The new mammography guidelines in the US. #######!!! Women 40-49 should not be getting annual mammograms unless they're at risk??? Women 50-74 every 2 years?!?!?!

What the hell are these doctors thinking?

That is so awful, I heard about that this morning. How could they do that, when so many women catch breast cancer early through mammograms and not self exams?

My vent today

I got turned down (again) for a job. I had passed the first 3 stages of their hiring process but got the email "they would not move forward". I was pissed and sad about their stupid personality test online. I was supposed to be able to review my answers and next thing you know it says "thank you for submitting". I'll give some reviews!!!!! Geez.
So i was mad, sad and pissed and angry etc... about that and the city here where there is no job and I cant find a job blablabla (we're in michigan AND not in a big city) and hubby decided to take me on a nice date to the restaurant we had our rehearsal dinner. It was very nice and the food was delicious.

He is such a sweetheart heart.gif

Awww hang in there Laure.... I know how hard it is, trust me!! It took me almost 7 months to find a job... went through lots of interviews, tests, rejection letters, no call backs, etc.... I know how you feel! I was so grumpy and vented alot to the hubby every day, poor guy.... I cried a few times too! It's hard enough as it is in these times to find a job, and I think even harder for immigrants. It may take awhile, just be patient and hang in there!!

I never thought that something as simple as: going home for Christmas - could be such an issue but this year it is.

My husband and I agreed on going up on December 23rd and returning on the 27th.

Then yesterday he said: "Well we have to come back on the 26th because my family christmas party is on the 27th"

Okay so can we leave to go up perhaps on the 22nd then? I mean going up for Christmas eve and Christmas day just seems so 'eat and run' to me.

No, apparently his boss asked that no one take that time off, because he's given everyone the week after off and if he takes that time off he will have to work the next week in the office alone. This coming from a guy who never uses his full four weeks of vacation in his year. Never. He probably has about 3 weeks left.

And yes I have tried to tell him that he can just stay here but he insists on spending it together, and to be honest I believe he only wants to spend it together because he said: "Do you know how bad that will look to my family if we don't?"

Ugh. Otherwise he'd be fine with going home alone for Christmas, but I have a feeling his family will have choice words about it. Just like they had choice words about me going to Canada alone in August.

And then I am told I am hurting his family because he's spent two Christmas holidays in Canada now.

Really? Should we talk about which family is hurting? The one that lives 30 minutes away or the one that lives 11 hours away???

Vent over.

smile.gif Ahh I feel a little better already.

Oh jeez, I hate family drama over the holidays. It seems to be inevitable sometimes. Hey, I'm going home the 23 to the 27 too, maybe I'll see you on the highway laughing.gif We're leaving 23 on the evening, so gonna stay overnight somewhere in Syracuse then continue the ride 24th morning.

Yup, my old company was the same. No way could I post on VJ, read the news, etc. Even if there is downtime, there is always something to do at work, work-related and they didn't want their staff "wasting" time on the internet when they are paying you to be at work. Anyone know what would happen if you do nothing and leave your Canadian plates on your car?

Would the boarder give you issues if your still using your Canadian passport? and if you get pulled over and have a Canadian DL, how would they know?

I a so upset, I just got the car, and the loan is HUGE to trans into a Line of Credit... I only did it cause it was 0% finance....

I am so mad at the dealer, they said there would be no issues with the trans to the US and that my extended warranty would still be honoured even if I moved to the US!!!!!

Do you all know if it is common practice for all manufacturers and finance co's to call on the loan or just some....

so upset sad.gif

You need to contact Volvo for clarification, before making any assumptions. Don't go by what people here say, it's different for everyone and you need to get your own situation clarified. If Volvo told you that, maybe it's right. However you can't drive around here with ON plates forever, how will you be insured?

CanadaYet another car import question (well two)
You would contact Volvo head office, dealerships don't generally deal with this sort of stuff. I have a Mazda and I had to go to Mazda head office in California.

You don't need to apply for AOS first to obtain SSN.... I went about 2 weeks after marriage, with my marriage cert, passport, I-94 and you have to fill out a form online too. There are LOTS of posts/threads here on VJ about obtaining SSN, it is one of the most frequently asked questions so you'll find the answers on here. The AOS application asks for SSN # and you just put NONE. Most people advise to go to obtain your SSN about 2-3 weeks after arrival, so you're "in the system".

You can use your ON license in PA for up to 90 days after you move here.

Yes it is alot to deal with, your best bet is just take one step at a time. If you try and do it all at once you'll feel overwhelmed, this whole process from immigration to planning/organizing a huge move is stressful. One thing at a time you'll be OK!!

Poprocks, PA was so easy for me. From getting my SSN, to changing my ON license to PA, to getting a PA plate. I had the letter from the manufacturer, had to provide that with my original ON registration and handed it in. In turn I got PA plate which cost about $60 or so, and another $50 for PA title/registration sticker. I was not charged any duties. PA license I got for 5 years and only cost $28!! Are you moving to Philly? Even getting a marriage cert in PA is easy, you get it back the same day! You don't need to wait like some states.

Forgot to mention, you do have to do an emissions test like in ON, but if your car is fairly new it should be fine. Then you get stickers to show you passed.

Letter from manufacturer? Like what type of letter? Also, was it easy to get a license? No test right? lol! I hope not... not after 20 years lol!

I just bought the car from Volvo, I have the bill of sale.... it is a 2009, and I made sure my extended warranty is good even in the US...

Can you still maintain a Canadian finance living in the US? I'm sure Volvo doesn't care as long as I keep making payments?

I'm moving just outside of Philly close to DE...

Thanks smile.gif

It's called a compliance letter, and you MUST have this in order to import your vehicle to the USA. Since your car is near new it surely meets all the US requirements. Some companies charge for the letter, I did not get charged. You should check with Volvo early to get your letter, it could take weeks to a month or so.

It's very easy to get a license, no test needed. All they did was take my pic for the new one and punch a hole in my ON one. Of course you need all the Visa paperwork, I-94, etc. You need an SSN though so you should get the SSN ASAP after arrival. It's also difficult to get a bank account without an SSN (even joint) so that should be priority. You don't need an SSN however to obtain a marriage license in PA which is good.

About the finance part, I don't know. I paid off my auto loan through RBC a few months before moving, so when I went to register my car here I advised them there was no lien on it.

Sorry, I only had a few minutes when I gave you that link the other day.... I guess I should have mentioned that I brought my car to the US and registered it here without a problem.

Anyway, it definitely sounds like you are getting huge misinformation. Just take the car to any POE. It doesn't have to be the one closest to you. That's so ridiculous it's laughable. I mean, good Lord. My POE was over a thousand miles from where I live. LOL. You must have been talking to a newbie. You will need the registration and sales receipt. I had actually left the sales receipt in the car and offered to get it for them but they said not to bother. They will ask you for the value of the vehicle. Keep it low because your State may tax you upon registration, so the value is important. My State used the Kelley Blue Book value, but they did give me the option of writing them a letter of explanation if I disagreed with that amount. One big thing to remember when you register the title at the tag office..... make sure the person who looks after imported cars enters the mileage in kilometers and not miles. I had a heck of a time with that one.

Hope you have better luck at the next POE. good.gif

When I registered my car at the tag place, I explained the car was in KMs but they did the conversion of how many KMs I had into miles, so I had like 120,000 KMs and they said I had 74,000 miles or something it was confusing. I hope it doesn't end up being a problem or anything.

The insurance thing is so weird. Phil just called USAA and added me and my car to his policy. They asked him for the numberon my I-94 for some reason but that was the only unusual thing. I got the insurance policy information in the mail yesterday and now I should get off my butt and go reregister the car.

So far, I love USAA. Much of Phil's family are officers in the marines to we're lucky enough to be able to use them.

~ Catherine

I have heard USAA is awesome!! But we aren't eligible to use them. Such a bummer! I might just try calling Allstate again and not making such a big deal about asking questions on the Canadian car thing. Just try adding the car to our policy. Then I am double insured for a while, since in order to cancel your ICBC policy you have to return your plates. In person. But I can't insure the car in the US without plates. And I can't get US plates until the car is insured in the US. Man! But maybe I'll ask around a bit and see if there is any way to get USAA. My brother in law is ex-military and he has it...

Geico insured me here on my Ontario plates, they didn't care about the plates! As soon as I had my Geico proof of insurance I was able to get my PA plates.

The events planner.

She is dense. This is the one who talks with the fake accent.

A member came in this morning and asked if the library was being used and I said no. So he went in and started doing some work. Then he got up and said he was going for lunch and said he would return.

The events planner has an appointment and says she'll be in the library and I told her about the member using it.

She asked if he booked it. I said technically no but he is using it right now and he will return. She looks at me and with the most snooty tone she says: "Tell him its booked" and her clients and her start laughing and walk in. Don't laugh at me as if I am a moron. I probably understand her job more than she herself understands it. I used to do exactly what she does and I would never do what she just did.

Members come first. She could take her appointment with the non-members anywhere else in the building. Members have access and are allowed to use any room they want as long as its not booked. Well the room wasn't booked so the member walked in and was using it.

All of his stuff is in there too. Classy move. Now you'll look like a moron when the member comes back in and is upset that you (an employee) are sitting there amongst his stuff with a couple of non-members.

There are many other places to hold a meeting.

A fake accent? What accent is she using? Is she actually trying to pretend that she's originally from another country?

Sorry, but that is an irrational peeve of mine. It irritates me to no end when I hear people faking an accent. "Ohh, I must have picked it up whilst traveling in England last month". Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow are the worst perpetrators.

I think that's different.... they both live or lived there in the past for years. Probably after a few years you could pick up an accent. Yes it's dumb to fake an accent but in their case, living there it's possible I think.

Who designs the things and who thinks that anyone really wants to use the facilities in 'public' - with the gaps around the doors - that look more like horse stalls - and big gaps all over the place.

I mean in your bathroom at home you have a door that fits and there is a sense of privacy - for some reason someone decided if you were out with a bunch of strangers it would be a grand free for all with no privacy.

Yeah some fancier places have a full door that goes from top to bottom. But I always wonder, if I got locked in I wouldn't be able to crawl out the bottom laughing.gif

I would just do the same each time you travel, until it's time to get a new one. It seems pointless to pay for a new passport, just for a name change when you just got a new one recently!

Sorry to butt in here, as I am not doing ROC for quite some time. But my question is, is it too early to start gathering evidence? Are any of you sending in proof from 2 years ago, or is it more recent proof? I am wondering if I should start a folder now and start putting stuff in, so in 2 years I'm not running around going crazy

In PA, you don't need witnesses, we had no one with us. We got married in a JOP's living room, and he snapped a few pics of us at my request

oh Manolos. Good choice! I'm guessing he took her shopping and she picked them out... If not, I'm very impressed.

She actually kept eyeing the shoes online and was indecisive about buying them or not. So he went ahead and bought them and surprised her with them for her birthday. I think she's marrying the right guy. lol

He's a total keeper laughing.gif

The shoes are Manolo Blahniks. I actually don't know what Louboutins are. lol blush.gif I just found them on that site. I wanted to get a pic of the bottom of the dress with the shoes peeking out but my Mum's camera battery was dead. Hopefully, we can do it the next time she's here. I tried them on but I fell off of them. laughing.gif
