CanadaAnother good reason not to get a lawyer
Peachey and I came here because the lawyers I talked to quoted me 5-7 THOUSAND dollars for the process.

I love Peachey, and if it really did cost that much that's what we'd do... but those prices are just ridiculous.

You guys here saved us so much money, time, and hassle (I hate lawyers).

Plus, you all keep me sane while we wait eternally for stuff to happen. smile.gif

Peachey treated me to my first NHL game in Toronto last year. It was fantastic.

I'm a big fan of the Hershey Bears personally, but they aren't NHL - they just have cheap tickets and fun games.

CanadaDoes anyone have DirectTV instead of Comcast?
I'm actually in a weird situation. I _have_ to use Comcast.

My landlord gives me cheap rent, but one of the rules is no dishes on the townhouse. Verizon won't do anything for me, but they said if I get 40 of my neighbors to sign a 1 year contract they'll promise to move into my neighborhood within 3 years.

(Really sales dude... if I do your job for you, annoy everyone, get them to sign up for a full year... you'll be here in 2012.... WOW!... *sigh*)

Comcast infuriates me with their service, bills, and WHY THE HECK IS THERE AN AD ON MY MENU!!!!! (Seriously, I pay EXTRA to have a DVR with a giant ad? #######?!)

*calms down*

I have no adons, 1 extra channel (+5 bucks), and I'm sitting at 160 a month. Unreal.

I've told them several times when calling about issues their cost is ridiculous and if I had any choice I would terminate with them in a heartbeat. They don't care in the least.

There was a question in some forum here last night that I read, the question was - I am taking 5 photo albums with me to the interview, since you can't carry bags is it ok if I take them in a cardboard box.

In the junk category, was probably the receipts from meals we had together in Canada.

At the last minute, I decided to not include them.

I was just following the guides and trying to be thorough.

I hope they appreciated that I organized all the phone records, receipts, card photocopies, hotel receipts, plane tickets, various other event tickets, and our DragonCon badge photocopies by date. It took a long time.

I sent in a printed list of every phone call longer than 60 seconds that we ever made to each other. Cell or land line, chronologically ordered.

Then again, I'm insane and #######.

I also photo copied every card Peachey ever sent me with post mark, and even tickets to zoos/aquariums/sporting events.

CanadaAmerican visiting Canadian girlfriend for a week
I've been in your shoes many times, 90% of the time they really don't care at all.

Most important is have a name of the person you're coming to visit and know the address or location you're staying at.

Just remember, short and simple. Answer their questions directly. Don't lie.

I've been pulled aside into secondary as well (freaked me out)... same rules apply.

Most times they aren't looking to give you problems, just looking for the weird freaky people. Like the guy in secondary who brought an apple along into Canada and refused to surrender it... and was screaming about them taking his apple.... Yeah...

You'll make it and much fun will be had by all.

If you have any more questions - since I've done what you're doing so many times feel free to shoot me a PM - I'll happily answer anything you got. smile.gif

CanadaQuestion about Visiting fiance while K1 is pending
@DarkChilde

Don't panic, that's the worst thing to do.

Bring a copy of your NOA2, and any other paperwork you have. If you are employed ask your boss for a letter explaining that you have a job and will be fired if you don't return. If you have a car/house loan or a lease contract bring a copy of it as well.

IF they decide to be a pain, they _can_ ask for proof of regarding your immigration status and request proof of your ties to Canada.

If they ask and you don't have the info they have every right to deny you.

But, don't worry Peachey has come across several times being in the stage you're in and we've never needed this extra documentation. One border guard asked to see it because I was holding a stack of papers... but he seemed more interested in being rude than actually denying entry.

As we always say, be honest and upfront. They don't always like when you're coming down for 2 weeks (we've run into this as well), but answer every question and have your proof and you'll be perfectly fine.

My apologies if I came across harsh. I'm much more comfortable helping you now that I know more information. I wish my finacee could stay 6 months strait!

Defiantly include at least the 5 pictures of you together - since that one is easy for you two. One thing that I did (no idea if they noticed or not) is made sure that it was fairly apparent that the pictures were at different locations.

I included other things such as pictures of both of us at a location with photocopies of timestamped tickets (like... a local zoo).

Cards or letters or emails if you have them from before you moved, are great as well.

You said you didn't have any plane/ferry tickets... do you have any reciepts from hotels? They take those as well.

I will think about it some more and post later this evening. smile.gif

CanadaProof of ongoing relationship
I do not wish to be overly harsh, I'm just going to say the following off the very little information you provided.

6 months is, I believe, the most you can stay in the US in a 12 month period without some type of alternate (in this case you're trying for K-1) visa. With the current time periods (at least if you're on the east coast) you're looking at a 10-12 month K-1 process...

As best I understand it, you are going to have some difficulties legally fulfilling the requirements of the K-1 visa and living with your future spouse. Not saying you can't do it, but I don't know how you could without staying longer than you're permitted or falsifying documents.

You may want to take a look at the other types of immigration, specifically the AoS approach.

If I am wrong (and I hope I am), someone smarter than I please correct me. smile.gif

Yes, that is what she said and she is correct - no passport = no border crossing.

And yes, you can have your medical at ANY of the panel physicians on that list.

i got the assumption that i go and do the interview, then i have to wait a couple more months before i find out of its approved or not..why do they take my passport away? i know i can't cross without a passport but i didn't know they took your passport away

The interview is a very late step.

First, your I-129 packet gets sent.
Then you get your NOA1 & NOA2.
After your NOA2, border crossings are still possible but you'll want extra documentation.
At some point, you'll get your packet 3 in the mail - fill this out and wait for an interview.
Finally, you'll have an interview, and be (hopefully) approved. At this point you'll be mailed a visa.

This is the point where you can NOT cross as a visitor any longer. Crossing into the US will trigger the K-1 visa to be activated meaning you have three months to get married or you will have violated the terms of the visa.

There is only one interview in the process.

ohh yeah so after the interview if it's approved i CAN go back, it just means once im there, im there for good
right?

You're there for a minimum of 3 months, yes.

You can file for Advanced Parole to be able to get back to see your friends and family fairly quickly - but I think that still takes a month or two (from timelines I read).

You can go back to Canada at some point in the future, once you have more of the process complete than me.

As an example to be clear, this is Peachey and I's timeline:

2/9/2009 - I 129F Package Sent
2/10/2009 - I 129F Package Received at Vermont service centre
2/12/2009 - Check Cashed
2/12/2009 - NOA1 received
6/9/2009 - NOA2
6/24/2009 - Packet 3 received
7/14/2009 - Packet 3 sent
7/27/2009 - Medical
10/16/2009 - Still waiting for an interview.

1) It doesn't have to be Toronto, but it must be an approved physician... I believe the closest is in Toronto, for you.
2) Just indicate that you'll be staying with him, yes. Be careful how you phrase it, respectfully that statement is fine - smartly and you're asking for a world of hurt.

My kitty is safe at home, busting into my bedroom to sleep on the pillows of my bed. For this reason I love her.

My uncle once disbelieved his kids that they were closing the basement door every night before going to bed, because every morning the cat was upstairs.

Claiming he didn't like cats very much, this was very upsetting to him (cat hair, knocked over stuff, ect).

One evening he sat down in the basement with the lights off and the door closed waiting, just to see.

The cat jumped up on the door knob, putting all 4 paws on it. Then, it slowly slid it's rear two paws backward until the knob started to turn - then falling it lashed out with it's front leg - catching the knob and pulling it.

The door (not a heavy door, just a light inside door) creaked open a little bit unlatched - the cat reached under it and pulled it the rest of the way open and went upstairs.

Cows, very dirty - don't suggest touching them. Worse yet, they often have very potent drugs especially on the top of thier backs and sometimes heads. If you do touch, wash your hands.

As for cow tipping, don't do it - you can kill the cow.

True, I thought that period was slightly shorter with the K-1 visa however. For some reason my brain is thinking 3 months... or am I very off?

Most people underestimate the emotional pain of leaving their country....until they are actually here...and it feels like their world has turned upside down a bit.

This concerns me, cause you and others have said it... so to help I left room in our budget for Peachey to make some return trips home. (I will try to come, but my job can be demanding.)

It seems almost like a grieving process, so I will do my best to be there for her - as I know it's going to be difficult.

Not sure if there's anything else I can do.... with a hurt like that she'll just need some time.

For me, I'm excited for a few years down the road when I get to move to Canada. I've moved many times, so I don't feel like it will be quite as hard for me.

My family is less close than Peachey's is to her, so that won't impact me as hard. The thing I'll miss most is my job and best friend.

Canadahow DO people get by doing the A.O.S
@thetreble

I think some of us stuck with the impassable dead swamps of Mordor er.. Montreal, are just frustrated and may have spoken a bit harshly.

I did not mean to imply that anyone whom has befriended and helped me and Peachey so much on this forums have done anything wrong.

It's just frustrating to see the posts/comments by people intending to abuse the AoS system (or the people who already have and "didn't know"), while we're stuck being away from the ones we love that hurts us so bad.

In closing, You rock, your dog is cute, I was upset and spoke too harshly.
