There is also Virgin Mobility which has very good customer service. I'm not sure about their roaming fees but their rates are incredibly reasonable.

CanadaGreat news!
As a few of you might know, I was waiting to activate my visa until I saved up enough money from my job towards student loan debts, moving costs, and all that fun stuff. A few weeks ago there was a bit of a crappy incident at work - however, it really encouraged me to turn in my notice much earlier than I had decided. Bee and I managed to find a much earlier flight without too much trouble (or cost - of course we'd booked the ticket before all this happened!) so now I'm leaving on the 11th of October instead of November 3rd like we thought I was.

Now I'm busy with leaving-the-country stuff and avoiding my family's grumpy looks - "What do you mean, you're leaving a month early?!" - and while I adored my job at the store, you betcha that I'm looking forward to sleeping in on the weekends and not having to deal with crazy customers at work! WAHOOOOOOO! biggrin.gif

Oh, and yeah... the thought of being reunited with Bee after 15 months of living apart = pure joy.

I already had my approval last month, Tinker laughing.gif I think you got mixed up with me having an actual interview versus meeting up with them for lunch (which has been postponed).

But sending good thoughts to vanee and mamalovesdada, I'm sure they'll do fine at the consulate today. biggrin.gif

QUOTE (Cassie @ Sep 26 2007, 10:44 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
All I know is that if you want a care package from home, homemade goodies are ok, but purchased goods are generally bad (especially if they are goods that you can get in the US). Oh, and packaged chocolates are definitely considered a no-no. Just my experience.

I've sent tons of care packages before to my friends in the US, and chocolate (with real sugar!) was always cleared through without a problem. Hell, I sent packaged udon and jam which I would consider much worse happy.gif

Last few times I went to visit my fiance, when they asked me what I was doing I said I was visiting friends and my fiance. They asked for proof of return ticket, and waved me through afterwards.

Are you going to be doing a land crossing or flying through YVR?

A medical is only good for 6 months

Isn't the medical good for one year? As far as I'm aware, it can be transferred to take place of the AOS civil surgeon test if it's within the year.

CanadaSaw a Poll on TV last night
I'm a Canadian citizen by birth (Chinese by ethnicity), but my mom immigrated and took the citizenship test - and let me tell you that she worked her butt off to learn the stuff. It's frustrating because I understand where people are coming from when they say that they want immigrants to know the language - I've been in the situation where people have been downright pissed at me (poor retail girl) for not "understanding" them when they come at me with a language they think I understand.

On the flip side, going to a country, especially one with a different set of values and cultural beliefs, is extremely tough. The whole argument of "well they didn't have to move here if they can't be bothered to learn the language" is really brittle - sometimes people are moving because they need to move. So saying that they should learn the language - that might not be the first thing on their agenda. To boot, English is probably one of the harder languages to learn - not making it an excuse, but it's really intimidating.

There are a lot of people out there who understand English, who can probably speak it reasonably well, yet feel much more comfortable speaking in their native tongue. I'm all for the rudimentary understanding vote, myself - as mentioned earlier, voting is often "translated" into other native languages so that the melting pot understands what is going on. Just because they don't speak English, doesn't necessarily mean that they don't know what's going on around them.

/rant laughing.gif (sorry about that...)

CanadaFall COlours have started!
QUOTE (DeadPoolX @ Oct 3 2007, 04:19 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Take my home state of Texas, for instance. Many people (both in and out of the U.S.) think it's "all the same." It's nothing of the sort. Probably the two most famous cities in Texas would be Houston and Dallas and they couldn't be more different. Houston is right by the Gulf Coast, happens to be very warm and humid (even during winter) and rarely sees ice or snow. Contrast this weather with Dallas, which has far less humidity, but regularly snows in the winter and can easily have blizzards.

How far apart are these two cities? About a four hour drive. That's it. Yet the weather patterns -- just like how seasons are experienced -- in them can be quite different. So I'd naturally assume that Alberta isn't all "the same." wink.gif
