Before or after they go on coffee break. laughing.gif Keep phoning and when they won't take your calls, visit their houses. You don't have to do anything, just park on the street in front. They'll get the message. devil.gif

If you do have your interviews the same day or even a day apart you definately should meet up. 3 of us from VJ did when we had our interviews, well 2 of us had our interviews and the 3rd was picking up her visa the same day. Was really great to meet in person.

Karen you are in a great position, you have something you like already so don't stress over this one. I know what you mean on the interview thing as I too need to get my a$$ in gear and get seriously looking for a job, but alas I am the ultimate PROCRASTINATOR truely I am lol. Actually I am trying to get a job as a secretary in a school hopefully 10 month or 11 month position so I can have lots of holidays off, but having never worked in a school don't know if that is possible, time will tell.

Good luck on the interview and I know you will knock em dead.

Canadaquick question
My police check took 5 days for them to mail it to me, but I could have gone to pick it up sooner, had I had a car available to me!

The birthcertificates have sped up quite a bit since I needed mine though. I had to call my MPP and have them harrass the Ontario Registrar to hurry the frak up with mine.

Canadaquick question
If you're in the GTA, the best place to get your police certificate is from the Commissionaire's office, when I got mine it was only $25.

CanadaMarried Two Years Ago Then Moved Overseas
Call the consulate in Amsterdam, they may still have it on file and you may be able to complete it there.

Why would he get a work visa, if he can get a green card based on marriage? Work permits are temporary, and if they find out he's got a spouse in the US, he may not even be eligible for a P1 (whatever that is)

sooo not gonna say anything about all the lying think everyone covered that hehe, but i do have a question now that i read all this, i visited my fiance for 5 months had no problem getting through, didn't have a job at the time but still they did not question anything, well, i came back for 3 months, and and we decided i would come visit for a month or so, i had a job, but no letter from them, well, i get to the airport, 6 in the morning, and of course, i got denied, i hadn't bought my return ticket yet because we weren't sure of the date i would return exactly, and of course that looked suspicious, on top of the fact that he bought the ticket, they didn't like that much, so i got to go to the little room, fun, and i sat there, they left me for last, everyone else was gone and 2 hours later they tell me im not going through because i dont have ties to canada, well, its 8 in the morning, they called my work, not open yet of course so that didn't help me, tried calling my landlord, no answer, so again, everything against me there lol sooooo my question now, when i do my packet 3 forms i see where it says have you ever been denied entry blah blah blah, ok, so is this incident going to be a problem, i mean, i had ties, but couldn't prove them cause it was so early noone would answer their phones and i didn't think to get letters cause i had no problems before going back and forth, and i wasn't at vj yet sad.gif so is this going to be a problem if i just explain i didn't know i needed documentation with me of ties to canada and it was so early that the POE guys couldn't get ahold of anyone to prove my story so they thought i was lying?

i doubt it will be a problem. We were denied entry and the officer who interviewed us for our K-3 in Montreal simply asked us about it, basically told us that things like that happen, and then told us it was expunged as he waved his golden scepter of forgiveness.

yeah, it won't be a problem. I'd bet there are more than a dozen people here in the Canada forum who've been denied entry and later applied for visas of some sort and got them. As long as you are truthful about it and put it on the forms you're fine. If you don't put it on the forms, they will know about it because its on your record. They only ask you about it to find out if you'll be truthful or not.

Truth is always the best policy when it comes to all things immigration.

1) Just wondering if there is anything I need to bring besides myself, passport, x-ray and the brown packet?

you might want some clothes for after you arrive in the US. They frown upon public nudity down here. wink.gif

2) Also, what is the I-94? is it some form I have to fill out and take with me, or a form I fill out at customs?

The I-94 is a form you have to fill out before you reach the customs wicket guy. It'll be on a table somewhere with all the other customs forms, somewhere just past the ticketng/check-in. just ask an airport employee where to find them if you don't see the huge crowd of people hunched over the small table filling out their forms.

3) I have around $10,000 worth of camera equipment :/ I guess I'll have to pay duty on this huh?

Nope, you do not have to pay duty on personal goods when you are crossing with a visa. You do have to declare them as personal goods on the customs declaration form though.

the process for K3 has changed considerably as well, so read the guide thoroughly to figure out which of the 2 is the better visa.

And I must say that your friend at the border has no clue about the CR1 or K3 visa, or the process involved.

CanadaU.S. employment wages
Yeah, a lot of new immigrants get that cold bucket o' water in the face feeling after they've lived in their spouse's city for a while. Its a whooooooooole lot different when you're just visiting, even if you're lucky like us Canucks and can stay for extended periods. I've a friend who somehow believed the hype that the US is the land of milk n honey, and then she tried to find a job and affordable housing in the same area where she wouldn't have to worry about leaving her car in a parking lot, or herself to walk down the street at dusk tongue.gif wink.gif She really knew nothing about the US at all, despite having lived her entire life only an hour and a half from the border. She somehow thought it was exactly like Canada. wacko.gif

CanadaU.S. employment wages
I haven't found taxes to be any less here in North Carolina than in Ontario, and here in NC I have fewer government services available to me for my money.

At my current rate of pay here in North Carolina, (which sucks btw) my income tax rate is actually more than someone in Ontario making the same amount of money. And here in NC, I have to pay for my own health insurance + health services. Not so in Canada. And that's a HUGE expense, when both my husband and I have chronic illnesses and need to see doctors regularly. Lately we've been having to decide whether to pay doctor bills, or put full tank of gas in the car. As it happened, I paid the doctor bill with my credit card, and will wait til next month to decide how to pay that sad.gif

In the richest country in the world, they really should be able to have universal healthcare. Where the hell is all my tax money going to anyway? Inquiring minds wanna know.

yeah, the other day at work I was bored and saw an ad on MSNBC for a 7 day trip to London and Edinburgh for only $1179 per person, air and hotel included. I almost cried, because there was a time when I would have been able to say "holy #######, let's go!" and I could have paid for it right then.

Now I can't even consider it without saving my pennies for about 2 years and sacrificing movie nights out.

CanadaU.S. employment wages
Except that as a non-citizen, you couldn't work for Uncle Sam. wink.gif

The job I currently have here in North Carolina, I'm making probably $20k less than a comparable job would get in the GTA where I used to live. And because we pay state income taxes, my tax rate is the same as it was back in Ontario, but with fewer government benefits to show for my money. Plus, I pay $400+ per month for healh insurance premiums! And of course vacation time allowances suck, and there's only about half the number of "stat" holidays like I used to get up home.

A friend of mine who used to frequent VJ whose husband lives in Charlotte and she lives in the GTA (she never did move down here in the end), was trying to find jobs in Charlotte and just any state in the southeast, and typically came up about $20k less than what she was making in Ontario in a programmer type field. The southeast just generally does not pay well, for anything it seems! Even a friend of mine whose a local, with a diploma in computer programming and networking makes about $25k to $30k less than friends of mine with similar jobs up in Ontario.

I dunno about other states, but the income taxes here in NC suck, the labour laws suck, the benefits suck, and the wages suck. Oh, and we even have to pay property taxes on our CARS! My head almost exploded when James first told me that!

Which is why of course we're trying to move out of state, and eventually trying to make our way to Ontario. Cost of healthcare here sux, and we're not getting any younger.

I switched because I got a new job. To be honest though I did not like cigna at all. My husband was paying $320 a month and our copays were still ridiculous.

I'd take Cigna any day over the crappy Wellpath program I've got now!

But that still wouldn't get us any GPs in this town. They keep leaving to go elsewhere, so any time either my husband or I have to make an appointment at the clinic, there's only PAs available, because there's only one MD left there. wacko.gif

And I know more people who were almost killed by the local hospital than I know who've actually been helped there. Its a scary scary place I tell ya! Yeah, I'd rather go to the vet too. She's nice. Yea that wouldn't work for us. Plus my husband is doing well at his company. I don't think he'd be willing to give that up just to be unemployed in another country.

I just need to accept that, and I almost have.

You can still do it, but you have to sponsor him and apply "outland". Once his PR has been approved, as soon as he "lands" he's legal to work. And most spousal PR applications are approved and completed in less than one year. Its mostly the independent immigration that takes more than that, or if you for some reason decided to pick up and go back to Canada and dragged him with you and applied "inland". THAT would take a year or more. But outland, as evidenced by DeadPool, takes a lot less time than even US immigration does.

Check out the forums at http://roadtocanada.com for timelines and and info and such.

James and I are starting the Canadian immigration stuff again, but his will take a year or more, only because he's got a (misfiled) criminal record that we can't seem to get fixed tongue.gif So the Rehabilitation paperwork is adding an extra year to our processing. Hopefully I'll be back home before I'm 43. My 41th birthday is next week, so fingers crossed!
RebaFemale02008-08-22 18:49:00
CanadaThere's a Maple Leaf on my Stars-and-Stripes!
If you're applying specifically for just for a work visa, yeah, it can take up to a year or more to process. AND, if you're a spouse of a Canadian citizen that entered the country, got married and then applied for PR in-land, the aforementioned AIP can take longer than that even. Or not be rec'd at all. Currently there's a woman on Road To Canada whose been there 4 years and unable to work because her application was denied, but they're in appeal limbo (another difference between Canada and US adjustment to PR, in Canada you can appeal the decision).

Outland applications are best really for spouses, as evidenced by DeadPool's experience of only 6 months. Inland applications can take twice as long, sometimes longer if there are complications.

And CIC also has a habit of losing things, not everyone's applications go as smoothly.

CanadaWhat About DUIs?
File sharing isn't as common with other countries like it is between Canada and hte US, so the odds of another country scanning your passport and seeing any existing charges is not likely. Canada and the US have full police file sharing so as soon as they scan your ID at the border, or enter your name into the computer, they'll see your history.

However, I did read maybe last year that the UK will be entering into our file sharing, so soon if you have a criminal conviction you won't be able to travel to the UK either. Which could possibly fan out to the entire EU, I dunno how their immigration and borders work.

The US has been known to ban Canadians from entering the country if they had a minor charge for marijuana possession 20+ years ago. People here at VJ over the years have even had visas denied because they admitted to inhaling during high school or college. Why? Because the US views people who use drugs as (except in the case of anyone running for president of course!) undesirables. Even if it was several decades ago, and you have no criminal record. Just admitting that you've used even once could make you inadmissable!
