Does anybody else remember when full service gas stations were the norm? You would drive into the gas station and don't you dare touch those pumps! The uniformed guy would come out and wash your windows and check your oil while the gas was pumping. Then he would give you points towards your free dishes or free Tide with a free towel inside or whatever. lol

Or you would get a tiger tail for your bike for putting a tiger in your tank at Esso!

There's still one of those in good ol' Bronte! At the corner of Bronte Rd. and Lakeshore! A full serve, they check your oil, wash your windows, and the gas is usually cheaper at that! Called Pioneer, you don't find them around much anymore

Nev I'm surprised you were originally denied for Cap 1! They sent me the CC, I didn't even apply (not sure how they found my name) and I even told them I have no income and I'm a "homemaker" they still approved me! It was wierd.

Yea I don't know.

I never had a credit card in Canada though. Never had the need for one, yes I understand why you should have one, but I just didn't have one.

So even if they looked back on a credit history I wouldn't have anything to show.

I am thinking thats the main reason they denied me. Plus I had about 5 denials for other cards I had applied for this past year and I know that shows up.

I don't want a card... but I guess if you want to live the "american nightmare" you just have to conform. tongue.gif

laughing.gif And if you guys do decide to buy a home, it will be good to have some credit history under your belt. I've just been using it here and there, then paying it off in full right when I get the bill.

Hope it works out for you Huggles... I sort of went through the same thing before I moved here. I wanted this really nice apartment, we saw it and I fell in love with the complex. It had an outdoor pool, tennis courts, gym, 18 hole golf course, 2 bed 2 bath, fireplace. Absolutely amazing, my heart was set on it. The apartment Glen lived in was nice, but only 1 bathroom and it's a duplex not a complex so no amenities. Anyway, the difference in rent was over $400 a month. When we set out our budget, we realized truthfully wouldn't be able to afford the place I wanted without a second income and without scraping to get by. I had to accept that the better place would come later, so I moved into Glen's apartment where he was already living. The rent is really reasonable and we can afford it no problem on his income, the other place not so much. We made the right decision as I'm not working yet and we would probably be struggling if we moved into the other place. It was what I WANTED but I know that will come later! Just something to think about, as it may make sense to save money by living with the in-laws and you could always move to the great place 6-9 months later - I'm sure there will be vacancies! (just playing devil's advocate here) smile.gif I totally know how you feel about wanting the great place with your sweetie biggrin.gif

Even though we decided to stay in my in laws house for a while my fiance and I went looking at a couple apartments today... I'm not really sure why, we were driving around and did it on a whim. The bad thing is that I fell in love with a gorgeous open concept apartment in a brand new complex and its pretty expensive and probably overpriced for the area... But I can't get it out of my mind! It has a huge gym, a gorgeous pool area, they offer shuttle services to public transit, there is a lovely balcony with a view towards the mountains, its so close to my fiances work he could just walk if he wanted to, meaning I could have the car and we wouldn't need to get a second one, and they are just finishing building everything, meaning we'd have a place nobody else has ever lived in... We should wait and save money but I'm having a hard time letting it go.

Wow, sounds so nice! Is your fiance considering it, does he love it as well? I'd love to live in a place no one has been in before! Think of that brand new tub....

The thing that ticks me right off is NO ONE at the complex follows the rules. It also states no dogs over 30 lbs. There are MANY dogs here that are pitbulls, german shepards, that weigh over 30 lbs. Many people have dogs in both duplexes. If no one else follows the rules why should I mad.gif

ADVICE NEEDED

Some of you will remember a few months back, we wanted to get a doggie so bad but we were told by our landlord not allowed due to a stupid rule that only 1 dog is allowed per dulpex and the neighbor downstairs has a dog.

Anyway, a friend at my husband's work found this 1 year old poodle (important because I cannot have a dog that sheds) they took him to the humane society, tried to find it's owner. It has no microchip, no missing dogs were reported that matches this description. The HS wouldn't take the dog in, as they are overwhelmed with dogs and unforunately putting some to sleep.

She wants us to take the little guy as he is so cute and sweet and needs a loving home. I want to SO bad but I'm scared we'll get caught, it's in our lease no dogs I don't want to be evicted over a dog. My husband says if she finds out we just say we're dogsitting but you can only do that for so long! Our lease isn't up until Nov. 1.

I am not a rebel and don't want to stray against the rules LOL.

What would YOU do?!

OK this is kinda wierd, but... sometimes I have trouble understanding people when they speak here. And they are speaking English. I know Philly-ians have a strong accent, so that doesn't help at all. Sometimes it sounds like they are mumbling and I didn't catch a word they said. For example the word water, instead of prounouncing it like water it sounds like warrr. Towel sounds like tal. It's so frustrating sometimes to attempt a conversation with people when I don't understand what they are saying. Last night we were at a friend's BBQ and one of the girls said to me "Is there a coldstone near you" Meaning coldstone creamery. I thought she said "Is there a cold sore on you?" And I was like no, why are you asking me if I have coldsores, wierdo. It's so odd. I wish they would enunciate their words.

I am usually fine, I try to eat regularly but it's when I am in the car on long drives that I tend to forget. sad.gif

That's not something to be embarrassed about. There are already so many things that can go wrong on long car trips. sad.gif

Perhaps schedule with Mike, call in times where you pull over and check-in. Have a quick snack at that time too? I dunno, its so easy to put on the cruise control for hours and never really remember how long since you last ate or even stretched your legs for a few minutes.

Thats exactly what it is, I forget on road trips. I am sure I'll be fine, we're going out to buy a blue tooth today and my mom and Mike will be calling me a lot I'm sure.

I just hear about people doing the drive by themselves and saying its not big deal and I feel stupid because I have never done it alone. I know I can make it, I have driven the entire way before but I have always had someone in the car with me which helps incase my sugar gets low and we usually stop 3 times.

The drive back, I'll have Ethan which makes me even more nervous but again, I'll have to stop. It's hard because you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible.

Don't feel stupid! I know what you mean that you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible, but take your time! I always drive by myself, have actually never done the trip with anyone and I usually feel rushed. Even moving here, I was in my car alone. Just take your time, you're going to get there! I will never do that drive in the winter

This afternoon I decided to visit the Georgia Archives which are nearby. They are actually the Southeastern Regional Archives of the National Archives. It was my first time there. They had a new exhibit that just opened last month called 'Documented Rights' about rights issues as presented through documents - from slavery issues, through immigration and citizenship issues through women's rights and civil rights, etc. The exhibit is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed touring it. While I was there there was a man taking photographs (without flash) and since the archive staff didn't object I presumed he had permission.

So, this evening I was reading the Atlanta Journal Constitution online and see an article about this new exhibit. When I clicked on it, there is a photograph - and quess what! I am in the background! Yep - the fellow taking photographs must have been the reporter/photographer from the paper.

Anyway, here is the link to the article. You can click on the photograph to see it enlarged - I'm the blonde in the background behind the child:
