CanadaRogers to Verizon cell phone Q
The problem with Verizon is that they're on a CDMA network, which means that they don't use SIM cards. Rogers is on a GSM network - in a nutshell, GSM networks utilize SIM cards, CDMA networks don't. The other problem is that any phone company (whether it's Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, or Virgin) program their phones to lock into their specific network, so even if you purchase a SIM card from somewhere like Cingular AT&T or T-Mobile, it might not work in the phone.

A way to get around that is to get the phone "unlocked" for use in any network, in which case you can just buy a SIM card from AT&T or T-Mobile. But even then it's iffy as to whether you can use it, since the phone you're wishing to use may not be compatiable with the network's band frequency.

(Can you tell I worked at my electronics job for way too long?)

Did Vancouver not send you the Packet 3 checklist? That should tell you everything that needs to be taken to the consulate for your interview.

I did a K1 so I know I received a different checklist, but you might also need a police certificate?

Len - the DS-156K is for fiance apps. He might need a DS-156 though happy.gif

I hate to sort of throw a ratchet in the spokes but any Canadian visiting the US is stamped with a B-2, even though w are VWP'd. I have about 5 B-2s. It's a standard protocol now.

Really? The only B2 I received while visiting Bee was from JFK - other passport stamps I received (if any) didn't have that specific notation. Whether it was out of laziness on the officer's part, I'm not sure.

Shotgun wedding?

As an inspector for Canada Customs, it was his duty to ask visitors whether they were bringing any firearms into the country.

One day an American car came through the line, and its driver reported that the occupants were on their way to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., for a wedding.

After the usual questions about length of stay and so forth, the inspector asked if there were any guns in the car. "No, no," said the driver, "it isn't that kind of wedding."

Okay, poking fun mostly the area I'm going to devil.gif

It was an interesting wedding. As I said, I had the flu. Both Bee and I didn't really sleep a wink the night before... so we woke up cranky as hell. Bee's mom bought me a bouquet for the ceremony, but it started leaking spore things on my dress which was not good for the allergies sleep.gif

The judge that presided over our ceremony was really sweet and gave us a "decorative" marriage certificate as well as our legal certificate. We got to go into the courtroom and Bee's family took lots of pictures. We all got weepy at the vows blush.gif

After the ceremony we took more pictures outside and then we went to a Jewish deli for brunch. I didn't eat much of my challah French toast, too dazed biggrin.gif Then Bee went to work for his evening shift (I know, I know) and I stayed at home and watched the thunderstorm come down with the cats. I haven't seen a thunderstorm in forever and this one was fantastically loud. biggrin.gif

For the rest of the weekend we stayed home, since I was still incredibly sick. But we had a great time with the Halo 3 Special Edition XBOX 360 that Bee's brother and sister-in-law got for us as a wedding present. I don't know who squealed louder, me or him! laughing.gif

We're putting paperwork and other stuff off until later in the week. For now we're still enjoying the sensation of "...oh, we're married!"

So, funny story...

1) It's going to thunderstorm tomorrow in the area.

2) What I thought were allergies from the family cats... is actually a bad case of the flu, which I haven't had for the past four-ish years.

I have the feeling that this is going to make for a very interesting story... devil.gif

I personally got my police certificate from the RCMP detachment in Vancouver, and they were very nice and prompt - only took 30 minutes and $42 and I was out the door. That police certificate is also Canada-wide. I'm sure as long as it covers the country it doesn't matter where you order it from.

My police certificate also didn't have a seal... it was a simple 8.5x11 sheet of printed paper with the RCMP logo and a stamp of the detachment where I'd ordered it from, along with the signature. The consulate didn't even blink when they saw it.

While I like that this post was moved to the Cdn. forum, I believe my relief was only that "we" Canadians not all be painted in such a negative manner. Frankly, I find the OP's question/comment not very tactful, and I was and am embarrassed when Canadians show such attitude. Yes, to each their own, free speech, all that jazz, but I get annoyed when it's assumed that because we live right next to the USA, that we should be afforded special privilages. Are those special privliages afforded to Mexican's? They are bordering the US as well.

I also believe this post is going to get bashed regardless of which forum it's on as word spreads.

I'm totally with this, thanks Carla. good.gif

At no point before or during the process did we think that I deserved any special privileges or entitlement because I'm a Canadian citizen. (I'm sure by saying this I'll get the whole "well you got your visa approved super fast!!!1" bash going...) Best to go through the process grateful with what you do have, rather than what you think you should have.

I wish I did have those paystubs. All that got thrown out when I moved to PA. I never thought I'd need that stuff again and now I'm freaked out that they never did an ROE for me sleep.gif

Only thing I have are "call" emails from them asking me to show up at the office. Fortunately they have the company details on them in the signature. When I spoke to the Service Canada rep she said that might suffice as proof of employment.

I really hope this doesn't screw up my EI claim *sigh*

CanadaOrdering an ROE for EI
Nine months ago, I was employed at this rather sketchy data entry place in Vancouver. I say sketchy because I was on call through email, but basically never worked more than 8 hours a week... needless to say my student loans didn't like that, so I went back to my old retail job.

Now EI wants a copy of my ROE from that company, which they never issued to me. See, I told you they were sketchy...

I called Service Canada, and they told me to fill out a request for ROE form, but does anyone have any idea where to send it off to?

CanadaSSN adventures
Bee and I drove out to West Chester this morning so that we could order certified copies of our marriage certificate from the Chester County courthouse and order my SSN right afterwards. Since I was fretting about whether I was going to be able to get my SSN in my married name, I went armed with half a tree's worth of SSN documentation highlighted in the appropriate places. The county clerk who helped us with our certified copies told me that my married name was completely fine and she hoped that the SSA branch didn't give me trouble. Me too!

The SSA branch we went to smelled like pee, which wasn't fun. One of the ladies who'd been behind us at the courthouse showed up at the office, and when she heard she needed to do an application to change her card to her married name she had a spaz attack at the officer. blink.gif Bee was trying really hard not to laugh at her because she was freaking out about how the courthouse hadn't given her all the necessary documentation - all she needed was an SS-5 form which the officer gave her.

We got escorted into another part of the building, and as soon as the clerk found out that I was a "foreign-born" applicant she had to call over one of her other colleagues. The name change didn't faze either of them, so I'd killed half a tree for nothing sad.gif but when it came time to electronically approve the application, they found out that I'd been inserted into SAVE as a Y1 visa instead of a K1 wacko.gif I didn't even think that was possible! The SSA people asked whether the guy at the POE had looked at my sloppy I-94 and put me under a different visa category, but I told them that he was the only one who'd processed my documents and had been the one to lecture me on the K1 details. So they gave me the "well we're going to have to verify your documents" spiel and assured me it wasn't going to take any longer than four weeks.

I'm really happy that the processing itself went by really smoothly, but man did it piss me off to find out that the POE officer put me in the system incorrectly. I'm hoping that it won't be too much hassle for them to fix it, since I can see so many things going wrong because of it. sleep.gif

QUOTE (SonoranSongbird @ Oct 24 2007, 05:25 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I spent a lot of time reading posts on the K1 board before putting our petition together and there are quite a few people who probably are trying to be helpful but get a little full of themselves. I've kind of learned to take their posts with a few grains of salt and just figure out for myself how much weight or credence to give them. Even expletives can give good advice when they take a break from the written equivalent of listening to the sound of their own voice, too.

And that may just be easy for me to say because the worst I was ever on the receiving end of was a few people criticizing the way I answered someone's post because, although they assured me THEY knew EXACTLY what I was saying, they thought it was POSSIBLE that someone MIGHT interpret it some other way.

Hee, I've had that happen to me too. Except that I got yelled at for using the phrase "in my opinion" which to them sounded too ambivalent and unsure.

Don't get me wrong, I think their hearts are in the right place. Just the delivery of it can be a little sharp sometimes. sleep.gif But last thing we need is this thread to be locked... wouldn't that make it the 4th thread locked in the Canada forum? laughing.gif

Now to start AOS (hopefully soon!)

Also I'm confused about the name change - I wanted to change my name but the judge didn't say anything about that... does name changing also differ from state to state or county to county? As far as we're concerned my name is changed already! But we want it to be legally changed as well.

Congratulations, Melyssa!

I know certain name changes differ from state to state - stuff like the groom taking the bride's last name, etc. But if you're just looking to take your husband's name, the marriage certificate will suffice as a legal document. smile.gif

Do you apply for a new one and just go without having a passport for months cuz now you're in the US and it takes forever??

Why not just get tickets in your maiden name until it's necessary to get a passport change? You can always carry a copy of your marriage certificate with you when you travel. Better yet, the next time you're in Canada for a visit, apply in person for expedited processing for a new passport?
