So I'm going to look at this place today, I think it may be the one! It looks great and I've heard good reviews from a friend, so I'm hoping for the best: http://www.celebrationsweddings.com/

What? Stamp prices are going up?! I didn't hear about this! I was just going to take the pile of invites to the post office and ask them what I need... that's my usual system. Its better then educating myself laughing.gif Why do you think we should go to multiple post offices? To get the best rate or to insure we have the right postage? Gah, I don't want to worry about any of that, I don't care if they want to charge me $200 tongue.gif (OK maybe that's a little steep...) I'm already trying to figure out the return envelope stuff. I'm sending them out up here, but the return address is Bill's house in Colorado, and all the response cards are going to Colorado, so I need him to send me American stamps to put on the response cards that are going from the US to the US, but then I need other stamps to put on the cards that are going from Canada-US. Then I need to get regular Canadian stamps to send the actual invites from Canada-Canada, and different ones to send them from Canada-USA... blink.gif

Marilyn I think the blue shirt idea is cute! I'm finding that different shades of blue are hard to match, you're so right. We are using an aqua blue but there are so many variations... Its "pool" from David's bridal, which is similar to Tiffany blue, and similar to turquoise, but different at the same time! Its getting a little frustrating, I think I'm just going to give up and rock different shades too.

Yep stamp prices go up in the US May 11th! Maybe ask your fiancee to get "forever" stamps, they're like the "P" stamps in Canada, so even when the price goes up it won't affect the stamps you already bought.

The formal wedding is less than three weeks away and I need a little advice. We are having high tea for our reception so the menu features finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, sugar-free pastries, cake and fruit. The only issue is that our best man is vegan. I don't trust a Bermudian caterer to properly understand what veganism is so I've decided to organize Sean's meal myself. Does anyone have any ideas for good vegan finger foods? Any ideas for some easy vegan meals for while Sean is Dad's houseguest would be welcome also.

~ Catherine

Hi Catherine,

I can try and help you out a bit, since I'm vegetarian.... not vegan but I know lots about meat and dairy free foods!

Tofu kebabs (Vegan)

Ingredients:

* Marinated, baked, or Buffalo Tofu (homemade or purchased in the store)
* Toothpicks or similar-sized sticks

Directions:

1. Marinate and bake firm tofu (or simply bake pre-marinated tofu) in a gooey sauce until heated through and bubbly
2. Skewer on small wooden sticks or toothpicks with lightly-roasted vegetables like mushrooms, chopped bell peppers or red onions.

4. Pigs-in-a-Blanket (Vegan)

Believe it or not, some of the most popular brands of croissant-type refrigerated crescent roll dough are vegan. Buy the jumbo-sized rolls, if available.

Ingredients:

* 1 can/package vegan refrigerated crescent roll dough
* 3-4 veggie dogs, depending on size

5. Mini Samosas or Spring Rolls (Vegan)

Think the frozen food store is out-of-bounds for vegetarians? There are meatless appetizers to be found. Samosas almost always come with vegetarian fillings, and their bite-sized brethren are no exception. Curried potato and pea pastries make for a filling, savory snack and are easy to prepare in the oven.

Spring rolls are generally vegan as well, but be sure not to confuse them with egg rolls, which usually contain pork. Serve with soy sauce or vegan plum sauce to dip.

Mini samosas and spring rolls are also available in the frozen foods section of the grocery store.

This link has a great recipe for vegan cabbage rolls:

http://www.recipezaa...ge-Rolls-307958

Stuffed (cooked) mushrooms! You can stuff 'em with slightly-ground pine nuts, herbs, and bread crumbs moistened with vegetable broth.

As a main dish, stuffed peppers are a great option.... rice and veggies cooked inside a hollowed out pepper.... Tofu and vegetables are good.... stir fried over rice and noodles, as long as oyster sauce isn't used.

Yay we finally booked our venue and photographer.

It's pretty much exactly what I wanted... we went a bit over budget, but not by much and it is SO worth it!!!

Now after I move we can move on to the fun stuff like save the dates, invites and flowers! The venue has 30ft ceilings, so now I'm thinking I'll do tall centre pieces!

My colours are Navy & Yellow, but I think I'm going to make my flowers a mix and my bridesmaids all yellow.

Woohoo, that's great! At least you have the most important detail out of the way.

YAY biggrin.gif so I took your advice and spoke to 2 of my BM, they were really happy I asked and said that they'd be thrilled to stand up with me, even if it meant buying their own dress! We agreed it's best if I just pick a colour and they get what they want, something they can hopefully wear again one day. I was thinking of stealing someone's idea on here (July)? And do black and white theme, so all my BMs would wear black and have black and white linens. I love that idea

Oh, Jill! That's terrific news!!! Absolutely... steal away! Steal other ideas, too! That's what makes the wedding your own... steal what you want from whoever and where ever you want! smile.gif If you want pics, I'd be more than happy to share! Originally, I was going to do just that... have them wear black and have them choose their own style. But, they said they wanted to match. Okay, as long as that's what they wanted. Here's the BEST thing about a black & white wedding... every girl should always have the "little black dress" in her closet! Although our dresses are floor length, they're excited to have them altered after the wedding to tea or knee length. I told them to go for it! Plus, you can add 1 or 2 other colors for accent. smile.gif Originally I was going to have all black & white invites... but I've given in. We're adding the dark pink to the invites, too. My fiance' just despises pink, but he's okay with it for this, because he'll be in all black and white. laughing.gif

Thanks July, I really love this thread! It helps so much to get ideas and discuss! I'd love to see your pics after the wedding, and if you don't mind sharing your wedding website (I think you mentioned earlier you had one?) I'd love that too (you can PM me if you want) because I have NO idea how to do a wedding website, never seen one before.... smile.gif

I think asking them straightup is the best bet. I mean I don't want to not ask them at all and they think I didn't want to have them, I'm sure they'll understand and appreciate where I'm coming from. After all, I'm only worried about their best interests and all that. I really like the idea of picking a colour/style and just letting them go from there. That would be really nice I think.

Thank you guys!!

WE JUST SET OUT WEDDING DAY!!! kicking.gif

I'm sure on VJ it's common to plan the months before for the quickie.... lol!

We are marrying on the beach in OCNJ, so we have picked June 11th. If it rains... then we will have to bump it to June 18th. We will spend 2 days on the beach then 2 days in NYC, sitting in Central Park and people watching (HAHA, we love puttering around the big City looking for trouble smile.gif )

So excited!!!!

I mean, nothing compared to the invites and stuff you guys are planning... which sounds like so much fun! it's just gonna be us two, my beach, white dress.... and gthat's it... Kinda like how Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber married... I always loved that...

We will save the obnoxious Greek reception for the end of the summer...happy happy joy joy...I can't wait to see my MIL who will sit and whisper to others that the 'big boobied girl' married her son for money... HAHAHA! Don't ask.... lets just say, she makes for great entertainment.... OMG, I'm gonna start a MIL thread... It'll be a hoot!!!!! I've got stories that'll entertain for hours!

smile.gif

Awwww fun! Yours sounds just as wonderful as everyone elses! I think marrying on the beach will be so amazing! NYC is a good idea too, we go to NYC sometimes just for the day as it's a 1 hour train ride! I love NYC

Thanks Minnew and Border, I like those ideas.... I love the purple dresses, so pretty! The theme colour idea is a good one....

OK I need advice from my fellow wedding planning friends. Lately now, I've been thinking of scrapping the whole having bridesmaids thing. My sister just had me as her MOH and her husband had a best man, that was it. I might do the same, I know it's not "traditional" but anyway! Here is why. So all of my closest friends are in Canada, and I'm already expecting of them to spend lots of $$ on travel and hotel for at least 2 nights for them and their partners. I feel bad as it is having the wedding here and making everyone travel. So, if I ask them to be my bridesmaids, on top of that I'm asking them to spend $$ on a dress, shoes, etc!! I just don't feel right doing that, plus I don't feel comfortable picking out a dress and making them wear it.... I'm not into the matchy matchy thing but I also can't tell them just wear whatever you want, that'd be wierd.... I can't afford to pay for 4 dresses either, so I'm stuck. I just think it's wrong for me to expect my friends to spend $$ on travel, hotel, dress, etc. It's too much. Maybe if I don't have any bridesmaids that will avoid the whole problem, what do you all think?

https://www.bigdates...a...&aid=136244

I plan to send my girls a card too, but may I suggest some cards from here: http://www.etsy.com/...bridesmaid card

Not sure if my link works, if not go to http://etsy.com and then search the term "bridesmaid card" and usually there is a pretty decent selection.

Nice, thanks!!

What a great idea Catherine! Here are a few suggestions, I love the flower and remembrance table idea.

http://www.wedsmack....ur-wedding.html

Flowers
Flowers are a popular way to honor loved ones. One moving gesture is for the bride or groom to place a white rose in an empty chair (next to the aisle or in the first row) as they approach the altar. White roses are popular, but not necessary. Lilies of the valley for grandmother who loved them are wonderful. How about white carnations for a mother who loved their spicy fragrance? One bride placed one white mini calla in her bouquet for each person she wanted to remember.

Remembrance Tables
Couples like to top small banquet tables with photos, candles, vases of flowers or bouquets and explanatory signs at the reception. Sometimes, these items will be stand-alone. Sometimes, they'll show up at the ceremony on the guestbook table, or on the altar.

Music
If someone in the family has a gorgeous set of pipes, one of the most moving tributes is to have them sing a dedicated song at the ceremony. Another popular approach: ask the DJ to play a special dance for an aunt or grandfather who loved to shake it on the floor.

Clothing
A touching way to remember someone is to wear one of their personal items. Brides have worn their mother's or grandmother's veils, or sashes made from the wedding dress. Grooms have worn their father's tuxes or cufflinks. And let's not forget jewelry: brides have woven a rosary, locket or set of pearls into their bouquet, and worn a father's ring around their neck or on their thumb.

Donations
The "donation in lieu of favors" is a time-tested way to honor someone you've lost to a physical illness. Individual cards or a framed table note will let guests know who was on your mind. Some brides set out real or enamel ribbons symbolizing the type of loss involved: pink for breast cancer, teal for ovarian or testicular cancer, and so on. (See Awareness Ribbons Meaning & Colors.) Another option: the bride and her bridesmaids wear awareness bracelets. You can buy the awareness charms individually and make your own, or source the finished bracelet from a number of sites.

Symbols
Anything that reminds you of a loved one is fine: butterfly bouquet picks, for example. Or a picture-frame pin and photo pinned to a bouquet wrap ribbon, or a monogram pin in the letter of someone you've lost. A number of stores sell "In Loving Memory" brooches you can pin to a sash or ribbon. InsideWeddings tells of a bride who parked a pink and white 1957 Nash Metropolitan in front of the wedding tent in memory of her mother.

Speaking of the invites, July I love those! I got mine a few weeks ago, they're Martha Stewart and they were on sale at Walmart for $20 per pack.... It comes with 40 invites, RSVP cards, etc. They are white with lace detail and a little ribbon, so cute. I just feed them into my printer, pretty simple and way cheaper than paying a printing place.

Wow, I cannot believe 175 people is "small"!! We are having between 80-100. Maybe that's why I'm not getting tha answers I want LOL!! Exactly, you are spending so much $$ the least they could do is show a little bit of courtesy. I'm not asking for a whole lot, just a call back would be nice or an e-mail

You would think that during these "hard times" businesses would really be catering to you and trying to get your business & $$. Well I'm trying to find a place to have our wedding next year, and I'm not being met with the best customer service at all. What is it with customer service!? Anyway, there is one place that seems really good but I have questions and have e-mailed twice with no reply. We met with the guy in person, he was nice but seems so busy and doesn't have time to answer questions or whatever. Well I'm not spending 8 grand on your facility if you don't give me the time of day! Then Glen's Mom went to a bridal shower at this other hall she said was super nice, so I e-mailed them for info. The price was right, so I called to see when we could come see the place in person. She was so rude and rushed on the phone and said "We're all booked up for a few weeks, sorry" and basically hung up. Didn't offer to make the appt in a few weeks or anything, just hung up. UMMMM hello you could be potentially losing alot of business and $$, why not cater to your customers and make an effort? I'm certainly not getting married at a place where the people are rude and can't be curteous enough to call me back.

Thank you for all the advice everyone! I'm having an information overload moment laughing.gif

The wedding is on a Thursday, which is pretty strange, but its the 4th year anniversary of the day we first met blush.gif So it has sentimental value! I thought we could catch some breaks having it during the week as well, but most places don't seem to see it the same way. Our DJ is great! He offered us 20% off the package because its an off peak date. Same with the florist. We didn't get a big discount, but she's going to come to the ceremony and set everything up and stay to make sure nothing goes wrong with spare flowers and things. I thought that was a nice gesture! She said she would have nothing to do that day anyways so I'm doing her the favour.

I want to go the consumption bar route, I think that would be the best for us as well. I think that's how they charge it, at least, it seems that way based on the price list. I agree that the open/host bar is the best way to go, just to show our appreciation for everyone traveling and everything. I wish my fiance would see it that way, Its caused a couple fights over the last week or so. He doesn't drink and he's against funding other peoples drinking habits. I understand his concerns but I think he's overreacting a bit... Only 4 of my college friends are coming, and I'm only really concerned about the 1, he likes to drink but he's a beer man so at least I won't get a bill for shots of whiskey or something.

Soda is an additional $2 a person, and bottled water is $2.50 a person on top of the $52 a person plated meal. Plus $100 bartender fee, 20% gratuity, and then the bar costs hopefully based on consumption. I think its time for me to be assertive and B*tchy! I'm just too nice. Honestly, I'm 5'3", I look like i'm 17 (so i hear) and I come off as very sweet and trusting... Its a license for people to walk all over me!

Huggles, you could always tell him you're not "funding peoples drinking habits" but many people enjoy a glass of wine or two with their meal. It's not a free pass to get drunk (unless he has rowdy friends or something) but most people do enjoy wine or beer with their meal. And if you do a tabulated bar that's perfect, because if they don't drink tooooo much you pay per drink!

This is just my opinion, but I find cash bars at weddings really tacky. I know not everyone can afford open bar so I'm not bashing anyone, but when you have guests especially from out of town, spending a few hundred dollars on a wedding gift for you, the least you can do is have open bar. Obviously you don't want out of control drunk guests but you're not babysitting so adults should be able to know their limit. I just don't think it's right to invite people to your party then charge them. They are spending enough on the room, travel, gift, etc.

Good point, I totally agree. That's the same rationale I had when it was suggested we might do a cash bar. I freaked out! ARGH! headbonk.gif

OMG if anyone suggests a cash bar to me to save $$, I don't think so! July I don't know if you've heard of this, I think it's Canadian but it's a party called a "Jack and Jill" or "Stag and Doe". What it is - you rent out a hall of some sort, get people to donate stuff like kitchen items, etc. Then you charge all your friends $10 or $20 to get into the hall. Also you charge them to buy raffle tickets. All the $$ goes towards your wedding. So you're basically charging your friends to help pay for your wedding. I just find it really tacky because if you can't afford a wedding then don't have one, you know what I mean don't ask your friends to help you pay for the wedding.

We're going to use them again for our rehearsal dinner invites as well as our day-after wedding breakfast/luncheon. yes.gif

They ALWAYS offer postcards for free, so place an order and wait awhile. You'll get another email with another sale and off you go again with only $8 spent! We almost spent $25 AND printing costs (ink for the printer) for something they'd print in GLOSSY and 2-sided for $8!!! Good thing I remembered vistaprint! star_smile.gif

Oh and here's another piece of stamp trivia: In Canada, we have stamps with a "P" on them. Not an amount, like here the stamp says 42. What the "P" means is that even when the price of a stamp goes up, you can still use the "P" meaning it's been paid and you don't need to add on a 1 cent stamp to it. Of course, when you buy a new pack of stamps you pay the new amount but you can always use the "P" ones even when the prices goes up!

When I asked my fiance, he said a stamp is a stamp... what are you talking about?? Hmmm... guessing perhaps no postcard stamps???

Yes, in Canada a stamp is a stamp! We don't have postcard stamps. A stamp for a letter is the same amount as a postcard.

I had shown my fiance what I wanted to do that was different from the original plan, and we were able to figure out a way to make it all work! Yea!!! good.gif Now, for the details of the invitations. unsure.gif

Is it better for me to...
1- use US stamps to get the invites to Canadian guests with CDN stamps for returning the response envelopes
2- use US stamps to get the invites to Canadian guests with US stamps for returning the response envelopes
3- use CDN stamps to get the invites to Canadian guests with CDN stamps for returning the response envelopes

If I remember right, choice #1 is the "legal" way, but I can't remember for sure. Is anyone familiar with the US/CDN mailing or postage rules? wacko.gif

#1 July! If you're mailing the invites from the US you need US stamps to get to Canada! Have your fiancee get the Canadian stamps to put on the RSVP envelopes!

Really....Really hoping for no interview notice when I do file.....but we will see!! I am praying that everything will go smoothly and quickly!!

Minnew, you don't need to send photos with AOS. That's not a requirement smile.gif I didn't send any. If you get called for an interview, then some people bring photo albums to the interview.

Huggles, congrats on your interview date!!

Is the removal of condition 2 years after your NOA1 for AOS?

No, 2 years from the date on your GC. You can apply 90 days before the expiry date on your GC

Hey all....good luck on interviews!

I just got back from Thanksgiving in Toronto. It was nice to finally get back to see family.

I had to activate AP this morn to get back in, as my GC hadn't arrived before I left.

My hubby told me that my GC arrived yesterday....so FINALLY!!! I did it, did it all by myself and now I'm good till July 2011, when I gotta gear up once again lol...

Good luck all! smile.gif

Was using your AP all good? Hopefully you didn't have to wait too long. Glad you got your GC!! Isn't it so great to be done with USCIS for a few years smile.gif

Joyce, be sure to read each instruction per form, not just the guides... the instructions are on USCIS website. It will state exactly what you need to send in with each form. You do need to send in 2 passport pics per application, so 6 in total.

I didn't send 4 copies of the G325a... I didn't think it was needed anymore. I haven't got an RFE for it, at least not yet. In hindsight I probably should have sent 4 just to be safe.

For the 131 form I just made up some dates I would ideally want to visit on. I think the point of that it to show you need a multiple entry AP.

Imagine if you got an RFE for only sending one copy of the 325... you'd think USCIS could walk over to the photocopier and make 3 copies laughing.gif

You are fine with the SSN, the number stays the same. only when you get your GC, do you go to the office and get a new SSN card with the restrictions removed
