Canadano I-94 at the border!

I didn't get an I-94 when I went across the border is this going to be an issue??

Just so you all know I'm on a K-1 visa.

Thanks!

Ah, good times. Same happened to me. YES, this is going to be an issue. You must have the I-94 with your documents to apply for AOS, etc. (actually, I shouldn't really say it's an ISSUE, as it's easily corrected, but just know that you must get the I-94)

I'll assume that you at least got a stamp on your visa/passport when you crossed? Tell me they at least stamped it. lol

Go to your local deferred inspection site : http://www.cbp.gov/l...ction_sites.pdf

They will be able to issue you a proper I-94 dated with the date of your stamp.

Here's more info about them: http://www.cbp.gov/x...red_inspection/

What if you don't want to move and live in the US again, but just want to come back to visit? Is this grounds for denial at the border?

CanadaAOS Pending - Applying to College

I would call, or go down to their admissions office and ask them. You anticipate that you would have your green card by then, but you wouldn't have the documentation until then to prove that you are an LPR.

BTW, have you applied for your SSN and drivers license? If you haven't, this can be a big pain in the ####### with admissions, although, I suppose that depends upon the university.

I have my SSN card, but not driver's license yet. The application asked for SSN, but didn't mention the license. That said I'm hoping to have it by August 23rd too. lol

And thanks, I think I will submit the application online so I can get a reference number at least, and then call them to follow up.

CanadaAOS Pending - Applying to College

don't let them count you as international. your tuition prices will skyrocket if they classify that way

Yes I know... as I mentioned, that's why I am concerned. lol If they try to do that I'll go in person and cry and beg and show proof that I can't afford it and would have to postpone school for a year. I can prove that I have my AOS application submitted and pending at least, and hopefully they should accept that as proof that I am taking steps to remain in California, and not go back home (though secretly I want to go back home, but they don't need to know that).

And thanks for the suggestion frenzy. :) After I posted this I looked through the online application a little more, and it says if you put your status as 'other' that you just need to contact Admissions after you submit your application. I think I'm going to do 'other' and put my visa as k-1 even though it's no longer current. lol then I can straighten it up with them later

You don't have to own the UHaul you're renting if that's how you POE, so your sister's car should be fine. Even if I had additional drivers on my insurance, the pink slip wouldn't say those people's names.

US Customs and Border Protection has offices wherever goods are imported/exported. If you are close enough to a major Port then you can just have your parents bring the car down and you can import it once it's in your possession. I took my car to customs today, with compliance letter, bill of sale, registration, and passport (they'll want your alien number and proof of visa) -- I was given an "Informal Import" type form. It was no sweat. They really don't seem all ####### and strange about Canadian cars, even at a port like Boston that isn't a US-Canada land crossing.

I second the comment that often phoning the border will get you the "officialese" and not the actual procedure. When I called the CBP main number I got an answer that included filling out and bringing 2-3 different forms and making an appointment with border officials. In reality, it's way more simple.

True, but with a UHaul, you have a rental agreement, and proof of insurance. I'm not importing the car though. But still, it does sound like it's simpler than I think, so that's good. smile.gif

re: the letter from the owner... as I've said my sister in law is overseas. Do you think they would accept an unsigned letter? I could easily forge an email, so it doesn't seem very official. lol

I've always borrowed cars to cross the border, they asked a few times whose car it was, just said my parents and then I went on my way.

Just make sure you can prove it's insured and all of that and I'm sure you'll be fine!

That's the other thing I'm worried about. It's insured, but not with me as a driver. Sigh. I wish she wasn't overseas. I don't know how hard it will be to get her to add me to her insurance.

I've kind of had the opposite experience in calling the border for info - I always get the wrong info. Then again, sometimes what's in their 'book' and what they actually do, are two different things.

If you are nervous about it I see you have a couple of options. Take a letter from your parents with their contact information to confirm they will be travelling in a few weeks to come and pick up the car or get your SIL to email you a letter of permission.

Thanks trailmix smile.gif Those are good ideas too. I'll feel better if I can at least have something with me.

You could call the border and ask what you might need to bring if anything. That way you have time to get what ever it is they need if anything. I know we've called them a few times on what we could and could not do or what we had to bring. LOL Generally they were always helpful.

Well, I guess my concern is that even if they need anything, I can't get it from her. lol But that's a good idea. I will give them a call. Thanks

CanadaLast minute panics in POE prep.
Hi everyone... My POE is in less than a week, and with the holidays and still working and all, it's actually been a bit hard to prepare as much as I've wanted to to this point.

Anyways... long story short, one of my questions is in relation to how I'm bringing my stuff over. I'm driving across, at the Ambassdor Bridge. I've read a few reviews, and it doesn't seem like they search many people's cars, or ask for a packing list very much. So that's nice! lol However, my concern is that I am borrowing my sister in law's car to drive our stuff over (it's bigger than my own vehicle so will hold more stuff... i'm leaving my car in Canada). My parents will be flying out about 2 weeks later, to attend our wedding, then driving the car back to Canada. My sister in law is not in Canada, so I can't get any sort of letter of permission or anything though. Do you think they will give me any hassle at the border since the car is not in my name? We have the same last name, and it's not a common name at all, so I'm hoping that will help. Our addresses will of course be different though. Do they even ask for the ownership or anything? Since the car is just being used to bring the stuff over, i'm not actually importing the car or anything. Like I said, my parents will be driving it back anyways.

I dunno... it just popped into my head today, and I'm starting to wonder if that's a bad idea.

So, I'm selling my Futurama DVDs. I have volume 1-4. I posted a FB status update about it, and told people to name their own (reasonable) price. So of course I get a reply from someone saying they want them, but don't know what a reasonable price would be, and don't even give a wager.
#######?!
So now I have to find something that won't rip me off, but at the same time won't make them uninterested.

I was thinking $40. Each volume retails for about $20-30, so that's 1/2 price (in fact a little less). I think it seems fair. What do you guys think? Would you pay $40 for that? Or should I ask for more? less?

Ok, we just got back from a really fun time at Karen and Joel's place in the Georgia mountains. Their new (ok, not so new anymore but still newish) house is really nice. They have a terrific property - lots of land with a bit of a treed area at the side and a pasture behind so they won't have to put up with crowding neighbours. Joe's parents were visiting from Nova Scotia and brought down some lobster and scallops with them so we had a lobster dip with the chips and then scallops wrapped with bacon and grilled along with lots of other good food finished off with Tim Horton's coffee. Joe got to taste Molsen's Canadian beer as well. Joel had made some video collages of various Canadian tv shows and commercials so we watched segments of the Beachcombers, This Hour has 22 minutes, Royal Canadian Air Farce, hockey cartoons - and Tim Horton and I AM Canadian commercials including some I hadn't seen before. I haven't laughed that much in a long time! One of their friends even made a peanut butter chocolate cheesecake and decorated it with a red maple leaf to help celebrate an early "Canada Day'. It wasn't too bad of a drive - a little over 100 miles - but it was all highway except for the last little bit and traffic was only bad in two sections so we made good time. Thanks Karen and Joel for the invitation. We had a great time.

Sorry to bump this back up, but this is the first time I had a chance to reply. We've been internet-less for a long time (5 days driving, plus another 5 days to get the cable company to get their shizzit together), and just got connected today. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone!

I didn't receive an I-94 which I'm concerned about, but will look into it on here to see if I should be worried. I also forgot to mention that the guy that liked to butt in tried to tell me I needed to import my car when he over heard (i.e. eavesdropped) that we were driving to California. I told him we're not keeping it there and my parents are driving it back, and then he was like 'oh ok'.... and left it alone. lol

I can't believe how painless this crossing was. I was expecting a lot more hassle. We got there around 9am I think, on a Sunday. Basically no line, as there was just one person in front of us. The CBP took our passports, and I told her we're activating a K1 Visa. I don't remember exactly what she said, but I remember her asking if we were already married (lol), and I said no. she asked if we had any food, and I told her that we had cat food, but it was just the dry kind. She kinda made a face but did nothing about it... lol Then she did some computer stuff, and radioed to secondary and told us where to go, which was like, pulling ahead 50 ft where a guy told us exactly where to park. He originally said to leave the windows down, but it was COLLLLD, so I told him I had a cat, and he said I could leave it mostly up, but just open it a crack, but then he remembered that they do things differently now (or something?), and I give my keys to some dude in a booth and so I could actually close the window all the way. LOL Anyways... so I get out, and he asks if my cat is in a carrier, and I say yes, and then I tell him I also have a hamster, and he laughed, and was like 'would it be a cruel joke to put the hamster in with the cat?' haha so I 'loled', and told him they normally get along, but she's pissed off right now, and might take her aggression out on him. hahah

Anyway, I digress.... we went in to secondary and there weren't many people waiting, so we went right up to the check in area of the counter thing. It's a bit hazy, but I remember the guy asking me my mother's name, then my father's name and saying 'yup, that's you', then told me to go stand on the red line and i'd be called up... this guy comes back in the story later... I basically had enough time to find out where the red line was and I was called up. LOL It was the original girl that we saw in the booth when we first drove up (weird)... She took our papers and asked a few questions (pretty simple ones, like where'd we meet, when are we getting married, etc)... then told us to sit down. She called me back to sign a couple things, and took prints of my right index finger and gave me a wet-wipe thing to clean it off... lol aww. Then I sat and waited some more. I was a bit concerned about my critters in the car, but I peeked out the window a few times and no one was even looking in the car. So I knew they'd be ok (i.e. warm) for a bit. No one asked for a packing list, and nothing in the car was moved. We passed the time by listening to them grill a perfectly innocent looking middle aged woman from Pakistan. I felt bad for her, but they were very nice to her. Just asking tons of questions. I was at least able to restore her faith in humanity (maybe) by telling her she dropped her glove when she didn't notice. haha

Part way through, the girl processing the stuff asked me to write down our address. I confirmed that she meant the address we are moving too, and she said yes. So I did. Thing is, my fiance just got this apt 2 weeks ago, so it doesn't match what is written on the paperwork. I told her this, and she's like 'so who's address is this?' (on the forms). And I said it was his parents, so she said ok. Then she said I could sit down. So I did, but I heard her talking to the guy next to her saying 'so I have to do an address change??' in a slightly annoyed voice... hahaha and he asks me if I can still get mail at the 'old' address, and I said yes, so they left it and didn't change anything. I think because they didn't feel like it. So I will have to change this later, but that's ok.

So yeah, when they were done processing the paperwork they called me back up and gave me my passport with the stamp on it, and told me to keep it on me at all times, as it is the record of my status in the US. They keep all the good stuff in the package (I wanted to see what was in it, but alas, no). The guy that originally checked me in was now at a slightly different area, so i checked 'out' with another person. However, check in guy felt obligated to pipe in (he seemed the type that was either in charge, or liked to pretend he was), and he asked me 'now what are you NOT going to do'... and I was like... uhh...?? I didn't quite know what he was trying to get me to say. So I was like 'file for adjustment of status, and all that fun stuff'... and he's like.. 'ok, and what else'... so I say 'umm... work?'... and he's like 'no, you can work right now... with what you have there, you can work'... and I was like ... whuuu? that I didn't know (I think he's wrong)... and then he's like ' you can't leave'... and i was like 'oh, I know.. I have to stay until I've adjusted status', but he was like talking over me, and being like 'don't make me send you back there', and was like blarrrgh! #######!! but it was all good, and then we left.
lol

and that was long. Sorry. Long story short, except for weird dude with the trick questions, it was great, and we were there maybe 45 mins I think.
lol

I don't know how helpful this will be to you (I've never been to Toronto), but you could use Google Maps and Google StreetView to help you find parking and get a better feel for the area before you drive. I've done that in the U.S. and recently in Vancouver. StreetView doesn't solve all your issues, but it's nice to gather information before actually driving in the mess.

Yeah, I do that a lot... I've already brought up google maps to check out how far hotels are and what not. Never really used it for parking though (still getting used to remembering I have the option for StreetView)... Thanks for the idea.

I know that sounds super lame and spoiled.. lol but I've never taken the subway alone (I HAVE taken a subway in NYC, Toronto, and LA, but I was always with someone at the time, and there isn't one in London obviously, to get other experience of my own), and I've never actually taken a city bus alone either (grew up in the country near a small town, then had a car ever since I moved out). Amusingly enough, I'd rather drive than try to take public transit by myself... laughing.gif I'm just a 'car' person, or walking person. sigh. lol

I do see the station nearby there at King and Yonge, but still... wacko.gif I'd be all freaked out about trying to find a hotel near the route and figuring out the schedule and making sure I catch the right train and everything... I should've mentioned that when I mentioned public transit laughing.gif

Steve's wife here:

I'm about 2-3 hours from Toronto, but used to work there and still have clients up that way so know it pretty well. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It's a bit of a pain to get to as the traffic is HORRIBLE around there because Yonge St. is all dug up near there, and so are some of the side streets. No idea what they're doing down there . . . .

Anyway, it's a really nice place to stay and they're really cool about you leaving your car there until 4 or 5pm if you don't want to leave right away. Note that there is NO restaurant on site, so you have to order in or take food with you - no fridge though IIRC, so that limits your options.

If you want really specific directions by car, let me know.

F'ing construction!! blah. ok yeah... I might brave it by car still, cause yeah seriously, public transit gives me a heart attack. lol What do you suggest?

CanadaToronto Medical - for NON-Torontonians

There's a King Edward Hotel on King Street, which is about a 10-15 minute walk to the medical center. Not sure how much it is but it might be a little pricey.

I would suggest public transportation. TTC operates starting from 6AM, so you should be good. Just a reminder that doors open at 6:30AM.

Hope this helps.

Eek, the King Edward is really expensive... lol! But thanks for the tip. I like being able to compare at least. smile.gif

CanadaToronto Medical - for NON-Torontonians
I live about a 2 hour drive from Toronto.. it's not bad... but I still don't want to have to leave at 4 am to get there on time to do my medical next week. I tried searching some info on VJ, but couldn't actually really find any info together in one spot (maybe cause so many of you actually are from Toronto!? LOL.. or are doing medicals in Montreal).

Annnyways.. I was wondering, if anyone has a suggestion for a good hotel located near Dr. Seiden's office, or what the status is for parking in the area, or if it's better to take public transit (keeping in mind I'd like to arrive around 6:15 am).

Thanks smile.gif

OH.. OH .. lol... I DID happen to see that the Holiday Inn Express Toronto - Downtown (woot) is on Lombard St, about 3 blocks from the medical location, so that's pretty sweet! They do have parking, but it's $20 extra. That might solve my dilemma, but still, I wanted to let other people know, who might be wondering the same things as me!!
