IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresBarcode for AOS Bill
For those of you familiar with James' Shortcuts I have a question:

I know that you need to generate a barcode and I inderstand how to create it and paste it into the AOS Bill. In the instructions (James' Shortcuts) nothing is said about personalizing the barcode. Wouldn't everbody have the exact same barcode? Or, am I supposed to type my case # into the barcode generator?

Thanks!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresTruly Thanksgiving....Rec'd NOA2
Hey Doug:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

I responded to you in my barcode posting late last night. I knew it was imminent since you said you had been touched. That is great timing - receiving the word on Thanksgiving! Hopefully, both of our spouses in Colombia will receive their Visas around the same time. Brad should be getting word anytime on his NVC approval. I am happy for both of you guys. Congratulations again and Happy Thanksgiving!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI-864 Package Missing Authorization for Release of Tax Data
UPDATE: I just got off the phone with the NVC and I was told that the "Authorization For the Release of Tax Data" form is needed for the file in "some" cases, but in others it is not. She said if I did not receive it then I should not send it. She sounded very confident with her answer. Just thought I would let everyone know. As Looking4Wife stated I'm sure it doesn't do any harm if you decided to send it even though it was not requested in your particular case. Thanks to everyone for responding with your opinions and comments.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI-864 Package Missing Authorization for Release of Tax Data
Looking4Wife:

I am now thinking that this form is country specific believe it or not. I notice that is has the Embassy Post on the bottom of the form. And, the fact that your wife is from Colombia also reinforces that theory. It would be an incredible coincidence if both of our packages were missing that particular document. There is also NO reference to it in the cover letter yet there is a specific reference to the Barcode sheet. Since I did not use James shortcuts on sending the I-864 (because it is much further ahead of the DS-230 already) I am just going to send back exactly what they sent me. If I get an RFE I guess we'll all know.

You are very observant to be able to tell that the photo of my wife in front of the elevator is the Hotel Versailles. You are correct. I usually stay there during my visits to Barranquilla. Everybody there knows me now. It looks like we have very similar timelines at this point. Let's hope things keep moving along for both of us.

Doug:

I sent you a message via email. Have a great trip!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI-864 Package Missing Authorization for Release of Tax Data
Can anyone tell me if the I-864 package they received recently from NVC contained "Authorization for Release of Tax Data" form shown in James' Shortcuts? It was definitely NOT included in my package. Is that something they still use or is James' Shortcuts outdated? I am unable so far this evening to get through to a live operator at the NVC to ask about it. Thanks!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresChanging Maiden Name to Married Name on DS-230
I think what you are doing will work fine. I remember looking into this some time ago and we finally decided just to use her maiden name all the way because it was kind of a hassle to change it in Colombia. I wanted to get it changed at the time of the marriage but they don't really do that there. I seem to remember someone saying that it can be listed as her married name on the visa at the embassy. And I am pretty sure the visa is placed inside of her passport. But if not, we will change it after she gets here. I think the biggest negative is that it brings up the issue of when she wants to travel back to Colombia and her name in her passport is different than her married name. But I don't think that is a very big deal.

I don't think there is just one way to handle this. I believe it can be done either way and each way has it advantages. I am too far down the line to change at this point because I will be sending in her DS-230 shortly (with her maiden name). I already have her signed copy here ready to go. Your decision sounds good and in reality may be the better way to go. I would like to hear what others have done and plan to do.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresTime to generate AOS Bill & DS-3032
I guess it can vary a lot because my DS-3032 was generated in 5 days. You might want to start calling about a week after NVC assigned your case number because it could be that soon. Or it could take a couple of weeks as stated in the previous response. Somewhere between 5 - 14 days.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresJames Shortcuts Question, DS-230
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I am waiting for the DS-230 to be generated which should be any day now. I have everything ready to go per James Shortcuts (DS-230 Part 1, Copy of Biographic Page of her Passport, and Barcode Cover Sheet printed from Visa Journey). Virtually all the other cover sheets and correspondence sent to me from the NVC contain a pattern of asterisks in the upper right-hand portion of the page. Sometimes the pattern changes. I notice that the DS-230 barcode cover sheet available here on Visa Journey is missings the asterisks which I am sure are going to be on the one being generated from the NVC. I am not sure if they serve any purpose such as alignment for a scanner or whether they are unimportant. I assume these asterisks are not critical or else I would seen something about that here on Visa Journey.

1. Has everybody else on here using James Shortcuts been sending in the DS-230 barcode cover sheet without the asterisks?

2. Has there been any problem or issue with this?

Thanks!
Mark

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresPhone message
I got the same message yesterday and I sent in our package using James Shortcuts. You will probably save about a week using that method. I assume India does not require anything additional beyond what is normally required. I know that some countries require more documents than others. As long as you are sure you have the correct documents and you are comfortable creating the barcode cover sheet using James Shortcuts, then that is an option to save a little processing time. It is up to you, but it is not that big of a deal either way because you are at the final step of sending documents to the NVC.

Congrats RabbitNYC also! You and Brad must be flying high today.

Brad: Sofia and I are going to do the same thing regarding travel during the interview because she didn't want to deal with bringing all of her stuff to Bogota. We will go back to Barranquilla, but maybe just for a day or two because my work is not as flexible as yours. I am sure all will work out during your interview. Thanks in advance for letting us know about the contents of the package she receives. I am really happy to hear that all of the waiting is finally over for you guys.

I was hoping you would hear something today. One last hurdle and you guys are done! I assume you are planning on accompanying Vicky during her appointment at the embassy. I am a little curious exactly what she receives in the mail and what she needs to accomplish prior to the interview. I may hit you up in a couple of weeks to find out what is included in the package so that I can give Sofia a heads-up. It must be exciting to book your flights and hotel for a trip this month to Colombia. Good luck with everything.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresQuestion concerning DS-230
Yes, they mean the beneficiary. There was a recent post here on VisaJourney discussing the same topic. I got the same message and I took it to mean that the DS-230 had been generated. You are always the petitioner and she is always the beneficiary as far as I know. I immediately mailed in the DS-230 package using James Shortcuts, but our package was fairly minimal (DS-230, barcode cover sheet, and a copy of the biographic page of her passport). The message was updated about a week later to indicate that they had received our package. I think you may need to send in more info because Kenya is in Africa and I believe they have different requirements. I'm sure you already know all about that.

It took two weeks to finally receive the DS-230 package from NVC; I think there was a little delay because of the holidays. It looks like recent submissions are taking about a month to complete after NVC receives the DS-230 package. So hopefully you will hear something sooner than the 6-8 weeks listed in the automated system. Good luck.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresStrange Message from NVC - CR1 Case
OK, Thanks. So it definitely has happened to other people.

I recieved the same message stating I was missing my D230 on Jan 6th. I sent my D230 form in on December 11th. I called yesterday and they said 2 to 4 more weeks until my case will be done. They started reviewing my DS230 on Jan 9th.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresStrange Message from NVC - CR1 Case
Rabbit:

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering when you got that message. Did you get yours this late in the process, 3 weeks after you mailed in the DS-230? And did the message go from saying they had received everything (ever since the time they received the DS-230) to the bogus message at this late date? Thanks!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresStrange Message from NVC - CR1 Case
I decided to post this in the CR1 forum because there seems to be more activity here than in the NVC forum, but if the moderator decides to move it, that is fine. I want to let you know what happened with me this morning. It was very strange. I call into the NVC automated voice system periodically to see if there are any updates such as a message stating that some information might be missing, etc. I could catch it early and send it back in fast. Actually, I have been very thorough and it it would be extremely unlikely that I would be missing anything. For about two weeks the message has been saying "we have received all your documents and wait 6 to 8 weeks for the review to be completed."

Well guess what? I called this morning and there was a message stating that "My documents had been reviewed and there was missing or incomplete information and a letter had been sent yesterday detailing what was missing." Incredible. I called back and spoke with an operator and she told me that a letter was sent out yesterday, but to ignore it. The letter was sent out in error. It said something about missing the visa application (DS-230) which THEY had already confirmed was received January 4th???? She said they have it now and and to wait 2 to 4 weeks for the review to be complete.

Hopefully, she knows what she is talking about and this confusion won't result in my case being delayed. Who knows. It has been 2 weeks since they "officially received" the DS-230 and 3 weeks since I mailed it in. I have heard about people receiving this "missing information" message after they send in the I-864 and the NVC is still waiting for the DS-230, but I have never heard about anyone getting the message like I did. I am just curious if anyone else has experienced this before or if anyone has any thoughts on this incident. Thanks!

Hey Mark, I got my DS-230 packet in the mail today. By my signature you can note that on the recording on the1/17 it said generated. The date on my letter in the packet is 1/16 and I received it today 1/24. Hope everything else is this quick for me but not counting on it. Any word yet?

Doug

Doug:

That's great. You got yours really fast. It took 16 days to finally get the DS-230. It also took a long time for them to show it as "officially" received. They received the DS-230 on 12/28/06 but the date on the automated voice system says 01/04/07. I think ours got caught up in the holiday backlog. I am sure it was a skeleton crew at NVC the week after Christmas and before New Years. Then there was TWO days off for NVC: Jan 1st (New Years Day) and Jan 2nd (President Ford's Funeral). We haven't heard anything yet, but hopefully it will be soon. If yours keeps progressing fast maybe we'll be in Bogota at the same time. Talk to you soon.

Sufi:

The package I received looks very much like what is contained in this link http://www.visajourn...230_Package.pdf, except I did not receive Page 3 (vaccination info) and Page 4 (UK police certificate Info). Here is another link from the Department of State Website which contains most everything that was in my package except for the DS-230 itself http://travel.state....applying_in.pdf

The package also contained a barcode cover sheet. Information on how to customize the barcode cover sheet for the DS-230 can be found here http://www.visajourn...h...ic=117&st=0. You will need to scroll down a little to find it.

I do not know much about applicants from Pakistan. I am not sure if you receive the same package as applicants from Colombia or if you have to send in additional information with your DS-230. I am sure other members of Visa Journey can assist you with that if you don't already know. In other words, I would not depend on this response as your final source of information. I was mainly responding to your question about what came in my packet (Blank DS-230, Barcode Cover Sheet, Additional Instructions as can be found in the links I provided above). Hope this helps.

Hi florida-photo,

I have a quick question. I am planning on using Jame's Shortcut and want to make sure that I send correct documents to NVC with DS-230. Can you please tell me what forms/documents/coversheet etc you received in your DS-230 packet?

I was just curious about something. I have received all of my other forms from the NVC in a timely manner. But the DS-230 has not yet arrived even though it was generated 15 days ago. Is that normal for the DS-230 to take so long to arrive? Again, this is more curiosity than anything else because I am using James Shortcuts and sent in the DS-230 package a couple of weeks ago after the system said the DS-230 was generated. Just wondered about other people's experiences. If this is normal, then it is a good reason for using James Shortcuts. Thanks.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresCase Completed At NVC

Congrats Mark, looks like they are still running at about 4 weeks for approval. I was wondering about the update on the recording as well. In any event, I am looking at the 16th of the month for my 4 week day so hopefully can find something out soon thereafter. I will email you this week but great to hear you are on your way. Sounds like you will miss the March interviews unless they get it sent really quick.

Doug

Doug: You should be hearing something real soon. I would anticipate our interview will be sometime in April depending on when the NVC sends our case to Bogota. There is still a slight possibility for the end of March, but pretty unlikely since February is a short month. I can handle it either way. I'm just happy our case got completed.

Similar situation... I just talked with "Zoe" at NVC. She told me my review was completed today, 2/6/2007, although the automated msg says that they are waiting on missing info.

She said my case will be sent to the embassy within 2-4 weeks (March 6 at the latest). So, naturally, I inquired why would it be so long before shipping my case to the embassy since the review is already completed... she said because they ship the cases to the embassy in bulk, not one at a time...

Looking4Wife: Congratulations on NVC completing your case! I might be seeing you in Bogota. I think our cases will be sent to Bogota sooner than 2-4 weeks. They seem to always over estimate timelines at the NVC. Many times cases are sent out in about a week, but we'll just have to see what happens.

That's awesome news!! Congratulations

I was just posting elsewhere this morning that my DS-230 was generated on January 29, and the automated system is still not updated. I wish I had called them last week I could have saved myself a week and sent of my DS-230, oh well, it's there now!

Hope you get an interview soon!

Riblet: It sounds like the automated system is not updating for other issues as well. They must be having some problems. It actually did update for us when the DS-230 was generated. It's a good thing you inquired about the status of the DS-230 because sometimes it takes a long time to receive it in the mail.

That's great news! Congratulations! I hope you get an interview date assigned soon! By the way, does NVC assign it for you or does the local consulate do that? I dont know if there's a difference? For Canada, it's assigned at the NVC.

Our Mao: In Colombia I guess it is a little different than Canada because the Consulate schedules the interview. It normally is scheduled about 2 months after NVC completes the case.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresCase Completed At NVC
Our case has been completed by NVC and will be forwarded to to Bogota shortly!

Here is some important information for those of you waiting for their cases to be completed by NVC:
The automated system apparently does NOT have updated information. I called NVC this morning because it seemed to be taking a little longer than normal for NVC to complete our case. I received the same automated message which has been on there for about 3 weeks "NVC has completed the review of your documents and has found some information missing or incomplete. The NVC mailed a letter on Jan 17th indicating what info is missing...." That is the bogus message which most everybody seems to be getting. NVC's asks for the DS-230 even though it was received weeks earlier. I decided to speak with an operator this time just to make sure that there was nothing additional I needed to know. She informs me that our case was completed on Feb 1 and will be forwarded to Bogota shortly! Our case was completed 5 days ago and the automated system still does not reflect our correct status. Those who have been waiting about a month since sending in their DS-230 may want to call and speak with an operator at NVC.

Thanks Doug. I have been talking to some people on here and I think we have decided to go ahead and just request it on the DS-230 at the time of the interview. I'm driving down to Miami Tuesday for the flight to Bogota. Let's try to talk before then.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresSocial Security Number

We did that checking the box thing when Jomo applied and it didn't work.

We were told he had to have a work permit in order to get a SSN here. Had to wait for the AOS to be approved before the green card to arrive before they would issue him his SSN. It took us 5 months to get all that. Once we had all that in hand, he was able to apply for and receive his SSN.

Jomo's girl: Thanks for the response. Actually the work status of a K1 visa holder and a CR1 are different. CR1 visa holders are eligible to receive a Social Security card right away because they get their conditional green card immediately (a few weeks after entry I think).

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresSocial Security Number
Just wondered if anybody knows whether it is best to request the Social Security number at the time of the interview or do it after arriving in the U.S. My wife has her CR1 interview in 2 weeks in Bogota. I spoke with someone in my local Social Security office yesterday and he strongly suggested waiting until she arrives in the U.S. to request the number. He said that he gets a lot of calls from people waiting months to get their Social Security number when requesting it at the time of interview or POE. He said that it adds additional layers of bureacracy. Also, will NOT checking the box requesting the Social Security number at the time of the interview affect the ability to obtain it after arriving in the U.S.? Any input or personal experiences on this subject would be appreciated.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresI-130 Approved - How much time until the Interview
Sorry, I screwed up the previous reply. Our interview date in Bogota was scheduled approximately 5 months after the I-130 was approved. With luck you might get an interview a couple of weeks sooner than that, but not much sooner going by the current timeframes. It could also be several weeks more if you do not use James Shortcuts or if something was missing or incomplete in your submissions to NVC. The interview is normally scheduled 1.5 - 2 months after NVC completes the case. Good luck with everything.
