QUOTE (Allie @ Nov 15 2007, 06:26 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I just went to the mailbox and finally my EAD card was there.
It says expires Oct 19 2008. What happens when it expires do I have to re-apply for another?

Hopefully by then you'll have your green card, but you can apply for a renewal of your EAD once the year is up.

CanadaSo when did you realized you were "settled" here in the US?
I haven't had my "AHA!" moment yet. I'm still rather homesick, though I'm getting more and more adjusted every day. It really takes time, I suppose. What I'm really liking right now is this six-day mail service, go USPS smile.gif

My father-in-law and my hubby had to work on Veteran's Day. Both my MIL and I were like "#######?" I was rather appalled that they don't give a three-day weekend to basically everyone like they do in Canada... blink.gif

That's fantastic, Lona. I hope they actually do their homework (yeah right!) laughing.gif

I honestly can't believe the number of civil surgeon horror stories that I hear out there... makes me want to get all their names and send them to USCIS with a note that says, "And you certify these people WHY?" Luckily my supplement only cost $40, but that was after I convinced half the office that I wasn't crazy. Jeez.

Dr. Arnold's office must be making a huge killing in the market, especially since he seems to know exactly what the hell he's doing.

Canadagetting a cross border
When my K1 was processing at USCIS I flew out of Vancouver. That time I brought a letter from work stating that I was on holidays for the two weeks that I was gone, my itinerary with proof of return ticket, and my school schedule for the next semester. The immigration officer only asked to see my return ticket and he waved me through.

That's horrible. I hope you get your money back - hell, I'd go there and demand for my money back, since he was being a righteous cabbage-face. mad.gif

I'm so glad the district judge who did our wedding was so kind - he took us into his office before the ceremony and told us what he was going to say. We were really impressed with the fact that he took the time beforehand to check with us about our vows.

Having said that, we picked him from a list of judges taken from the county clerk's office, and we might have ended up with a fire-and-brimstone guy. How lucky whistling.gif

CanadaDS-3025/medical question/POE and AOS timeline question
QUOTE (MonopolyMoney @ Nov 17 2007, 09:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When do we get the DS-3025 back from our interview? We handed in our brown envelope to an officer at the border and he mentioned that we should be getting something in the mail. Is this the DS-3025? What else will come?

We've already been married and Kurtis has applied for a SSN. When do we *need* to send in the AOS packet? We need a little time to save up the money for it. Is there a certain deadline for filing for AOS now that we're married?

Kurtis also applied for his Employment Insurance. Is he supposed to send in his Record of Employment to the Belleville office? We haven't been able to get in touch with anyone about this.

Thanks in advance.

The ROE should be mailed to the Belleville office once they request proof of eligibility - that includes a photocopy of the K1 visa and passport.

Technically you'll be out of status once the I-94 expires, but you're okay to apply after that. Some people just like to apply as soon as possible so that they can get their EAD faster.

I personally got a copy of the DS-3025 at my medical - the panel physician gave me a copy to keep for my own records. I'm not sure what the officer means when he says something is going to come in the mail. unsure.gif

I've had gravy from a packet too and that isn't bad at all. My heart will always be with the homemade pan dripping gravy though.

CanadaOut of curiosity...
What's this about gravy-from-a-jar? blink.gif

Maybe it's just my homemaker upbringing, but I've never heard of it until my father-in-law mentioned it for our Thanksgiving feast. I couldn't help but make such a disgusted face that he was like, "...uh, I guess you don't like that idea." I told him I'd make it from the pan drippings myself and save him the few dollars of buying it at the supermarket! laughing.gif

I don't remember seeing it at the supermarkets back in Vancouver - I'm just wondering if it's something I have to get used to here. Not eating, mind you, just finding it at Whole Foods. laughing.gif

CanadaSSN ???
QUOTE (~Laura and Nick~ @ Nov 20 2007, 06:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So how do you change your name on you SSN to your married name after you get married? Does it cost money to do that? I think I asked this in another thread but I can't remember what forum...lol

I'm not sure whether it costs money to get a name change due to marriage. My understanding is that it doesn't. A copy of the marriage certificate should suffice as proof of the name change (like it does in other instances, ie. driver's license, etc).

Personally, if you were getting married at a date close to your POE, I'd suggest waiting until after the marriage to apply for the SSN just to make it simple. There's no rule that says you have to apply for the SSN exactly two weeks after the POE, just that you should apply for it two weeks before the expiry of your I-94.

Bee and I got married a week after my POE, so by default we applied in my married name. The SSA branch we went to didn't have any issues with that. smile.gif

K1 visa holders have to go into their local SSA branch office to apply. Give 'em two weeks so that your info is in the SAVE system. If you're married by then just apply in your married name, and bring your marriage certificate and your passport. smile.gif

CanadaHas anyone moved their case from Montreal to Vancouver?
Awhile back they used to allow these kind of transfers, but now it's now extremely hard to get cases transferred from MTL to VAN. From what I heard, the only reasons they'll allow it is if you show residency within the Vancouver consulate jurisdiction (Manitoba and westward).

You can always email the MTL consulate to check though. You might get lucky smile.gif

CanadaU.S. tightens screening of Canadians with visas
"Canadians entering the United States with visas will have to scan 10 digits rather than just two under a newly expanded security program launching later in November.

Under the current US-VISIT program, Canadians and others entering the United States on visas must scan both index fingers and have a digital photograph taken by a border official.

Canadians engaged to marry U.S. citizens must also go through the process, and the U.S. has announced that Canadian students and nurses working in the U.S. will also be subject to the screening.

Washington now plans to install a new line of 10-fingerprint scanners at all 311 Canada-U.S. ports of entry by the end of 2008.

The stepped-up biometrics measures begin Nov. 29 at Washington's Dulles International Airport."

Well, I can't say I wasn't expecting the higher level of scrutiny. Kinda glad that we're getting to the same level as everyone else, really - fewer complaints about Canadians getting preferential treatment tongue.gif

CanadaI may have to go back to Canada and refile as a K3
I'm so glad you got that apartment, hun. Get out of there as soon as you can so that you can provide your son with a better living environment. Your brother-in-law sounds like a complete tool. sad.gif

It sucks that this had to happen before Thanksgiving, too. What happened to being, um, thankful for what you have? I'm sorry to say this, but your mother-in-law sounds like she's closing all ears and eyes to what the brother is doing.

If you need any help, please let us know. I'm in the Philly area and if you need to talk/vent I can give you my number. smile.gif

CanadaI may have to go back to Canada and refile as a K3
Hun, definitely sit with your husband and discuss what's happened. Right now there's probably a lot of heat in the air and you both need to take some breathing time before you come to this kind of huge decision.

You've already started the AOS filing and that can't be taken back - think about the cost involved in that, and then think about starting over with a K3 and then proceeding with AOS again. The process could take longer than it did for your K1 - and there will be a lot of stress when you and your husband are separated. Strictly coming from a monetary sense - which it sounds like the major issue is - those application costs will be more stress on you, on top of wanting to save up for moving out.

You're a great parent to your son, and I totally agree that you should let him "be a kid" - after all, they're not going to have these kind of chances to "be a kid" once they're older. I'm sorry that you're having conflict with your in-laws and I wish they weren't as controlling as they sound.

The EAD is taking a few months to process, is it possible that you could stick it out for that long until you're able to work and afford a separate place to live? Aside from that, I don't know what NJ housing is like, but is there a particular area that would be cheaper to live in and wouldn't be a huge commute to where your husband works?

*hugs* I'm sorry if I'm long-winded, I'm just concerned about your situation and hope that you find the best resolution for all of you.

2 more Q,(1) what about if u dont have ur vaccination from birth will he give u all the shot u needed, (2), did he give u copy of ur vaccination sheet to transcribe to i-693 when u get to states.

1) He will, but if you can do it through your provincial medicare it's best as it's free, and the panel physician will bill you for the immunizations. Just be sure to bring proof that you've taken the vaccinations beforehand if you decide to do it prior to the medical exam.

2) I received a copy of the DS-3025 for my own records. It should be in an envelope stamped on the front, "Immunization Records". If you don't get it for whatever reason, ask for it.
