CanadaJust curious
I feel like such a schlep compared to you guys! :D

Finishing up my Associate's Degree in General Studies. Worked in retail for 6 years (urgh...) and finally turned to office work last year. I'm basically on call doing confidential data entry for their clients. Moving to the States means that I'll be looking for a job in the office, but I'm hoping to look for something more interesting. I'm determined to find a job that I like, even with my low expectations!

My fiance (the USC) works at UPS West Chester as a training supervisor and manages deliveries that come in and out of the hub. Which basically means, he teaches people occasionally, and watches conveyor belts and people at the top of a tower while being the voice over the paging system.

CanadaWe got our interview date!!!!!! (finally)
First of all, congratulations! :D

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it takes roughly a week to get the background check from the RCMP? I think it depends on which office and whereabouts you are located, though.
~Nini~FemaleCanada2007-05-11 00:29:00
CanadaSo, Packet 3...
So, I know I'm really lucky to get my process through early, so I shouldn't be so agitated... but I can't help it! To boot, I almost attacked some newspaper solicitor when I thought he was the mailman. Poor guy probably thought I was crazy, eeps.

Can anyone tell me what the envelope from the Vancouver consulate looks like? Is it going to be an actual manila envelope or a simple business letter? From what I heard, the package apparently comes from DHL and is couriered to the address, is that true?

Any help would be awesome, thanks!

Well, winds change.

My mom came home from abroad yesterday, and just asked two things: "How much did the ring cost?" and "Are you really happy?"

*scratches head* Of all the people I expected to have a huge freakout, she was at the top of the list...

I'm so glad there are other people who've been in the same boat I am right now, hehe. I'm trying not to think about it too much, and concentrate on my Packet 3 getting mailed to me - if I think hard enough, it'll come, right?

Tinker - sorry to hear that! If you want, you can tell us about your visit. That's what we're here for!

Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate them and they've made me feel better. :)

TracyTN - My mom was aware, even before I was engaged, that I was looking to move away. I really wanted to work elsewhere (either abroad or in the States) for experience and a bit of change. While Vancouver is a really lovely city, I don't think there's much opportunity here for someone with my credentials (and trust me, I've tried! :P) - and then I met Bee.

To add, I love my family and we do try to get along with each other, but it's situations like these where it's painfully obvious that I'm the black sheep in the group.

*sigh*

A few days ago, while I was still in PA visiting my fiance, he surprised me with a formal proposal and an engagement ring. That was a bit of a shock since we had decided to get married with very little fanfare. While his family was aware of our plans, as soon as they found out about our formal engagement they were absolutely thrilled.

I got back to Vancouver on Sunday and immediately broke the news to my family as fast as I could reach them. My family has been aware that we were considering marriage, so it wasn't completely out of the blue. And... it's been really tough ever since.

Over the past few days now, in between half-hearted congratulations, I've been receiving constant lectures about how it's too soon for me to get married, why can't I wait another year, and how I should concentrate on school so I can get a degree and get a better job. My argument was that, I truly felt that Bee was the right person for me to spend the rest of my life with, that marriage didn't necessarily entail that I wasn't going to put my life on hold, and that I wasn't going to spend another year in a place which is absolute misery compared to where he was. To boot, I've been in post-secondary education for 5 years already, and I'm about to receive my Associate's Degree after racking up some debt in the process. I really find it pointless to continue school when I have been struggling to determine a career path, and I'd rather work until I do find something that truly interests me.

Regardless of that whole babble, I'm just sad that my family is looking at this like it's the apocalypse, especially compared to the amazing reception we had from his family. All I wanted was some form of support and congratulations. :(

Hee. I'm also waiting for my Packet 3 to show up - emailed the embassy today. Hopefully I'll get a response soon!

CanadaDS-156K
From what I've been given in my Packet 3, you submit the DS-230 through fax to the consulate, then your checklist, then your DS-156 and unsigned DS-156K and keep those for the interview. The evidence (police certificate, birth certificate, etc.) can be brought to the consulate - both photocopy and original.

My info is for the Vancouver embassy so there may be slight variations. Hope that clears some confusion, though. :)

CanadaUpdate on our Case being processed after Denial
Too bad you couldn't request for another adjudicator to look over your case. Clearly the woman that's handling your case is doing an inadequate job and wants to make it hell for you, ugh.

I hope things get straightened out quickly! I really feel for you guys. Hopefully this will be a thing of the past very shortly. :)

CanadaMay2-4 weekend
My favorite story is when I was in Seattle awhile back, and convinced a guy that the polar bears terrorized my front yard. My other Canadian friends were in tears just laughing at this poor guy who was just freaked out at the thought of visiting Canada. It was mean, but... oh, so funny. :D

CanadaFingerprints
Only people who have a criminal record need to get fingerprinted at the RCMP for their police check... otherwise you should be fine. The consulate shouldn't require fingerprints - I know the Vancouver consulate didn't ask for them. :)

CanadaDS-156 HELP!!!!!
Mmm, even something like "depending on visa authorization" would work. I only left it blank because you couldn't put in a written response in the online form, but I suppose you could handwrite it in.

CanadaDS-156 HELP!!!!!
Hey there,

http://www.visajourn...Form-DS-156.pdf is a good example of the DS-156.

As for the other questions, this is what I put down:

22. When Do You Intend To Arrive In The U.S.?
-I left it blank; depends on the interview.

26. How Long Do You Intend To Stay in The U.S.?
-Permanently.

27. What is The Purpose of Your Trip?
-Marriage and relocation to the United States.

32. Do You Intend To Work in The U.S.? Yes No
-With work authorization, employer unknown at this time.

36. Has Anyone Ever Filed an Immigrant Visa Petition on Your Behalf?
-Put a no. The visa that both of you are filing is a NON-immigrant visa, so it wouldn't count.

Hope that helps you out!

~Nini~FemaleCanada2007-05-19 13:58:00
CanadaIf I may ask...
LD has a digital-style passport camera, so all they need to do is change the sizing in their camera settings so that it prints out properly in 2x2 format. :D
~Nini~FemaleCanada2007-05-22 12:51:00
CanadaIf I may ask...
London Drugs does decent passport photos - that's where I'm getting mine done, but I make sure to go when they're not swamped with crowds. I used to work there (but not in that department!) and when they were busy, it'd be really hit and miss.

I didn't have any issues with the photos when I sent them in with my original application, though I was really obsessive about getting them perfect. :D
