Awe.. I heart.gif Charleston...

This will be my first trip there. It's got a few of my favourite things. History. Pirates. And ghosts. And there's an aircraft carrier for James wink.gif

Hopefully the weather will be nice and not rainy, so that we can maybe get some photos and video while we're there.

We're going to Charleston SC for a few days at the end of the month, and we're going on one of those ghost walking tours, plus plan to see the aircraft carrier, and Fort Sumpter while we're there. Maybe we'll catch a few ghosties smile.gif

A few weeks after my Gramma died, she came to tell me she was better now, and don't worry about her. I was sleeping on the couch at my parents house (t'was after I'd moved out, was back for a visit) and she came and sat down on the coffee table to tell me.

My friend Sharon did the same thing after she died.

James' Dad bugs the ####### out of my dogs here at the house. Sometimes George will just stand there looking in the kitchen, and tilt her head, but she won't go in there. Bruno used to growl at Pops, but not anymore, they get along ok now.

The first Christmas after Pops died, we were all sitting there in the living room opening our presents, and then all of a sudden, James, his brother Randy and I all turned and looked at each other. We could all smell Pops' cologne, but we didn't say anything until later because we didn't know if Mother had noticed it, and didn't want to get her upset.

Blame Krikit for this one! wink.gif

Ok, for all you ghost hunters and paranormal freaks, tell us your ghost stories here, and what would you do if you were a member of a ghost hunting team. Would you be more like TAPS, or more like Paranormal State?

Me, I'm a TAPS kinda gal. I look to try and debunk things in a more scientific manner than just walk in somewhere and go "ooooooo, I feel something evil is here" wink.gif

I grew up in a haunted house, and the house I'm in now is haunted by my father-in-law. He died here in the house about 4 years ago, and he wanders around every now and again still. He even fixed the overhead light in the kitchen one day while we were out! smile.gif

Even gone for 10 weeks, planting anything in a container would just be a waste of money IMO. Wait until you get back and can enjoy the blooms first hand.

CanadaAnyone a gardener?
If you're not even going to be home to water anything for 4 months, I wouldn't advise planting anything until you get back, and then plant some annuals that'll bloom thru the fall. Containers need extra care and watering, as they will dry out quicker than planting in the ground. Unless you're somewhere that will get regular rainfall, and whoever is minding your apartment will make sure the plants are not getting blown over or drying out or crowded out by weeds, I don't think much of anything will survive in a container for 4 months without care.

you could have filed an outland applicaiton for him, even though he was physically in Canada at the time. Outland only takes about 6 months or so, because unlike USCIS CIC wants to actually re-unite families quickly. But if you're filing inland, there's no reason to speed up the process, because you're already together. If you follow.

I never had options as a teenager when a family vacation was planned, full stop. EVERYbody had to go, whether we wanted to or not. Whether I had gone and made plans of my own with my boyfriend, or didn't plan ahead and had no spending money, we kids had to go regardless.

Stuff her in the car, once she gets across the border and gets to see her old friends, she'll probably have changed her mind.

attempting to get a non-immigrant (ie: work) visa with the intent of getting married and then applying to AOS is also a dicy situation. Not all work visas/status are dual intent, and if they deem that you had intent to immigrate, they can deny your application. They can evn deny your work visa application if they feel that you have intent to immigrate thru improper channels.

Your best bet is either of the marriage based visas, K1 or K3/CR1.

I had to live with my Mum for a few months while I waited for my K3 visa. And I was 38 at the time. We do what we gotta do.

I'm not sure, but I think a USC would have to be an LPR for 2 years in Canada before they're eligible to file a DCF petition for their spouse. Check with the US consulate on that.

If a US citizen intends to stay in Canada beyond the allowed 6 months, and stay to apply for permanent residency, they have to first get a visitor record at the border that will allow them to remain.

Emancipation, my only suggestion to your friend would be to check out the forums at Road To Canada for processing timelines. I have NOT seen any "inland" apps that take less than 1 year to process, and most are in the 18 months range at the least. They may get lucky and be on the short end of the processing guestimates, but I honestly agree with you and think they're deluding themselves thinking she'll be landed in time to get healthcare benefits for when the baby is born. Even if her LPR is processed in time, and she lands, most provinces have a waiting period after that before she'll be eligible for benefits. I guess it will depend which province she's in. In Ontario, it'll be another 3 months wait after landing til she would have OHIP.

CanadaU.S. Citizen in Canada on Tourist Visa- easiest way to get married?
The Canadian immigration is faster only if you apply "outland". Outland apps take about 6 months. If for some reason however you apply "inland" it'll take you about 18 months of rather frustrating and endless paperwork.

Yes, you can apply "outland" even if you are physically in Canada. See the Road To Canada site that Kriket posted for full details.

CanadaComing up on Citizenship
QUOTE (bradcanuck @ Apr 13 2009, 11:33 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I am nearing my earliest application date to apply for citizenship (November 11th)
What I wanted to know is - in your experience when is it best to get all of the paperwork together? Do they change the forms often enough to where I should wait - or would it be fine to begin prepping everything and putting together lease documents, photos etc now? We were told during the GC interview that we would have to send in "additional proof" once our 2 year GC was up.

I am getting excited here and I want to make sure everything is tight and put away for the big day.

Brad, I think the interviewer was talking about removing conditions to get your 10 year card, not citizenship. First you have to apply to remove conditions, then one year after that, you can apply for citizenship.
RebaFemale02009-04-14 06:23:00
CanadaIn your Montreal Interview, were you asked about visits to the US?
Just take evidence of your forced bed rest, like a letter from the OB, that should suffice.

I was asked about my previous visits to the US at my interview, I used to travel A LOT for work, and I had previously been denied entry, plus denied an L1B visa, so that was on my record, as well as all my visits. I did not have to go into detail, they just asked me why I went so often IIRC.

I have not been able to find ANYBODY that can do them anywhere near here. A lot of shops around here have even stopped doing US passport photos, and none of them locally have ever done Canadian.

The Atlanta consulate said maybe a Sears portrait studio can do it. I'm hesitant though...I've not read good things about box photography studios...and I used to work at an Olan Mills for a while tongue.gif

I found a forum today that had HORROR stories about trying to get Canadian passports renewed from the US. People submitting photos 3 or 4 times and still can't get them done so that passport Canada will accept them! There are chains of photo shops who now refuse to do Canadian photos because they're so damn picky!

I'm thinking I'm not gonna get home any time soon sad.gif

I think it gets sent to different offices depending where you live right?

They have a new form for renewals... it is a quick short form. Make sure you get it in before you expire... WAAAAAY easier... No guarantor req'd, nothing! One sheet, you fill out, sign... go in and process in 10 mins... you can get a rush on it for an extra $30. They say that you need proof of travel for it to be expidited (like a plane ticket etc...), not true.... you can either say that you are driving across boarder to visit a very sick relative, or that you are due at your immigration lawyers office within a week and you must have your new passport in hand (that's what I said...which was true) but all they make you do is write on a blank piece of paper your reason for expediting and that you are driving across the boarder....

You can have a new passport within 5 days smile.gif

I dropped mine off last Tuesday and just picked it up smile.gif plus if you drop off first thing in the morn, the office is quiet...

Here is the link to download the new form:

http://www.ppt.gc.ca/cdn/ren.aspx

Good luck smile.gif

In country renewals however are not available to those of us who are already legal permanent residents in the US. It has to be done by mail, with a completely different application form.

Well, that poses a question. What if you are in between your I-94 expiry date and the approval of your AOS and/or the approval of an EAD? Should you carry around your passport and NOA letter that you have a pending AOS case with you at all times? That seems a little extreme! If someone stooped me and all I had was a Ontario drivers license and I was in my fiance's car with Colorado State plates, would that be reason to detain me, since I cannot produce lawful immigration status? Or if I just had my passport with an expired I-94, they would assume I'm out of status and throw me in the big house? All unlikely scenarios, but that's scary to think about.

There has been more than one person here on VJ who has undergone deportation procedings because they did not have status and they were stopped at a checkpoint. They were K1s who had not yet applied for AOS, and deemed out of status so they were sent packing.

If your I-94 is expired and you have an NOA for AOS, I'd carry a photocopy of it with you until you get your EAD. EAD is proof of legal status.
RebaFemale02009-04-21 06:26:00
CanadaDomestic (USA) Travel with 2 Yr GC
If for some reason you are stopped and asked to produce your green card and you do not have it with you, you can be put in detention indefinitely, until such time as you can produce your documentation. Which of course is difficult to do if you are in detention. Even US born citizens have been detained since 9/11 when they could not produce identification to prove their citizenship. *Everyone* should carry ID these days. It's not a very friendly world out there anymore tongue.gif

If for some reason you are asked your citizenship status and you say you are American and you are in fact Not American, you can get yourself into a lot of trouble!

They mostly have ID checkpoints on Mexico border states, but more and more cities are granting their Police forces to check immigrant status now. Even up here, I belive 3 or 4 cities in North Carolina have authority to detain anyone who cannot produce immigrant status ID if asked at a traffic stop.

I'd rather have it and not need, than need it and not have it.

Remember in future though that if you fly anywhere internationally you will have to use your passport as ID, and the name on your ticket must match the name on your passport, so use your maiden name when you buy your ticket. Otherwise they can't let you on the plane.

Yes, you can still use the in lieu of guarantor. But US citizens can also be used as guarantors now I think, so if you've been in the US 2 years or more and know an accountant and have a regular doctor, they can sign for you. Although, the doctor may charge you for the privledge of their autograph tongue.gif

The tricky part is finding a photographer in the US who will do Canadian passport photos. Most refuse to do them anymore, though Sears Portrait Studios will still do them, mine cost $16 last week. Will mail it off today, and hopefully they won't be rejected.
