CanadaSOOO why leave Canada than???
For one, I will never lose the "Canadian spirit" in me. I may look like an immigrant, but as a citizen from birth, I've been raised in this amazing country and it doesn't leave the heart.

While it was my choice to leave, I did it because Bee's family is amazing and I knew how hard it was for him to leave. Bee and I hope to move back someday, preferably just across the border as his parents will probably want us to visit quite often. ^_^

CanadaVancouver Medical Review
Great review! Glad you made it through your medical :)

CanadaMissing Canada
I haven't quite moved yet, but I know my fiance and I are already talking about moving to Canada. He wants better health care for us, and he knows that I'm extremely attached to Vancouver (for the food, the weather, etc). The only reason why I'm moving down there is for the change of pace and for his family, whom he's extremely close to.

He also wants to become a Canadian citizen someday, so we've been kinda poking around at sites to see how hard it's going to be. The regulations have almost put him off doing it altogether, but he's still considering it because he's not very happy at what's going on in the States right now in terms of health care and his current president.

Eh, my fiance and I met while we were raiding on Cenarion Circle (RP) together. He was an undead mage, I was an undead priest.

Now we're over on Lethon (PvP) raiding with our friends, he plays his 70 undead mage Usrue, I play my 70 undead priest Llysara. I've also got a few alts kicking around, primarily a mage, warrior and paladin. :D

You can fax your checklist in before you book your medical. The panel physician only sees people on Wednesdays so be sure to take the day off and get there really early. :)

Canadastudying while waiting for work authorization
I was under the impression (reading the US consulate website in Vancouver) that Canadian citizens don't need a visa to study in the United States, but I guess it's different once you enter on a K1?

Canadastudying while waiting for work authorization
Which college are you looking to go, Liz? I bet you can always go to their website and contact an advisor through there. From my experience in talking to an advisor at the Art Institutes in Philly, an advisor called me up and was able to tell me whether my credits could be transferred over or not.

Hope things work out for the best with your mom. *hug*

I think the OP is talking about the timeframe after he enters the States on a K1, but prior to receiving the EAD.

CanadaDoes illegal immigration upset you big time too?

What i dont understand is that north american was built on immigrants...our families had to come from somewhere (unless you are native/aboriginal of course)...so why are people hating on "spanish speaking" immigrants. Someone gave our parents/grandparents/great grandparents etc a chance...so why wouldnt you do the same for someone else. i just hate this elitist mentality.

To clarify the "geesh" comment, it was towards people commenting on hating spanish speaking immigrants, not at you or thetreble. :)

I don't get it either because the attitude towards immigrants is totally different in Canada where it's a mosaic, not a melting pot. I want people to retain their heritage and culture and not "assimilate" like so many other people would want them to do.

And like you, I hate that mentality. I'm a born Canadian but I'll always look like an "immigrant". Maybe I should start speaking my parents' native language wherever I go or put on a thick accent just to pi$$ people off. ;)

Also, I like going into different parts of town and getting "lost" in the sights, sounds, and atmospheres of different cultures. It's like travelling but in your own backyard. :) Okay, not so much where I am here in the U.S. but especially when I was living in Toronto or in larger U.S. cities.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

It drives me batty when someone is insistent on assimilation. North America was built on immigrants - some people need to have more tolerance. I thrive around different cultures - why keep to the same one all the time?

CanadaDoes illegal immigration upset you big time too?

bowflex ,
i'm w/ you 100% on everything you've said.
i can't believe people on this site going thru the immigration process legally, don't second all of your opinions.

It's been pointed out many times in this thread, but for some people like me, having done it the legal way doesn't make me feel special, superior, or proud. I don't see why there should be a correlation between having gone through the legal immigration process and one's stance on illegal immigration.

Definitely agreed. While there may be some resentment towards those that choose to skip across the border, I don't find their tactics being punished by the US government, which is the bigger issue here. I certainly don't agree with the leniency given to the illegal immigrants in the US. I certainly don't agree that the illegal immigrants should feel that they can bypass the law simply because they're looking for a better life in the States, whatever their various reasons are.

I think what Udella&Wiz put up certainly makes a strong point. There are a lot of myths in place about the state of illegal immigrants and certainly that does put a bias on things. A well-written book I read about the US/Mexico border, the Devil's Highway, pointed out that not every single illegal immigrant was looking to become a citizen, or even live there, they just wanted to make some money to bring home to their families, and they were willing to put their lives at stake in order to do that.

If we're going to argue about illegals who cross the border without intent of staying permanently, I do believe that the US government should take a closer look at perhaps granting those a temporary work permit so that they have at least some legal paperwork for employment. Bowflex has made a really good point that the US government is basically promoting illegal immigration if they won't do anything about it. There are various job sectors where the companies shrug and go, "Let's employ these illegals under the table and exploit them because they want to make more money here than they can back home." And the US government, from a political standpoint, won't recognize the issue and won't attempt to regulate that kind of behavior.

Again, it doesn't make it right for people to think that they can bypass the laws and procedures in place. But there are always some extreme cases where some who are fleeing their home country to seek political asylum or refugee status are absolutely desperate and will do anything in order to secure their freedom. And while from a paper and budget standpoint we can say that they've broken the law and we should deport them, what about from a moral standpoint? There was a news story about a woman and her children who were living in the Moscow airport for ten months while waiting for the go-ahead from the Canadian government to be granted legal refugee status. They got to move to Canada, but in a way it was really bittersweet.

CanadaPeople can be so horribly insensitive sometimes
Ugh, Misty. Sorry to hear about insensitive comments. I hate it when I'm faced with people that clearly need to go for "sensitivity" boot camp.

I'm sure everything will be fine at the POE. It seems like one always worries the most when there isn't anything to worry about.

My husband doesn't understand this style of coping. When I fuss and talk endlessly about paperwork and all this ####### it's so I can "get it out", not necessarily that I'm super paranoid or something. I've tried to explain to him that it's a way of working this all out in my brain, but he just doesn't get it. Maybe it's a girl thing?

Maybe it is a girl thing. I know I've talked Bee's ear off about paperwork before.

CanadaHow did you guys meet?
Wow, everyone's stories are so adorable!

Bee and I met through World of Warcraft. Funnily enough, my then-boyfriend introduced the game to me at the release date, but we soon broke up. Bee and I met through mutual friends in the game, but didn't say anything to each other for almost a year. After that, we started chatting regularly, and then started calling each other outside the game as well.

The first time we met, I flew to the East Coast to spend the weekend with him. We drove back to his house near Philadelphia for the night (at the time, it was much cheaper for me to fly in at JFK), then he took me to New Hope for two nights at a B&B. Coincidentally there was an art fair that weekend, so we spent the entire time wandering around the booths and buying up all the local art we could snag for each other. A few of the vendors asked if we were newlyweds because we were absolutely starry-eyed. :D

After a lot of discussion, we decided to file for the K1, but I wasn't expecting a formal proposal or a ring from him. In mid-April I went to visit him, where after a few days we're driving around in his car. Turns out he was taking me to the jeweler's to pick out my ring (we chose a Canadian diamond solitaire, go figure!). The day before I was supposed to leave, I woke up and rolled over in bed to him reading a book and sniffling into a tissue. We started talking, and I turned my head and found the ring box on my pillow. Poor thing was so sick that he couldn't take me to our favorite park with a picnic basket, so he had to improvise!

CanadaNew Canadian Passport Rules
That's great that they're dropping the guarantor policy. :D But I would be interested in how that'll affect us Canadians who are living outside Canada. Does that mean we're going to be using the long form still? Do we still need a proper guarantor for that? I know it's probably in there, but I didn't get clear info when reading that announcement.
