Also had one of those for my birthday. It fell out while swimming in the ocean in Morocco. I could not get it back in right and it was still healing, so the hole closed up. I had a Tiger's Eye stone and it looked pretty, but never quite got used to it and it was kind of hassle unsure.gif

im hoping theres not going to be any fireworks in this thread bcz there are numerous threads where this has been debated on.

No fireworks, it was just a question blink.gif Apparently I missed the "numerous threads" on this topic. I remain fascinated and curious by this religion and culture and want to learn more. Maybe someone could just recommend a good book to me on the subject. I remember one called something like The Muslim Next Door, but don't recall the author's name.

Hey guys,

So, I have an interesting and possibly stupid question. I was talking with my fiancee the other day (were getting a K1), and I was telling her about this delicious Italian recipe that my family likes to make called "Chicken Marsala". I'm sure at least some of you have heard of this. It's chicken, made with a sauce that's made from primarily cream and Marsala wine with mushrooms. Now, when I told her this, she said it sounds delicious but said she will not eat it because it contains wine (she doesn't drink alcohol obviously because it's against the religion).

Now, I explained to her that the alcohol evaporates when cooking the sauce, so there is no alcohol and it will be fine. She wouldn't have it. She refused and said she doesn't believe it's right. What bothers me is my mom makes it all the time, so when we eat dinner together, what will she not eat? I would never make her drink alcohol, but this is different. It's such a good recipe and a lot of other recipes are made with alcoholic beverages for flavoring, like pasta with vodka sauce, hot sauce with bourbon, jack daniels bbq sauce, along with the marsala sauce. This bothers me cause she's gonna be missing out on so much good food that's a big part of our culture even though there's no alcohol in the food after it's cooked!! This seems like it could be considered such an insignificant issue but it's bothering the heck out of me. Do other American-Muslims think this way about this as well?

Western cultures are full of pitfalls for practicing Muslims. I was born Muslim and have lived in the west on and off thoroughout my life. For nearly 30 years, I was married to a Christian man, which required much accomodation to each other's beliefs. While individual Muslims may have varying comfort levels when it comes to haram foods, we have been told to avoid wine and spirits and pork specifically. Apparently, this command is important to her, and she has made that clear to you.

Just curious, It was my understanding that Muslim women are only permitted marriage to Muslim men according to Islamic law. Whereas Muslim men are allowed to marry Christian or Jewish women as they are women of the book. Thanks for clarification unsure.gif I love Chicken Marsala, BTW offtopic45vn.gif

Anyone else here alone for the 3rd and 4th? I didn't think it would bother me and I'm totally kicking myself for not just tagging along and being a third wheel with some of my friends. (they're all married).

We have fireworks here tonight on the beach and I'm not going because I'm stupid. Seriously I can do anything alone. Heck I flew to a totally foreign country where I don't know the language alone! Why do I care about walking to the fireworks alone? crying.gif It's been really cloudy here for, oh I dunno, a month and a half and I swear it's affected my emotions something fierce. *sigh*

Why are you calling yourself stupid? You should just drag yourself out and will probably feel 100% better when you are out there. Sounds like you may be mildly depressed, tho unsure.gif I have battled depression this past year and it kicked my azz, still even with the meds I had to literally drag myself out of the house kicking and screaming sometimes blink.gif

I am finishing up Confessions of a Shopaholic and then will rent it on DVD. Enjoyable read. It's always interesting to see how novels are translated to the big screen. (Sometimes disappointing) I always read the novels first so I am privy to the character's thoughts that they are unable to show on the big screen. I think this is where people have problems with "book to film " versions and don't fully understand the dynamic of these two very diverse mediums. reading.gif

I am home alone and bored, watching a dud of a movie ! It's July 4th on the East Coast !! Last year on the Fourth I was returning from Morocco via a 1 day layover in England (how's that for irony?) My son picked me up around 9:00 pm in Seattle just in time to catch the fireworks over the water, beautiful !!

With this holiday approaching, I have been thinking about it in a different way. What can we free ourselves from today? Some habits that have enslaved us? Middle East and North AfricaI lost my husband today
Thanks everyone for sharing this day with me ! Kat ~ I like your idea of retrieving some dirt from Lahcen's grave. I remembered also that you experienced your loss shortly after mine as well as the other loved ones lost in MENA this year rose.gif I have been seeing a grief counselor regularly which has helped tremendously to process the loss. Also, creating the online memorial was healing and allowed me to honor my husband's memory. I don't know if I will ever receive closure the way I want it. For now it's still day by day, but I have learned that we do not have to make excuses or apologies for our grief. If others can't handle it or want to pretend our loved one never existed, that's their problem, and not a healthy response IMO !

Middle East and North AfricaI lost my husband today
Hello MENA

~It's hard to believe as I write this, 1 year has passed since Lahcen's death rose.gif some of you were there for me on this day and supported me during the darkest days. Thank you again for your kindness and everything you have done. I had never expected to find such support and comfort from people I did not even know from all over the USA.

I have learned so much in this last year. I never knew love could hurt so much. Knowing my husband changed me and allowed me to see life with a new perspective. Loving him made me realize what is really important, things we take for granted and the stupid petty BS we let get to us at times. We have only now to enjoy our lives, our loved ones and make our dreams come true !

I wish our culture dealt with grief differently. Greece and other countries have arm bands to wear to signify their loss. It is a healthy process that is uniquely our own and we should not be expected to "get over it" so others will feel more comfortable. If I was wearing an arm band one day at Starbucks the barista would not have tried to chat me up until I went off on her. People in the supermarket would have understood why I looked right thru them with empty stares or burst out in tears for no apparent reason. Grief is an animal all it's own and made me into a person I did not recognize at times.

Healing is slow but sure and today I celebrate my husband's life and the short time we had together. I move forward with lessons learned from him and his culture. I cherish our memories and I know that he loved me heart.gif

I am thinking of everyone that has also lost loved ones and hope that you are able to find peace and healing. Your grief is your own process and experience, God bless you rose.gif
