We're still getting mail addressed to the former resident of our apartment... his name was Cornelius Dirk Kop. I'm not kidding. I couldn't make up a better fake name if I tried.

I just wanna send a postcard with a Hai on it or something... I'm not really into all the fancy-schmancy verbosity-laden theme-driven schemes.

Can I just send a post card?

 Yes! Absolutely! Feel free to just send a post card!

Awwww. I was thinking this would be really fun to participate in but I don't want to put my full name out there..... I would have gone with "Krikit", though. :hehe: I know I have sent and received postcards using 1st names only, but are you guys saying that the USPS won't deliver if there's no first and last name? Posted Image

I was also put off with the "control-freak" type input. Sorry. Posted Image

I didn't think they would deliver to just first names, but if they do then that's great! :star: A month or two ago I was getting stuff from Canada (from the government no less, about EI) in my maiden name, they wrote a big question mark on the envelope, so that kinda scared me. lol I'm in an apt building and we just have one area where all the mailboxes are though... I've never actually seen or talked to my mailman/woman unfortunately so I have since had my maiden name added to the label on the box.

I'd be fine will just first names, depending on what people think will work, and what they're comfortable with. I guess that's something that could definitely be up to everyone's individual discretion and mail experiences. I don't want anyone to feel pressured, or for it to be unfun for anyone! :) I know when I was in college I sent a few things back to my parents addressed to "Mom and Dad (lastname)" and they got them!

For anyone else wondering too, I really don't want a lot of rules on this. Just a fun random monthly draw of names, and postcard exchanges. If you want it addressed to your VJ name, or just first name, that would be fine! And if you don't want to take part in themes, that's also fine! :)

I do think this will be really fun, and I'm grateful so many people agree and have shown interest!! I just don't want anyone dropping out for reasons like that. It makes Sir Finnegan Walter O'Malley sad :(

Well there's no obligation to do themes if you don't want to. You definitely don't HAVE to do the theme. It's just for people who need or want some inspiration on what to send out. But I know you also weren't sure about participating once a month anyways, so phooey on you :P LOL

Maybe I can put the postcard themes in my siggie each month so that it's easy to access and a good reminder! ? yes/no?

haha, I wrote that before reading lgg's post. Thanks for reposting the thingie Ant! lol ;) I was thinking about posting the email address in my siggie, but I didn't want to get spammed

uh... what else... oh yeah! I was thinking future themes could include writing limericks, haikus, favourite quotes.. etc.. hahaha... ahhh this is gonna be fun!!!!

Oh, and the list is alphabetical ;) You get to stay first Ant! lol!

I also like the idea of writing VJ names on the post card as well, Ant. I'll give all necessary info with the contact info.

Also, re: themes, I think an EARTH theme for April's upcoming Earth Day would be fun. So anything landscape/nature/flowers related. This one should be easy :) And for writing... hmm... Write anything, but you have to use the word 'sun' at some point in the postcard. :star: lol How's that? B-)

For anyone interested right now, here's my list as of this morning (This is the most updated list, I'd been hearing from people throughout the day yesterday, so I will post a new list tomorrow, just so this thread can focus on ideas, and not lists!):

I don't mean to sound like a control freak or anything, so I'm really sorry if I do... please let me just post the list though. :) It'll avoid confusion, and just makes it easier for me that way. Then I know my list is current based on people contacting me, and I don't have to make sure it matches another list in the thread, which may or may not be right as well (for example, right now my list is different than the updated list that was posted... lol). I am keeping a list of participants on my computer, and keeping their addresses in a separate contact folder as well. Don't worry, it's all under control. lol ;) I can post an updated list of participants a day or two before each draw of the month. And if people want to opt out of or jump into that particular draw they can. I will make sure each participant receives an equal number of postcards.

As of right now, I have 14 confirmed participants (confirmed as in, they've shown interest and I have received contact info). There are also 7 other people who said they would like to, but I have not received info from (you know who you are. lol). Just a reminder you can either PM me or email vjpostcards@gmail.com :) But no worries. Like I said you have until April 5th.

I'm so glad you guys are all on board for this!! I use a lot of emotions! :star:

Here're your questions Ant with answers bolded :)

6) What are we supposed to write on the postcards? Anything goes? Something specific? Leave it blank? I say anything goes (but see below re: themes)! Friendly, of course :P LOL
7) How about if we do a "writing topic of the month", or something like that, which we can all commonly write about on our postcards, to make things more interesting? You can choose the first topic, Ashenflowers, since this project was your idea... This might be actually really fun! It's a great idea! hmmm... let me think about a theme and get back to you. ;)
8) Umm..On what we will address each other, name-wise on the postcards: I think we need first/last names too, when you give the contact info, ashenflowers...Lol..As I don't think that the USPS/Canada Post will deliver using our VJ names....(lol..mine won't deliver to Ant+D+BabyA....). So make sure to include your first and last name too, when you sent your contact info to ashenflowers... Yes, people have been giving their first/last names :) If they haven't, I have been asking. I want to make sure everything gets where it needs to go! My mail'person' barely accepts my maiden name, let alone 'ashenflowers'
9) What type of postcards do you want to send? Or is it, anything goes here too? Or would you like a specific theme? I think anything goes, but if you can find one related to the monthly theme, all the better! But no pressure. Some people might have access to a better variety of postcards than others. lol I don't want to put too many restrictions, but themes might spark creativity and make it more interesting. :)

Sorry for the double post, I just wanted to clarify something for everyone who's curious....

That would be cool!

Any idea how much postage it costs to mail something from the US to the UK? Probably not too too much I'd think.

I have a friend who lived in Pakistan for a while and that was a confusing postage situation. I think I spent $15 to send her a envelope with a little extra thickness once. Not so cool!

I believe it's 98¢ internationally for something like a postcard :)

So, I was gonna PM this to everyone, but then I was like 'dang, that's time-consuming' cause I'd have to do one at a time, so I figured I'd post it here, and hope you guys will answer. LOL If I don't hear from some ppl I will PM them before I do the 1st draw.
Hurray! I'm excited to start this. :)

Here is "Generic Postcard Msg Questionnaire Thingie #1":

To help me figure out how to facilitate the best way to approach this task, please answer the following Qs for me. Either just reply here, or feel free to PM me, or email VJPostCards@gmail.com (yeah that's right... I set up a separate email for this... I'm hardcore).

Thanks so much!

* Are you willing to send postcards to both Canada AND the U.S. (and possibly elsewhere if other VJers get involved as well)?
* How long do you want to participate in this? Once a month until it dies off, or would you prefer to only send one or two postcards? Please be specific.
* When is your birthday? I'll let the sender know during the draw of the month of your birthday, and maybe you'll get a 'special' card!? ;)
* Do you prefer to be contacted via email or VJ PM? Please PM me your email address if you prefer that.
* Please PM or email me your mailing address. If you will be moving soon, please PM the one that would be current for the month of April. I will let everyone know ahead of time when the next random postcard draw is (likely around the 1st of the month), and future address changes can be made any time.

* Please know that I will give your address to NO ONE except the person(s) randomly selected to send a postcard to you. These 'guidelines' and method of play may change at any time. I am not held responsible for any postcards that you receive that you don't like. :P
* Please let me know if you have any suggestions!
* P.S.: Yay!
* P.P.S.: DON'T post your address in this thread. PLEASE only PM me or EMAIL your addresses to me. Thanks!

I liked how it held onto the lid and i could just drop it into recycling...have not found an identical one here :(

I don't know if it'd be identical to the one you're talking about, but check out the Pampered Chef can opener. It's all kinds of awesome. I really miss mine (it didn't make the trip to the U.S.).

Chipper was about 2 and a 1/2 yrs old. I got him in Nov. of '07. He was a lover of peanuts, cashews and lettuce, and paper towels and kleenex. lol He only really bit me hard once, and that's when we were trying to get masking tape out of his fur in January... We had used it to hold up his water bottle in our makeshift travel box during our road trip and it didn't work so well.

Sorry about the house Krikit. It can be heartbreaking once you get your mind set on something and start envisioning your new life there (at least that's what I do.. lol get ahead of myself a bit). Flames is right though. It just means that the 'one' is still out there.

In other news... my hamster died today. :crying: He was just old. We had actually taken to calling him Stinky/Silly Old Man. lol I'm sad. He even moved with us on our cross country drive from Canada. Sigh. We buried him under the apricot tree in my in-law's garden.
His name was Chipper.

I need a quick opinion on this:

I'm writing my resume. Putting "Woodstock, Ontario, Canada" is too long.
Should I just omit the province and leave it as "Woodstock, Canada"?

And also to the people who live in California and have taken the driving portion of the test recently:

Do they test you on parallel parking? If they do, I need to practice that soooooooo badly

Maybe just Ontario, Canada? I dunno... or Woodstock, Ontario? If you have anything else showing you're from Canada on your resume.

I haven't gone for the driver's test yet. Waiting on GC/EAD/whatever. lol

I feel your pain on the house hunting. We're not in the 'house' market yet, but even just apartments are ridiculous here. For example... in London, ON I rented out a HOUSE with two roommates... cute house with a BIIIIG yard, upstairs loft, nice neighbourhood, etc... for about the same amount we're paying for our ONE BEDROOM apartment in Santa Barbara. And it's not a 'fancy' apartment, by any means. I'd call it average. Next year we might end up moving to another town depending on our employment situation. There are cities about 30 mins away from here that are much, much cheaper. Another thing we could've considered originally had we know my husband's boss would turn into an jerk.... :bonk: Now we're stuck in a lease.

Hang in there Huggles :luv: Something will come up! On the plus side, you're still getting calls and interviews. That's great progress. My husband has had very few leads in his nearly 3 months of looking, with only 2 interviews the whole time. California's employment situation is the pits. Can't wait til I start looking too

You never know what sorts of volunteer opportunities are out there, or that you can make for yourself. I volunteered for a local dog shelter here, somewhat on a whim, and now it's evolved into me running their twitter account (@sb_DAWG *cough*... lol), and writing articles for their newsletter. Definitely more resume enhancing than just walking dogs!

We went out hiking today, but didn't feel the earthquake though apparently some up here felt it too. I guess people tend to feel them a little more when they're inside, and sometimes it can just be a dizzy feeling? We were out on the rocks and stuff though, so I don't know.
