CanadaNew here - introducing myself!
Welcome Melissa to VJ, especially the Canada Forum. They are a great bunch of helpful, funny people. It's nice to have such a good group of folks helping along the way. I'm glad I found them when I did.

CanadaSarcasm
The only sarcasm I seem to have come into contact with so far living here has been in my own house. I look at the source and then turn around and feed back to them some gentle loving suggestions. So far, it's not been too bad. I only hope that it stays that way.

CanadaKitty Woes
While I was growing up, we always had a dog. Then, of course, I moved out on my own and had no pets for 12 years. After my dad passed away, Kelsie (my daugther) and I moved back into our house in the country. She had been after me for a few months to get her a kitty. After we moved, a friend of mine had a barn full of kitties. We went out and she picked her kitty. We've had him for 6 years. When the time came for the move, she remained in Canada with my sister and her hubby - who dislikes cats - who have 2 big dogs. So Salem came with me to IL. He's forever pouncing on me or licking my nose early in the morning cause he's looking to be fed. He doesn't go too far from me and I love him dearly. At least I got to bring one of my too most treasured gifts with me.

Somewhere there is a purr-fect kitty for you and Nick. You'll find each other. Best of luck at the rescue shelter later.

CanadaCanadians and Thunderstorms
I can tell you Mephys....Northern Ontario doesn't get these types of t-storms either. However, we did have a twister go through about 8 - 10 miles north of Cochrane one year.

I was blown away by the constant lightening happening. We didn't see too many strikes just lots of heat lightening.

I remember being in Edmonton, well Sherwood Park to be exact, when lightening hit a micro-wave tower. Shook the ground for miles around it. Not fun !!

I'm glad you made it home safely. Sounds like you have a hubby like mine "It's just a thunderstorm".....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..... laughing.gif

Hey Maeve

I'm in the same situation as your hubby. My hubby works 12 hour days so I sit here in our apartment reading and watching TV.

I decided to get involved in the church by volunteering. It's great and the church secretary thought she'd help me out by asking me to head up a group of people to help an elder of the church who is moving. She is unable to take everything so we are going to try and sell what is left.

Now that I have my SSN, I'm going to go to the library to get a library card and see what they have there.

He needs to spread his wings and get out there. I'm sure he'll find something to do and occupy his time.

CanadaTravelled here together?
My hubby came up and we drove back together - in 2 vehicles but we travelled together. We also had our church wedding while he was in Canada.

CanadaU.S. employment wages
You guys are scaring me. I left a job where I had 8 weeks vacation, 13 paid holidays a year, and was making $23 an hour. And I was only 9 years from retiring. wacko.gif

I've a friend here who works for Uncle Sam. She told me that the starting yearly wage was $36,000 and after 1 year it goes to $47,500. I could work for that kind of money. It's more than what my yearly wage was in Northern Ontario.

Right now, I just need to get through the next few months waiting for approval and such. We hope to file my AOS/EAD/AP documents by mid-September.

Hey All

I've been reading and reviewing banks and what they offer. My eyes are getting tired and my brain muddled from all the information.

Any suggestions - keep in mind that I want to be able to transfer money easily between the US and Canada?

Thanks,

CanadaSSN in New Jersey
GM Mrs. Laura biggrin.gif

When I went to apply for my SSN, I filled everything out - except that part - took my passport with the K-1/I-94 with me to the office. The lady took my passport and the application input the information into the computer. I received my SSN yesterday in the mail. It says right on it that it's only valid for work with DHS authorization.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting yours.

Sept 2 would probably be ok. My hubby to be works 12 hour swing shifts. I know he mentioned that one of the other operators will be on vacation at that time. So he could very well be working.

We could start with lunch and carry on until we are done. Maybe meet at a Denny's in Schaumburg. I think I know where there is one and I don't think it's too hard to find. Let me check out the maps and see about that.

What does everyone else think?

There is a Denny's at 1700 E Higgins Rd in Schaumburg. Think about it..... good.gif
