QUOTE (July09Bride @ Jun 4 2009, 10:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I can tell you, that when I lived in the southwest, I NEVER had to worry about my skin. Never had problems and I didn't use anything... just a nice rub down each night. THEN... omg... I move to the humidity capital of the world in the Great Lakes Area and I have skin problems galore.

Best suggestion as someone who comes from an arid area... go light. Something without lots of heavy gucky stuff. Stay light. That's my best recommendation. I actually found that although I tried to stay "light" here in the GL area, I actually had to go "heavy" in order for my skin to stop freaking out.

Just a suggestion..... I WISH I was moving back in the next couple of months, like you are. Enjoy!

laughing.gif I'm sorry, that sounds funny. "A nice rub down each night" I like that too blush.gif laughing.gif

laughing.gif Shout it out!! I'm glad to hear it worked for you, Sapphire. I considered Accutane, but my doctor didn't think my skin was bad enough. To me, it was hell but everyone around me said it was just a few pimples, barely noticeable. Also my family was concerned about all the bad things they heard about it, like nosebleeds, dry mouth, dry skin, the pregnancy tests you have to take (not sure if that's true?) but I got scared off it. Also I heard it can cause serious depression and suicidal tendencies. So I went on Tetracycline instead, it did work well for me. It's an antibiotic though and I didn't want to be on it forever, so I just stopped it one day.

I've always had skin issues myself... I've used Spectro Jel in the morning and Proactiv at night for years.... I bought a supply of Spectro at Costco before I moved, so still have a ton of it. I am sick of using Proactiv, but was worried about switching. I love their moisturizer, as it's oil free and won't clog my pores. I just bought Murad face cleaner at Sephora, but I haven't tried it yet. I read tons of good things about Murad skin care line, so I wanted to try it out. Plus I can buy it in the store and don't have to worry about ordering anything.

My brother has the worst acne ever and he uses Murad products and his skin is pretty much clear now. It has worked wonders for him. Good suggestion.

Oh really, good to know! I'll start the regime when I get back to PHL. I was on Tetracycline for the longest time, I had bad hormonal breakouts. I stopped it when I moved, I didn't want to take drugs anymore. I hate having skin issues, it sucks so bad. It affects how you feel and I just want beautiful, clear smooth skin!

QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Jun 4 2009, 06:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I now see that I can buy some Vichy stuff online, but they don't have everything I use. Checking ebay or amazon might be a good idea. I don't really have an acne problem now, my breakouts are extremely rare, but I've come to assume that I don't break out because of the Vichy line I use. Its quite possible that I've just grown out of the acne issues, but I've been scared to test the theory and change products. I don't really mind spending a good dollar on a nice product that works, but since I won't be working I'll have to rely on my dearest fiance to finance it... I'm not so sure he'd be too happy about dishing out $90 every month.

I think I'll buy that book you recommended La Souris, It will probably help me with a direction! I think I'll look into that Tangerine stuff too, I'd love something as natural as possible and it doesn't seem to expensive. I've thought about proactive, but I've heard its a little pricey and I've always just assumed it was something only people with really bad acne need. Does it have other benefits? Like taking care of uneven skin tones or dry patches?

I was the same way.... My skin was good for years, so I figured I grew out of it. I stopped Proactiv, and it went right back to how it was. So I started to use it again. I don't think I'll ever grow out of it, I'm 29 crying.gif I think it'll always be an issue for me.

I don't think Proactiv would help with dry patches, it actually made me a bit more dry that's why I can only use it at night, not twice per day.

Really!? You'd think the amount of time to train a BG would take the whole summer. I can't believe that!

I actually applied for a position like this when I was an undergrad. I declined because I did not want the commute. Blaming the crappiness on the border guard on being a student really isn't fair, its kinda derrogatory to students. A lot of people who get in a position of power become total jerks - I had one at the Embassy.

It's nothing against students; it's that students only work for a few months in the summer so it doesn't seem like enough rigourous training would go into hiring a student. After all, these people are protecting our borders so I would hope the BG protecting Canada has had adequate proper training

If you wanted to mail your xray that is fine. You definitely won't require it at the POE. Your yellow sealed envelope has your immigration file in it, including your medical report. Part of the medical report is the x-ray report. Since immigration officers are not medically trained to review xrays they take the radiologists report's conclusions. Your x-ray is a nice souvenir that you can use as a baseline for your annual medical when you get a family doctor here in the US. You won't need it to enter the country.

Good luck at your POE.

Good to know, thanks so much Kathryn41.

hey all.

Everything went well for me at secondary inspection at Pearson. A customs officer took my folder that I was given before secondary inspection, I was told to take a seat, and I waited about an hour and a half (it was really busy there this morning). Then when my name was finally called the customs officer came over to me, asked me for my package, I gave it to him, asked me when I was getting married, I told him hopefully the 18 (this weekend) he said okay and that he was going to process my package and told me to take a seat and he would come back out to get me. He had also said when he came back that he would look through my bags, and then I would be on my way. He came back out, I put my bags up for him, he asked me standard questions that they normally ask at customs goods, alcohol, funds, etc...searched through my bags, had me pack them back up. He then gave me back the sheet of paper that was attached outside of my brown envelope, and my passport. Then he told me my 90 day dead line, and showed me the stamp and I-94. I thanked him, and he showed me where to exit. I didnt get printed, or my picture done. Im just really happy that it all went well. Now Im in Colorado awaiting my connecting flight to my final destination. Thank you all for your help and support.

Glad to hear it went so well!

That doesnt seem so bad, so you go through the customs first? then the other inspection? like when you get called to the booth or counter I would let the person know that I want to activate my K1 visa, and then they would send me to the other place?or is there a whole separate line up to go through?Im so happy, anxious, and nervous at the same time that im trying to prepare myself smile.gif

Toronto Pearson is a pre-clearance centre. So you leave the check-in area and go directly through Customs. Don't forget to fill out the I-94 form outside the Customs area first, as Sapphire says. When you get to the CBP Officer, tell them you are entering on a K-1 visa. They will direct you to the secondary inspection area, and that is where the processing will occur. There is no separate line.

Great! Thank you guys for all of your help! I booked my one way ticket this morning to leave on Tuesday. Im so anxious and Happy that things are finally falling into place. If I have more questions between now and then I will likely be posting them here:)

Good luck!!

Ok I have two questions about customhouse. I think someone needs to start charging commission on the Canada forum! LOL! Anyways, I want to set up an account with customhouse as I am moving to the US in mid-Sept.
1. Being that I already have a US bank account that is active from when I lived in the US, can I set up an account with them before I move?

2. Does customhouse do transfers from your Canadian bank account to American bank account? AND your transfers from American bank account back to your Canadian bank account. I would definitely need them for BOTH and would make my life so much simpler.

Yes to both questions - I set up my CH account well before I moved, and you can transfer both ways.

It makes my life simpler that's for sure!

I'm going to sign up before I leave, and use Tim's account for now. I assume it would be easy to change later if I needed too?

What kind of I.D and verification to they need? I hope I don't have to scan anything to send them, as my scanner/printer broke a while back, and I don't want to buy a new one! The closure of the sale of my house happens the day before I move, so I will want to transfer some money to help pay for wedding/honeymoon/AOS...

I think you need at least 2 photo IDs... I scanned/e-mailed my passport bio page and DL... it wasn't clear enough and they asked me for a better copy, pretty strict that they need to see your photo clearly

CanadaLife on the 'Other Side'
The beggining is definitely hard Pop! I remember the first night here, after we unpacked the truck I took a nice long shower. I burst into tears in the shower, like WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST DO!? But I have settled in so well to my new home... I know it helped that everything went smoothly for me (DL, SSN, AOS, getting a new CC, plates, etc). it made it easier. It also helped that in the first 2 months, Mom, Dad, and Sister came to visit me. I also have great in-laws that showed me around alot. I have been home twice and am going home next month too.

It's wierd, but I don't get homesick too often. I talk to my family every single day, and before I moved I felt I was drifting from some friends anyway. I guess it helps that my hubby is amazing and we are so happy, it makes everything worth it. I am happy here, and I couldn't imagine moving back at this point in time. Everything is coming together nicely. In 6 months to a year, you will be much more settled. Keep in mind, living out of hotels for months would drive anyone nuts! Once you are in your new home, the 3 of you things will be so much better heart.gif

Oh and I really expected it to be worse here.... I guess I heard so many homesick horror stories I thought I'd be sobbing night and day.... but it wasn't like that at all!

I find it cute that there is a "bail bonds" area of town (perhaps that is normal in the U.S. and I just haven't happened upon it in any of the other cities I've been to?) It also made me giggle when my husband and I ordered sandwiches at some BBQ place, and there was a flyer for the "World's Largest Gun Show" attached to the receipt. It's a VERY different atmosphere than Ottawa. I assume I'll have a hard time adjusting... "why do you all... I'm sorry... "y'all" like guns so much?" "Why don't people wear helmets while riding motorcycles?" "Why do they feel the need to have a billboard for 'Tulsa's #1 Rated Heart Surgery?' How does that even make sense?" "Why did I just get yelled at for accidentally giving the lady a Canadian quarter while purchasing this beverage?" And most importantly... "WHERE THE HELL ARE THE SIDEWALKS?!?"

A few added costs to consider - cancelling a cell phone contract (i still had a contract).

Oh yeah - I had to pay out my contract with Telus.

At least most of the costs are sort of spread out. Like between my interview and move was 4 months, so I had time to save for the truck rental. Then of course, a few years down the road you have to pay more money to remove conditions. It never really ends!
