It feels like sparkling Christmas lights topped with snow, and fresh air and pine needles with cinnamon and fancy dresses with sparkly shoes.

Anytime anyone on these forums mentions cinnamon, I'm going to have to chuckle a bit. Sorry sprainlenes. whistling.gif

We got snow this morning, so I can mail you a box with all the required elements in if it would help!

Last new years, I was a ball of nerves trying to come up with a good way to ask Peachey to marry me... This year, I'm staring at my computer screen trying to remember what I'm supposed to be working on for 24 more minutes before I go get married.

Maybe I'll feel like your new years next year.... Though I'm going to have to replace the dress with a suit... and uh... the shoes.. oh with a sparkly tie. That works!

Today is my last day and then my vacation begins! I can't work... too excited. Well no, I actually have quite a bit to do and keep me busy, but I am doing my morning rounds on the interwebz. tongue.gif

Omg Christmas is less than a week away! I haven't told ANYONE what I have got them yet! This is a record. I have asked my husband to guess, and he never did guess correctly so that's cool.

Every single year my son builds one of those already cut out/half made gingerbread houses. I found a cool one at wegmans in the German food sections called Gingerbread Haus. I am going to pick that up tonight because I love the word: Haus. tongue.gif

Awesome!

It was a tradition growing up to give people bizarre hints leading up to Christmas. I tried it, but Peachey is too smart for me. She figures out all her gifts and then there's no happy surprise. sad.gif

Seriously though, my dad would tell my mom stuff like "You can't kill an octopus with it."

My favorite was one year he sent her on a scavenger hunt. She opened a little box with a hint, and went all around the room finding new little hints.

She got to a hint that said to "pull the train out of the tunnel" and one of the flatbed cars had a ring box on it. She got so excited that when she opened the ring box she missed the final clue.

Thinking the box was empty she lost it, whipped the ring box across the room at dad and yelled "VARBA'S DAD!! I CAN NOT BELIEVE YOU GAVE ME AN EMPTY RING BOX!! WHY WOULD YOU THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA ON CHRISTMAS!!"

After we calmed her down a bit and pointed out the last hint everyone was laughing so hard it didn't matter. smile.gif

Worst I did was sneak out for a midnight snack of nachos on a vacation. My mom had baked them in a cookie tray, but decided to throw them out... instead of throwing them out she put dish soap on to pre-soak them later and forgot...

All that said, I'm in the kitchenette at midnight in the dark shoveling a handful of yummy nachos into my mouth when this horrid taste crosses my poor 'buds.

Years later, I found a t-shirt that says "don't eat soap" and has a little duck farting bubbles. Quite appropriate.

The biggest thing is, it allows _you_ to control what webpages can do on your machine. Instead of websites dictating what they want to do to your machine when you go there.

There is always a risk that sites will infect you with viruses/trojans when you visit if you don't have some type of control Even sites you trust can be hacked to distribute baddies.

If you use the 3 addons we talked about correctly: You never see an ad, you are completely protected from malware even if you visit shady sites, and companies can't store information about you in a persistent manner for data farming.

Horay!

Just as a side note, they are legal in all of Canada, and every state except Maine, Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, Georgia, and Hawaii.

From the research I've read, Hawaii is the one state where it makes the most sense. They would cause issues with the ecobalance or whatever the heck you call it. Because it's in their proper climate range all year in the whole state.

I love the lil buggers, and I'd love to get one. However, PA is being very stupid about them right now.

This is what I've learned researching them to see if I can get one.

In PA, "wild" animals and "domestic" animals are treated very different. In the early 90's, some jerk decided that hedgehogs were a danger to indigenous birds and got legislature to classify them as wild animals.

This makes importation of the illegal, however there were breeders in PA who imported prior to the law changing. They had licenses to keep and breed them, and it was determined that "legally" it was "ok" for them to continue as long as they never imported any more and just kept the same blood lines that they always had.

At some point the P[ennsyvania]G[ame]C[commision] decided to start a holy war against these cute lil guys.

They sent letters to most/all breeders accusing them of illegally importing all of their stock. They were served papers and advised by marshals to get all of their stock out of the state "or else".

Many of them protested, calling congresspeople, police stations, and the PGC - asking what they had to do to continue business as they had done nothing illegal. They were either ignored or told to get rid of the illegal animals.

In the early 2000's the "raids" commenced. This might sound dramatic, but it is completely true.

Hedgehog breeders started having State Troopers show up with search and seizure warrants, kicking down doors, and taking every hedgehog on the premises.

In one case, they even went into the breeders house and took the two that were the kid's pets. When asked if they would be cared for or at least humanely euthanized, the breeder was told to mind their own business and stop conducting illegal breeding practices or they'd revoke their breeding license. (Which really, at this point, does it matter?)

It is apparently to the point now where, any report of a hedgehog as a pet will invoke a warrant for seizure and destruction of the "wild animal." There are also reports of fines as high as 100$ a day for every day they can prove you had it.

People got pissed about it and demanded an answer from the state government (cause honestly, this is BULLCRAP). This is what they had to say:
"Hedgehogs are considered dangerous and injurious to Pennsylvania's native wildlife. Hedgehogs feed on the eggs or young of ground-nesting game, and can carry diseases like Leptospira pomona (affects young dairy calves) and ringworm which affects humans. Hedgehogs were released by people in New Zealand in 1885, and now are more numerous there than their native range in Britain. Since Pennsylvania shares the same climate changes as Britain and New Zealand, hedgehogs would be able to survive the winter and possibly start a wild population in Pennsylvania. For these reasons the Commission does not allow the importation or possession of hedgehogs."

This irritates me greatly, as the typical hedgehog is actually a pygmy african style hedgehog. It's my understanding that they can not build up the fat reserves needed to survive hibernation - which they do if the temperature goes under 65F (18C). In fact, in the care sections of articles talking about care for hedgehogs, they very clearly say to be extremely careful to not let them get cold or they often die.

The PGC has gone so far as to stop transports (semis) hauling animals from NY to other states (not even stopping in PA) taking out the hedgehogs and killing them. cray5ol.gif

They are legal in 45/50 states in the US, including EVERY state bordering PA. But for some reason, we have declared a holy war against them. (Not to mention my tax money pays for all this effort to kill them.)
