Unfortunately there's no real secrets.... it gets pretty boring, but you learn to deal with it and make the best of it! Even with your EAD, doesn't mean you're going to get a job right away, just gives you the green light to start looking. I have learned to cook alot since I've been here, I clean a ton, read many books per week (you didn't mention reading at all.... perhaps join your local library?) reading passes the time like nothing else.

It's hard, but you have to try and enjoy the time off while you can! It's a nice time to relax, reflect, get to know your new neighborhood, pick up some hobbies, etc. I am still enjoying the break, while looking for work. But I won't look back with any regrets, because I've immensly enjoyed the time off work that I have had! And I see this as my summer vacation smile.gif

I'm just looking ahead.

I'd like to eventually bring my mom over to the US from Canada. I see that in order to do this, I must be a USC, so I do plan on applying for citizenship when I qualify.

If me and my son become citizen's, can we also keep our Canadian citizenship, or do we have to give it up? I would like to continue use of both passports if possible?

Also, is there an age requirement for citizenship? or would my son (apprx 8 years old at that time) qualify to apply for citizenship?

Thanks smile.gif

Neither country recognizes dual citizens. BUT, what they do, is if you get US Citizenship, while in the USA, the US Government will ONLY recognize your USC status. When you go to Canada, the Canadian gov't. will ONLY recognize your Canadian citizenship status. smile.gif

D calls it "the best of both worlds". Also... did you know that b/c you're over here on a K1 and getting married, if after 3 years, you all are still married, and can prove it is a "bonafide" marriage, you can apply for citizenship after 3 years, instead of waiting for the normal 5 years?? good.gif

That's not so re: Canada. Canada DOES recognize dual citizens. The US, does not. biggrin.gif

CanadaRe-establishing Your Girlie Connections..
Ahhh!! The transition is so tough, that's for sure. Luckily I do my own manny and peddy unless it's a special occasion, so I didn't have to worry about that. I miss the salon where I used to get waxed on a monthly basis, I haven't tried waxing since I've been here crying.gif I sure miss my waxer and the cheap price too.... here a few places I checked out are like 60 or 70 bucks.... screw that!

I found a gyno and family doctor through our insurance, I also ended up going to my husband's dentist and eye doctor. Once I found Trader Joe's I was in grocery heaven, but I miss my favourite Thai restaurant (Spring Rolls!)

As for friends, well a few of Glen's friends call me sometimes and I hang out with them, went out with one girl last night in fact smile.gif It was nice, we're still "getting to know" one another so it's not like gossip back and forth, but it was fun.... And of course, I have a few VJ friends now too which is wonderful! smile.gif

But listen, if you want to meet up soon for coffee or lunch, I am so in! Maybe we can meet in downtown Philly since that's halfway, when you are settled in your new crib or whatever. We can chat about home and how we are foreigners together!

*side note: I already feel myself drifting away from some of my closest friends back home.... it's inevitable I suppose, yet so sad! The effort for them to keep in touch just isn't there.... some resentment I guess for me leaving.... oh well c'est la vie!

Jill, if you'd like a little visual reminder of Bronte, take a look at this video. (Hey! I can see my brother's house! laughing.gif )

My Mum and I went for a walk on the pier the other day and decided to visit the model suite in The Shores ..... the new condo development where Bill Hill's used to be. It is absolutely stunning. You should go and visit it the next time you're in town. Well, my Mum is sold on the place but my Dad absolutely refuses to move. Which makes me really apprehensive because he is getting old and I'm worried that one of these days he is going to kill himself with the upkeep of their house..... because he still thinks he can do things (like cutting the grass and shovelling the driveway). He refused to let me cut the grass while I was there so I had to watch him take frequent rests to catch his breath, plus I saw him hold his chest in pain.... he has angina. Gawd. It was terrible. I'll kill him if he dies cutting the grass! laughing.gif I've made arrangements for someone else to come and do it but I'll bet you anything he'll still try. mad.gif

Anyway.... I didn't mean to tell you all that! I just wanted to show you the video of Bronte. laughing.gif blush.gif

Oh thanks! *Memories!* I can see my old apt building on Marine Drive! You know what they neglect to mention though, the disgusting black sludge that piles up every spring/summer and stinks up to high heaven of dead fish! They really need to dredge the harbour, it's so nasty.

I'll be in Oakville next week, so I'll probably take a look at the Shores! I miss Bill Hill's crying.gif They had the best ice cream!

I lived there from 1983-2002. It's where my kids grew up. Maybe they knew Scooter! laughing.gif Did she know the Whites who lived on the corner? (That's not me, BTW. laughing.gif ) Oh no, wait. That's before their time, I think. I grew up in the area so I actually lived there for far longer than that. 1983-2002 is when I owned my own home there. Then I moved to Burlington.

Wow, what a small world! Their names were Ernie, Dorothy and Scooter. My Gran had pitch black curly hair, it never turned grey. They lived across the street from this Danish couple who had a real life train set in their backyard, that we could go on rides on. It was so cool. Every time I drive by now, there are so many monster houses on the street! I was sad to see their little home knocked down

It is insane how fast things grow. I would never want to live in those houses in Vaughn that you see from the 400, they're all squished together. I bet they cost a pretty penny too.

Oh yeah.... I call those Monopoly houses!! They look like the little toy houses. There is no space between those homes at all.

Every time I come back to Ontario things are different. I have been lost numerous times because entire roads have been moved to another location and small cities have sprung up in farmland. I went for a walk around the old neighbourhood the other day and named off each of my friends as I walked by their former homes. In a lot of cases those homes are gone, entirely, as the existing ones were torn down to be replaced by mega estates due to the large lot sizes. Change makes me sad and melancholy, but that's what life is about.

So true! My Grandparents had this cute little bungalow on Woodhaven Park Road, right off Lakeshore in Bronte. The last time I drove by, it had been torn down and this ginormous ugly mansion was being built! They had so much land.

CanadaBilly Mays Dies
Looks like the plane incident was simply coincidence:

Pitchman extraordinaire Billy Mays died from a pulmonary embolism, according to the coroner in Tampa, Fla., who announced preliminary autopsy results at a press conference Monday. Evidence of heart disease was also found.

According to Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Vernard Adams, Mays "had an enlarged heart, a thickening of the wall of the ventricle which takes blood to the heart." Final results of the autopsy and cause of death will not be known for several weeks.

I went through North Portal, ND and I know that they require that. Canada1st time crossing border with new Visa
QUOTE (SomberCat @ Jun 29 2009, 11:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We came up with the same issue over the weekend. My husband will be moving at the end of August, but a few days before the move, we were planning on him coming down to pick me up. This way I can ride back up with him (leave my vehicle in the US) and drive his car back down on moving day (he'll be driving the moving van). Over the weekend, he asked me how that would work since he would have to activate his visa on the trip down to pick me up. I was clueless.

He'll be somewhat in a hurry on the day he drives down to pick me up and it would be great if he didn't have to go through the whole process at that time. However, if it would be okay for him to get the process done that day, it would surely save time on moving day as there will be three of us "caravaning" with lots of items.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this one. If you don't activate the visa, then how would you get through the border since your passport will obviously be in a package that you're not supposed to open? If you do activate the visa, do they give you any issues on moving day?

Your passport isn't part of the "do not open" package. The passport comes to you seperately from that envelope.

A question that came to mind is: What is cheating?

I know the definition may be different depending on whom you talk to. Is having an emotional connection to someone other than your S/O cheating? Is hanging out with someone of the opposite sex cheating? Or is it just when you have sex with someone other than your S/O, cheating?

NOT saying anyone on here is "cheating" (well, I don't know any of you THAT much....), but I'm curious to know what people's definitions are.

If hanging out with someone of the opposite sex is cheating, then damn I'm a huge cheater laughing.gif I have alot of male friends, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with having friends of the opposite sex. Is cardio 20-30 min 3x's a week and strength training 40 min 2x's a week not enough to really change your body?

I guess it depends what you are eating.... the rule of thumb is that you must burn more calories than you intake.... So if you are actually trying to lose weight, not just maintain you would probably have to do more cardio than that. well I got up early and ran 3 miles on the treadmill and did some weights......right now I am highly motivated......have you any suggestions for when you are not feeling that motivated...just want to be prepared just in case....but so far, so good!!!!!! I kicked all the junk food out of the house.......I know I am doomed if it is here. Keep the inspiration coming...it helps good.gif

Good for you! My motivation for not over-eating/snacking is pasting a magazine picture of a bikini model (with her head cut off, just her body) on the fridge and pantry. LOL so I look at that and I'll like hell no, I'm not eating those chips!! laughing.gif
