Stupid facebook. I had signed up with my real name and already got slammed with request from people I used to know but no longer want to ever talk to. I'll have to sign up again with a different email and name. The only reason why I'm signing up is the Can/Am group!

You can just ignore their requests, can't you? As far as I know, it doesn't respond back to the original person with a "you've been ignored by so-and-so".

In a similar vein, I hate it when people ask you to join their stupid realtor referral group simply because they think you can "spread the word". Like I have a house to sell. sleep.gif

Thursday night at work, we start smelling something odd. Since I work in downtown Vancouver, I thought it was a couple of kids who had been gettin' into the wacky tobacky, if you know what I mean. wink.gif Then it gets stronger until we're all gagging - then one of the 1-hour photo lab technicians comes over into my department and tells me that a skunk got trapped in one of the air vents and complained in the only way possible.

Luckily it managed to get out, but jeez it reeked. sleep.gif

CanadaK3 or K1?
Hehe, gotta love WoW. If someone had told me "Hey, you're going to meet your future husband on an MMORPG!" a few years ago, I would've told them to go checked out at the mental hospital. Now, I'm completely proud of it, especially since I've met so many couples who have met through the game. :D (Alliance or Horde? Which server?)

I'm rather hesitant to give out the figure of 2-3 months, honestly - that's got to be dependent on season, how your case is presented, which adjudicator you get, which service centre, etc. I know in my particular situation, we managed to get everything before the current clog of NOA1s and NOA2s, and hit several dozen horseshoes on the way. I'd say on average it'll take 4-5 months from start to finish. Still, it's nice to see that there are some cases where not everyone gets dumped in the bureaucratic mudpile. :(

As for the newly divorced thing - I'm no expert, but they probably won't take that into serious consideration. I think they'd be more worried about whether your fiance had filed for a K1 before. As long as you can prove to them that your relationship is valid and honest, then you're going to get the go-ahead.

CanadaK3 or K1?

Their K1 or K3 will take a lot less than 10 months if they are going through Vancouver. :)

*raises hand* Hi, 2 months so far on my K1. Extremely prepared for my public stoning, now. :D

In all seriousness, going through Vancouver seems to be faster than Montreal. I'd also comment that there is a slight chance of being denied entry if you were to visit your SO while your application was in process - but the time that I did it heading through YVR, it seemed to go just fine. Any chance of your SO visiting you instead, if you're worried about getting denied? Despite us being just a stone's throw away, plane tickets are still unreasonably expensive.

Yea, I share the same thoughts with you Amanda - as far as I'm concerned, I've worked my first two weeks and I should get paid! And no, I didn't come into the middle of a pay period, they were actually specific about starting me out at the beginning of one.

My husband's grandmother told me that holding the first paycheque is a common thing to do in the States, but for the life of me I don't really know why.

cat - I definitely belong to that minority. I love commuting! Everything about it - the scenery from the train, the time you get just to center yourself and get into a meditative, thoughtful "me" time. There's just no way that I could ever find peace while my MIL is yelling at the radio tuned to politics and other hot topics like that. I feel absolutely terrible for not wanting to share the same breathing air as she does, but she literally makes me want to tear my hair out after a minute.

Amanda - yea, I definitely hear you about standing ground. I think for me, a huge part of the difficulty about living with the in-laws is not wanting to be incendiary or intrusive to them in their house. I feel very much that it's not my space nor my "home" per se, and there are times (like now) when I feel that she takes it one step further and tries to exert control over us. We love her and everything, but I've finally reached a point where I have control over something that's not in her radius, and heck if I won't let her stick her finger in that pie too!

We had another talk yesterday, which started in her talking about the commute again and assuming that we were going to carpool - I flat out said, "I've told you the other six times this has come up, I'm taking the train." Unbeknownst to me, my husband also went to her this morning and asked her to stop harassing me on the issue because I'd already made my decision. Hopefully she'll (finally) figure out that we're set on the idea. sleep.gif

I don't like getting into political discussions with people, even my friends. The only one that doesn't get heated is my husband so if I have anything to say I talk to him or my parents really. My friends have such strong beliefs that it seems they are unable to listen. So I just shy away from most of it really. I don't like to get combative over things that people have a right to believe.

Yar, I definitely feel the same way. The only two people I can really talk to about politics is my husband and his grandmother. My MIL gets incredibly heated up over minor details in politics, so we try to avoid talking about it at the dinner table when I can't escape. Generally I just avoid the subject altogether, because I never know what response I'm going to get from the person I'm speaking to and how combative they're going to be.

Ugh, how frustrating. I'll never get used to banking in my little suburb. A few months ago, we did a wire transfer from my husband's account to my account in Vancouver - the CSR was really helpful in getting that sorted out, including calling my Canadian bank to get the complicated details sorted out.

We went to do the same thing today, only from our joint account at another bank. The lady there was completely unhelpful in getting the codes needed for the wire transfer, and refused to call my bank when I couldn't tell her what the codes were. So I went home and called up my bank myself. Now it's too late to get the wire transfer done for today, and I have to wait until Monday. Bleh. It's not urgent (just for my student loan payments) but I'm kinda going "#######" right now. Thank goodness it's Friday laughing.gif

Blah. So I have a bit of a dilemma. Don't I usually have one every week? laughing.gif

Dear mom called last week and (knowing how homesick and starved I was) offered the choice of paying for a round-trip plane ticket back to Vancouver for a week, or she would come with my little sister and visit at the end of April. It sounds too good to be true, but there are issues that come along with it tongue.gif

Mom is what you would call a "city" gal, and I'm full aware that our lifestyle in the 'burbs will make her want to gouge her eyes out. I also don't have any transportation, so we'd mostly be stuck at home until the afternoon when I'd manage to have a car. Therefore, she's thinking that she'll fly into NYC and stay there with our relatives for a few days, then we'll pick her up and bring her for a brief stint in PA (roughly a 4-hour drive round trip). On top of that, we currently live at my in-laws' house, along with four cats - it's possible that she could stay at the house, but she's insisting that she stays at a hotel, and I don't blame her.

The very big thing is, now that I'm actively able and looking for jobs, I'm not sure whether I can get the time off to visit her, or to spend time with her if she does decide to visit for the ten days she'd be in town. She's adamantly insisting that I put off my job hunt until the beginning of May so that we can have this vacation time together. I appreciate that she wants to spend time with me (being the eldest-born and across the continent, it's been super hard for both of us). In the same token, I've been unemployed for a good six months with student loans quietly piling up interest, and it's hard for me to justify another month of twiddling my thumbs.

I'll be seeing her in August for a week, so I think I'm just going to tell her to hold off. I just feel horribly guilty for saying that. sad.gif

I've been browsing jobs on Craigslist Philly all day - found a couple of winners, but I'm really hesitant to apply to them until I get my resume looked at by the hubby (thanks for offering, Spirit! I might take you up on it!). Other ads I've been hemming and hawing over because they sound... um, sketchy, for lack of a better word. I'm not keen on doing any marketing whatsoever (I'm a shy lass, I am) and the ads that are promising entry-level positions to gain experience sound close enough to that. I know I sound picky laughing.gif

On top of that, I have to find a job which allows me to commute through either SEPTA train into the city, or by foot. Hard to find such a job when you live in the 'burbs and everything is dependent on the car dry.gif

Oh, where do I even start. I'm sorry, I just have to tell the entire story now dry.gif

So my MIL invited Julia (the aforementioned ex) over so that they could visit and talk about her stay in the "foreign country". She was in England on exchange with the LSE for the year. If that wasn't intimidating enough, my in-laws think the sun falls and rises with her. It wouldn't have been as bad as it was if they'd also invited the rest of her family over (with whom they're extremely close with), but... yeah, it was just her. Oh, and Bee's brother and his wife and daughter also came over. Bee's bro went upstairs to play at my FIL's new computer, so I was stuck downstairs with the girls trying not to look or feel out of place.

Dinner was Chinese take-out, and if you know me, I cringe at the Chinese takeout that my in-laws like to order. My gastronomical senses were severely offended by the butchering of my country's food laughing.gif So I sat there pretending to be completely fascinated by my food, trying not to feel awkward about the whole situation (which I very much did).

I really did try to give it a chance, but... there really was nothing I could talk about during the entire conversation. At one point my whole immigration situation was brought up, and my in-laws were like, "Well Nini can't really work right now" and I was like "...well actually I'm getting my work card soon," and everyone was like "Oh, that's great." Then went back to discussing how the lifts in England were very annoying.

It was a night where pretty much every insecurity I had about myself was magnified... I don't know if that makes sense or not blink.gif And I felt like I should've sucked it up because Bee's family is very close to Julia's and we will see them again and again and again. I don't think it's a lack of tact on my in-laws' part, it's just the nature of their longstanding and close relationship with her family's. Compared to other things, this is really something very little to complain about, but... *sigh* Certainly made me feel pretty icky.

At the end of the night when Bee came home from work, we went out to the local bar with Bee's best friend who was in town from NYC. Having known the situation I'd been in (and him not caring for the ex at all), Bee's BFF kindly offered comfort food, then let me vent for a bit, and then kept me entertained for the rest of the night. Now that's friendship biggrin.gif
