I'm a bit claustrophobic, so personally I wouldn't go for this. I'd also worry about backing up into him and what not. They are really cute desks though, but if you have the room, I'd look into something more side by side. But that's me. It is a nice lookin' desk though smile.gif

CanadaMontreal K-1 Interview December
I've always done it mm/dd/yyyy. Never realized it was an American vs. Canadian way. lol I guess it depends on how you say the date. I say October 28th, for example, rather than the 28th of October, so it doesn't make sense to me to then switch it afterwards when writing it out.

Anyways, that's irrelevant... lol Hurrah for pre-Christmas interview dates!!! You'll have a slew of reviews to go on, that's for sure. laughing.gif

So far I learned how to do the C scale, and know 7 chords! LOL I am at work, so can't watch the video right now, but will definitely check it out when I get home. smile.gif thanks!

I used to play keyboard when I was a teenager, so I'm coming in to stringed instruments completely new, but do have some musicality in my background, which is definitely helpful. If anyone else plays the ukulele or is interested in learning a new instrument too, let me know! Especially any new Canaliens (love that term.. haha) who will have some free time while waiting for AP/EAD/AOS in the coming months. smile.gif

CanadaAmerican in Canada....AUGHHHH!
QUOTE (Siren66 @ Dec 5 2009, 07:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello!

My boyfriend is here with me in Canada...has been for 4 months. He is USC. We eventually want to move to the states but for now and the foreseeable future are goping to live here. I believe the easiest way to do this is for him to get a job with a company willing to sponsor him for a work visa and then apply for permanent residency? Hence then he still retains his US citizen status. Is this correct?

Also we already know we want to get married in the next 2 yrs. We are waiting for my Divorce to be finalized and to save for a wedding. Questions on this are:
- WHAT is the easiest way to do the whole getting married/moving south deal? Is it better to go there, get married and file a AOS? We really DO NOT want to be seperated during any filing processes if it can be avoided. I was also told if I am able to transfer through my company and have their help in getting a work permit for the US and then we get married there and file AOS that might be one of the ONLY options that allows us to stay together during filing. HELP!

I have read so many confusing and differing things on these subjects sad.gif

Thank you in advance to all who offer tips!

You'll get lots of answers to this I'm sure. First of all though, since you are already planning on getting married, you really really should NOT try to just go to the US, get married, and file AOS. That system is designed for people who enter the US for other reasons (as a visitor or with a work visa), and THEN decide to get married. Yes, that sounds as messed up as it is... But still, I would warn against that method, since you've already declared your plans to marry. It's definitely not something that anyone would say is 'better'. That said, it's been done, but it's doubtful anyone will recommend it above the other methods.

Also, if your b/f is living in Canada and you get married in Canada and filed DCF for CR1 or something, he will have to give evidence of US domicile. That will be very difficult to do if he's been living in Canada the whole time. You may have seen various threads lately of several people being denied visas from Montreal because of this. One of them is moving back to the US temporarily to establish themselves then file proof. It takes a few months, but seriously, a few months apart is nothing compared with a lifetime together knowing you did things the "right" way and without worry.

Have you looked into the Canadian immigration process at all? Just before you decide the easiest way to get him to 'stay' there is via a work visa. I don't know how easy they are to get (the US work visas are not really easy to get). Does he have a specialty? A degree? etc? Those things will help (and lack of them will hurt).

I hate to break it to you, but it's highly likely that you will have to be separated at some point for a little while. It might just be a few months as I mentioned before, or it might be a little more. Since he's already been in Canada for 4 months, you really only have 2 months left before he has to return to the US without overstaying the 6 months visa-free visiting time. Some people will say he can just cross the border and come back again, but some will say he can't. Either way, if you have no paperwork soon, make sure he's outta here for a bit.

I'd estimate that 95% of couples on this board have gone through this process separated from their fiancé's or spouses, including myself. Believe me, none of us WANTED to be separated. That's just how it is. You're going to have to accept the fact that you will be hard pressed to find a way to do this completely together. I'm sorry. I just want you to know that.

Check out http://roadtocanada.com/ to find a bit of info for keeping your b/f in Canada for now (and i'm sure others will give you more links, but that's a start). And welcome to VJ! We'll help as much as we can, but no one here will purposely suggest anything to you that is potentially visa fraud or illegal. Or if we do, it will be with, hopefully, clear warnings.

Sheesh. I was just asking some questions, and didn't intend to cause a debate. I'm not trying to 'cheat' the system, I'm just trying to figure out how it works. I'll file whatever is required. I just went by what was posted on that list of "Residential ties include:"... since I have a few, it was confusing.
The bank account is kept because my car payments come out of it, and my credit card is not paid off because I can't afford it, so I have to keep that open until I can get it paid off in a couple months (the bank account is also there to help with making payments).

As for the car.... the lease recently ended and we decided to buy it out due to small damages like paint scratches and chips being estimated at $1000 to fix (which is stupid because the car itself was only worth $4800 at the end, and it seemed useless to put that much money into a cheap vehicle that we would just return).... My parents will be using it and paying for it, but it has to stay in my name, since they are unable to put it in theirs due to their personal situation.

hmm...
so I will still have ties to Canada, including a car in my name, and the bank accounts, credit card, driver's license, social ties.... does that mean i could still be considered a resident and not lose my OHIP coverage?? Just in case something happens..

Also,
I am leaving Canada on Jan 2nd or 3rd. If I do fully give up residency, would I still have to fill out a tax return for 2010 even though I will only be in the country for 2 days and have no income?

CanadaVancouver Consulate Kept Passport but it's required for medical
I don't know of anyone else who's run into this. I would've thought that the consulate would know that you need it for the medical, but can't say I'm surprised. Did they give you any paperwork to show that you're approved pending the medical results? Do you have your passport number written down? And get passport photos and everything? Did you get a photocopy of your passport like it asks?

The only thing I can suggest is maybe contacting the consulate and asking if you can sorta 'borrow' your passport back for the day since you didn't know you needed it for the medical. Then return the passport to the consulate once it's complete. You'll have to return there to drop off your med results anyway.

You say she will be attending grad school in the US, do you know when? There is nothing illegal with her entering on a student visa, you marry, and then adjust her status from the US. If she will be entering as a student before March, this would be the most logical solution for you both.

hmm.. , do you think it would create a problem considering they ALREADY have intent to marry?

Well I'm definately no expert when it comes to adjusting from anything but a K-1, but logic tells me no. If I'm wrong somebody tell me so, I don't mind eating my words! laughing.gif

But I'm thinking that some visas allow duel intent, like a work visa for example. My understanding is that some people (if eligable) use work visas as a way to go to the US without committing to moving permanently. So, if one came to the US on a work visa and their primary intention was to work, and then decided to marry while their visa was still valid, I don't see anything wrong with that. So, they have intent to marry, but her primary intent is to attend school in the US. The smartest thing would be to wait a little while and file the AOS, as not to create a situation where they can suggest she used the student visa as a quick way to move and marry. I'm not trying to suggest anything illegal here, I just don't see it as an issue.

though you are kind of suggesting that. lol

Have you already made steadfast wedding plans for March? I.e. booked things, sent out invites, etc. Are you expecting to be able to move immediate after you marry? Are you going to be living in the US?

If you start the K1 Visa right now, you will not be able to get married in March. However, if you wait until March, then file paperwork you could go the route of the CR-1 Visa. You can find out more info in the guides here: http://www.visajourn...amp;page=guides

Make it 3. I went and signed for mine, since I wasn't home during the day when they delivered the mail.
I've actually have relatively decent experiences with Canada Post. Amusingly enough, when my medical results were sent via FedEx, the box was just shoved between our front screen door and the main door. lol! Oh well.... At least with that one I didn't have to go all the way to the Fed Ex depot across town to track it down.

CanadaK-1 visa....Do you have to stay in Canada?
QUOTE (ConfusedCanadian9 @ Dec 13 2009, 12:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen from BC and my fiance is an American citizen from Iowa. We are thinking about filing a K-1 visa over this coming holiday, but first I had a couple questions.....

Once we've filed the k-1 visa will I as a Canadian be able to leave the country? I won't be traveling through the US at all, but I was thinking about heading over to the Bahamas, anyone know if I am allowed to do this?

After my fiance files the k-1 visa is there anything that I as the Canadian need to do immediately after up in Canada? I understand that I will eventually need to go to an interview, just curious if there is anything else that I need to do right after it has been filed?

I've also heard that in some cases the k-1 visa can go through and be accepted in 60 days, has anyone ever heard of if going through this fast?

Thank you, I look forward to reading what you have to say

From start to finish? Absolutely not. I don't even know where you would've 'heard' that. Not even expedited ones (which are expedited for VERY good reason usually, which you have to prove) are rarely that fast. Get ready to settle in for a few months.

Please, please read the guides. I don't know where you would've had the impression that you can't leave Canada.

Have you heard of the Packet 3 yet?? And all of the other documents you will need to obtain such as the long form birth certificate, and police certificate... and the medical?.... anyone?? Bueller?

I have one I could DEFINITELY put on that list that is in downtown London here. It was dirty, bad service, the elevator was SCARY, and bedsheets were stained and had cigarette burns, I found leftover razors in the linen closet, the internet didn't work, they didn't even have breakfast! For the Toronto and Montreal exams a verbal declaration is sufficient...

The Vancouver approved office though doesn't specify on their website whether you need written proof or not (though they do lean towards written proof). You could probably go to a walk in clinic and get the blood titre test done. It should be free, and doesn't take long. That way you have something to prove in writing just in case.

Here's their website. http://www.wokingmed...ccinations.html

Do you mean fiance(e)/spouse? Because you said ex... I don't care what time zone my ex is in laughing.gif

But the time change (eastern vs. mountain) was really annoying for us sometimes... He would get home from work around 6, but for me on the east it would be 8. Then if I had to be in school at 8am the next day, I'd need to sleep by say 11 and it would only be 9 for him. So most nights I would stay up past midnight, sleep 5 hours and spend the day in school. That was pretty crappy. On the plus, we would talk on the phone more if we couldn't be on the computer for too long. I always found we could accomplish more in an hour long phone call then we could talking over the internet for 3 hours. There are to many distractions!
