I actually bought work with me. YUK! But its things I need to get finished up. I think I will go roaming today or tomorrow. I'm getting a cold so I would rather just stay in bed! I bought a GPS for myself at Christmas time, its paid for itself 10 times over on this trip. Those things are wonderful. No matter how many times I didn't make the turn it told me to, it still got me where I was going. Well for those that are there on Friday, see ya then!

OMG! What an awesome idea! I got a GPS for my birthday last year and didn't think of bringing it, because we'll be walking. But that's AWESOME! SOOOO glad you mentioned the GPS! good.gif Thanks, Wis-Can!

On another note... we'got a 9 hour train ride tomorrow to MTL, I think I'm doing thank you notes from the bridal showers. Oyyy... if I'm trapped in a box for 9 hours (as my fiance' says) I might as well be productive. He's worried about getting motion sickness, but I think he talks himself into the motion sickness, before we ever leave... like last night. Ugh. headbonk.gif

Don't worry, they have barf bags on all the VIA trains, you'll be fine laughing.gif

A bag that fits basically our binder of information would be permitted, yes?? Not much else will be brought in... other than a book or magazine or puzzle book with a pen.

I brought in one of those reusable grocery bags to hold my xray, the accordian folder, expresspost envelope, and I also had a little purse with no problem. If they didn't approve of my bag I would have throw it out.

I know we can't bring much of anything in with us to the interview... is a book or magazine allowed? How about a pen to do crossword puzzles?

Yes my dear! You can bring a book or mag to pass the time, definitely a pen too.

So I went on Hotwire, and I thought I had it figured out.... I studied the map and compared it to Mappquest, I thought we had for sure booked the Continental... and as soon as I booked, it popped up as Sheraton... either way i'm happy... we decided to extend our stay to 3 nights and see the City as my fiance has never been... so it was pretty decent, we got a 4* for $91 a night...

Anyone else ever stay at the Sheraton?

I was looking at flights from Philly to MTL for my fiance, and the day I checked it was only $249... we had this wedding that was on again off again drama that we were to attend, he was holding out to see if it was still on, as it was a biz contact and he felt obligated to go... well it got called off due to their not being able to agree on the pre-nup...lol... and my fiance booked the flight a few days later for $450 sad.gif Didn't wanna say I told ya so... MEN! lol! As soon as I found out about the interview, I was like 'no way am I changing my date'!!!!! My fiance actually asked if it was possible... I told him ^&*&^&&%&^ NO!!!! that wedding is not taking place, cause I knew how crazy this guys 'wife to be' was.... I called it and sure enough... glad I put my life first!!!!

Anywho, that was my gossip for the day....

smile.gif

ps. Carrie, you are on the same day? maybe we'll see eachother!

What if he flies to TO since it's cheaper and you two drive together? Air Canada used to go direct Philly to Montreal but now only US Air goes direct, sucky.

I just wanted to post here because I recived a letter from MTL regarding my interview date - along with it in the envelope there was another letter for Bradley Gaylord from South Carolina and it was addresses to a lawyer. It was regarding a K-1 interview on April 15th. I do not have the letter as I am visiting the US right now, but when my mother read it to me lastnight I asked her to mail it to the address on the letter so those poor people will get notice of their interview. I thought I would post in this forum just in case anyone knows who that is or if they themselves are on VJ.

I'm sure you have already done this--but i would contact Mtl embassy and let them know of their screw up, so they can issue a new package

That happened to me too, I got it 2 or 3 times! I kept informing MTL and they said we fixed it, they re-sent it to me again and again! Poor girl waiting for her interview date.

So I looked over my Affidavit of Support and it is actually notarized...yeah! good.gif

Question about proof... i'm organizing my file... the last 'proof' we sent in was with our original app, and back in Aug/08... I am compiling proof since that time, in case they ask for anything 'ongoing' I will have photos, and a detailed log of my Vonage account showing about 20 plus calls to each other a day.

Is that enough? I also have a travel log, of all of our visits, logging dates and duration of our visits. Should I also make copies of my cell bills? they would really just mirror my Vonage?

I am hoping to make it into the US one more time next week, where we will apply for a marriage license, so hopefully I will have that.

Is it true, that if they approved your original batch of 'proof' that they are pretty happy with what we have supplied, and the interview is just further verification?

Thanks,

yes.gif That's correct, I had more ongoing evidence at the interview (pics from Disney, more flight passes, etc) but he didn't even ask to see them. I think the amount of proof I sent originally was plenty, there was no need to ask for more. But, you can bring it to be safe. It's always better to have more than less, what if you get an IO on his/her first day on the job and they're super strict LOL

My advice is to go early so you are one of the first!

Wow... out by 10??!! I figured it might be 12 or so. We're already planning being there by 6:40ish. If I tell him 6:30, we'll be there by 6:45. tongue.gif Again, more words of wisdom from the amazing SapphireDreams! smile.gif

I don't remember seeing that requirement in any info that they sent me, but I had seen it mentioned here, so I had one and was asked for it, so thanks to whoever mentioned that!!!

The intent to marry form....my lawyer just had my fiance resign the original one, with a recent date (last week) and notarized it. Is that ok?

I think that's all we need to do... Its just the same as last time with newer dates on it. Does it need to be notarized?

No, actually nothing needs to be notarized.

So I just got back from a week in the US visiting my fiance.... I decided to call to see if there are any changes on our status.... man, did I get the worst person EVER! She was either truly clueless, or I will give her the benefit that it was 10 mins to close and she could give a **** ***** about my call lol!

She pulled up my file, she said it's open and waiting for interview.... but the good news is that it's open... uh, duh... thanks, but excuse me for not bouncing around with joy, I would expect it to be open... then she asks if I have a son on there (child) and I said yes, she said 'oh I mean step son' i'm like, nooooo he's my son.... and here is the best part 'he was born in the Philippians?' ah, no, I am Canadian, he is Canadian... born and raised.... I don't even have that type of background.... I started to get worried that they messed up our file with someone elses... she was so out to lunch.... I had to end the call....

Now I feel like I have to call back to make sure our info is correct....

this girl should not be working there sad.gif

It's getting harder and harder to come home every time, knowing that the time frame is coming so close.... I really hope we get our interview date for May... We are planning our move for June.... and i'm giving notice to my landlord this week..... these next two months are starting to feel like lifetimes crying.gif

How did you pass the immigration? I thought it was almost impossible at that stage of the process? (aka waiting for an interview)
People can be so nice or so weird when you call the DOS, I hope you'll get someone nice tomorrow!

Almost impossible? No way! Alot of us, myself included, visited the US while our visa application is pending. There is no rule that says you can't. It's good to bring ties to Canada to show you're returning, but I was never asked. Plus, you don't need to offer the info you've applied for a visa.

The train ride from Toronto to Montreal was flawless... even arrived 15 minutes early.

This hotel is swank too. It is bigger than any apartment I've ever had in Toronto. Free high-speed internet, kitchenette, living room, 2 HDTVs, and a king size bed. If anyone is just staying for one night like me, you can't really go wrong with Le Square Phillips. Complimentary breakfast at 630am and then walk over to the consulate (which is around the corner). Oh, and the hotel is only a 5 min walk from the train station. Everything is going swell so far! Tomorrow... interview and then smoked meat sammiches.

In Montreal!

And after spending about an hour re-organizing my folder, re-doing the little tabs, packing my tiny purse with passport $131USD etc, I believe I am 100% ready! Well 99%... still have to go get the express post envelope, but I know where to get it and was just waiting on the post office in the pharmaprix to open at noon.

I walked to the consulate this morning to make sure I could find it and figure out if it's walking distance or not (it is... about 15 minutes from the hotel).

So now I have the rest of the day to drive myself crazy obsessing over stupid things that I have already double and triple checked but still am not sure I have them tongue.gif

At least it's nice weather to go walk around and stuff, but I can't say that I am totally in the mood for that. I pretty much just want to get this over with!

Canadato become an american citizen or not
I totally hear you regarding this mental barrier you face when deciding to go for US Citizenship. I don't quite know what it is either that I don't like about it, but I just don't. However, I will most likely end up getting my US Citizenship so that when/if I do decide to go back to Canada with hubby (and let him go through the immigration process), I know I can move back freely and easily, should I ever decide to return back to the USA. I will probably do as Flames does and not tell anyone unless it is vitally important that they know. But hey, I'll always be 100% Canadian biggrin.gif

So here's a question for you all....

When you're doing the guest list, you get your number of invites to send out, etc. But how do you know the approximate amount of guests will actually be there? We have to give our approx. guest count to whatever venue place we choose upon signing the contract, yet it's hard to do that because there are so many "maybes" due to out of towners.... and then you only give the final count a few weeks before.... So I could be way off in guessing how many guests will actually be there. I'm inviting many of my Dad's friends he asked me to, but he said they definitely won't come. Knowing my luck they'll decide to wacko.gif

Generally, you would plan for a 10-15% drop off rate. But, I think with out of town guests, its more like 25-30%.

If I were you, I would sort your guest list by the ones you know for sure, the ones that are maybes and then maybe the ones that are going to most likely be nos. Then I would find a room that fits all the Yes and maybe 85% of the maybes... that way if you have some maybes not come and then some of the Nos come, you'll be okay.

We got really lucky with our room. The minimum is 100 people and the maximum is 300. The reason is because we paid them a hefty room rental fee. But, the food/alcohol per head was much lower than any other place, so when you add them together, it was what you would normally pay a hall here. Obviously it gets more expensive per head when our guest list drops, but at least we're safe if a lot of out out of town guests don't come.

Or, I think your best bet is to find a room that fits 85% of your guestlist - that will accept a low minimum, like maybe 65% of your list.

That's a good idea Sapphire - I think theknot lets you sort your guest list that way, I'll get started on that. I love theknot.com!

I have a question related to flowers, I am thinking about using Freeze-Dried Flowers or Silk Flowers for the wedding bouquets, boutenieres, corsages..all that fun stuff! There is a business here that prepares bouquets from freeze-dried roses in whatever colours you want. My question is how well would the flowers hold up after a 15 hour trip in a car in October, and would CBP allow Freeze-Dried Flowers to cross a POE? They are not fresh flowers, so I do not see why not, but I could see their excuse being to prevent spread bugs and disease. The reason I would like to go with Freeze-Dried or Silk is cost, but also I could not tell the difference in person when I saw the Freeze-Dried Bouquets and the whole flower package was only $400. I have not been able to find a similar business in the area I am moving to unfortunately sad.gif

http://www.thecountryrose.ca/

I know that flowers are OK to cross the border, as long as there is no soil. The problem with plants and such is the soil. My stepmom is a florist and has done weddings before in NY driving from Montreal with no problems. To be safe you could always check with the border.

Thank you! biggrin.gif That was my next step as I could not find anything on CBP website regarding restricted items except plants with soil.

I think my stepmom will do my flowers, it's about a 7-hour drive so I hope they'd be OK just in water and an AC van.... she is supertalented and gets the flowers at cost, labour is free too smile.gif It'll be much cheaper than using a florist here.

I think one of my main concerns with doing all of them at once is the cost.. sad.gif I don't even know how we're going to pay for immigration as it is without asking for help, and I really hate that.

Anyways... Since a lot of you are doing weddings in Toronto, I'm guessing you're doing the little legal thing in the US prior to that. What's everyone got planned for those? Just the two of you? Very low key?

Me too, the cost was the main issue as to not having the wedding right away. I refuse to put anything on credit for my wedding, it's cash or nothing. If I can't afford it, I'm not buying it. Along with the immigration costs, we had to pay for the moving costs, plus me not working for awhile! So with the wedding being over a year away, plenty of time to save.

Our legal ceremony was low-key, at a JOP's home.... just us 2, and we went to the Cheesecake Factory after to celebrate laughing.gif

Yay! Close to mine and Sapphires! Is it going to be in the Toronto-area?

OMG! Monday! OMG!

Ok, that's out of my system.

I met with the caterer today and it turns out that a good friend of hers is vegan. She'll be making him some marinated, grilled veggie sandwiches and has added a few pastries that have no eggs or milk. Now I can take making food for Phil's brother off my Sunday "To Do" list.

I also worked out what I'm going to do to honour my mom's memory at my ceremony. I'll be wearing her ruby and yellow gold necklace. It'll look great with the red roses I'll be carrying.

The hair and make-up trilas were yesterday. It was awesome. My stylist and my florist ended up in a huddle in the corner making plans. laughing.gif

Now I've got to go back to playing phone tag with our celebrant. We need to discuss the ceremony since we've decided to deviate from the cookie-cutter Anglican ones.

We're having a grand total of 18 people including Phil and I but it still seems like there's lots to do.

Wish us luck,
Catherine

Wow, so soon! Good luck, I'm sure it will go great! That's a nice idea about the necklace, so sweet.

Well, I haven't been participating in this thread (mainly because I'm not getting married laughing.gif ) but it's probably the best place to put this.....

My daughter and I have been wedding dress shopping for the past year. We've been everywhere, and she must have tried on at least 100 gowns. Well, Monday night we bought "The Dress". OMG, as soon as she put it on and started walking towards me, I started crying. She looked absolutely stunning. Here it is:

Shannon's Wedding Dress

Soooo pretty, I adore that dress!!

My dad (step-dad actually) picked up the invites tonight from the printers... I measured right, but I also measured wrong. So, as excited as I should be, I'm actually not. sad.gif I'm taking them to school tomorrow to take off about 1/16 of an inch to 1/8 of an inch. I measured a FULL 5" and I should have measured inside the folds. **sigh** One would assume this should be a happy day. On top of the day I've had, having measured wrong is just the cherry on a really bad, horrible, painful, and excruciatingly hurtful day. Too bad this day, of what should be filled with joy and happiness, is being overshadowed by senility (for real) and frustration by someone whose memory is going, and makes cruel accusations.

I'm trying to put on a happy face... but right now, the frown and sadness are easier than being excited over our invitations.

Awww I'm sorry you had such a horrible day rose.gif I hope you wake up tomorrow to a better one.

Okay, I can't keep track of everyone's date in my brain... so I thought I'd start this list. I know some of these dates are the "party" dates (as the "legal" weddings are taking place soon or have recently taken place), but these are the dates we've been discussing. smile.gif

Any dates I've missed? Feel free to copy this and add your date to the list!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, ideas, and support. I've got some things to obviously figure out before we finish the invitations this week. I didn't mean to unload so much last night. I had been talking to my fiance' and he was livid about my father and I just needed some outside opinions. You all are great. smile.gif Thanks again for your posts. good.gif

Hi July,

((HUGS))

Sorry about the struggles, that must be very difficult. Don't apologize for a thing, we're all here for you to just listen if that's what you need. I can't offer too much advice, but one thing re: invites. Many people nowadays, and what I am doing myself as I have step-parents too, is rather than saying the parents names, say:

The parents of

July lastname

and

Duncan lastname

Invite you to share in the joy of the marriage uniting their children

On Satuday, July etc etc....

This is the style of invite I got for a wedding next month and how I plan on doing mine. This way you are not leaving anyone out, by just saying "parents" and not all the names that is appropriate for blended families.

Also, just remember you can NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE. No matter what, there will always be someone that doesn't like/approve of something. You have to please yourself first, and try not to worry about everyone else. I know it's hard but put yourself first, this is YOUR day!! xoxo

So I'm going to look at this place today, I think it may be the one! It looks great and I've heard good reviews from a friend, so I'm hoping for the best: http://www.celebrationsweddings.com/

Looks really nice Jill, how did it turn out?

Today I went and put a deposit down on our place... now it all feels very official!

OH I loved it, but I'm so dissapointed crying.gif and a little annoyed.... I told the guy in my e-mail I had b/w 85-100 people, and he didn't mention a thing. Then when we arrive and he's showing us around, he happens to say that the minimum requirement of guests is 140!! There must be places that accept smaller parties, I've just got to keep searching!

Sapphire - That's so exciting! Congrats on finding AND getting the place you want. smile.gif

Jill - That's horrible. I know of a place in Philly that might be available for you, but it only seats 75 with tables... not the 85-100. In addition, I'm not sure if they offer catering or if you'd have to being in your own... anyway, send me a PM if you're interested.

Thanks July!! I think we are going to have closer to 100, so I'll keep looking.... actually found a few places online so I'm going to see a few more venues next weekend! Found them through theknot.com love that website!
