US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionContacting Congressman For Interview Date???

no such thing as a US Embassy in Cuba

moving thread to consulate forum

There's no US consulate in Cuba either, It's the US Interest Section.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionContacting Congressman For Interview Date???

To be honest, I don't have an answer for your question.

However, I can't help but think... All the people filing from Cuba were expedited. You got your NoA2 in 2 months. People were wondering why. Perhaps that USCIS knew Cuban interviews take forever to get, ... maybe this is why.

If USCIS approved Cuban petitions extremely fast to make up for the 'long wait' for the interview, I'm not sure how much your Congressman can really do for you. If there were a way to bypass the long interview wait, I don't think USCIS would have put a priority on expediting Cuban petitions.

(Not saying it's hopeless... but it seems to make more sense to me now. If you want to contact your Congressman and ask for help, please keep us posted. I'm sure there are a lot that are interested to see how it turns out. Good luck!) :)

I have to agree with Ann and Aties that NOT "all the people filing from Cuba were expedited." I checked the Cuba timelines again (which there isn't a huge population of Cuba members here on VJ), and 1/2 of the last 10 people with NOA2's (filing since March of 2010), waited for about 5 months for an NOA2 (including the last 4). There seems to be no reasoning to why some are quick, and others aren't. There's really no correlation that I can see to Vermont or California issuing "expedited" vs. "wait just like everyone else" I-129F petition approvals either.

I understand that the US Interest Section in Cuba only reviews ONE K-1 visa application per day, and I'd read somewhere before that something close to 250-260 cases were reviewed last year, which seems to support this. That being said, it would make sense that there's an 8-1/2 month wait for an interview now. The wait time for an interview has steadily increased over the past few years. At the very least, they should update their website, and say it takes 8-1/2 months now, and not 2 months, because everybody truly is waiting 8-1/2 months or even longer for an interview if you aren't all over them to move your paperwork so you can even get an interview scheduled.

Sorry for venting a little, as I know there are many people much worse off than us in the process. We feel truly blessed/lucky so far. I just want to do all I can do to move it along. Good point about how my Congressman would feel about me being in Cuba before, but I hadn't been concerned about it since reading so much about how it is not a problem for the immigration process in general...but I'm not sure about how things might take a twist if involving my Congressman. Oregon is very much liberal though...and I understand the Treasury Dept. has no enforcement for violations either.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to have to sleep on it for a while anyway. I want all our paperwork for the interview to be in perfect order, before even making the request to my Congressman.

Any more thoughts/suggestions/experiences would be appreciated!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionContacting Congressman For Interview Date???
Has anyone contacted their Congressman to possibly get their K-1 visa interview date moved up? Or would this be a good suggestion? We recently got our NOA2, and scheduled the interview the other day, and the earliest date available was 8-1/2 months away! This seems ridiculous compared to most interview wait times. The US Interest Section in Cuba website even says interviews are usually available in about 2 months. I had written an email to them 1-1/2 weeks ago asking if 2 months is still accurate, and their reply came back today saying "The information on our website is correct".

I'm not sure if I'd be beating a dead horse by contacting our Congressman, because 8 - 8 1/2 months seems to be the norm for Cuba right now based on other timelines on VJ I'm looking at. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionHavana interview timeframes
I'd be curious to know how it goes if you give it a try as well. I think you might be a bit "fortunate" to have October 26 scheduled as of today. I scheduled about 3 weeks ago, and have October 24. I see other timelines with November interview dates. Best of luck rescheduling...I hope it works, but please let us know so we can all continue to pay $11 for 8 minutes of time...I agree it's a BS scheduling system, especially if you call back with 4 minutes left on your PIN, and they tell you to purchase a new PIN because there's not enough time left to schedule with your current PIN. Frustrating...but at least you have a date now, and congratulations.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionAsking for Havana interview time to be moved up IN PERSON at "consulate"
Hi Brian,
I’m assuming you called the correct visa interview scheduling number (1-866-374-1769), and purchased a PIN# for the call. I’ve not heard of K-1 visa interviews not being scheduled, in fact another Cuba member on VJ (Adelante2010) just scheduled a K-1 interview yesterday. I know there are other types of visas that they aren’t scheduling interviews for however.

I did see that you listed the Armenia consulate though, and perhaps that has something to do with it. I have no idea how you even go through them, but I see a few people do list Armenia as their consulate. Is it the same US Interest Section as for the Switzerland Consulate?…Shared building?

You should get a snail mail letter from the National Visa Center any day now (maybe a week by my timeline) containing your new case # for Havana. They don’t send an alert to your email like USCIS does. If I recall correctly, this is definitely required to schedule the interview in Havana. I believe it’s the first question they ask. We called the NVC (603-334-0700) about 5 days after USCIS approved the I-129F, and obtained our new case # starting with HAV over the phone…It probably saved a week+ vs. waiting for snail mail. I called early, and got a live, helpful person first try.

Good luck with scheduling in person in Havana, and your other timing questions…I’m curious as well. I will be there in two weeks, and planned to do the same. Please share what you find. Specifically, I’m curious about how current medical, and police records need to be, and if we need to wait a few months to time it closer to our October interview.

OK - after thinking a bit, and sleeping - I'll suggest this -

Since yer in a K-1, yer at the whim of the entity in Cuba (US Special Services)
but
spousal visa type, CR-1/IR-1, they have the document intake for the immigration visa, the DS-230, that has all of these civil documents (sans the single certificate) that you've mentioned.

Here's a really strong suggestion - if you do it, report results back, it'd be cool (for you and other folks chasing Visas in Cuba) -

Call into NVC, ask to speak to a supervisor, ask specifically about the expiration / validity of these documents for Cuba. He / she may not know, exactly - and if that's the case, ask about getting a Visa Specialist on the phone.

Good Luck !
---
PS - I mentioned yer portal, solely so that you could find and contact others who have done the K-1 interview this year in Cuba - it's still up to you to contact them (via PM perhaps?) and ask them, directly.
---
PPS - IF you get 'the answer' - hey - edit the Embassy Info page for Cuba, add in the information you've gleaned - helps those coming up behing you..

Thanks for the suggestion Darnell…I hadn’t thought to contact NVC rather than the US Interest Section in Cuba…K-1’s have such a short stay at NVC, I’ve not studied their functions/capabilities much…and basically pretty much forgot about them.

I took your advice, and contacted NVC today twice…Unfortunately, I had no luck…even after asking for a Supervisor and Visa Specialist…I was just flat out told that our case is in Havana and there is nothing they could tell me about that “consulate”, and I will need to contact the US Interest Section in Cuba for more information. Go figure…we have to call Cuba to find out about US policies.

Oh well…I tried to get something concrete, but we do feel more secure with our document timelines now after all the input from everyone. Thanks. I encourage others to email the US Interest Section in Cuba the same questions…maybe…eventually…we will know.

Thanks again everyone, and best wishes.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBirth, Police, Single Status, Medical Document Validity

I have these documents because I was recently married in cuba and brought them just in case I would need them and if you read them it does have a date on the birth certificate with an expiration and on the police record it says expires in 6 months. In addition Iam perfectly aware those documents are not of any good anymore but my process is different from yours because I will issue new ones at the NVC stage! Listen, I was just trying to help in giving you some info you can do what ever you want.

Erica y Pavel,

I’m sorry that I’ve obviously offended you guys. We sincerely appreciate the advice, again sorry. I was basically looking for documentation of the validity period for these documents as far as the US Interest Section is concerned. The 6 month expiration that is shown on your Cuba Police Report means nothing to the US…The US goes by their own guidelines. I just didn’t know which document you were referring to when you replied…I was thinking maybe everyone on here could have it on a black-and-white copy for support.

We’re thinking we’ll be pretty safe obtaining these documents at this stage (already in the works), but this has driven me a bit nuts over the previous months waiting and wondering when is too early or too late to obtain these documents. I’ve researched a lot on VJ and elsewhere, and time frames vary from 30 days – 1 year…each consulate has their own requirements...We just happen to not know what those requirements are at the US Interest Section in Cuba. We were trying to help as well.

Peace,

These documents are valid only for six months I have them and they do state it at the bottom of the form!

Erica y Pavel,

In addition to which form states this, I was curious why you would have these documents already if your NOA1 was issued June 2011. I don't think there is much of a chance for your interview to happen in the next 6 months, but maybe you will be lucky, otherwise you will need to obtain all of these documents again if the 6 month validity is indeed correct. Thanks again.

Erica y Pavel,

On the bottom of what form? We don't see this anywhere. All of these documents originate in Cuba, and the the US Interest Section in Cuba doesn't necesiarly need to go by the expiration dates that Cuba specifies. Thanks.

Beau and Digna you are right Cuba is definitely an unique and complicated country lol. I believe the time lines you have are some what correct we had our interview which he has approved thank god and i believe he got his papers way before the interview..birth certificate its fine and i believe the single status and police reports are good for 6 months so your timeframe is good...schedules for the medical are crazy so get him asap done k...good luck..and if you have the time and resources i learned that someone actually got an earlier interview by calling the 1800 number..

Laughing silently...(ha ha)...We tried to advance our interview many times earlier by calling the 1-800 number, as I've seen it's possible for some, but to no avail for us. At this point, we're letting it be what it is. I'm headed there mid-August and again for the interview. We've got the medical already scheduled for late September. I thank you very much for letting us all know. I wouldn't have expected a medical appointment would be hard to get, but apparently it is. One question though...Do you know if your fiance filled out very old forms that the US Interest Section in Cuba gave him (1998+), or did you guys fill out the most current forms? Thanks Claudia.

Here's a recent approval, perhaps you can ask them about it?
http://www.visajourn...le.php?id=86467

and remember, click yer flag - it takes you to yer country portal, can study much there.

Thanks Darnell,

I go to the Cuba portal quite regularly, and I know Claudia and others on the Cuba portal will respond with what they've experienced...but I'm thinking none of us in our small Cuba portal really know for sure about the validity duration of these documents, and we just have to take a chance with this, but that's not how I like to work with something as important as this for all of us here on VJ.

I know other countries have their unique "things", but the US Interest Section in Cuba website says that we MUST have all the documents that I've listed above, before we can even schedule an interview, which is currently 8-9 MONTH AWAY! In reality, I know none of us have all of these items complete prior to scheduling an interview, but if you call 5-6 times at $5 a call, they may schedule an interview...sooner or later.

We can follow instructions if they are given, but we don't know what to do if they conflict so much!!! Included in our Packet 3 is form I-156K obviously, but it's the March 1998 version!!! Should we fill out the forms they gave us by hand, or download the current version to fill out? The I-156K specifically says "previos editions obsolete" (1998?)...I could go on-and-on-and-on-again...ha ha.

Thanks again Darnell...

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBirth, Police, Single Status, Medical Document Validity
Hi All…We’re hoping for some help, and peace of mind.

Our K-1 visa interview is scheduled for October 24, 2011 in Cuba, and we’re wondering if it’s a problem for the US Interests Section in Cuba SPECIFICALLY for us to have the following documents issued to us as of today’s date (July 21, 2011)…a little over 3 months before the interview:

1) Birth Certificate
2) Certificate of Single Status
3) Police records
4) Medical Exam

I haven’t been able to confirm how long these documents are valid for at the US Interest Section in Cuba. I believe the Birth Certificate is valid from birth until death, and Police Records are valid for one year, and the Medical Exam is valid for one year. I have no idea how long the Certificate of Single Status is valid prior to the interview. I understand that the US Interest Section in Cuba won’t pay any attention to the expiration dates on these documents issued by Cuba, but will go with their own guidelines…(Whatever they are…and never reply to when you email them these questions).

Have other recent K-1 visa applicants in Cuba, obtained these documents further out from the interview than 3 months? I hope we’re not jumping the gun, but I want to make sure everything is accurate with these documents well in advance of the interview…for example when we obtained Birth Certificates for her, and two sons…all 3 had errors, and it took some time to correct this.

Any advice, knowledge, or experience would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, and best wishes to everyone on here.

US Embassy and Consulate Discussionmedical exam

You pay after the visa has been issued. When his exit permit is processed. Wow- I am impressed that he completed the exam already! Usually, that is the most annoying part.

I agree with Sarah & Michel, that in the past you pay for the medical with the exit permit (carta blanca). I'm not sure, and I'm so confused about if/when you need to pay for the medical at all after January 14th, with the new policy stating that exit permits aren't required after that date. The "policy" is never easy in Cuba, and will vary day to day for a while now with the "newness" I'm sure...just depends who you ask, and how (much) I think...ja ja.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionAffidavit of Support confuses me!
I always read people asking about this sort of thing but I read so much on here and I end up getting confused.
Ok.
It's about the 1-134 affidavit of support.

I know right now that I am not even close to meeting the minimum requirements so I am having my parents co-sponsor. What I'm confused about is should I just fill out one but not really bother with providing evidence for myself since I would just be proving that I can't support us on my own? And then have my parents fill out another and THEY include evidence. Like do I need to even bother with getting bank statements, etc for myself?

I don't know why this part confuses me so much, blah!

This is ridiculous.
I don't know what to do if my manager can't do it and I really don't think this "The Work Number" thing is going to work.

Does anyone know WHY my manager can't do this? She would be happy to. She also explained that she can't even give any references if someone calls about a former employee, she has to tell them to call someone else. This doesn't make ANY sense, how would a complete stranger know how good an employee is? Just based on how much they worked? She said it's a stupid system but I don't know if I can get her to sneak around it. Is it some law?

*Stress*

Employers do this protect themselves from bloodsucking parasitic attorneys. These parasites have been known to SUE employers who lay off or fire employees after writing them an employment letter. It doesn't matter that these letters do not constitute a lifetime guarantee of work, the parasite wants a settlement to pay for his bass boat. The letter you get from this website will likely not meet the requirements of employment letters

Not to worry. Employment letters are optional. If you can verify your employment with w-2s and/or recent checkstubs

Thank you!! This helps. good.gif

Go into the Employee section of the website to get what you need. Your manager may have to give you your employer's code number.

This site is a service that your company uses for basic personnel matters.

Your manager is just doing as they are instructed.

I did that. I have the employer's code number. I have all of that.
I put the information into the site and as I said they just give me a printout that I give to the person requesting my information (USCIS) and THEY have to put in some codes and my SSN to get my information. I can't get my own information!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionUnusual delay at the embassy
Thanks!
I agree this was an extra long and often frustrarting wait. Maybe my experience will help someone avoid it.
Looking back I should have:
Talked to my lawyer more often, weekly updates at least, assuming they will priioritize your petition because you paid them
is obviously not the way to go.
Started my paperwork/records/medicals early, especialy the foreign records which can be very difficult or slow to aquire.
I should have made contact with the embassy when I first suspected trouble, it might have saved a lot of anxiety and time.

All of this information is easily available here on VJ.com and people who come here have more hands on knowledge then folks
like me, who have hired a firm to handle the entire process. I first came here in 2005 and I became fairly familure with the immigration process
however I did not apply it to my own petition, I simp,y took comfort in others success stories.

At this point, I'm just going to take a breath and enjoy the successful aquisition of an interview. I will be getting a list of all documents
my lawyer has and apply what I have learned here to making sure, he has packaged everything we need prior to the interview ^^

I can't thank you guys enough for picking me up and giving me some direction. good.gif a lot of people here wont ever know they helped me get back in the game.
Thank you smile.gif

Hi,
I just emailed the embassy, without the BKK number, but with everything else asked for in the responder, I didn't get the auto responder this time so maybe that's a good sign.
it's the best I could come up with at the moment. I say the NVC have no record, because I was able to use their automated voice system, and it responded, no record of my USCIS code. I've been trying to reach a person there most of today.
Sheesh if a person could simply look at the files and tell me, it's gonna happen, or its not gonna happen. either way I'd be better off.
Thanks for all the advice Qbertz, I can't be too angry not having that number is more my fault, I could have called anytime back in march and had it. I trusted in my lawyers experience to handle everything I should have followed up. He didn't actualy do anything terribly wrong, we all make a few mistakes, however I can't help regretting or dwelling on the last 3 months lost to blunders.
On a brighter side, My Fiancee was in better spirits today, not singing, but at least laughing, maybe going to yak yak at the folks at the lawyers office is putting her there. She doesn't really enjoy herassing anyone, but at this point, I wont stand in her way.

It's after 12:00EST now so I wont be getting through to them today, I'll email my lawyer, he should be awake now and have the BKK code as well.
If someone reads my email, I may not even need it, "here's hope". Thanks
Best regards

Thank you all for your advice, in this thread and in PM's.
I back tracked the paper trail, and contacted the USCIS, who of course sent me onto the NVC I have had no luck contacting them
either by email or phone they seem to be very busy right now.

So as of now, my plan is attempt to contact the embassy, which is where I started out and keep trying till someone answers my emails even though I do not have the NVC code.
Since the NVC has no record of my petition apparently. My fiancee is going to the lawyers office today, to tell him EXACTLY how she is feeling right now, better him then me I think.
At this stage of the process I personally can't see how it would be wise to fire him and start over. If I can simply make contact with someone at the embassy, who knows where
we are in the schedule, we would be fine. I know it shouldn't take 2 months to send an interview letter so someone had to make a mistake somewhere.
I'm also going to mail my congressman this seems well outside of normal embassy practice. I need to know who has my petition, and why they still have it.

Has anyone had to contact the BKKUS embassy by phone before? and if you have, could you please post or PM me the phone number.
I can't even bring up the web site right now.

I have more patience then moss but waiting hasn't produced. Any advice, or course I may be overlooking would be appreciated.

Awsome thanks to you all, I have a direction, which is a lot more then I had this morning.
I'm just going to not wait for my lawyer anymore and get to the bottom of this.
It's the not knowing thats the hardest I can wait another year if need be, this not knowing is bothersome.
Best Regards, Luck to you all

You are in my prayers. I pray that you can get this resolved soon. It's no fun being in immigration limbo!

Well you have helped remind me never to lose hope. I called the system, they reported no record of my petition? I double checked the #'s and still nothing,

I logged into the USCIS status online and this is what it says:

Application Type: I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E)

Current Status: Approval notice sent.

On March 13, 2007, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this I129F PETITION FOR FIANCE(E). Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service.

So obviously there should be a record blink.gif

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionUnusual delay at the embassy
Hello,
Thanks for the ideas. I have tried to contact the embassy through the immigrations email, and attempted to locate all phone numbers without any luck with those I found.
One said I could pay 20.00US for 3 calls to the embassy help line but that link was dead.
The email auto responded needing a code I don't have, which I think was assigned when my paperwork was forwarded to the embassy, or when packet 3 was submitted.
a BKK-###. without this code, the auto reply said my emails would be essentially ignored.
I think I will need to get this code from my lawyer if I can get it anywhere. Then I can email the embassy and ask for information I hope.

Our twice daily phone conversations have degraded to a depressing rehash of "don't worry", or "I'm sure soon everything will be fine" statements.
I need to find an answer to the unkowns or we'll just continue on in this miserable limbo.

Thank you for your replies
Best regards
