CanadaPOE process question
Using clear bins instead of boxes if at all possible is handy as well. I got lucky (or ended up with a lazy border crossing, not sure), but they didn't ask for a list, or anything, and didn't search the car. So it could go either way. Then again, at my POE they turned out to be idiots and 'forgot' to give me the VERY important I-94, so make sure you get that. They're not used to issuing I-94s if you're driving through and you're Canadian. Don't trust them to know what they're doing. They probably don't.

Also, have the list just in case, but don't be surprised if you happen to not be asked for it.

CanadaThanks guys...
I love facebook. When I was still in Canada we used it as a great way to keep all our events in order (we were a pretty social group.. lol), and share pics from the events later... and now it's a great way to still share pics with people, and links, and stories and updates about what I'm doing, and to get the same from them. I have family and friends scattered around the world, and I can't think of a better way to keep in touch with everyone at the same time, in the same place. I agree that you have to keep the applications and groups and what not in check, and make sure that you keep yourself protected.

CanadaCanadians in Dallas
I drove through Dallas on my way to California, if that counts. ;) jk, I know it doesn't. But good luck! You could try searching online for a local Canadian group. I know there's one on facebook (yes, the dreaded facebook) for Canadians in Southern California.

CanadaNOT Wyatt's Torch...
I saw the torch too! It went through my home town. It was kind of funny, because to be honest, I based my time-off around the holidays on where the torch was going to be! HAH.
It was going through my hometown on the 23rd (where my parents are), and then London on the 24th (Christmas Eve!)... that would've been the complete opposite of where I was planning to be for the holidays.... so I took an extra day off work (edit: technically I didn't.. I came back a day early too, so I just 'shifted' my time off... lol) and went to my parents' place early, and saw it go through there. lol I missed the bigger celebration in London, but that's ok. I was 'front row' and got some pics too :)

The smiley Coca-Cola truck leading the way with my mom's flag waving in front... hahaha

CanadaWhat to get a Canadian man for Valentine's Day?
I'm going to guess he's still in Canada at the moment? If so, and you're still dealing with the distance, I'd suggest getting (or knitting!) him a scarf or gloves to keep him warm during the winter while you're not together, or check out this website for some good ideas. :) http://www.lovingfro.../giftideas.html

If you guys ARE together (yay!) you could still probably do the above, but I'd suggest something you guys could do together. Like maybe a cooking class or something. :) Or like others have suggested, something that is meaningful based on your relationship and memories. :)

CanadaThe Great Dinner vs Supper Debate
I rarely use the term supper, but if I do, I just mean dinner (i.e. the evening/night meal). I've always called lunch 'lunch', or 'brunch', depending on if I've had breakfast or not. lol (I'm surprised no one else has brought up the term 'brunch' yet!)

btw... should the 'What's for Dinner' thread be re-named 'What's for Supper'? :P

CanadaCanadian vs. American PB, and grocery stores

there is Fresh and Easy too.. it is a fairly new chain but they have lots of stores already.. they are kind of like a Trader Joes/Whole Foods but with slightly cheaper prices

the closest one to me is 30 miles away :(

We have SuperFresh here that carries President's Choice brand. I'm pretty sure its the same as what you would find in Loblaws. Not sure if you have those in your neck of the woods though....

I don't think we have SuperFresh, as I've never heard of it. Around her we've got Vons, Albertson's, Ralph's, Trader Joes and a WholeFoods. Those seem to be the main. I'm starting to find some store brands in those that aren't too bad. I am one of the lucky ones in California with year-round seasonal produce, though honestly, I was never one to notice what was or wasn't in season. LOL

I miss the Real Canadian Superstore as well. Those were great. Though I admit I'm really liking Trader Joes!

CanadaCanadian vs. American PB, and grocery stores

Hmmm I guess that would be the proportion of Canadian to American posts.

No, not at all. It's the posts of those who are actually making rational discussions, regardless of where... not silly things like ' you guys spell color wrong'. Not directing that specifically at the person that said it, but you know what I mean. It's not really something that is even worth arguing about.

I REALLY miss Loblaws and No Frills, and especially the President's Choice brand. Nothing compares.

Trying to come on here and tell a bunch of Canadians that their food and grocery stores suck is kind of a dumb idea btw... just my 2 cents on that.

Since it is just the two of us and Joe has to work, I'll be making a turkey breast with stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash and something green:-) instead of a whole turkey (although my favourite is dark meat).

I miss the Thanksgivings we used to have when my Mom was still alive - she would invite anyone she knew who didn't have a family to go to or who were living on their own to join us - often students from Queen's University who couldn't afford to go home for Thanksgiving. We never had fewer than 10 people with us for Thanksgiving and often more. We always had turkey, stuffing (prepared in the bird), mashed potatoes and gravy, mashed turnips, peas, glazed carrots, a relish tray and a selection of homemade pies - lemon meringue, apple and pumpkin - for dessert. Our favourite dessert was called a 'yes' - "Would you like a piece of lemon meringue pie, apple pie or pumpkin pie?" "Yes!" - so you got a small slice of each yes.gif .

Awwww... that's really sweet smile.gif

PUMPKIN PIE.

mmmm I heart.gif me some pumpkin pie...

This is technically a 'Christmas' episode, but still... for you turkey lovers (I'm a dark meat turkey eater myself... we used to have live, wild turkeys my parents old house.. but we never ate them... does that make it weird? lol)

CanadaReturn of ExpressPost question?
My guess is you'll get a variety of info on this. I, personally, have had no issues tracking items with Canada Post. I have tracked several items to the U.S., and my passport/visa from Montreal as well. It usually only updates once a day, at the end of the day, give or take. That's what I've noticed. I usually track online.

CanadaPeople? I POEd...
awww.. congrats LGG. and way to go Kitty! My cat also made me very proud when I had to transport her on a 5 day drive. lol The first day she was a little crazy, but after that she was fine, and just meowed when we drove too fast (LOL), or when she figured it was time to stop for the night. By the end of it she was rolling around on her back and everything in the carrier. haha it was awesome. I love animals, and love even more when they surprise us with their extra-awesomeness. :)
Glad you made it through the rudeness and found SOME niceness and had a good POE. Welcome to the U.S.!

CanadaHome Alarm Systems
I didn't have one at my place(s) in Canada at all, except the last place I lived, but that's because my roommates had it installed on their house. I would take a stroll around your neighbourhood and see what things are like, or how many other people seem to have alarm systems (see if you can see the stickers or the signs around there).

I personally won't ever get one until we have a HOUSE (which we don't) that we actually own, with valuable stuff in it. If anyone tried to break into our apartment to steal stuff, I'd just laugh at them. It'd just be more of a pain in the #### for us to replace the stuff we all mostly got for free anyways

Though if anyone steals my laptop... :bonk: :ranting:

CanadaUrgent help, guys!!!

Not positive as my memory isn't so hot on some things lol but I think when I came here on the K-1 Visa I had to send them a copy of the Visa as it ( the K-1) acted as proof that I was eligible to work here for up to 90 days and also that I had used it to become a resident until I file for my GC
I apologize if this info isn't correct and Im sure someone else will chirp in with an answer for you

Just for anyone else reading this, this isn't correct. K-1 is not a 90 day work authorization. You still have to send a copy of the I-94 and the K-1 visa, but you can't get EI with a K-1 until you send them a copy of your EAD.

CanadaPatience is a Virtue?
Just figured I'd send out the 'good news bears' to tell the story of how I got my SSN.

I waited until after we were married and had my marriage certificate with me. I figured why not? Cause what can I do with an SSN anyways. Get a driver's license? Meh. I just use my Ontario one for now. And my husband was always around to drive anyways, if I felt worried about driving without the Cali license. Get a bank account? Meh. No money anyways. So yeah, I took my time. lol

I entered the US on Jan 3rd, applied for my SSN last Friday. LOTS of time for me to be in the system. lol I brought along our marriage certificate showing my name change, my passport with I-94 and K-1 visa, my birth certificate (for something extra), the sheet proving that we as K1s can get a SSN, though they didn't ask for it, and my pre-filled out application (Form SS-5). They did have applications in the office as well.

I waited for about 25-30 mins, when they finally opened some extra windows (about 10 ppl were in the waiting room), and was out within 45 mins total. No questions asked about the name change, and my SSN is in my married name. Nor was there any hassle given about the visa situation. I received my SSN in the mail today, stamped with the ugly 'VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION' #######.

Done and done.

Well, except for when I go back and get a new one without that DHS stuff on it once I receive my EAD (right?).

But still! SSN achieved.

CanadaCanadian Anthem to possibly change
I think you ladies mean mail'person'. Ahem.

Also, I've been hearing about this on twitter, and tweeted (I'm so hip), that we should call it 'all our peeps command'. Apparently I'm not the only one who's suggested that. Then it turned into calling it 'Yo Canada!'. Which then turned into a suggestion (by me) to have one artist of every music genre rewrite the lyrics and see what we liked best. Country version, rap version, pop version, indie, classical... I think it'd be awesome.

CanadaCanadian Obtaining a Florida DL - Lessons Learned
haha! I've found Canada certainly has it's fair share of people who are thrown into the mix without proper training.

That said. I have my first beef with the DMV. Actually, to be fair, it's a beef with California (another one!? no way!). The government is so broke that to save money they close all the DMVs on Fridays. So I just got my SSN today, and want to move ahead with license plans. I can make an appointment online... fine. But I wanted to go to the DMV office to pick up a copy of the handbook so I could start studying for the written test. I can't. It's online yes, but I want the physical version my hands. Now I have to wait for Monday. SIGH.
