I've never brought Zippos, but they do sell them on every corner here. I doubt the quality is high though. I saw some the other day that had GI's names on them and appeared to be very old. I'm really wondering if they are authentic, or pirated.

The green oil, or Eagle Oil, in the states is of a different formula. That's why many people will ask you to bring it. If you want to get on somebodies good side give them a bottle. Any Asian store in your area will have it. It should be about $5 a bottle.

I appreciate the ringing endorsement Bryon. I stand by the statement though. You'd be fine. I can assure you that if it did come down to moving here you'd find good paying work in no time flat. I'd walk you through the whole thing.

Wait for the letter to arrive and proceed from there.

For example: I went to the bookstore today to pick up a few textbooks. I ended up having a conversation with the director of a local electronics company that does work on the power grid. Turns out they need someone to teach technical English to their employees 10 hours every week. Wage? $30 per hour. I know you're capable of that and there should be other companies that need that type of teacher. good.gif

This place is a trip, that's for sure. I had a deranged lunatic come up to me today while I was buying a soda. I wish I could have got a video of this guy, but I didn't want to provoke him. He was wearing an Osama Bin Laden t shirt, was filthy and had a gash on his shoulder that had to have been done with a wire. It looked like someone tried to garrote him, but just got the shoulder. Anyway, I was on my bike and he started babbling something in Vn. Finally I pointed to his shirt and told him I didn't like it. That's when a couple of the locals decided to usher him off. I'd like to know what he was saying, but I'm probably better off not.

Asia: East and PacificVietnam to Open Consulate General in Houston
A Vietnamese mission, led by Le Dung, former spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, has arrived in Houston city of Texas state, the US, to prepare for the opening of another Vietnamese general consulate in the country.

Dung, who has been appointed as the head of the Vietnamese General Consulate in Houston city, met with the US Department of State representative in Houston, Betty Mc Cutchan, shortly after his arrival to ask for the representative’s coordination in the preparations.

Dung said the Vietnamese General Consulate in Houston is likely to be inaugurated no later than September.

The new general consulate in Houston, Vietnam second after another in San Francisco in California, will mark a new step forward in Vietnam-US relations. It is expected to boost the economic, trade, investment, cultural and education relations between Vietnamese and US partners.

The opening of a general consulate in the biggest city of Texas, home to many Vietnamese-American people, will also create a direct link between the overseas Vietnamese community in the US with the homeland, as well as provide more favourable conditions for dealing with issues related to overseas Vietnamese in Texas and the US

Visa on Arrival? I am usually able to get my visa by overnight USPS in 10 days or less. I have always been required to present the visa before boarding the filght to show that I wont be turned away at poe.

I did a visa on arrival when I came. It worked like it was supposed to. When I boarded in San Francisco I gave them a number. The women started chattering to each other and called over a superior, who showed them how to process it.

Hi Vjers

After using Xoom.com to send money to Vietnam for over a year and a half, I've stopped using them for several reasons:

1. Poor customer service, if you need them, they only answer emails with "canned" answers that don't address your problem. If you call them they don't answer the phone....... After repeated calls (I'm persisitant) , and waiting for over 2 hours on hold, I get "canned" answers from them. In other words, no customer support!!

2. They take your money and "play" with it for several days before sending to the country where it's suppose to go. For example, they will debit my bank account within 2 business days but not deliver the money for over a week after the money has been debited. Their online status shows that transaction is "in processing"....... In other words they take all the transactions in process (Think MILLIONS!!!) and use your money to make short term loans to businesses to make them more money.......

3. The hidden fee of a lower currency exchange rate, ie USD to VND is around $1=1600VND, they use a rate of $1=1588VND.

4. I've found a better service....

If you open a WAMU (Washington Mutual Bank) online checking account (and saving if you want, it's also a good deal no min balance and over 3% interest). The online checking account is free of monthly fees, supplies free checks, cash back on using their debit/credit card upt to $250 a year and FREE OUTGOING WIRE TRANSFERS INCLUDING INTERNATIONAL WIRE TRANSFERS. There is possible exchange rate fees and other fees at the bank you send the money to. In Thi's case, TechComBank (according to her family) doesn't charge any fees for receiving the wire and gives a higher exchange rate than XOOM but they have keep $20 in their account at the bank. So that's what we're doing now instead of XOOM .

If everything works out like it should, this seems like the perpect way to send money!!!

I found Western Union to be pretty reliable though they have recently raised their rates on money transfers. I tried to have my fiancée open up an account so that I could transfer funds from my account to hers but for whatever reason every Vietnamese person that I speak with are opposed to the banks. I am not sure why this is. I would think that it would be a more secure means of exchanging currency than at the local jewelry store.

That was my thought. I was just going to leave an ATM card on an account I have here in my city. When I wanted to send money I would just deposit money into the account and tell them they could withdraw however much it is. There will be an ATM fee and international fee of a total of $3 for the bank I use myself. For now though when I have needed to send Xuan any money we just use Western Union. It gives receipts of who from and who to and it has that information on the web site too. It does cost more but the quick access to money and receipt are worth it to me.

Just a thought

Jack in Whiteland there is are 2 Pilot Travel Centers and in Seymour there is a Travel Center of America. Western Union has a special program called Direct Connect. You call 877.984.0473 and give them the information. They will then give you an 8 (or maybe 10) digit code. You then take the cash (and it must be cash, as stupid as that is these days) to either travel center (to my knowledge only Pilot and T/A participate) and pay them. It is only a $6 fee for up to $300 I think. It is cheaper than the regular Western Union service. If you do it make sure and ask if you can get a gold card. That way you just give them your number every time and they pull up the information.

But, that's just me!

I dont know what to say, but my fiance try several times to make a direct contact with Mr ME and failed, Truong- Mr ME 's assistant always said: "I couln't contact Mr ME, he 's not pick up the phone " It's not like here in US, when we have an issue and need to contact lawyer, then we can set up an appointment so easy. About Mr Truong education, I really hestitate to ask, just simple use the term "assistant" for him.

This afternoon, my fiance submitted all doccument which the consulater office required ( 5 counts) After 4 hours long waiting in exshauted , my fiance receive another green slip. In this slip, it says that your case requires additional processing in our office, you dont need to submit futher documents. We will contact you when we have finished processing your case. I really dont know what to do any more, any one have similar thing like this happened? I guess I have to call Mr ME direct from here talk to him instead for talk to Mr Truong.

I figure Mr. Truong knows more about U.S. Immigration laws and the Consulate at HCMC than all of us combined, but I would still get ahold of Ellis. If he doesn't meet your expectations, then let everyone on here know. He gets alot of business from this site, so I'm sure he wants to keep his reputation on here good.

Jonas, I am going to be brutally honest, here. Painfully plain. There is nothing anyone here can say that will put your mind at ease. In fact, if you are very serious about attempting some sort of mental tranquility, I would just not visit Visa Journey at all until you get your NOA2, which could be several more months. Mine took 5 months.

Right now, the only thing you get from VJ is stories about people who got their NOA2 in three weeks, so you worry about yours taking longer than 50 days. Or, you hear about it taking someone three years, and you worry that your petition will be the next to get lost in the system. Trust me. Take a vacation from VJ for a while. I went there once. Hey, maybe you guys can settle something for me that I've been since unable to figure out:
What's that stuff that looks like fried rice that folks in HCMC spread out on the bare sidewalk, seemingly so it can dry/cook in the sun? Do they eat it after it's been sitting on the sidewalk? Do they wash it? It didn't seem like it was ever on even a tarp or something, but like I said, right on the ground. What is that stuff?

It's burnt dried rice that you find on the bottom of the rice cookers. They like to dry it and wait for it to be crispy and eat it. I think it's nasty myself but some people eat it as a snack. The old country side folks like to eat it and I always see them out on the streets where dust and dirt blow all over there. Some of the foods in Vietnam don't exactly pass FDA standards or aren't very hygienic.

Thanks. I'll be able to sleep like a baby again now that that's cleared up.
That's absolutely disgusting that they don't put anything under it. Dogs take dumps on the sidewalk, and drunks pee on it. I know I do.
Doesn't sound half bad, if I wouldn't have to eat it off the bare street, and perhaps with some spices and salt on it.

I'm glad that was cleared up. My first thought was that the substance you were describing sounded a lot like rice, which is all the rage in Asia from what I hear. laughing.gif

Congratulations, Joe! Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

Seriously, I also used Orbitz for all three of my trips, and I never found anything close to $1019, 2 days or not. Is that 2 day trip on China Air Lines, perchance?

No, it's American and Asiana. Korea is the layover (14 hours). One catch I found after the fact is that American is going to make me pay $80.00 for 2 suitcases. That's still $50.00 less than I paid in February and $400 or so less than the next best deal I was able to find recently.

I've been running prices too Jack. Try Best Travel Store:

http://www.bt-store.com/

They're only good for flights originating in the U.S. or R/T.

Then there's Airlineconsolidator.com

http://flweb12.ypsil...r...eway=1

They've came back with some decent prices.

It is getting near that time of year and I wanted to send a card to my soon to be In-Laws (Mother and Father). Any suggestions of what may be ok for the card to say and more importantly what may be offensive if anything? And is there someone on here that can translate a phrase that I would write on each card?

Be yourself and write just like the way you would to your own. Personally, being a VNese, I know the "older" generations only give hard time with their own kind "in-laws". In other words, double standard.

You're another race, so whatever you do, they expect your behavior to be "acceptable". All they care is getting their daughter outta that place ASAP, aka getting the Green card.

Intresting. I was hoping to learn more about custom. I have never thought about Xuan or her family as "another kind". I have only thought of us as the same with only different customs. You are also the very first to point out that we are different "races". Guess I never thought about that either. You comment is very intresting to me, it appears that while I did not learn anything about custom from you comment, I have learned something about perception.

Thank you
