but you carry your marriage cert when going thru customs to prove the name change. Then, when it's time to apply for a new passport you change your name at the same time. This is because Passport Canada no longer offers a simple name change, you have to re-apply for a new passport

So I was planning to keep my maiden name until I have my church wedding in September 2010. I know that I 100% want to change my last name, but wanted to kind of keep my courthouse wedding on the downlow for now.

However, I'm debating doing my AOS in my married name, so that I will get my greencard in my married name and not have to worry about changing it later.

Can I do that, and keep my SSN # and driver's licence in my maiden name until next year? Or, would that make things too complicated?

Should i just change everything now while I can and just go with my married name?

Name changes aren't really a big deal in my career but usually people are more well established in their career before they change their name. I keep regular contact with reporters and industry contacts, so I don't want to lose my name just yet because I'd like to establish myself in NYC first. However, on the other side of things, I don't really have a lot of contacts yet, so it might be easier just to go by my married name right off the bat....

I'm also debating hyphenating my name - although that would make it really long. The more I think about it, the more I think it will be easier to just change everything now.... Hmmm

What do you think?

I agree with the bolded part; if you're going to do it, do it all the way not half way then change the rest later. Since you're already going through the trouble of getting all these new things (SSN, DL, GC, etc). it will save you alot of hassle down the road. You'll basically be doing double the work. DEFINITELY get your GC in your married name, because I think to change it you have to pay for a new one which is expensive.

Also it may be better to get your new name "out there" before you become established in your career in NYC. But, all of this is simply my opinion LOL as I didn't change my name and am not even after our wedding next year smile.gif

Does he have any ties to Canada, to prove he'll be returning? Lease, bills, etc. There is no difference travelling while K-1 is pending, it is allowed. Here are some tips, copied from Flames9 signature:

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:
1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5) Pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ok, the address we have already filed with, is where we will be staying a short time. However, we do own the property, registered to my fiancé and will continue owning it. This us where I have forwarded my Canadian mail. When we do move, it will be up the road.

If we get called in for an interview, this is when we will need proof, right? If we show up to interview with all our proof, and it is for our new address, will they be ok with this? As long as all our stuff is together? Or will they get annoyed that we did not advise them of the change?

Thanks Jill!

This is the grey area - you are technically required by law to change your address with USCIS. BUT, they are incompetent sometimes and address changes don't get through when a case is pending. So, if you do change it halfway through, your important mail could get sent back (i.e. your biometrics appt) but if you don't, and go to the interview armed with evidence you moved, they may ask why you didn't change you address...

but yes the interview is when you will need proof, let's hope you don't get called for an interview biggrin.gif

CanadaChange of address...driving across POE
Poprocks, all I can say about changing your address during the AOS process is that it is strongly advised against.... you can probably search that on the AOS forum but I've read many times people suggesting NOT to change address while AOS is pending. Yes, it should work but apparently alot of the time it doesn't get down the line to the person adjudicating the file and it's a heck of a time trying to get your EAD/AP/GC..... so if there's any way you can keep the same address during the whole process, that's a good thing.... I know that's not always possible for people, as yes they move! And it's possible it would work, but I just heard it doesn't work too well.... Anyway, not sure what to suggest in this case.... Is there a chance you can put say your in-laws address or something that may live nearby, to be safe? Just so you're not changing while AOS is processing... Then, when GC is received and you're done with USCIS for a few years you can safely submit a change of address form....

Thank god because it saved me so much trouble, heartache, headache, tears and money! The only money I spent was on a "K-1 Fiancee do it yourself kit" I found on the internet a few months before I found VJ, it was sixty bucks and not very helpful. It was way out of date as it said you would get an EAD stamp at the POE, no doubt about it. So thank goodness I had VJ for everything from the K-1 package, interview prep, POE prep, car import, AOS help, then to remove conditons later!

Plus, I've met some wonderful people smile.gif
