Congratulations, Klaire and Martin!

Lucians' second interview is today. I hope all is going well. No reason it shouldn't.

We got our visa on May 28!

I haven't read through the thread yet to see who it is I am congratulating, but congratulations to all who have good news (interview dates, visas, homecomings, weddings, etc...).

That's good to hear, LuciansGirl!

I'm flying out to Vancouver in two days for ours and then we are taking a vacation and then I'm visiting my parents so I will probably not be on line for the next two weeks. Soooo....

Good luck to everyone with interviews coming up soon. And in case I miss anyone's post telling us they were approved, congratulations.

I just go thru the embassy in Barbados hoping to talk to the CO who interviewed my fiance but he was still unavailable. Monica got on the phone and she assured me that it's not the end of the world and not to worry. She said she will forward my emails to the CO and to expect a reply from him this week. She said he will state what else he needs from me and that our file is not going anywhere until I provide him what he needs. If a second interview is needed, I will be there with my fiance. I feel a little better that we still have hope. I will keep you all posted with our dilemma. Please keep us in your prayers....we really need it right now.

Well that sounds a bit more encouraging, at least. You certainly have both of our prayers! If you haven't done this already, I would try asking others who have gone through the same consulate. They would know the mindset of the people you are dealing with perhaps.

Ooooh, congratulations on the interview dates, everyone! Melusine, I am glad to see that Montreal is moving apparently quicker than they used to.

Ours is a week from tomorrow. I'm flying to Vancouver on Sunday!

I couldn't log in and had a helluva time getting the automated system to give me a new password. Now I have an impossibly long password and can't remember how to change it back to something usable. Oh well.

Hi there! They told me to pick it up at 2:00pm the next day. I showed up about 15 minutes early, because I wanted to make a 3:00pm ferry to Nanaimo. I was in and out of the office in 5 minutes or so. When you go pick up your visa, there will be a line of people outside waiting for visa pickup, but you can go to the front of the line and tell them you're picking up a fiance visa and they will let you right in. I made my ferry with time to spare. biggrin.gif

Thank you! That's very helpful. That's probably the same ferry he is talking about. We are trying to do too much on Vancouver Island I think. Catching a 3 pm ferry would kick so much butt!

Congratulations, Meridien, and congratulations and happy reunion to Lucy4!

Meridien--stupid question: what time did they tell you to pick up the visa? We're trying to work out a trip to Vancouver Island after our interview, and it would help to know if we can pick it up the next morning or not until some time in the afternoon. I'll ask this on the Canada branch though.

Woohoo! We got our interview date. May 27. Now please let me get a flight to Vancouver using my Northwest frequent flyer miles before they merge with Delta and I lose them.

JKD, I don't know much about having a cosponsor since it isn't an issue for us, but I believe you and your father would each have to fill out the I134. DS157 is for men ages 16 to 45, something about military service, I'm really not sure. Are there directions for it? It does not sound like it would be applicable for you since your fiancee is female and does not have a son in that age range coming on a K2 visa. They ask for police certificates for every place she has lived for at least 6 months since turning 16, so yes, it would be required. Generally, being an emancipated minor means you are treated under the law as an adult. Whether that is the same in Brazil, and what hoops she would have to go through to prove to the police department she is emancipated, I don't really know.

I did not get anything from the consulate. However, there are things you need to fill out --- basically, the I-134 affidavit of support, and if your consulate requries this (which it probably doesn't) the OF-167. It could be that your consulate is actually clued in enough to send those things to you instead of sending them to your fiancee to send to you. But I don't know, that's just a guess.

Here you go, JKD: Rio Embassy info.

It tells you when and how to call them. There is also a web address where you can download the forms that would be in packet 3. The embassy link may also provide more info for you. It looks like they will want her to mail it back to them, but can she use some alternative like DHL or UPS or something?

Sent the reply while in the UK March 22 and called CSC today to see if it was received. Spoke with a really rude man who told me I will have no way of knowing if it is received or not.

Wow, what a jerk he was. I can think of a stronger, more apt word for it, but I don't feel like substituting Zs or dollar signs for S's. Do you have a tracking number from the UK postal service or UPS, FedEx, or whatever you used to send it?

JKD, you can call or email the consulate (check the embassy information or consulate reviews section to see how they prefer to be contacted--I know it varies by consulate). It can take a month for your petition even to reach the consulate from when it leaves USCIS and then it takes some time to reach her from the consulate as well, so I would not be too concerned about it at this point. You should probably call the NVC (603-334-0700) to get your case number so the consulate can look it up for you. They can also tell you when it was sent to the consulate. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get through except late in the evening. They will ask for your USCIS receipt numer and your fiancee's name and birthdate, or possibly both of your names and birth dates.

Well I think if it floods when the pipes thaw we might have to go home....but that won't be for a few days!

We actually have water in the bathroom, but the sink in the conference room is connected to pipes that froze and the people next door do not have running water in the bathroom so they keep coming over to use ours. Which is fine---we have a men's room and women's room even though there are only four of us in here and we are all girls. Go figger. Now that urinal will get some use.

Spirit, never mind Vancouver, it's warmer now in ALASKA than it is in Illinois! There is a what's the weather like wher you live thread on another forum I use and a guy in Anchorage said mid 40s! There is a big ol' ####### for you. Or he's full of moose #######. Not sure.

I find I can switch between them fairly easily, having lived in countries that use both. I have to do the math if I want an EXACT translation to farenheit, but I know if someone says it is 37C and they do not live in a desert with relative humidity in the single digits it is flippin hot and if it is -15C or below it's stupidly cold. Celcius just eliminates expressions for extreme weather like "triple digit days" and "subzero" temperatures. If subzero only means below freezing, it doesn't pack much of a wallup. Not hard to use both scales, though.

It should be in that envelope you turned in at POE. The directions say to include it "IF" it wasn't done as part of the medical (because the individual consulates can decide whether to require the vaccines at that stage or not---although I don't know if there are any that don't require them). The caveat to that is sometimes they lose your entire medical. The thread that Harpa Timsah linked has advice for dealing with that if it happens to you. We had a similar issue. We did not bother going to a civil surgeon because we figured if they lost the medical, we'd get an RFE for the rest of it anyway.

CanadaCanadian/U.S words & pronounciations
Pop vs soda is a regional thing. I live in the midwest and here it is pop. Because of the accent here, this is the one region that really really should use soda. Not only because, well, it is soda, but with a strong midwest accent, "pop" sounds more like "pap." Eeeeeuwww!!!!
SonoranSongbirdFemaleCanada2008-02-26 15:37:00
CanadaCanadian/U.S words & pronounciations
I think the Canadian "about" sounds closer to "aboat" than "aboot." It doesn't sound exactly like he is actually saying "aboat," but it's just a little closer to that than the way I say it. Less of an "ow" in there.

Pasta so it rhymes with Mt. Shasta has taken some getting used to. I mean, it is an Italian word, and I doubt very much Italian has the English short a sound. Then again, I (apparently) pronounce the name of the state I was born in "N'York," so I can't criticize. I majored in broadcast journalism and had to go through a rather brutal process of learning to speak without an upstate New York "regionism" (what normal people would just call an accent) so I am perhaps more aware of these things than I should be.

CanadaWhat's For Dinner - Part Deux
My wonderful husband is going to cook out on the grill tonight. It's actually the first time this summer. We were out of charcoal and then when he got more and planned our first cookout, it RAINED all day. We will also have sweet corn from the farmer's market.

CanadaWhat's For Dinner - Part Deux
Last night, hubby made glazed carrots and brussel sprouts (really yummy) and we had some leftover pasta from our favorite Italian restaurant. It was cheese tortellini seasoned with fresh basil, garlic, and other herbs (I couldn't really tell what, but there were more than just the two). Unfortunately, it was a pasta special, not a regular menu item.

Lunch today: a sandwich with cheese, guacamole, and lettuce and cucumbers. I, err, already ate half of it. I'm trying so hard to hold out until noon for the other half and the fruit and carrot sticks I brought.

Mmm, I love Boca burgers, especially the black bean burger. According to their website, they do not sell them outside the US. I don't know if someone thinks Canada is the 51st state or they just haven't updated it. There is also a wikipedia entry for them (huh?) and they claim that Boca Burgers got their name because the company that makes them started in Boca Raton, Florida. Not sure why I find that kind of interesting.

CanadaCurrency exchange conversion rates...2011 composite rate
I know this has been addressed in this forum multiple times, and last year I was able to find a link to the official composite currency exchange rate for converting Canadian dollars to US dollars, but this year, all I seem to be able to come up with is current rates and historical rates for specific dates. I know we are not the only ones who have some income in Canadian dollars we need to report on our US return (a survivor's pension from my husband's first wife). Does anyone have a link by any chance? I have tried searching IRS & Treasury Dept websites and VJ already, but I am just not coming up with it. :(
