CanadaCanadian Obtaining a Florida DL - Lessons Learned
haha! I've found Canada certainly has it's fair share of people who are thrown into the mix without proper training.

That said. I have my first beef with the DMV. Actually, to be fair, it's a beef with California (another one!? no way!). The government is so broke that to save money they close all the DMVs on Fridays. So I just got my SSN today, and want to move ahead with license plans. I can make an appointment online... fine. But I wanted to go to the DMV office to pick up a copy of the handbook so I could start studying for the written test. I can't. It's online yes, but I want the physical version my hands. Now I have to wait for Monday. SIGH.

Luckily, by this point, I KNOW I can drive, and drive well (if I do say so myself... and I do  ). I don't think I'll be nerve wracked (of course that's easy to say sitting calmly at the computer), just mostly irritated at the extra hassle on top of everything else that's going on. I also HATE driving our car. It was my husband's parents' car that they let us have when they got a new one. It's a big ugly subaru wagon with leather seats. It's SO uncomfortable for me to sit in and drive, and it's effing HUGE. I can drive big cars/trucks, but I just don't want to. Especially this one. There's not enough room for my legs, the steering wheel is in an uncomfortable position, the leather seats make me slide around.. etc (I could go on :P ). The cars I had in Canada were super cute and small, and suited me better. This one sucks. lol So I guess I will probably be worried a bit about that affecting my driving.

hmm... maybe that's the trick. I'll see if I can bypass the test if I just surrender my license. I doubt it though. I don't know if Dan surrendered his or not, but I know he had to do a test. And I've been driving with a FULL G license for well OVER 10 years! what a waste...

So long story short, DMV's hire the absolute worst employees - just ask Selma and Patty. :jest:

haha!!! Nice.

But wow Sam, that's seriously ridiculous. What is up with Florida's ridiculous civil servants?! Now I'm scared to go to the DMV for my license. lol But since my SSN was so easy here maybe I'll get lucky. Did you have to do an other written test or anything? Apparently here in California I have to do a written test AND another road test to get a new license. It's stupid. So I'm not looking forward to that. It just has 'big hassle' written alllll over it.

CanadaWhy Canada Sucks....
I agree with everyone who says they both have their ups and downs, and also the fact that it really depends exactly what region you moved from, and what region you moved to.

I'm also from London, ON, but grew up in an even smaller middle of nowhere flat land between Windsor and Chatham. Was London an upgrade from my hometown of Buttfack Nowhere, ON? Yes. Hella yes. But even those two areas had their own pros and cons.

Going from London to Santa Barbara, is REALLY different. I miss snow. Yeah, I said it. I moved to So Cal and I LOVE SNOW. I'm really bummed to have sat here all Jan and Feb without ANY snow. I look out my window now and see mountains, instead of nothing, but meh. They're just mountains. Complaining about snow, ice and cold was a Canadian past time. Now we complain here when it gets down to 50 degrees F. pfft.

Also, we pay $1400 for a simple 1 bedroom apartment here. You heard me. So THAT sucks. ALOT. I also am afraid now to go to the doctor for ANYTHING, since I have no clue how much it would cost, and know we cant pay it. I didn't have a family doctor for my last few years in Canada, but I still miss my free walk in clinics.
Given that my husband is now out of work and is having a REALLY hard time finding a job, California is NOT rubbing me the right way. My standard of living has plummeted since moving here. I don't care about the pretty palm trees and the ocean and the mountains. Nor do I care about the cheap alcohol in the grocery store (though that still blows me away too...lol). They're not the things that make me feel like Canada sucks, and US is awesomeness.

Canada doesn't suck. Rogers sucks, yes. But Canada, no.

Maybe I'm just still adjusting, and since our situation has been ####### since I moved, that's swaying my opinion as well. But, if given the option, and knowing I had a place to live and maybe a job to move back to Canada for, I'd do so in a heartbeat.

CanadaAmerican Banking
Meh. I'm used to being raped for $10/month for my account in Canada, so that wouldn't be anything new. I could probably change my account type at this point, since I'm hardly using it anymore, but ah well. I certainly won't meet any minimum amount or direct deposit at this point, so we'll see what the fees come to be.

Oh, amusingly enough too, today I received something in the mail from Chase, saying they're giving people $100 just for opening a new checking account. That's it. I read the fine print. I'm not seeing a catch. Now I'm debating them again. I could SERIOUSLY use $100. lol

hmm..
Do you think it'd be worth it to take it to BoA and see if they'll match it? Cause really, the BoA advantage with scotia isn't really relevant until I get AP and can travel out of the US again. hmm...

Wow! Thanks for that info. I already have a Scotia account in Canada, so that might've sealed the deal for me right there. lol I would've gone with either one, but this alliance might work to my advantage.
...
now I feel like I'm playing a video game. Defense: +1 !

Sapphire, you made Chase sound good too, but BoA wins. lol :)

CanadaAmerican Banking
Sorry if I hijack this thread, but I'm just wondering, from everyone's experience which is 'better'. Bank of America, or Chase? I don't have a lot of money, so fees would be best if they are low. lol But I'm also wondering about service and that sort of thing. I have both of them within a block of my house. I just can't decide which one to go with.

CanadaWhat are the chances I can stay that long?
I think you should be fine, if you're not staying longer than 6 months, have return information and your ties. The longest I stayed before was a month too though. Since you've got your K-1 information, and you've already gone for a month and returned, I personally don't see it being a problem.

Relax. :P lol
ashenflowersFemaleCanada2010-03-10 23:32:00
CanadaIs this revised plan workable? So many issues!
One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is a co-sponsor. I know you said your husband had family issues, but is there anyone in the U.S. that he knows who might be able to co-sponsor you? Just wondering. It might make things easier. My husband lost his job the day I arrived in California. Seriously. So that pretty much effed up our entire plans, and now we have to get a co-sponsor since he has no income.

Hmm... I think I am 'ok' with the new look, except that I too have a wide screen, so everything is soooo stretched out. My eyeballs have to move a lot farther to read stuff. That means VJ fatigue will come quicker. That makes me sad. :(

Also, there's no easy way to add youtube stuff now (unless you just add it under the media link), but there is for Twitter? eh? lol

Speaking of trips to the US too, one of the forms I missed one of the trips that I'd included on one of the other forms... apparently I forgot about it when filling out one of the forms (it was just a weekend trip to NYC a few years ago). Whoopsy. There was no mention of it though. lol

CanadaWhy all the fuss about the 2010 Census
So you based your judgments on YOU thinking other people are just having fun with the census, instead of taking it seriously yourself, and doing as YOU interpret the instructions, you decide to throw it away and have your statistics, yourself, your entire household not counted? What do you expect to accomplish with that?

That's sad.

btw, I mailed my Census back the day after I received it. As per instructed.

I hope you're not in my neighbourhood Bob.

CanadaAOS Package

My thought- what if you open the envelope and discover something is wrong or something is missing? You can't really go to him and ask him to fix the problem. You would need to tell him you opened it, or you would need to just send it the way it is and then worry about the RFE you'll get. Maybe its better just to leave it sealed. I think I would if I were you... Although that is pretty annoying!

Yeah I wondered about that too. Even if he did something wrong I can't do anything about it really, and really, I doubt he did... he had all the instructions, had a copy of what my husband filled out on the I-864 (so he had my info to put on the form), included a cover letter with it, which he showed me, and is a smart man, and I think is as ####### about things as I am. lol I do think he did it properly, even if he hasn't been involved with this immigration process as much as I have (obviously)... but I AM annoyed about not being able to double check something THAT important. We NEED a co-signer now, and I also hate to think that this extra envelope could go missing. Sigh. The label on the envelope at least has my full name on it, a brief explanation of what's inside, and I hand wrote my A# on the front of it as well. Hopefully that's good enough. I just seriously don't need something stupid like THIS causing an RFE. I'll be so pissed. I don't really want that weighing on my mind. :(

CanadaAOS Package
uuuuuuuuuuuugh.... so we finally got the support documents we needed from our joint sponsor (my husband's dad), but he gave them to us in a sealed envelope. I have no way to really know if he did the forms correctly and confirm that he included all necessary stuff. Also, I don't entirely feel comfortable with having our support info in a separate envelope (labelled, but still), and trusting the lucky one processing our AOS package to open the envelope to see what's inside. Cause let's be honest, they very well might not open a separate envelope.

What do you guys think? Should I go ahead and open the envelope so I can double check what's inside, and include it all together in a nice pile with our other papers? The assumption is that we will not, so I feel like we'd be betraying his trust by opening the envelope. But at the same time, he won't know we did. I dunno. BLAH.

Ok peeps... This is my cover letter for AOS, which I'm planning to mail tomorrow (eep!). I know it's annoying... lol. but I would love if you other AOSers could look it over and make sure I didn't miss anything. I organized everything in the order it's listed (it's roughly the order they ask for it in the instructions). At this point I just don't even know anymore. It's all a jumble. CanadaI-129F question clarification

USCIS isn't going to send the beneficiary anything - the address is (it seems) for informational purposes only. It is probably quite common (military or not) that the address listed on the I-129f ends up changing once the happy couple are reunited. But anywho.. :star:

Her husband is the petitioner I thought... (unless I understood that situation wrong?)... wait... I think I did. Now I'm confused. :P

By "Address in the United States where your fiancé(e) intends to live" you mean where YOU intend to live after moving to the US Tater, and not where your husband is living? Ok sorry... duh, it's been too long since I filled out the 129 F then, and I wasn't thinking from the right perspective... yeah that question doesn't matter as much. Ignore me.

CanadaI-129F question clarification
The only reason I was leery to suggest TBD with a supplemental sheet (I had it there, then thought about it and edited my original post, lol) is that like Inky and I mentioned, they will need to know where to send NOA2s and such. Like Inky said as well, they are familiar with the situation of military personnel, and probably realize the address will change after marriage.
ashenflowersFemaleCanada2010-03-24 13:19:00
CanadaI-129F question clarification
Ours was a little weird too. I put his parents address (where he was living during the K-1 process) on the forms, but knowing he'd be getting his own place just before I moved there. You can update the address at POE (so long as you don't get a lazy CBP like I did, who doesn't want to bother with it....). They will want to know where to mail stuff to him though, like the NOA2...

I would suggest the address in the barracks. After you get married, you can put the new address on the AOS forms, or if necessary, submit the form needed to update your address at that time (I forget right now which one that is).

CanadaWhile I'm sitting here waiting...

Huh, interesting. And yeah I suppose I should be grateful that it's only 8 hours. It still seems like such an eternity away since I'm so close to my family here in Canada. lol

So how did you guys go about planning a wedding? Me and my fiance haven't made ANY plans yet since we really have no idea when we'll be able to have one. When you guys had your second marriage in Canada did you guys do that renewing your vows thing? Or did you just have a reception? I'm just curious to get some ideas for myself :) We talked about just having a courthouse wedding with just immediate family attending... Every little girls dream right? Not quite. We're pretty broke after all of these immigration fees too right off the bat so we may have to do a bigger wedding later on regardless!!

Thanks for the heads up on the full sheet version of a birth certificate. Honestly I had no idea these even existed believe it or not. I've only had the card one as far as I can remember. I'll have to ask my mom if she ever got the other one because I bet she'd still have it somewhere. She's handy like that.

We had to settle for just a 'parents only' courthouse wedding. I was actually really disappointed to be honest, but it was still a nice day. Thankfully the courthouse here is BEAUTIFUL, so we were really lucky. I was really sad that our friends/other family couldn't be there, but thems the breaks. lol In the end, we didn't go into debt over the wedding, and we are married. lol
We can't afford to do the 2nd wedding/reception/vow renewal, though originally we wanted to. We also couldn't afford a honeymoon. Ya just have to prepare to sacrifice a little I guess. And don't expect as many presents...

CanadaWhile I'm sitting here waiting...
Good luck. :) Others have already wonderfully answered most of your questions, but I just wanted to add that if you don't have the long form of your birth certificate (the full page registration version, not just the card size) you will also need that. You can order it easily online here https://www.orgforms...tart.do?lang=en It is $35 for your first copy. It will probably arrive within a week (they're amazingly efficient at getting them sent out.)

You DO need the police certificate, regardless of whether your a criminal or not. It basically proves that you're NOT. Get 2 copies. I agree about waiting on the medical. It's nice to get it out of the way, but at the same time it's best to wait as long as you can since it is only valid for one year. Doing it about 3 weeks - 1 month before the interview is my suggestion. Or basically make your appointment after you send back the Packet 3. I don't recall how far in advance you have to book it. I think just 2 weeks or so.

Also, regarding the move... 8 hours is lucky! Just to put things in perspective, many of us have had to move from coast to coast. My husband (then fiancé! lol) and I had a 4-5 day drive (or 12-15 hour plane journey from door to door) between our homes. I would relish an 8 hr drive! You shouldn't have TOO much culture shock, but be aware of foods that you won't get in the U.S. that you have in Canada. It sounds silly, but it's suddenly a big impact when your favourite comfort foods aren't around anymore and you have to substitute. I.e. Tim Horton's, President's Choice brands, and so on. *wistful sigh*

Spend as much time with your friends and family now as possible. Plan ways to stay in touch; post cards, letters, facebook, email, make a photo blog to show them your new home.... whatever works. :)

Also, don't forget that you're getting married. lol You have to figure out what you plan to do for your wedding. How big, how small, who's invited, where will it be (venue-wise), will you have another bigger one back in Canada later on (many k-1s do this).

People say it's not necessary for the fiancé to attend the interview. While that's absolutely true, I can't imagine going through that without him with me. It was great to have him there, and a good experience for us to have together. If you can reasonably manage for him to be with you without too much hardship, I'd suggest it. :)

Again, good luck. :)

Canadapossible to cross the border in wife's dad's car?
This is exactly what we did. We borrowed my parent's vehicle (which was actually jointly in the name of my dad and my sister in law, and my sister in law wasn't even in Canada anymore either... lol) so that I could move my stuff. It was much bigger than my car so it fit more, which I was leaving behind for my parents anyway. I didn't bring anything either, though my dad did make a phone call to the insurance company just to make sure we didn't have to do anything with them (I wasn't listed on the insurance, but since it was temporary, they didn't seem to mind??). At my POE they asked me if I was importing the car, and I explained that I wasn't, because we're just borrowing it and my parents are coming down to pick it up. Which they did when they flew down to attend our wedding, and then drove the vehicle back to Canada. It was absolutely fine.

It shouldn't be a problem, but it might be a good idea to bring along a letter of permission or something, in case you get someone at POE that isn't as understanding.

CanadaMoney!!
Did they give the other money in 2009? or is it all in 2010? One thing they could consider is giving 1/2 to you, and 1/2 to your husband. My father in law is helping us out that way. Once we reach the 'max' for gifts to my husband, he's going to give to me (on paper at least). And yes, the giver is the one taxed, as far as I understand it.

I didn't get an I-94 when I entered on my K-1. Really wish those CBPs knew what they were doing.. lol sigh. Anyways, I went to a deferred inspection site, like what Darnell mentioned and they were able to give me one. They might be able to reissue your I-94, and/or just correct it somehow. It's a good idea, and worth a shot if there's one close by.
ashenflowersFemaleCanada2010-03-27 23:54:00
CanadaSSN

Just for the record....not all offices will give you the SSN over the phone. The Erie, PA office and many others require you to come to the office in person, with ID, before they'll give you your number. I can't imagine any clerk giving you the number over the phone - there's no way to verify your identity.

Your office may have done it, but others should be prepared to make that second trip if they need the number immediately, just in case (though, in most cases, you won't need the number immediately).

It was just a suggestion. If they need the number that desperately, but like you said, in most cases they won't. I never bothered to try to call to find out the number. I know they said I could go to the DMV if I needed it to try to get my license and they'd be able to look it up in their system after 1 week if needed.
