Pickle Barrel, i've never heard of it - but that is a good name for a restaurant!

Well, called for Thai food last night - no answer - sooo we ended up having fried chicken and whatever from the store and it was very - whatever.

I'm going to cook tonight, enough of this silliness! I think pork chops, salad and - something.

It's a good restaurant! A mish mash of food items, anything from steak, chicken, smoked meat, stir fry, salads, etc. And of course, they have the BEST pickles! It's a chain in Ontario

I used to drive regularly on the 401 between Detroit and Toronto/Buffalo. One thing I will hand to my Canadian friends: passing lane discipline. People actually use the passing lane to pass in, not to set cruise control and stop the flow of traffic like they do all over America (except Colorado, which I have found to be Canadian-like in the their use of the passing lane).

ohmy.gif That's exactly what I thought! SO much like Canada.

good.gif

This thread has been educational! I feel better about driving in Colorado now.

We talk about Detroit, but what about getting lost in LA? My fiance and I were super late getting to the airport so we decided to follow the "shortcut" the GPS suggested and oh my... I have never seen anything like that in my life! There were massive groves of thuggy looking people standing along the street staring at you as you drive by. Maybe its because we were in a bright orange Mustang? Regardless I was terrified!

OMG I just thought of something when you said LA. My girlfriend and I went to LA last year on vacay, we rented a car. We got lost and ended up in the ghetto, had to stop for gas. As she's pumping fuel, this scary looking guy walked up and asked her for change, he needed bus fare as he was just let out of prison and he had 0 dollars ohmy.gif

That does sound shady. If you think of how much $$ those tolls generate every day.... they're annoying too if you don't have an EZ pass, I don't always have change or cash on me. At least in Ontario, the toll highway is optional

Amanda, since you do have experience in transportation, etc... maybe you'll know the answer to this. WHERE do all those dollars go from toll booths? They are ALL OVER the place, and isn't the $$ supposed to go to improving the roads, signage, etc? We don't pay tolls in Canada, yet our road systems seem better than the US. So where do all those toll dollars go?

I find that speeding is more acceptable in Canada... at least where I'm from. You get on the 406 and nobody is driving under 110, with traffic generally flowing at 120. And the 401? You guys are right, its crazy. Whenever Bill comes up and drives to Toronto he's always amazed with the traffic flowing at 150 (in the rare time of day when traffic is actually flowing). When he drove his American car up the speedometer wouldn't even clock in the speed because it only went up to 140.

When I drive in the US I get constant reminders to slow it down! I think its due to the larger police presence you see in a lot of states versus the lack of patrolling I find here in Southern Ontario. People don't care when they are confident they won't get caught!

Exactly.

And Jill, I know they passed that 50 kms over law last year. But to be honest with you, there isn't enough of a police presence on the 401 to make a difference. I still do 150 on t he 401 now and dont have any fear of being caught.

You do? I wouldn't want to risk it, even if there's a small chance of getting caught it does happen and I can't afford the fine nor for my car to be impounded...

The 401 is one of the craziest places to drive on because people in the fast lane are at least going 150 clicks if they can. I used to be that person but New Jersey is too full of traffic to go that fast (plus there are cops EVERYWHERE)

Florida, I have heard, isn't really that bad of a state to drive in. The tri-state area as well as Houston, Dallas and LA are notoriously the worst in the US.

But now in Ontario, they passed a new law last year.... if you are going 50KM / over the speed limit on any road in Ontario, you are automatically on a 30 day suspension, your car gets impounded, and up to a $10,000 fine. I think that's a good thing. There was an article in the Star last summer about how the Americans and other Canadians from diff provinces didn't know about it and cried the blues when their cars were impounded, it didn't matter where you were from

That's exactly what I did! I had an appointment at the bank yesterday and I had my dad added to my account so he can do all my banking for me and transfer money into my account if I ever need it. I hadn't heard of anyone doing it this way so I was wondering if there was a catch... But If it works for you it'll probably work for me!

A point to consider. The lady at the bank told me that if I wanted to have my address changed to a US one I would be charged taxes on the interest I make in my savings account. Anyone else encounter this? Its not like I make a lot of interest at all, I just found it a little weird... So I left my address as my Canadian one my parents live at.

I agree with you, it got pushed back and they kept saying June 1st. So then, make it June 1st and those without a passport should be turned away. It's not that hard to get one. Plus I still wouldn't attempt to cross without the passport, what if the border guard was in a bad mood or something, he could probably still turn you away.

CanadaBorder guards won't turn away passport-less Canadians
CTV.ca News Staff

U.S. officials said Monday they won't turn away Canadian travellers who show up at land border crossings without passports, despite new regulations that make it mandatory to have a "secure document" when crossing into the United States.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative came into effect today after more than a year-long delay, and requires Canadians crossing into the U.S. and Americans returning home to have a valid passport if they are aged 16 or older.

While travellers are being urged to obtain the correct documents as soon as possible, officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Monday they will accept identification such as a birth certificate and photo I.D. for a few weeks, if not months.

"If you cross anywhere within the United States, whether it's on the northern border or the southern border, we're applying this informed compliance phase," said Kevin Corsaroan, chief customs and border protection officer on the U.S. side of the Peace Bridge.

"We don't think it's going to go away any time soon -- we believe it's going to go on throughout the summer. We're waiting for further guidance from the department on that."

According to Corsaroan, few travellers arrived at the border crossing without passports on Monday, but officials will not turn away those who do not have one.

"We will not refuse a Canadian entry into this country if that's their only violation," he said.

Travellers turning up at the border without a secure document are being told how they can obtain one and are given an information sheet that reads: "Noncompliant. You are not in compliance with the secure document requirements that went into effect June 1, 2009, for entry into the United States."

"U.S. and Canadian citizens must present a secure travel document for entry into the United States at land and sea ports of entry."

Jessica Whitaker of London, Ont., received the warning letter after crossing the Peace Bridge with just a birth certificate and photo I.D.

The 20-year-old vowed to get a passport before her next trip to the U.S.

"I'm just going to be waiting for my passport next time I cross," she said. "I think it's a good thing to have."

The new rules contain some exceptions, including:

* Canadian citizens aged 15 years or younger only need to provide proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or citizen card.
* Canadians 18 years and younger who are travelling with a school or other group, such as a sports team, also only need to provide proof of citizenship if they have parental consent.
* Canadians can also use a valid NEXUS card, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card that are used by truckers, or an enhanced driver's license that is offered in Manitoba, British Columbia and Quebec.

CTV's Paula Todd reported from the border crossing at Niagara Falls Monday afternoon that most people arrived at the border with the right documents.

"I don't know if that's because we are incredibly well mannered as Canadians, or that this message has been out nice and loud for more than a year now," Todd said during an interview on CTV News Channel.

She said U.S. officials are keeping track of the numbers of travellers crossing the border and what kinds of identification they are carrying, which will help them determine how long they will be flexible with what documents they will accept.

Meanwhile, business and tourism officials are concerned that the new regulations will slow trade at the border and turn people off from North American travel.

New Brunswick Tourism Minister Stuart Jamieson has complained that the number of American tourists to the province has been on the decline since the new regulations were announced.

The province is now focusing on enticing travellers from Quebec, Ontario and Europe to make up for the shortfall.

Ron Moran, president of the Customs Excise Union of Canada, said the new regulations are important both for improving security at the border and for speeding up travel times.

Moran said Monday that in a post 9-11 world, gone are the days when a customs officer would lean into the car, ask if everyone is a Canadian citizen and wave you across the border.

"The reality is when you administer your points of entry in that manner, you really don't have a clue who you're letting into the country," Moran told Canada AM. "So certainly having everybody have readable documents is something that is very highly supported by the men and women who (are border guards)."

According to Moran, a uniform set of rules that everyone must follow to engage in cross-border travel will move traffic more quickly during peak periods.

"The reality is a readable document is quicker and just as importantly, it's more prudent," he said.

Passport Canada says that about 54 per cent of Canadians have a passport compared to only 30 per cent of Americans.

Travellers flying into the U.S. from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean have required a passport since 2007.

But the regulation was not applied to land crossings in order to give people more time to obtain passports.

Passport Canada said it has been overwhelmed with applications, and has been processing an average of 20,000 passports per day over the past few months.

Lol I think you made a mistake, you inferred that our government was logical Hahaha

Well, I know little of State vs Federal law here (and i'm good with that) - i'm just thinking since same sex marriage seems to be a State thing and immigration is Federal - in theory same sex immigration could be approved without the other happening.

Ideally there would be both, of course.

That's what I was thinking, the same sex marriage laws being passed are state wide, the feds don't recognize it. So even if you live in say Iowa, where same sex marriage is now legal, you cannot sponor a foreign spouse as USCIS would not recognize it.

If it's just based on what sex someone is, why not further it to say that I should have a say if my brother only marries someone I find attractive or I see is fit as a wife for him? So pathetic that these issues don't seem to ever go away.
