CanadaAsking for a later interview date and how long is the K1 good for
Galateia has had some experience in requesting a later interview date from MTL. I think she emailed the consulate requesting to be placed farther down the waiting list. Hopefully she'll see this thread and throw some info your way. Good luck! good.gif

CanadaDriver's License
I can see them wanting a knowledge exam for signs and stuff, but a thorough driving test? Bleh. I'm hoping that PA will allow me to transfer my Class 5 BC license when I move over. The graduated licensing program was enough testing, thank you! laughing.gif

I'm so glad you got through, Misty. Good on you for being so prepared! I bet those immigration officials felt like they had egg on their face when you went through. Some of them are just so unnecessarily mean. sleep.gif

CanadaThanksgiving
I am thankful for not one, but two amazing families - the one who has raised me so lovingly, and the one who is welcoming me home to my fiance next week.

I'm also thankful for having two Thanksgivings this year. More turkey! biggrin.gif

CanadaGetting ready for driving in the US
Hehe, thanks guys. The worst part about driving in the winter is my fear of getting into another accident like I did a few Christmases ago. In Vancouver slush and black ice, no less sad.gif Otherwise I'm a really good driver, I swear.

CanadaGetting ready for driving in the US
Because I want to make it easy for Bee to put me on his car insurance, I went to get my driver's abstract from the local DSC today. The lady there was really friendly, and I received a printed copy of my abstract on ICBC letterhead on the spot. When I mentioned that I was moving to the US, she asked me which state I was going to. Luckily PA is one of the states that transfers the BC DLs directly to their equivalent (I'm sorry for everyone that has to take the test again sad.gif) and she also suggested that I contact ICBC's hotline to get my personal claim record. When I called their hotline, the guy was able to pull my records using my driver's license number, and he emailed me a copy of my claim report.

Now all I have to do is get ready for my first winter in Philadelphia. I'm looking forward to driving a Honda Civic while barely able to peep over Bee's steering wheel laughing.gif

CanadaPolice Cert Update
QUOTE (Doug n Amanda @ Oct 6 2007, 03:56 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When Doug went to the RCMP Office in Windsor, they told him he had to bring his Interview letter or DS156k confirming that he needs a certificate for immigration....and $25 in cash. I don't recall reading this requirement on VJ, so I thought I'd post just in case.

Yar, that was the case when I went to the RCMP detachment in Vancouver. Depending on where one goes to get the police certificate (whether it be from RCMP, Commissionaires, or local police station) the packet 4 letter may be needed to prove that it's needed for documentation.

On another note, seems like the RCMP likes to charge people differently for their police certificates. I had to pay $40 for mine. sleep.gif

CanadaWill we have to fill out a new AOS?
QUOTE (Cassie @ Oct 6 2007, 05:34 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When we went to our AOS interview, Jerry had received a raise between the time we filed and the time of the interview. We took an updated employer letter reflecting the change. When the adjudicator pulled out the AOS form from my file, he asked if anything had changed, and made notations on the form itself after looking at the letter.

Cass, thanks for that info. Bee just received a promotion after our interview so I wondered how that would affect our AOS application.

As an aside, anyone notice that there are way too many "AOS" abbreviations running rampant? whistling.gif

CanadaCanadians and Americans - do you celebrate Oct or Nov?
My family is notorious for telling me about last minute family gatherings... I'm told this morning that we have a big Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night at my cousin's townhouse. Since I'm moving on Thursday, I've already booked all my free time to spend with my girlfriends *sigh* As a result I barely had enough time to go get pumpkin pie fixings, and now I just saw that I bought the "pumpkin pie mix" instead of regular pumpkin in a can.

It sounds silly, but that irks me to no end. sleep.gif

I'd rather get fat on Turducken and mashed 'taters and gravy than venti pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks! laughing.gif

CanadaCanadians and Americans - do you celebrate Oct or Nov?
One of the stipulations for me marrying Bee was that we had to celebrate both Thanksgivings each year. Kidding, but that's how much I love my turkey. laughing.gif

I'll most likely be celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving alone with my boxes of stuff, since most of my family is on vacation in Hong Kong for a few weeks. Chances of me getting a turkey is pretty slim, because I don't think I could tackle a 18-pound turkey by myself blink.gif

Luckily Bee's parents, despite them being vegetarians, are understanding enough to allow the rest of us kids our bird and fixings. Mmm, mashed potatoes, real brown gravy, brussel sprouts, corn, cranberry sauce...

Canadaentering USA while having pending k1 visa
How long do you think you'll be staying? Judging by the fact that you seem to have very evidence to prove ties back to Canada, I think this is the main thing that will sway the officer's decision at the POE.

The experience I had at the YVR airport was pretty straightforward: Where are you going, who are you visiting, is he American, may I see your return ticket, boy your fiance sounds like a very good man, have a great trip. I didn't volunteer that I had a K1 visa in process, and he only asked to see my itinerary for proof of return ticket. I also had a letter from my work and a copy of my school schedule for the following semester, neither of which I needed.

If you do plan to make the trip down, be prepared to bring your copy of the K1 application - but I definitely wouldn't volunteer it until they ask for it specifically.

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?

Nini, I told my wife there was another Canadian in the Philly area on VJ so she said if you'd like to get together once you're here, feel free to PM me. There's also am ex-Pat Canadian group that meets in Manyunk the thrid Saturday each month. A co-worker whose husband is Canadian told me about it.

Hehe, that sounds like fun! I'll be sure to keep that in mind once I make "the big move". :D

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?

My family is crazy and getting far away seems like great idea to me :)

Same here. ;)

Also, Galateia, you're not alone. I'm incredibly freaked out about moving to the States. We can share worries together! *hug*

CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
Already I'm not looking forward to Philly weather. My fiance is already complaining that it's hot and sticky out, and his family has the A/C blaring all day. Compared to the rather mild weather in Vancouver right now, that's kinda scary.
~Nini~FemaleCanada2007-06-05 12:29:00
CanadaWhy did you choose the US?
Awesome question!

Bee makes more money than I do, so it was more feasible for me to move down there - I also don't have much of a career at the moment, so I'm able to move much easier than he can. When we talked about it, we realised that it would be wiser of us to buy a house in PA rather than in Vancouver, now that the Olympics have jacked the real estate prices up. Also, his mom is not well and he wished to be closer to her in the meantime. While I come from a large extended family and love the city, I felt that the opportunities in the States were better for us overall.

Though, our running joke is that if another Republican becomes president, he's going to haul us back to Canada. :D

CanadaInterview Scheduled!
AndreaK, I don't think it's necessary for you to have a car while you're in the city. If you stay downtown around Burrard and Robson, especially somewhere like the Century Plaza or the Days Inn, a lot of things (including the consulate) are walking distance. I also believe the Century Plaza offers shuttle service to and from the airport, though you may want to check on that - barring that, a cab would probably be cheaper than a rental and parking charges (Century Plaza charges $12/day, if I remember correctly).

I also noticed that my interview was scheduled for 1pm, but I took it as their summer hours. Besides, it'll be nice to have some "ohmygodi'msonervousbutwe'regonnabeokay" time with the fiance. ;)
