I saw that too, she hasn't updated it, or so it appears. I clicked on her timeline, and she received her 2 year GC back in Dec.

I got pulled over, was driving my ontario car with my ontario license and got a ticket while AOS was pending. All I got was the ticket.

If I had been driving Jared's car, maybe it would have been different but I still could have said I was visiting. I don't think the cops have time to check up on me but it is really up to you.

Again, you can't get a license in a lot of states without a green card. And she hasn't been approved yet Jill, so she technically has no status even if she is going to have one soon.

I think the 10 day rule mostly applies to people who move from state to state. They've made the rule of licensing so hard most places that it is very hard for out of country folk to get a license 10 days after they arrive in their new state.

I think she has a GC though, according to her timeline. So she should be able to get a CA license without a problem now.

That law is interpreted differently by different cities here. Some cities have more interaction with immigrants and as such will have a more open minded policy concerning matters related to it. Burbank is..... well, Burbank is not a center for immigrants.

But based on her timeline, she has her GC, so should be aware of the 10 day rule as she is a resident now.

@ Jill - I met my hubby online. I responded to a pen pal ad. He was mostly looking for people in other countries to communicate with so he would have a couch to sleep on when he traveled. He actually didn't want to write to an American, as he wasn't interested in traveling to the U.S. However, I am so compelling that he just HAD to write devil.gif
We actually talked on the phone for 14 months before we met. I was being VERY VERY cautious. Also, I had not written to him because I was looking for a relationship, so I had to wrap my head around the idea that maybe we would click in person and I should just go ahead and meet him. After all those months of talking, we planned for him to come to GA, meet me and then, if we clicked, we would take a road trip up the East Coast to CT. He had plans for where he would travel to if we didn't click. My hubby has backpacked quite a bit and is very used to traveling wherever the wind blows you, so it didn't feel like all this pressure .... wow, he is coming for 3 weeks, ohmygod it has to work out!!! .... because we both knew we had options.

Something funny about our first time meeting: my husband's last girlfriend before me was a fricking fitness model. Normally, I think I have decent self esteem and feel comfortable in my skin. However, I am NOT anywhere near a fitness model, so I was feeling a bit insecure before we met and apparently made self deprecating remarks to my hubby. So, when we met, the first words out of his mouth were, wow, you are better than I thought! He caught himself and we both cracked up. Wonderful way to break the ice!!!

That's so sweet Autumn! I love hearing the stories how people met their SOs. That's funny how he said that, he must have been pleasantly surprised... and the rest is history!! You have a little Canam baby biggrin.gif

So those of you that met your hubby or wifey online, I have a question... it's not like a normal blind date where you can just meet up for coffee, then go home after.... how do you plan meeting an online love for the first time? I know if I told my Mom, I'm going to PHL to meet a guy I met online for the weekend, she probably would have freaked out! Not about meeting him online, but spending the whole w/e with the guy if we never met before.

Maybe I don't understand the question, but... how is planning to visit someone you've met online differ from someone you've met briefly in real life? You still need to plan the visit, finances, get a passport, get through customs, etc. It's really no different from any other long-distance trip.

How is meeting someone you've known and spoken to online any worse than visiting someone you've met for maybe a couple of days in real life? If anything, you've probably spoken more with the individual online (since you couldn't do a whole lot else). In both cases, you're visiting someone you don't really know. It's certainly no worse than a blind date.

I didn't say it was worse than meeting someone you know. It is different, not WORSE from an average blind date, meeting someone in your local town and then going home after. When meeting the person for the first time, in a new country, I was just curious of the logistics of it all. Where do you meet, stay, etc. You're in a different country so if it doesn't work out or you don't 'click' you can't go right home.

I've only met 2 friends online so far, Nevada and Amanda and they were great biggrin.gif

But I did meet this guy on ICQ (anyone remember that?) so many years ago.... he lived in Oakville too so we met at the local Starbucks. Our chats over ICQ were nice but in person, it was so not good.... we just didn't click and there was no physical attraction at all.... I was glad I could get in my car and go right home laughing.gif

It is totally different. My husband came to visit me first but his mom tried every way to go along with him and have him stay in a hotel with her while he visited me during the day. Freaking over protective much? I told my mom about it, she was fine, and my friend drove me to the airport to pick him up. We spent 3 days together. It was super awesome. We clicked right away. I was accustomed to meeting friends online, just never met a guy online who I felt a connection with in that manner.

Also I would never put out on a first date with anyone but ya I put out him on our first night together. laughing.gif

GREAT question.. it was NOTHING like a normal date.. I traveled 8 hrs to see this guy and wondered the whole way if he'd like me.. if I'd like him.. etc etc. We'd chatted on the phone for about 2-3 months and then we decided that we'd meet in person for a hiking/biking weekend getaway in Bar Harbor. I didn't tell ANYONE.. except for one close friend (for safety).. I just took a weekend trip myself, went to the hotel and met him.. it was awkward and strange and we were both totally freaked by it..

We'd been reading a book together over the phone at night and the icebreaker was when we read together after our first meal together.. something clicked in my mind between the guy on the phone who used to read to me, and this guy in front of me who was reading to me.. the two worlds collided and voila! I was hooked smile.gif

That's soooo sweet! I could imagine the first meeting being awkward, but I think that's normal for any first date. I just think it'd be wierd if you get there, don't hit it off at all, and your flight isn't for another day or two laughing.gif I think meeting online is so cool! If I never met Glen and was still single, I would have definitely been for meeting someone online.

I am generally a nice person and I usually think before I speak. I try not to criticize unless it's constructive, am not mean or rude to people in person, and am the same online. I try not to judge anyone or be rude online, because I don't do that in person. I act the same online as I do in person. I'm never vindictive or cruel, as some people can be online. I'm sure if you meet some of those rude arses in OT, they are sweet as pie in person.

Come to think of it, I think I might be TOO sweet. The job interview I went for, the customer service supervisor position - I didn't get it. The manager really liked me, he said my qualifications were great and I have a nice personality. BUT, he doesn't think I'll be tough enough to be a disicplinarian. He said you need to have really thick skin for this job and he thinks I'm too sweet crying.gif but that's OK, I have another job interview next week biggrin.gif I would never change who I am, that's just moi!

I didn't even think to ask about traveling with it unactivated at my interview, I think I just figured that it was all business as usual until I decided to use it to move.

As others have said on here before, the Visa is already active. So when you cross the POE, you're not actually "activating" it. I think it's safer if you hold off until the move...

Yes, Jill is correct, I asked the interviewer if I could cross the border and not use the K1 and she said no. So out of all the people to trust, I trust her since she's the one that approved me in the first place.

I also asked if I could do a land crossing with just my birth certificate and driver's license and she said, no they will know that I have a K1 on my file and ask to see my passport.

I personally would not risk it. I have read that people did that, and I'm sure it was at the discretion of the POE officer. And, I'd rather not put my fate in their hands!

Not sure if you have had your interview yet, but she offered to let me keep my passport to travel and then to send it back when I was ready to have the visa put in and then they would mail it back. I politely declined, because I didn't want to run into any delays waiting for it in the future.

Sadly, I've missed 2 girls weekends with my friends - one in Chicago and one shopping day in Buffalo, since I can't cross. And, ym poor fiance has been here 4 times in a row to visit. He's so sick of travelling and coming here, LOL.

Sucks, but time has passed pretty quickly.

That's how it was for me too, I was approved in July and didn't move until mid-November. You'll be on your way soon kicking.gif

Be prepared to possibly be turned back though... the interviewer told me I was not allowed to use my passport again to cross into the US unless I was moving. I know Sapphire asked the interviewer as well, and he reccomended she not do that.

I agree with you Poprocks, well put. Unfortunately that attitude is widespread, I have noticed. It's either "our way, or no way". Canada is alot more tolerant and multicultural.

I don't know if anyone watched this past season of the Amazing Race, but there was this team of 2 girls, Jamie and Cara. They were the most ignorant, stereotypical Americans. Obviously they were travelling in foreign countries, and she would scream and yell at people, especially cab drivers, for not speaking English. I was flabbergasted when watching, the ignorance she showed disgusted me. Unfortuntately it's people like her that give Americans a bad name outside of this country.

I think the one thing that really helps me, is that I will be going home alot.... I was home for 2 weeks in March/April, going for a week in early June, August for a bachelorette party, September for a wedding, Christmas.... and in between, my Mom and sister are coming to go wedding dress shopping!

laughing.gif Girl, that all stops when you are working 50 hours a week though with so few days off. In Canada a lot of jobs get vacation time in your first year. In the US, my first job in the private sector, I got 3 personal days off a YEAR until my 2nd year in which then I got 5 vacation days off but no personal days. That was all.

Even now I get a lot of vacation time from my state job but I can't always take it the way I want it or when I want it.

The thing is to go home as much as you can, even if it is for a few days but it does become hard when you start gaining responsibility (home, husband, pets, job, etc)

I miss Canada every day. Even if I'm not thinking directly about it, I'm missing it. My sister in law is now dating a guy from Toronto and I'm hoping it works out because my husband said that if she decided to move there, He'd want to move there to be by her. biggrin.gif

Well I do plan on having a job by August, and I'm still going to go home for those events.... I just plan on flying Friday night after work, and returning Sunday night! As for Christmas, luckily it falls on a Friday this year so I'm covered for then too!

Plus, I'm going solo most of the time so my husband can take care of the responsibilities!! Except at Xmas, he'll be joining me then.

My Dad and stepmom travel alot, so they have an older neighbor man come over twice daily to feed and play with their kitty. Also take in the mail, etc. She pays him 10 bucks per day, and he is also the emergency contact for the alarm. In fact, they are going to HI next year for 3 weeks! I'm soooo jealous

But I know if you have a dog, it needs more companionship than a kitty.... I don't blame you on the neighbor thing, you don't want any funny activity going now hile you're away. So, where ya goin!? smile.gif

Nothing too exotic, thinking of Seattle for a week. Chris' grandmother is ill and there is a great sale on Alaska right now from Hawaii, so we're thinking. Probably leaving July 3rd . . . . . not too sure yet.

I laughing.gif when you said that, because I don't think anywhere you could go will be more exotic than where you already live! Well, maybe except Fiji....
