Sept 2 would probably be ok. My hubby to be works 12 hour swing shifts. I know he mentioned that one of the other operators will be on vacation at that time. So he could very well be working.

We could start with lunch and carry on until we are done. Maybe meet at a Denny's in Schaumburg. I think I know where there is one and I don't think it's too hard to find. Let me check out the maps and see about that.

What does everyone else think?

There is a Denny's at 1700 E Higgins Rd in Schaumburg. Think about it..... good.gif

Anyone care to share what's so special about Chicago? I've been there a few times...yes, the city, and while it had a nice skyline, and it was by water...it looked to me like every other large city of history that's by water. I don't get it. laughing.gif Things I've read here on the Canada forum suggest that large cities have great places to eat, lovely museums, perhaps parks, art galleries, lots of shopping and people watching....something I personally only like to do once every ten years.

I'm not saying I hated Chicago. I enjoyed my day and early evening. I just found it to be like lots of large cities which I don't like anyway. Dark gloomy city streets because the buildings are so tall sunlight has trouble getting through...garbage in alleys, people tripled parked, people rushing back and forth to work. WAY too much noise and stink. A riverfront with lots of green space, boats, yahts etc. lots of good places to eat. Frankly, it was exactly like so many large cities to me.

The sheer size of the city freaks me out and getting to it, even by train was a bother. Been there...done that...unless I'm missing something!

That's why I don't care much about going there Carla laughing.gif

Been living 26 years of my life in Montreal, and got my load of skyscrapers, traffic, expensive restaurants and museums! I got all I need in the burbs here ! The only thing I want to do is go to the aquarium and the planetarium. I really enjoyed those in Montreal and I am planning on trying it here. Now to convince my hubby to drive downtown...... unsure.gif He's a country side boy from Michigan and to be anywhere in that traffic is a big no no....

Larry took my daughter, his youngest son and I to the aquarium in March when we were here. You'd love it Mephys. Why drive when you can probably take the Metra in and grab a trolley car over to the aquarium. At least, I think you can....*giggles*

CanadaWhat does your family call you?
Being the last of 13 kids, most of my siblings refer to me as Brat. They paved the way for me to be able to do much more than they did while living at home.

A few friends call me KelKat. For the most part though, ppl call me by my name - Kelly.

As for my daugther, I thought I had given her a name that couldn't be shortened - Kelsie. unsure.gif guess who shortened it first - blush.gif . I call her Kels, baby girl, mewtew (must have come from the days when she was watching something on tv), and of course when I'm nuts with her she gets Kelsie Irene Alice......

CanadaMedical insurance
When I read this post it reminded me to ask my hubby about getting me on his insurance. He went on Tuesday and spoke to HR only to find out that we may have to wait until November because he should have added me within 30 days of our marriage. The woman he spoke to suggested he go back yesterday and talk to the manager of the insurance policy. So he did. He came home last night and informed me that she has added me to his insurance. So I'm now covered under his policy. I just need him to bring home the information so I know what is covered, etc.

I find boys need to slow cook about stuff.. you pop an idea in their brains.. leave it stew for a few days and they "generally" return to you in a few days and say "you know what.. i've had this GREAT idea" (totally forgetting its your idea in the first place) laughing.gif

This is what my mother did when she wanted something done on our house. She would plant the idea in my dad's head and a few days later he would come back and say to her "let's do this to the house." My mom always said "If you want something, make him think it was his idea." Seemed to work for her.

I haven't had to try this - yet!!!!

Hi BH45,

Congratulations on passing your written driver's test in IL. Yes, driving is one of those skills that once you learn it, you won't forget it (though it takes practice too, lol). Good luck too, with your road test (if there is one), and eventually getting your IL driver's license too.

By the way, couldn't they just transfer your Canadian license directly in IL, without any testing required? I guess it doesn't work like that in IL, unlike NYS?

Ant

No road test...at least not this time around. I know my hubby had to do a written test to renew his license last week. I don't think road tests happen until age 75, or at least that is what a lady at the DMV told me today. This is so different from Canada. I've had my license for 30 yrs without any tests to renew. Please let it be the same here for me.

CanadaIf it wasn't for immigration
I lived with the father of my daughter for 10 years less 2 days. I didn't see the need for a piece of paper and neither did he. It still cost us $$$$ when we separated.

Your question, Nevada, has me thinking that I kept my maiden name for just that reason. I would rather have been allowed to live here common-law with Larry. As everyone else has said, immigration had other ideas and forced the marriage. I'm happy in my marriage so that's ok. I just believe that if I'd had a choice - I'd be living common-law again.

Laura, my dear,

This is not the easiest transition. You have just moved from little brantford, ontario, home of THE GREAT ONE, to the most densly populated area in the whole united states.

For some, home sickness comes adn then goes for good. For some, it lasts a long time and for others it doesn't. I've lived here for almost two years and although my home sick has lessened, I still get disgusting boughts of it where I am convinced I might have made tehw rong choice.

The positive thing to note is that I always come back off of that cloud and see reality. Life moves on. Things are constantly changing. You have to move towards a point where you are truly happy in your new surroundings. I know that for me, specifically, once I move to somewhere here in NJ or PA that I'm totally comfortable living then I will improve 100% on my feelings towards living here. If I'm going to sit in traffic for hours each day, then when I get home and on the weekends, I want PEACE. So now I know what I need to do to move towards my goal of living somewhere quaint and that doesn't induce stress. I moved here to be with my love, not to gets ulcers and stress headaches.

Things will fall into place. Maybe your homesickness will never truly go away. Who the hell knows! Do know though, that it gets easier with time. You just broke off your relationship with your country and you may feel like she's mad with you. She is not. You guys have just decided to take time apart smile.gif But she still loves you and will always be there for you.

Well said Treble....thank you.
