CanadaGood luck for all the people interviewing on the 20th !!!
I'm back! Finished the 8-9 hr drive home from Montreal just now, and need to crash... LOL But I will post a more detailed review as well when I can.

We had the lady in room 7, and I found her very nice as well. smile.gif So don't worry if you don't get the director, there are other capable and lovely interviewers available. wink.gif

Thanks for the congrats everyone! Looking forward to bugging you all re: POE and AOS... haha tongue.gif

But, we were approved!! hurraaay! biggrin.gif I will tell you all about it later, but for now I have free breakfast to attend to. LOL And yes, we are back at the hotel already and it`s only 9am! smile.gif
Sam and Ben were first in line, we were 2nd, and Arabella and Sean (who got there basically the same time as us) were third. It was awesome having fellow VJers there! I`m sure we saw other VJers in line, but didn`t get to talk to them. Hope they all have good news too!! biggrin.gif kicking.gif

Lucky gal! Ben won't be here until tomorrow evening. Between layovers and waiting for the shuttle at the airport... ack, it's taking so long.

Once he's here though, I know the rest of the week'll go by in a blink.

yeah it takes Dan about 12 hours to get here... he had 2 layovers, but was able to fly right into London instead of Detroit and then the bus... so that's good.

I'm glad we're able to have our fiance's with us for the interview! I feel really lucky and glad about that smile.gif

I am pretty sure proof of domicile is for Americans residing in Canada who file DCF. Has he lived in the US his whole life? Don't his paystubs show a US address?

That's also the problem with contradicting information on VJ. Not that it's VJ's fault... it's just people filing for different visas with different requirements all discussing it in the same area.

Anyways.... no, he actually has not been living in the US his whole life. However, he is a citizen of course, and has been living there since April 2008. We have lots of other things to show proof of domicile (incl. paystubs), but you know... last minute paranoia that they'll deny us for some silly reason. I just want to be prepared, in case I'm that ONE person that they decide to ask for EVERYTHING from. sad.gif

CanadaThings We Need For The K-1 Interview
Just to bring it sorta Off-Topic2.gif LOL

I'm wondering about proof of domicile. My fiancé lives with his parents right now, and JUST applied for an apartment on Saturday, so has no lease on it yet. I asked him to get a copy of the application at least, but his boss ditched him at work today so he had to work late and couldn't get to the rental office time. So, we've resorted to writing a letter from his parents. A fake lease essentially.

For one, I'm confused as to the importance of this. It's sometimes hard to differentiate between the K1 and the CR1 requirements, but they do ask for evidence of domicile so I'll bring it just in case. We already have bank statements, doctor/dentist visits, California driver's license, job letter, but no lease. Does anyone have an example or suggestions on what we can do for the 'fake' lease? can it just be a letter stating he's lived there since (date) and pays (x) amount of rent?

And the best part of being first in line is you can line up directly in front of the door and its slightly "inwards" the building so you are shielded from the wind. smile.gif

Ok my plan is to set the clocks ahead a few hours and Sean won't notice the difference!

Can we build a bonfire in front of the Consulate to keep me warm?

Anyone know the difference between waiting outside the Consulate in the bitter cold for 2 hours for it to open so that you can be first in line . . .

And waiting inside the Consulate for 2 hours in the warmth because you weren't first in line?

Just sayin'

Honestly, I'd rather wait in the bitter cold for a couple of hours and be out of there by ten.

Ben might feel differently... but, heh... he won't know of the option.

I'm just saying if you get there at 6:00am and get out of there by 9:30 that's 3.5 hours. If you get there by 7:30am and get out of there by 11:00am, that's the same 3.5 hours, just 30 minutes of which is outside in the cold instead of 2 hours outside in the cold.

I'm bringing a book either way.

for people driving home right after though, the difference of leaving for home at 10:30, vs 12 (giving time to run back to the hotel and check out and all that jazz), makes a difference of getting back home after a 8-9 hr drive at like, 7:30pm vs 9pm... which doesn't seem like a big deal, but really, I'd rather get home asap. Also, I pretty much hate waiting and really want to get it over and done with. We're Canadians... if we can't handle the damn cold weather we should shut up and move... oh wait, that's what we're trying to do here... blink.gif

QUOTE (Sam and Ben @ Nov 15 2009, 05:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yeah, I see what you're saying. I guess, for me, it's much like the medical. Sure, if you show up late, you're waiting inside in the warmth... but you're waiting through whatever backlog there was found during however many folks showed up early.

Less people in front of you, less chances for further delay. *shrug* I also enjoy being super early to most things, to a fault.

I agree on that as well. I'd rather not have to deal with the backlog of all the people getting there before me. Like at the medical, when I started it there was me and one other person in the waiting room. When I left, the waiting room was PACKED. All in a difference of an hour and a 1/2. I can't imagine how much waiting would've been involved if I had gone to the medical at 8am instead of 6:15ish. I had time to drive back home AND go back to work in the afternoon! LOL

I know I need my vaccinations and any pertinent medical info but what do I need in regards to my K-1 visa application forms. I just sent my Packet 3 back. Will I be receiving more paperwork that I have to bring with me? Also, if it turns out that i need any shots is there an option to get them there?

Do you have your P4 letter? A copy of that will suffice. If not, a copy of the cover letter for your P3 will be fine. Whatever has your case # on it. They won't even keep it. Don't forget you need 3 passport photos as well. And the fee. I don't know if there's an option to get last minute vaccines there. I would sort of doubt it. Are you getting it done in Toronto?

A TON of the stuff that is on the Canada Wiki page was put on by trailmix. I know it took a lot of time to do. People who had thoughts about what could go on there, lists, copies of documents etc. could send them to her, and then she organized and posted same. Perhaps she'd still be willing to do this. I don't want to speak for her however. Perhaps PM her, and ask her, and she could update the info.

A couple days ago I scanned my complete packet 3 and 4 that I received from Montreal. Danu then updated the wiki with links to all the scans. I have the new packages that were recently changed, so this is about as updated as those documents get.
Not that I want to speak for Danu laughing.gif but I'm sure she'd be glad to help too if there's anything else to add.

CanadaDid NOT Receive I-94 at POE for my K-1 Visa Activation
So, just to give everyone an update... I went to L.A. today, and was able to get my I-94. I can only hope that it's correct. They didn't make me pay the $6. Not that I'm complaining, but still. lol The thing they stapled into my passport is the white card that was at the bottom of the form... aka the departure record. I also had to fill out an additional form... I forget which one it was though. But oh well.

Anyways, I went to the deferred inspection site. They were able to help me. yay for that. Now I get to find out what I can actually do with this I-94. lol
ashenflowersFemaleCanada2010-01-28 01:21:00
CanadaDid NOT Receive I-94 at POE for my K-1 Visa Activation

They failed to issue you with an I-94 that had the correct information on it - that is their error, not yours. That qualifies as 'incorrect information'. They should be able to correct the problem at the deferred inspection station. It is not USCIS that issues I-94 - it is the CBP which is why you need to go back to a 'border'.

Yeah, good point. That is why I was concerned that they might not consider it their error though... i.e. a USCIS error specifically, since as you mentioned the CBP is the one that messed up. Still, it was certainly by no fault of my own. I gave them everything they needed to process it properly.

Unfortunately I am waiting for a home phone... still. Which was supposed to be ready today, but is not. So I can't call until tomorrow to see about getting it straightened out. Sigh

CanadaDid NOT Receive I-94 at POE for my K-1 Visa Activation
Thanks guys. I think going to a 'closer' POE or deferred inspection station would help a lot. I haven't had a chance to call them yet, but will asap.

Do you guys think I would need to do this before getting married? I am getting married next week on the 20th. I don't know if when I go to LA that they will stamp me a new date rather than my original entry date... and if they stamp it and give me an I 94 AFTER my marriage... welllll that's a whole new can of worms. lol
ashenflowersFemaleCanada2010-01-13 16:32:00
CanadaDid NOT Receive I-94 at POE for my K-1 Visa Activation
I looked it up last night when I was posting about it, but didn't give the info. I found that the closest deferred inspection stations are in L.A., which as I mentioned, is about an hour and a 1/2 to 2 hour drive from here, depending on traffic. sigh. It's not THAT far, but still. I'm pretty sure that's the nearest infopass location as well. I have not been there yet, as we've been really busy in the past 4 days getting everything together for the house since my fiance didn't live on his own before I got here (he just moved mid-December and the apartment had nothing... no furniture, no food, no shower curtain or dish rack or any accessories like that... $500 later, plus $450 of groceries that his mom bought us, and I think we're good for now, finally...). I'm going to test my luck and call the customer service line, and see if they can help first.

Thanks for the tips everyone. On the instructions for the I-102 it does say that if I'm requesting a correction due to a USCIS error I don't have to pay the fee, but I'm not sure they consider this the same thing. I mean yes, they made an error, but it's not like they issued me something with incorrect info. Either way, it takes 2.5 months to process, according to their time table, and I'd rather not wait that long to file for everything. Though, I guess depending on what they say I'd have no choice. I'm sure though if people have been able to get an I94 from the deferred inspection stations, then I should too. So that gives me some hope.

Luckily I don't need to have a SSN to get a marriage license here, but I do need the I-94 for the EAD and AP application as well, and I don't know if it's possible that ALL forms would be lenient on the lack of I-94. I'm a little hesitant to attempt filing without the I-94. Simply because the instructions flat out ask for a copy of it. Who knows. On the plus side, my passport looks quite new, even though it's a few years old, so it's clear to see that nothing was stapled to it, and they even wrote K1 on the stamp, so they KNEW they were processing me for K-1. I didn't enter via the airport, I entered by driving across the bridge, and was never given anything to fill out. Just one thing I had to sign.
I guess I won't be getting a bank account any time soon.

On top of receiving the 'oops' canceled visa in my passport as well, I should be able to provide some great examples on how people really need to be careful and know the process inside and out (thought I did, but obviously not) and NOT trust anyone working in this process. This is ridiculous. Anyway, I'll let everyone know how it goes.

I'll just toss this in as a side.... the day after we arrived in California (after a 5 day drive here), my fiance went to work and was fired. I was supposed to be able to get a job where he worked once I received my EAD, so basically I've also lost the job I would've had. So.... that's not helping.... I'll post about that on another thread. lol... yeah.....

CanadaDid NOT Receive I-94 at POE for my K-1 Visa Activation
Sorry for the multiple posting. It would appear that I need to file for I-102, which carries a fee of $320, and processing time of 2.5 months (average), from what I've found online. I'm actually quite furious. Some CBP official's mistake is costing us this HUGE expense and HUGE delay?!? And now I don't even know if we will get what we need in time to file AOS before 90 days from our POE is up? We're getting married next week, but I don't know if we'll end up in trouble for not filing AOS immediately. I really don't want to wait that long for this. Not to mention we'd have to wait that much longer for me to have what I need to file for EAD and AP, and a SSN!??! #######?!? I'm seriously upset. I don't know what to do. :crying: We don't have the luxury of time or money right now... They might as well have told us we were denied... that's basically what this feels like right now...

I wished I never filed the K1 petition and just got married and applied for AOS. I wish I knew this information before I submitted the paperwork.

Try to remove that from your mind. If you dwell on what you wish you had done you'll get yourself into a not-happy place. The K1 doesn't last forever, it's absolutely legal (which is the 'safest' way to go) and as mentioned you can still visit while it's processing. It might take a few months longer, but ultimately you'll be at the same end point. Happily married, and together. Don't rush it, and don't try to trick your way around the immigration process. It's not fun, it's not easy, and it's not fair. But there's nothing we can do about that.

Lady told me the letter size was the biggest they had until I pointed to the bigger one.

I wonder if they didn't have it in stock or if they didn't know any better?

I would guess the second one. Post office employees can be... challenging to work with sometimes. I just went in there with the required dimensions wrote down on a little piece of paper and told them that's what I needed. That way they can't be to confused!

Arabella... don't you want to kick him sometimes? laughing.gif I know you love him but he's not making this process very easy on you!

From my experience, the post office person in my Shoppers was... challenging. I came to the counter and said, I need the biggest xpresspost envelope that costs 15 dollars with signature. Of course there is only one "biggest xpresspost envelope that cost 15 dollars with signature" right? The woman was all, "well where do you plan to ship it?". I looked at her and repeated, "I need the biggest expresspost envelope that costs 15 dollars with signature". Needless to say, when she realized I did not give a ratsass with what her "recommendations" were, she got me the envelope...

You just have to show them who is the boss! tongue.gif

I think that's a perfectly valid question. It was just basically confirming that you wanted the Regional mailer and not the National one. I would've asked you the same thing to confirm that you were getting the right one. If you're mailing something, I think you'd be more concerned about where it was going than how much it costs. You were right, by the cost, but she was certainly not 'wrong' in wanting to confirm.

I was in at the local Shoppers Drug Mart that has a post office in it. They carried the correct size.

That's where I checked as well.

Oh well. I think it's been established that the one that says 'Pack 390 x 295 mm' on the back will suffice! *crosses fingers*
