Well you can give them an overnight envelope (Xpresspost), that's what most of us did.

I'll tell you, my interview was on a Friday and I had my Passport and documents back by the next Thursday.

thanks peachy, i think i will do that too. What size of envelope do they require?

Does anyone know if you are allowed to pick up the visa a couple days later or if they have to be mailed? Anyone know how long it takes to come in the mail? I would get in my car and start driving to NC after the interview if I could.

You should advise your fiance to get a letter from his commander regarding his deployment to Afghanistan. A letter from his commander that states his projected deployment time will be fine. I hope you get your interview date soon, and if you don't mind me asking, where is your husband stationed currently?

Thanks for the advice. He's stationed at MCAS cherry point in North Carolina. Hopefully that will make the AOS a bit smoother cause I think the timing will be a bit close.

Expedite...and I hope he is safe if he ends up going :(

I looked into expediting but because he doesn't have orders yet I'm not sure if they can expedite. It's still not 100% that he will be going but it is like 85%. there was a possibility he would be going in April and I would have been calling and emailing every day if that were the case! Hopefully I'll have an interview date when I call tomorrow. :)

Congrats to everyone that got a date today. By the time I got home from work it was too late to call! I will definitely be calling first thing in the morning! I was checking the forum quite a few times today. Seeing every one get their interview dates is giving me so much hope that i will be scheduled too. I was getting pretty worried. My fiance found out that he will probably be deployed to Afghanistan in August. I am glad I might be able to spend a few months with him. Hopefully we will be able to complete the AOS on time or at least not have anything for him to do as he might not be in the country!

Just called DOS and no interview yet. The person I spoke with said that there were a large number of cases whose documents were logged at the end of november like mine. And a lot of us here I guess too. I noticed that the vermont processing center sped up recently maybe that's causing another backlog! If Montreal was having a hard time with the number of cases they were already getting and then all of a sudden being sent double.... Well i'm still going to hope we all get one soon but I'm thinking it's less likely now that I've spoken with DOS.

Laura, is your fiancee on active duty? You can get an expedited interview if he is.

He is active duty but doesn't have orders to be deployed any time soon. Although we all know that can change at any moment... I was told the same thing as Colleens, that he would have to have deployment orders for any type of expedition but I am curious to know if they expedite interviews for active duty.

I think our processing at vermont was possibly hurried through. It was faster than most other timelines i've seen. I was was actually going to ask about this just the other day since more troops have been ordered to afghanistan since there was talk his unit might be one sent over. It would be good to know of a way to expedite if he did get orders.

Hi Laura,

Welcome to VJ!

The Montreal wait seems to be a long one. I don't think you'll get your interview over the holidays, and it seems they have finished scheduling until the end of January.

The wait is the hardest part! I don't suggest calling DOS every day, it's just so disappointing every time they say you don't have a date! Once/week is good.

I was hoping for the interview to be when he's here but I didn't really think it would happen. Finished scheduling until the end of January? Do you mean they close for the holidays until then? How did you come to that time frame? Sorry about the flurry of questions but it sounds like you know what your talking about.

I really wish the whole scheduling process was more transparent. Is it just montreal or do most consulates have these random delays. we have been really lucky so far in how quickly our visa has been processed but I guess it had to catch up with us sometime.

This website has really been so helpful and has really helped me with everything from filling out forms to comparing our timeline. I would ahve been so lost without it. Thanks to everyone for posting.

CanadaK-1 people waiting for interviews at Montreal
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that montreal doesn't slow the trend of giving interviews. Seems like they were trying to catch up, I know we're all hoping it doesn't go back to the 3 month + wait times! I brought my packet 3 to the post office on nov 8 ( I know it's a sunday but i couldn't go the next day) and holy cow did Canada post ever give me a heart attack. It was supposed to be a 2 day delivery and then of course nov 11th was a holiday but i kept tracking my packet and it still wasn't there by FRIDAY! kept calling canada post and finally friday evening when I checked online for the 100th time they had updated it to say it had been delivered the previous day! Oh well I'm just glad it got there.

Who else calls DOS every possible chance, I actually had to limit myslef to calling once a week. Today when I called there was still no interview although she did confirm that all the paperwork was accepted and I'm just waiting for a date. I am also waiting to schedule my medical until after the 14th. I was really hoping i would get an interview soon because my fiance is visint for 3 weeks over the holiday. Having him at the interview would mean not having to bring too much proof of the relationship. Although knowing him he'd try and be funny and say he'd never met me before and i'd offered him money to stand there and look pretty or something like that...

Anyway here's hoping we all get interviews soon! I'll post as soon as i get the news.

Laura

I'm hoping that my parents might come down to the Air Show in Jacksonville, NC because the Snowbirds will be showcased. I will hopefully be going back to Canada in the summer... maybe August. My husband will be deploying in late July and I think I'd like to visit friends and family during that time. Plus, It's freaking hot down here in the summer.

We are lucky tho FI travels a lot for work so we will probably accompany him to most trips to To, Ott, Montreal so we can sneak in visits with everybody..And i can stock up on stuff i cant get in the US..

maybe just in putting it back together!

I'd hazard a guess though that if you try to take computer bits in your carry on, you'll be searched under suspicion that its bits of a bomb. And if you put it in checked baggage, you run the risk of it being broken into smaller bits.

As for the courier company, Yes, they will still require some form of documentation that the items you are sending are permitted to be sent without duty or taxes being charged. The only documentation accepted by USCBP for that would be a copy of your visa and I-94 as proof of your legal entry to the US. Whether you're using a moving company like Allied Vans, or UPS or Canada Post/USPS, you'll need documentation for customs.

I could be wrong here, but I don't think I would write out my CC number on there. Anyone could steal it that way no?

VISA as in immigration, not credit card.

When I moved down here I had to ship it with a moving company. AFTER I entered the US with my K3 visa, I faxed a copy of my I-94 and visa to the moving company and they put it all with the customs forms they already had from whn they packed up the truck.

If you want to be SURE that you will not lose any of your belongings by confiscation, or have to pay duties, then wait to ship it AFTER you move. Have a family member hold onto it all, then fax them a copy of your I-94 and visa and they can attach that with the customs forms.

here's the CBP website page with results from a quick search for personal household goods

That's the key though, is that you have to include a copy of your visa and I-94 with the shipping documents, otherwise you will be charged taxes and duty.

Once you have your visa and have crossed into the US, you can ship your personal belongings with no duty or taxes for up to 10 years after your date of entry.

I got my pictures done in Canada over Christmas and my mother is coming down for Easter so I will have her send in or drop off my application with the originial birth certificate. I sure wish she was still living in Kitchener, because your right it was a quick in and out last time I got my passport.

Maybe I will wait to renew if there is going to be a 10 year option soon.

Coconuts: I feel similarly! These forums are a great resource and have made the process much less scary. I'm so glad I found them. What would we do without the internet?

Kathryn41: That's true. I'd rather go through an embassy with a longer wait that approves visa more often :D

I'm calling my GP today to schedule an appointment. Looking at what vaccinnes are required, I actually don't need anything for a couple more years but I figure I might as well get my booster now. (I'm aware that for AOS you need more vaccinnes than what's indicated on the panel physicians website.)

Here's some more questions. I'm referring to this link: http://montreal.usco...ument=visa_pkt3 for packet 3.

1. Should photocopies be in colour? I know it's a silly question, but when I applied for my passport a few years ago I had to provide colour photocopies of ID, which makes sense since a black-and-white photocopy would obscure your appearance. So, for things with photographs (such as the biographic information page in a passport), do the photocopies have to be in colour (as requested per the checklist in packet 3?) What about "official" documents like your birth certificate and NOA2? I'm hoping they only have to be in black and white since colour ink for my printer/copier is expensive haha :D

2. Also, this isn't indicated anywhere in packet 3, but should I bring my SIN card to the interview? Seems like I should. (Perhaps it's indicated in packet 4? I should be doing more thorough research >>)

3. When the checklist in Packet 3 indicates "evidence of domicile," what do they mean? I mean, I know they want evidence that I'll have somewhere to live, but what's considered proper evidence for this? Do K1 applicants do this part, or only other visa applicants?

4. The checklist in packet 3 also indicates I-864. Correct me if I'm wrong, but K1 visa applicants only do the affidavit of support I-134, right? Or do we do both?

5. For the I-134, will they want originals of my fiance's tax returns or are photocopies sufficient? (Trying to figure out what stuff I need from him since he's visiting me at the end of the month. I already know he needs letters from his employer and the bank.)

6. For good measure, should I provide any passport-style photos of my fiance? I already have some photos of use together, so...

You guys have NO IDEA how much I appreciate your help. Thank you so much for all the valuable knowledge and information!

CanadaWhere are K1 interviews held?
Thanks for all the info guys :) I think I will get the birth certificate translated just in case and also to use in the USA, as I had never thought of that. It sucks that I have to pay extra money for something that probably won't be necessary (to obtain my visa, at least- I understand it would be useful for AOS) but I'm not taking any chances with something as important as this.

Regarding medical history, I've never had any surgery (besides my wisdom teeth if that counts? lol), never had a drug/alcohol problem, never had a mental health problem or serious, chronic medical illness, and the only medication I've taken for any length of time was birth control pills, although I am no longer taking them. According to the panelphysicians website I only need to bring documentation for anything that was "abnormal" (along with the vaccination record, ID, photos, and consulate letter.) I wonder if it'll look strange if I don't bring any medical history, though?

Ahh! I'm so nervous because there's so many things I still have to do! Questions that I never had thought of until now keep popping into my head. It's quite nerve-wracking to think I might travel all the way to Montreal and spend all this money only to be denied because I forgot something or didn't fill something out right.

Yet another question:
Is a copy of the I-129F necessary after your petition has been approved? I asked my fiance to photocopy the entire petition before mailing it but he didn't. I don't know why -_- I have the originals of the evidence for the I-129F, but not the forms. Should we go through all the forms and fill them out again just to be handy? It's not listed as an interview requirement but I thought we should have a copy...

Is this the appropriate place to be posting so many questions? I guess I should be posting them in the K1 forum, hmm! I just stumbled upon these forums and there's soooo much useful information here. I will definitely need to dig around some more with the search function. I could probably spend all day reading these forums and taking notes!

I have yet another silly question. My birth certificate is in French (I was born in Montreal) but I don't need to get it translated right? I *believe* I read somewhere that documents only need to be in the official languages of the country the interview it takes place in, but I can't remember exactly, and since I'm applying for an American visa I thought they might require an English translation. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks for answering my question guys :D Jeannie: Ugh... You sent the petition July last year and only had your interview this week? :\ Well, if mine goes at the same rate as yours then I have about 5 months to go. That's not too bad, I just hope it goes smoothly.

If you don't mind answering another question... I know that, among other things, you're supposed to bring your "medical history" to the examination. I have not yet received any further instructions as my case only just left the NVC last week, but I thought I'd call my physician and ask about the process and associated fees for obtaining my medical history just to be prepared. She said that she needs more detail regarding what I specifically need before she can help me. I already have my vaccination record, but I was wondering if you know what other "specific" documents one generally needs to bring to the medical examination? (I'm guessing this may vary depending on which panel physician does it). Or, is it at least explained in detail in the instructions I will be receiving in the future, or is a pdf available online?

Sorry for asking so many question!

Thanks again!

CanadaWhere are K1 interviews held?
Hello,
I am a Canadian citizen residing in the Greater Toronto Area. I have an american fiance who has petitioned for me under the I-129F (fiancee visa). My petition was sent out in late November, then sent to the NVC this month. NVC processed it quickly and sent my fiance a letter saying that my petition will soon be forwarded to the nearest consulate post, which was indicated as Montreal.

I thought it would've gone to Toronto? :( Are Montreal and Vancouver the only places that do K1 visas even though they're technically non-immigrant visas? Did they send it to the wrong city? Is that where my interview will be? I was so excited that things were going quickly and now I'm worried as I've read all these stories about people waiting forever when their case is assigned to Montreal. Ugh. I wasn't expecting it to be fast, though, so I guess I shouldn't be disappointed.

Sorry for such an obvious question, but I can't find any clear answers from the consulate websites alone.

Thanks in advance for your help.

CanadaBunch of questions on Packet 3 for K1
This forum must have a limit on how many times you can edit your posts because I can't edit my last post anymore... Anyways... I have a sneaking suspicion that I wasn't supposed to affix my photos to the two copies of the DS-156... which I did this morning, with glue stick. :( Is that what the consular officer is supposed to do?

I must seem like a spazz with all these questions, lol. If I wasn't supposed to it's too late because I already mailed it >_<
pocherosFemaleCanada2011-05-11 19:02:00
CanadaBunch of questions on Packet 3 for K1
Thanks for the well wishes guys! I filled out all the forms yesterday and quadruple checked them. Then this morning I went to get passport photos done (to affix to the DS-156) and colour photocopy my passport. I got 5 photos for $20 at Zellers, but accidentally dog earned one and smudged it with my pen, so I guess I'll have to get some more. They want two more at the interview anyways, right? lol. I assembled it all together and mailed it at Staples visa Xpresspost :) I'm kind of unsure about the folder I mailed my stuff in (it was a big gangly clear plastic folder from the dollar store, with a zipper) because I didn't realize how big it was and I had to shove it into the envelope. It just barely fit. However, I made sure to paperclip the forms (they can throw away the paperclip if they don't like it...) and put two labels, one with my name, case number, and "Packet 3 for K1 visa" on it, and another with the address and "Immigrant Visa Unit" on the clear plastic folder. I included a cover letter as well, which has my name and case number on it, among other information.

That was probably too much detail! Lol. Anyways to everyone who posted in this thread, thank you thank you thank you! I would've been so lost without all your speedy help.

So, how long does it take for them to log packet 3 and send out packet 4 usually? Should I start calling the DoS on Monday? Hehe :) Ahhh so much to do! I bought myself an accordion folder from Wal Mart for my interview/packet 4 stuff but I'm starting to think it's a bit too small. There were big cardboard ones with handles and then small plastic ones. I got a plastic one because I thought the embassy might consider the one with the handle too suspicious or something haha.

So basically all I have left to gather is my police certificate, which I'll take care of tomorrow, and my birth certificate translation (besides evidence and the I-134 etc., which I have in a binder/can easily access/doesn't cost money or require a trip somewhere). I hope I can find a place that doesn't take long to translate my certificate! For those who didn't see my last thread, the consensus was that while Montreal generally doesn't require a translation for a French birth certificate, they *might* ask for one, and even if they don't it's a good idea to have one as you will probably need a translated one once you're in the States.

Alright, I will be mailing it via xpresspost :) Thanks again!

I have yet another question. On form DS-230, question #35 (http://montreal.usco.../visa_DS230.pdf) it asks to "list dates of all previous visits to or residence in the United States. [...] Give type of visa status, if known." Then there's a box for Type of Visa and "A" Number.

I have visited the US a couple times on vacation to see my fiance. Do they want this type of information for this question or is it just if you had a visa to enter the states? I'm so confused :S Should I just enter the dates I saw him and the location and leave the visa and "A" boxes blank?

Alright, clear plastic folder and coverpage it is! :)

Yet another question... I noticed that in Ralyse's Pkt3 thread someone said they mailed their packet 3 with ExpressPost. Do they really care how you mail it? The DHL branch closest to me is a bit of a ways (as I take public transit). Could I like, use Canada Post and chose the fastest option for mailing it there? I don't care if it costs me $50. lol. Or is there an advantage to mailing it through DHL (besides it being free?)

Anyways, I registered for DHL on the website as Packet 3 instructed me to. That means that I'll be receiving my passport and visa at the branch I selected and I'll be getting my waybill number later, not now, right? :)

I have yet another question regarding the wording of packet 3. For police certificates, it says "Police certificates are required from (1) the police authority of your present locality issued within one year of the date of your visa interview, (2) the police authority of each locality, other than those in the US, where you resided for one year or more since attaining the age of 16 which certificate covers the entire period of residence in the locality"

I have lived in my current town for 2 years, and in a different town before then (between 16 and 20, approximately), so do I have to get a certificate from my old town? The wording is a bit confusing.

Thanks again for the help guys! And if anyone has any answers for questions 7 or 8 it would be much appreciated, as I am going to be filling out those forms ASAP and I am unsure of what to write for some of the questions.

Ohh, I see! That makes more sense. Hmm, I thought I'd be calling the embassy for updates since they're the ones handling the paperwork, but it's actually the Department of State I call? So what you're saying is I can call DoS, and when they confirm that they've mailed Packet 3 to me I can start mailing packet 3 forms back to them (since the stuff for it is available online). Then before you even received packet 3, they already mailed packet 4 to you and thus you became authorized to book an interview. When you mailed your packet 3 stuff, did you attach your birth certificate, evidence of engagement, evidence of financial support, and police check to DS-156K? That is, will I have to mail all those documents along with the forms for packet 3? Or do you bring that stuff to the interview?
