I can sum up the night I tried to teach my wife pool, in the bar, in one phrase I repeated over and over...

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusFavorite Pictures in Russia
I like this thread, and wish I had better pictures to contribute. But I am not a good photographer, and I don't have anything worth uploading. I have some photos with a story behind them... but that is about it.

Perhaps though, someone can tell me what this is. We took this photo in Moscow near Red Square, close to the WW2 memorial (with the eternal flame thingy). It looks like an old wall or something. Anyone actually know what it is? I didn't know, my wife didn't know, and the people we were with didn't know.

Russia, Ukraine and Belarusk2 question
The embassy did not ask us for our daughter's biological father's signed permission. My wife had the paper giving her father's permission to travel to the US with her. The airlines did not ask for it either. Noone has asked to see the paper so far.

That is my experience. Yours may be different, I cannot say.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusInvitation Letters
I don't remember everything I put excatly, but I did not use any passport numbers. In the invitation letter I don't think I put any personal information. There is an application for that.

I explained why I wanted my mother-in-law to visit and tried to establish reasons for her to not immigrate. Things like her husband, her house, relatives, etc. The basic things you were talking about...

I wasn't concerned about contacting the embassy about if they recieved it because they contacted my mother-in-law quickly, if I recall.

I think my post breaks some kind of record...zero replies from such a talkative group. I think the Russia forum is really a K-1 forum so we few CR-1 folks don't fit in so well. Apples and oranges.

If anyone cares, my wife got her visa in hand within 5 days of interview.

Make a post about how you got scammed, or your that you are having problems with your wife, THEN you will get lots of replies!!

Congrats

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusThe Interview...Russian Or English??
I agree with slim, to a point.

They need to ask questions to find out if 2 people actually know each other, simply because scammers (i.e. people who are planning to break the law) would be less concerned about this.

I do not think the CO should give 2 rat's a$$'s about love, because love doesn't have to have anything to do with marriage. At least as far as the law is concerned. Some do, as was the case at the time my wife interviewed. She was asked lots of questions pertaining to 'love', as were the other girls interviewed around that time frame.

You never know what you are going to get really. Your best information source when preparing for an upcoming interview is someone who very recently had the interview.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusThe Interview...Russian Or English??
Many people who frequent this forum over the years have said that the interview was done in Russian, and they passed. There has been some rumors that doing the interview in English, and not being very good with English, is a negative.

You should really look into alternatives to calling Russia if your phone bill is climbing. There are lots of other threads in here that cover that. Maybe you saw them?

AOS was easy here too. The hardest part was saying good bye to all that hard earned money.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusAmerican movies!
Hollywood is ignorant and stupid. I think that is self-evident.

However, I really think you guys are forgetting alot of movies that were not "anti-Russian". I don't think anything made during the cold-war counts too much, however, the movie Nicholas and Alexandra (I believe is the name) made in the early 70's is a VERY unbiased look at the life of Nicolas the second, his reign, his mistakes, and his marriage. It also gives insight to the rise of the Bolshevic party and the eventual revolution. And it was made in the middle of the cold-war. Everyone forgets these movies, especially Russian people.

There were many movies made in the last 20 years with good Russian people. Not every movie is a stupid as Indiana Jones and the Aliens from Jupiter, or whatever that last one was about. But sure... lots are.

Have you guys seen many Russian films. They make Americans look real good, huh? (rolls eyes)
ChucklesMaleRussia2008-06-13 14:50:00
Russia, Ukraine and BelarusAmerican movies!
Nah... As many times as there are BAD Russians in a movie, there are GOOD Russians in a movie. Well, it may not be 50/50, but I bet if you studied it, it would not be as disproportianal as it seems.

Also... Think about it... in most American movies, AMERICANS are the bad guys. Criminals yes, but still American. You just need to change your perspective.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusGetting Ready...
Make sure she gets any transcripts from any college/university she attended. It is much easier to get them when you are 'there'. The meds and stuff are a good idea. She will adapt (presumably) to our medicines/music/etc., but it is good to have for the first few months, which can be very diffucult.

She probably will not need as many clothes as she thinks. She should save the room for more important things (IMO). Good luck convincing her of that though.

Having done this before, I'd recommend not putting the child into Public school right after they land anyway. It doesn't matter how much English they know. Give them a month to acclimate. Even though kids adjust faster then adults, being in a class full of strangers you can't understand (even if you know English) is tough on a kid.

If they are typical Russian kids a month or 3 will not make much difference to them, because they will probably be ahead (curriculum wise) of the other students anyway. Although the American curriculum does tend to catch up to the Russian system around high school.

And as groovlstk keeps pointing out, ignoring warning signs is not the best way to find "the one," you're only setting yourself up for failure. However, I do have to argue that there are plenty of guys out there more than willing to be a sperm bank with a checkbook. That's why a lot of these girls come here with the expecation of driving their BMW around shopping and meeting girlfriends all day while the guy fills the checkbook by working.

Maybe you don't get out alot, or there isn't lots of Russian/American couples in your area, but I see this ALOT. And these marriages last many many years too. I can think of one couple I know that falls into this category that are going on 15 years. So, I would argue that love isn't neccesary.

Hell, I see this a lot with American couples. Older man with his "trophy" wife, and it's pretty obvious that it's nothing but a marriage of convenience. Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's a rich guy out with his wife, or out with his daughter. I live in a wealthier part of the state though (I don't fall in that demographic, but I don't do too bad for myself either) so maybe that's why it seems so prevalent here.

I agree with Slim: if you're marrying for a trophy, more power to you, and I just personally want to thank you for allowing some of your wealth to be redistributed back into our troubled economy. biggrin.gif There are some *amazing* trophy wives to be had from the FSU, and if it doesn't bother (generic) you that probably the only thing she doesn't find repulsive about you is your money, then go for it. good.gif

Yes, this kind of relationship can work. It all depends on how you qualify a sucessful marriage. We can say the same about all cultures, as you have pointed out here, but I was thinking specifically about Russian/American. I personally have seen this type of marriage more in that area, but I'm not claiming that to be scientific, or the norm. It is just my experience.

So, back to the guy who this thread was about, he needs to be down with the fact that she doesn't love him, AND ALSO be willing to support a 'trophy wife' (IMO), or move on. If he is, c'est la vie, more power to him.

And I like Dutch apple pie.

Is she marrying him for the money? Probably.

If that bothers him, then he needs to leave. If it doesn't bother them, they can still be happy.

No point in judging people. Love is not always the cornerstone of marriage. That is a modern, western ideal.

I was talking to a friend this morning and he told me that one of our friends had gotten an email from his fiance telling him she wished not to leave Russia and hopes he can find his happiness with another Russian girl....she was to have her interview in Moscow in about two weeks.
She gave him no reasons or excuses in her email and will not talk to him on the phone.
I called him this morning and he said on his last trip to her a few weeks ago that she was excited about getting her interview. He said he saw nothing during his visit that would indicate that something was wrong. He's a great guy and has no financially problems.
He was upset and said he had no idea what her thinking was and was just going to do a wait and see thing with her and see if she changes her mind and does the interview.
I think I would see if she was just having cold feet and if I was not sure about that then I would run in the opposite direction real fast like.
I'll update as he tells me more.
Whew, I know his heart is hurting not to mention the amount of money and frustrations doing this process.

bruc

I don't like this situation, and I hope this person finds happiness, as I do with everyone on the planet.

But why post this if we are not supposed to know who this is? Why not just leave it as a completely private matter instead of making us wonder (natural human nature, don't you think)?

Just wait for the conditional greencard to come. There is no other reason for an 11-year old to have a SSN. Once he has the CGC, go apply for the SSN if you feel the need.

SSN is used nowadays for more than work purposes.... If the CGC will not arrive before tax filing or if you want to open a bank account or start a college savings plan you may wish to submit the I-765 in addition to the I-485 when time comes... No additioanl cost other than passport photos...

Yes, I have done all these things. Why can't it wait 6-8 months? What is the rush? My daughter has her SSN now, but it wasn't a big deal.

I went through this... We got all kinds of free stuff in the mail. It is something new (or was) for my wife so she kinda went crazy with it. We still get stuff now, even though she has almost stopped this 'hobby'.

It's harmless, just make sure you use an alternate email when you fill out all that stuff so you don't get over-spammed.

On the other hand I still don't think my wife remembers our address... or phone number... She only has a good memory when it comes to any dumb stuff I have done over the past few years.

Just a hypothetical here guys.... but what if the U.S. and Russia really did get in a fight someday?

Could you "man the lines" against your S/O's countrymen?

I assume the govt. would get all 442 on us and send us to fight in the sandbox instead, but could you do it now? I know there are a few of us on here who trained, at length, to do just that but has it changed now that we have a "conflict of interests" here at home?

I for one could not.

If there was a war declared my wife, the hyper-Russian patriot, would kill me first in the name of "mother Russia"!

I have no doubt she loves her country more then me. She might love bread and butter more then me too... I don't know, but I am sure she loves her country more.

Whatever happens there, I am most dissapointed by America's response. Why airlift more Georgian forces into the conflict? Are we trying to escalate this? Why are we so pigheaded, only seeing the Georgian side? Politics of course...
