CanadaName Change After Marriage...Seeking Answers!
QUOTE (liz_legend @ Oct 19 2007, 11:25 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So then, what do you do if you're moving to the US in Nov, having the civil ceremony in Jan 08.. but your passport doesn't expire til Aug 2009!?

Do you apply for a new one and just go without having a passport for months cuz now you're in the US and it takes forever??

Why not just get tickets in your maiden name until it's necessary to get a passport change? You can always carry a copy of your marriage certificate with you when you travel. Better yet, the next time you're in Canada for a visit, apply in person for expedited processing for a new passport?

From Amtrak:

US-VISIT Fee

Border agents will collect a fee of $6.00 from each visitor. Foreign visitors must come to the border prepared to pay this fee. The fee is payable in US currency, a US postal money order, a personal check drawn on a US bank, a Canadian money order issued in US funds, or a US dollar travelers cheque only, your first born or your watch.

In closing... I'd just like to leave with this one thought/question: My fiancee and I end up arguing far more often when we're apart (such as when we're using Instant Messengers or talking on the phone) versus when we're together in person. When we're physically together, we rarely disagree or have any serious issues. I was just wondering if things work out this way for anyone else here and if anyone has any idea why it might be this way? huh.gif

To quickly derail this thread, you're not the only one. Bee and I argue much more when we're apart versus when we're together. For us, it's the frustration of the three-hour time difference and the separation issues. I tend to think that body language plays a strong role in communication and without that visible communicator, things tend to snowball much faster.

Just my 2c though! laughing.gif

Hey everyone! Great thread!

To start, I'm Nini (the Canuck), always the one to post in these forums. Bee (the American) gives me free reign to do the forum trolling on our behalf, since he doesn't like doing the obsessive research.

Nini is just a derivative of my real name, which is Nicole. It came about when I was browsing through my fiance's cell phone during a visit in PA. All the pictures of me were tagged Nini... so the name really stuck. His name is Benjamin, but after the Nini thing started so did the Bee thing, hehe. I came to be on VJ through doing the Google search for fiance petitions, and never looked back. It's been a miracle and a half since then biggrin.gif

This is the part that makes me slightly embarrassed every time I talk about it... I met my fiance online while playing World of Warcraft. It's such a geeky thing to admit to! We were friends for a year and a half before we decided to take the plunge. Three months later, I flew out to meet him in PA. He dazzled me for the weekend in a little town called New Hope and since then we've been inseparable. Six months later, we filed for our petition under the impression of USCIS's lawl-case reports website and the idea that it would take us at least nine months' wait time to get our petition approved. Luckily enough, that has not been the case!

PS. Congratulations, autumnchik. biggrin.gif

CanadaI130/I485 Concurrent Filing - Already married
The scenario just doesn't sound right to me - after all, there are K3 visas for a reason. I'm not very familiar with concurrent filing, but the major issue that always comes up is proving intent. I'm not even sure if filing concurrently could apply in that particular situation considering the couple got married in Canada and not the US. It's easier to say that the non-USC came over on the VWP and then decided to get married, but how could the Canadian spouse prove that he/she didn't have any intention of immigrating prior to entry?

We were having this discussion about adjusting status today, something to mull over. It doesn't directly apply to your hypothetical situation, but there are a lot of valid points made there: http://www.visajourn...showtopic=94085

There are a lot of awesome Canadian bands though...Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Stars, Metric, Broken Social Scene.

I don't know if any of you are into indie music, but Canada basically rules that scene right now.

Bee is a huge indie buff and was so proud when he picked up the Arcade Fire album. "LOOK HONEY THEY'RE CANADIAN!" laughing.gif I'm not a huge fan of their stuff personally, but I am fond of Broken Social Scene and the lovely Feist. Though, I don't think she's considered indie!

At the consulate they took a full set of fingerprints, but I didn't realise they were that thorough at biometrics.

CanadaFingerprints at the consulate
This is more of a discussion than a real question and maybe I'm missing the obvious point. I find it rather odd that I had my electronic fingerprints taken for my K1 interview in Vancouver, and now have to anticipate getting my biometrics done for AOS. Obviously not every single K1 or K3 gets their fingerprints taken at every consulate, so what's the point? I'm just curious as to why the consulate would do that if it's not going into official USCIS systems... and if it is, then should I anticipate doing biometrics for a re-scan and quasi-grumpy photo opportunity?

Sometimes I know I think myself into circles sometimes. tongue.gif

CanadaHi I'm new - Just wanted to say hello
Hey there! Welcome to the Canada Forum! biggrin.gif (And thanks for the recommendation BH45!)

I met my now-husband online (like Udella&Wiz, through World of Warcraft) and didn't have any qualms about admitting that I met him online. In fact, the only one who did was my mother. She tried to convince me to tell everyone that I met Bee through "a friend" laughing.gif When we had our interview at the Vancouver consulate, the officer told us that most of the couples he'd interviewed had met online... so don't feel too embarrassed!

Laura's got most of the procedure right, and if you do your research well, you'll soon be thinking "I'm so glad I didn't waste my money on a lawyer!". The only thing I would mention is the cost of the medical, which can change depending on which panel physician you go see. Mine was $275 in Vancouver - it'll definitely be more than $100 so do some research on it and ask around for the best one! As for your police clearance, there have been mixed responses as to the cost and validity of it. It can range between $25-$50 and have a validity of six months to a year, depending on where you get it from (RCMP or your local police force).

Definitely save everything when you go visit your loved one - it'll help when it comes to the interview. The consular office might not even want to see it, but at least you'll feel better not throwing away those boarding passes!

Any other questions, feel free to poke a few of us. We're always around to answer questions, whether they sound noobish or not. Just make sure to keep your sense of humor around here (and if you forget it, well IR5FORMUMSIE should still be kicking around as our resident comedian...).
