US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionCan I ask for a later Interview date?

Right now I'm not. I'm actually finishing my last semester, so I've got my six month grace period starting at the beginning of September to pay off as much as I can. Now that I've calmed down from the minor panic attack, I don't think I'm going to get into too much trouble, but I'm going to call NSLSC sometime this week and ask them about my situation. We really don't like the idea of our spending another six months without each other, but the thought of facing a tsunami wave of debt just tears me apart. :(

Uh, you realize that the 'grace period' only means that you are not required to make payments, right? They are still hitting you with full interest right now. Which means your principle is growing as we speak.

It all depends on the amount of your loans. Mine are 34k, which means 3k a year in interest alone, which means that unless I can afford to pay giant payments every month, I'm not even going to cover the interest, let alone the principle.

My USC isn't happy at the thought of another 11 months of separation, but on the other hand he sees that watching me have hysterics on a weekly basis isn't ideal either. Torn apart indeed. Everything would be different if he was working, because then he'd be able to help pay it down, but such is not our lot.

I won't be able to call the consulate until Wed, here's hoping I can delay my interview until Dec.

Oh, I'm aware that the "grace period" still means that I'm accumulating full interest on my loan. My debt is at 10k right now, so the interest is not too bad (heh, bite my tongue later for that). I'm hoping that I'll be able to make some payments with a part-time job right now, then work frantically full-time to chip away at the principle. My fiance isn't happy about the separation either, but I think for peace of mind he'd rather have me happier to work at the loan pre-POE than for me to be miserable and frantic at the prospect of waiting for an EAD post-entry.

Crossing my fingers for your interview rescheduling, though!

Are you currently in Interest Relief Status? You will lose it once you leave, and they will start charging you prime + 2.5%. That's 8.5% right now. Have you read the fine print about failing to make even a single month's repayment? Scary stuff.

I need it pushed back to December, by my calculations. Ouch.

Galateia,

Definitely contact the consulate and change your interview time. You may not be able to get it pushed back very far, but I know I was able to request an interview date for August (2 months ahead).

Your story sounds quite similar to mine - now I'm getting kinda worried since I wasn't aware that I would get penalized for leaving the country before my student loans had to be paid off.

Put down "yes, with work authorization, employer unknown at this time". That's what I put down in my application and took that from the example forms on VJ. Saying no is more likely to bring up red flags at the consulate.

You can get a vaccine for chicken pox.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionVaccination
You can definitely get the vaccinations earlier! You only need them when you apply for AOS once you're married. If it's cheaper to get it done in your home country, I definitely recommend it.

The ones you need are MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), TD (tetanus and diptheria) and varicella (chicken pox). If you have immunity to those already, you need to show proof that you've had the booster shots recently or you've taken a titres (blood) test showing that you're already immune to it.

I know personally I got the MMR and TD done at the doctor's, and obtained a sheet showing the results of my blood test for immunity to chicken pox.

Hope that helps you out! :)

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPacket 3 question?
Packet 3 will have your instructions as to which forms and documents you need to collect for the interview.

Packet 4 will be the letter which tells you when your interview is to be held at the consulate.

US Embassy and Consulate Discussiontwo questions about DS-230

The DS-230 Form I got from Montreal is really grainy and messy looking...
Is it Okay if I fill out the form online and print and send it in

Yes, I found the exact version.

Don't see why not!

Liz, for my question 25 I added a statement which basically said "I've been to the US lots, lots, lots of times since childhood and never had a visa under the Canada/US visa waiver program". I figure if they really want to know about each and every time, they can ask at the interview.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPacket 3 Confusion
Hey specialfrances,

Duplicate means you need two copies of DS-156. Does it say send all the forms (DS-230 pt 1, DS-156, DS-156K) on your checklist? I know the Vancouver Packet 3 says only the DS-230 pt 1 needs to be faxed in.

If you don't need to send the UK consulate the DS-156 and DS-156K ahead of your interview, I suggest that you leave it unsigned till then. Since you'll need to sign DS-156K in front of the officer anyway, it won't take any more time to sign the other two.

Depending on when your interview can be scheduled and how long it takes to get a police certificate, I'd tentatively say that you were alright to send your checklist in, as long as you're absolutely certain that you can get it before the interview. No sense in waiting to send that checklist off if you're certain that it's on the way.

Good luck to you!

Yes, let the visa expire. Once it's issued there's no way to retract it.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionQuestion about DS-156K
I think what they're looking for is evidence of your relationship overall. Photos, letters, emails, that sort of thing. I don't think USCIS is looking for a specific form that proves your engagement, per se.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionCan you apply for a police record too early?

I realize you can't get your affidavit of support in advance, per warning on the official us visa site, but I can go ahead and get the police record if they allow me too, right?

Depending on where you're from, some areas (like the RCMP in Canada) also won't issue the police certificate unless you have the Packet 3 letter to prove that you need one.

LonaD, does your passport state in the information part from which issuing office it came from, etc? I know my (Canadian) passport usually has those details in the passport. I'm sure that you can put your answers down on your DS-156 as you've listed - it being issued in a foreign country is perfectly fine.

Bee also made three copies - one for him, one for me, and one in case an RFE was requested from USCIS. I definitely recommend at least one full package copy for the fiance who is attending the consulate interview.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionHow many Emails for K-1 visa?
I would agree that it's not the quantity of evidence that you need, it's whether you can prove that you have a genuine ongoing relationship. Use whatever you have, but stretch it out over the course of your relationship - pictures, ticket stubs, letters, emails, etc.

I'm also planning to bring my original I-129F petition that was sent to USCIS since that also contains a bit of evidence that will help in the interview.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionPolice report problem

Montreal of course. But then, they can lie. That's all I need is to go all the way to Montreal and find out I was lied to. That's why I asked what others have experienced.

When I ask what others have experienced, I'm told to believe Montreal. When I say I'll believe Montreal, I'm mildly chastised for not believing others. I just can't win.

Cool, YuandDan. Thanks.

Why would they lie? Or do you really mean that if they didn't completely understand your question then you may have received an incorrect answer....

I just think they'd lie. Come on. It's US immigration. They could care less if they lie to us. They still get our money.

Maybe you've had nothing but bad experiences and that's why you have such a strong opinion about US immigration, but I'd like to think that not everyone that works at US immigration is out to deliberately sabotage.

This process is endlessly frustrating for a lot of us, but there are always a few out at USCIS who are willing to help for intrinsic purposes, not just because they're paid to do it.

Roughly 22k, if you're including your fiancee's son in the household. Keep in mind you'll need to make 125% of the poverty guidelines listed.

Overall, I think you're good. :)
