CanadaStill waiting for K1 Visa
There's a thread and a poll about it here: http://www.visajourn...-from-montreal/ Four days isn't that long to wait for a visa. Some people get them quickly, but a lot of people wait quite awhile (weeks). I imagine the further you live away from the consulate, the longer it takes to receive them.

CanadaPacket 4 - Montreal

We just sent packet 3 back to MTL last tuesday. My fiancee called DOS today and they said they received packet 3 and have sent packet 4.

Does this mean we can schedule the interview NOW instead of waiting until packet 4 arrives? MTL had my fiancee's address wrong and we emailed them about it, but I'm worried they sent packet 4 to the incorrect address as well. (Packet 3 never arrived, so we used the list on the MTL consulate website).

Since I'm doubtful that we will actually get packet 4, is it identical to this page: http://montreal.usco...ument=visa_pkt4 ?

This was the most relevant thread I cound find - sorry for bumping it up after so long.

Thanks so much!

Yes you can book it. That page has the same info as packet 4. Don't wait to get it in the mail; it'll set you back :)

CanadaWhat is required to send in for pkt 3

The good thing is that Montreal has a photobooth for passport pictures right in the waiting area before going up to the main floor where you do your interview. So if it's not something you have at the time, no worries.

Ah, great tip. Thank you! I didn't want to waste any more money on photos.

Wow I thought they only wanted two as well. I even sent two with my packet 3 and I have two photos currently but I think I'll get some extra ones just in case.

I sent in photos and the biographic information page photocopy with my Packet 3. Others didn't do this and still got approved though, and the consulate website certainly is confusing with those two contradictory pages! Better to err on the side of caution I say.

And I totally understand the part "about a crappy commute" and how it wears you out. I lived in Toronto for 6 months and got the heck out of there first chance I got lol I liked it ok as a city, but the price of rent, and the crazy commute, good Lord, that was killing me and my joy for life :bonk:

You're gonna have to do like me and learn how to drive when you get down to the US  . Are you nervous about that? I was but then I took the classes and I now LOVE to drive. Your life will change in so many ways when you leave the GTA. For the better, I think ...lol I felt like you had to be really rich to have a decent life in Toronto. It was, like, unrealistic to be able to live in Toronto , not some far awar suburbs, and have your own place, which I think I deserved about graduating from university...

And may I mention: Buh-bye winter!

I totally feel ya! I love Toronto as an interesting, multicultural place, but it's so freakin' expensive, and if you're unfortunate enough to have to commute there every day, well, good luck  I live in Brampton, actually, so not really "in" Toronto but Brampton has its own problems. Rent seems like its out of control everywhere, from Toronto to Brampton to Newmarket to Barrie (the various places I've lived). I wonder if its cheap anywhere in Ontario.

I actually am kind of nervous about driving. I put off getting my license since I can't afford a car anyways, but my fiance wants to give me his current car and then buy a new one pretty soon after I move over there. Maybe I will take some classes like you did and that'll help. I love the concept of driving, i.e. not having to carry 50lbs of groceries home in a backpack, but I'm still a little nervous about it because suddenly making a mistake might mean causing an accident and potentially hurting someone. But that's a silly fear that will go away with practice.

And, good lord no more snow!!! I'm moving to Las Vegas  I'll take extreme heat over cold weather any day! Not to mention everything is cheaper there (as long as you avoid The Strip) and their sales tax is lower (not sure what it is exactly, but lower than the 13% HST in Ontario). I'm always amazed at the apartments you can get for $1,000 a month over there, gorgeous 3 level lofts, whereas they charge $1,400 a month here for a dump.

So, in addition to meeting my wonderful fiance I'm also fortunate enough to be moving to what is, IMO, one of the nicer parts of the States. I'm just going to keep counting my blessings

:ot2: Sorry I hickjacked your thread with my own Toronto rant haha

Not at all! It was very nice reading about your experience :) VJ is such a great website because everyone can relate to the somewhat uncommon experience of immigration.

I see you've come to the conclusion that it's not a big deal so I'll just say...... have fun in Montreal!

Oh and I found out that his name is in fact spelled correctly on his passport. It's just misspelled in the actual forms for the 129F, which is hardly a big deal, I imagine. What a relief!

I am going to have myself a good drink once this whole thing is over. In a way, going through all the difficulties of a long distance relationship has prepared me and my fiance for marriage, I think. If we can make it through this we can make it through anything.

hey, I'm sorry you're feeling strung out. Don't be, it will be fine. We're lucky we're Canadians and I feel like we get an easier treatment than other countries, so we have to count our blessings :innocent:

My husband didnt understand the process much, either, and wasn't too worried about it. I got fed up and told him he better get himself a warm winter coat bc we're moving to Canada. Strangely, he came around and is fully involved in the process now lol  Thank God for that. His support has made it much easier for me.

You're not the only one with a spouse who's lackadaisical about the process, if that makes you feel better :) It's not that he's not interested in you being there, it's more than they dont realize the ramifications. I, for one, am guilty of the same. When I lived in Canada, in MY country, where I was a natural born citizen (well, still am lol) I had no interest in understanding the immigration process for my foreign student friends. I just assumed it was all easy and were gonna be handed out a Canadian permanent resident card simply on the basis of wanting one, easy peasy

Hi :) Thanks for the reassurance and sharing your experience with me. I feel a lot better knowing I'm not alone!

My fiance definitely cares and wants to be with me more than anything else, but hates work with a passion! I've been bugging him to get me the affidavit of support since May, and he only started putting it together a few days ago. Lo and behold, I just found out he "forgot" to files his taxes for 2010 (how do you forget to file your taxes???) and my interview is only 3 weeks away! He filed them today, thankfully, but he has to wait 7-10 business days for his transcripts :( I'll have it in time but it's still cutting it too close for my comfort. I hope the IRS is fast- I suspect it is because they actually like it when people give them paperwork, i.e. file their taxes. If it was any other gov't agency I'd be really worried about them taking their sweet time...

I try to get him involved in the process but he still hasn't come around. He still puts off everything until the last minute, and when I ask him why he says it doesn't make a difference as long as it's done on time, right? I guess not, but that's assuming we catch any snares as soon as they come up, instead of months down the road when we get an RFE or something.

He's truly oblivious, because when I said I still want about 3-4 weeks to wrap up my business after the interview (assuming I get my visa within that time frame), he thought I was nuts, saying why would I possibly wait that long? When I still have to wrap up my employment (I'm not quitting until my visa's been approved), pack up my stuff, donate my furniture, say goodbye to friends, figure out what to do with my Canadian money (open a US bank account?), and a bunch of other things I can't remember at the moment. I don't even own a car or have a driver's license, so getting rid of the stuff I don't need is a pain in the ####, because it's not like I can just throw my furniture in a van and drive to Goodwill. Among that I work full time with a crappy commute, so my energy is wearing thin.

*sigh* Okay that was an awful lot of whining. I know my situation isn't unique or even that bad- believe me, I'm grateful that it's so easy for a Canadian to immigrate to the states to marry an American. Moreover, I'm blessed to have met and fell in love with my fiance in the first place, even if he is frustrating at times  But the last few days have been very trying for me.

Anyways, thanks again for sharing your story :) And thanks to all of VJ for providing me with some sanity in the midst of this process...

CanadaMisspelled USC name in 129F, possibly passport
Hi everyone. I'm a K1er and I was just putting together some paperwork for my upcoming interview in Montreal. I have a bit of a unique situation...

My fiance's (the American) middle name is Mathew, with ONE T. This is his name listed on his birth certificate. His mom is dyslexic so she gave him a unique name. :P

Now, my fiance never liked that his middle name wasn't MaTThew. On his driver's license it's listed as MaTThew. On his passport, I'm not sure- he has to check for me, but it's possible it's also listed as MaTThew, but it might also be MaThew. I've always kinda given him ####### for not spelling it with one T, the way it is legally.

Why is this a problem? Well, I was just going through our copy of the forms for the 129F and throughout the document his middle name is spelled MaTThew. But, on my Packet 3 documents (which I also kept a copy of and filled out myself), his name is spelled MaThew. Now I'm a little concerned.

1. At the embassy will they have a copy of the 129F? Is that where it eventually ends up, and they use this to cross check information with Packet 3 and your answers at the interview?
2. Will this cause problems? As I said, I don't yet know if it's spelled Matthew or Mathew on his passport, but I know it's definitely spelled Mathew on his birth certificate. I also have to double check this but I think he submitted a copy of his passport (not his birth certificate) for the 129F.

Am I freaking out over nothing? I can't lie at the interview if they ask me if it's just a typo, because LEGALLY he is XXXX Mathew XXXX, what if XXXX Matthew XXXX is a convicted criminal or something?

I am going to keep calling him until he answers and tell him to send me his birth certificate if his passport lists the incorrectly spelled name. Is there anything else I should do?

My fiance has been so uncooperative throughout this whole process. He doesn't realize that people are ####### about this stuff and when I give him grief for it he tells me I'm overreacting. -____-;;;

CanadaWhen to get information for interview together
Certain things- the police check, the photos, the medical exam, the letter of intent, etc.- have to be within a certain timeframe of your interview, so for those you should wait.

If you're unsure if your immunizations are up to date, I'd suggest you look at the website for the physician you'll be going to for the exam (Seiden's in Toronto, Medisy's in Montreal, and I don't know who does Vancouver) and find what vaccines you may need. You family doctor may give them to you for free (for example, my doctor gave me an MMR one month before my medical exam) which will save you money because if you need vaccines at the medical I *think* they charge you for it.

If your birth certificate or any other important documents are in a foreign language you may need them translated (it's up to the individual consulate whether or not they need translations- Montreal asks for them in Packet 4, for example). I'm glad I had my translation done a few months ago because it was a bit of a wait.

Presumably you've been doing this from day one, but you can collect evidence of your ongoing relationship any time. Plane tickets, receipts that show you or your fiance was in the other's country, photos of you together, etc. It's not always requested at the interview, from what I've read, but it's certainly handy just in case.

The non-american gets interviewed by the American consulate in either Vancouver or Montreal. You may bring along your fiance for moral support and if you do they may ask him some questions as well, but it is not necessary for him to be present.

CanadaPacket 4 Arrived today but.....

Hey Guys just a quick question....Darrell received the packet 4 letter today :o) ... I still haven't received my yet though...:o( .. Darrell also received another letter dated 07/07/2011 that states I need to send a photo copy of my passport biographical page .. I guess I forgot to include it ... grrr :o( ... The only thing is that they said I could send it at no extra charge but I have to go to DHL and of course the closest DHL is 2 hours away... Do you think I can just send it to the same address that I sent packet 3 to (D'Youville Montreal)??? Also in the packet 4 letter it says that I will need to bring in my "appointment letter, with the date and time" to the interview... Does that mean that I will be getting a letter with the date and time of my scheduled interview ?? This is the first I've heard of this I thought it was just packet 4 that was needed... Thanks Guys/Gals!

You don't get a letter with your interview date. You have to go to this website http://usvisa-info.c...country_welcome and register and book an appointment online. Congrats on getting your Packet 4!

I know that when you initially mail Packet 3 you don't have to use DHL but for an RFE I'm not sure. Odd that they approved your packet 4 when they wanted something else from packet 3. You probably don't have to use DHL although I'm not sure if they want you to.

Edit: The email you get when you book your interview is the "appointment letter." http://www.visajourn...terview-letter/ Although I'd bring packet 4 too just to be safe!

I don't know whether or not you should bring more photos (I would err on the side of caution and pick up two since they're pretty cheap) but even if Montreal wants more, don't worry 'cause there's a photobooth inside the consulate. :) Don't have any answers for the rest of your post, sorry.

Also they wouldn't outright deny your visa, they would just postpone its issuance until you got them the required documents. It's rare to get outright denied if you're just missing something that's easily obtained.

CanadaInterview Conflict

I'm not sure how long it will take to get results. I have to get the results of my ultrasound before I can get a referral for a biopsy. The ultrasound probably won't tell us anything but it needs to be done before I can get the referral to a specialist. My doctor is really great and I know she will try to get me some results as soon as possible. But it still might take a month or so. I'm so anxious and keep having panic attacks since this has been worrying me for over a month now. In addition I'm defending my MSc thesis in just over a month and my fiance deploys shortly.
Thank you all so much for your support and advice!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a stressful time :( Getting a visa itself is stressful enough, and having other things piled on top of it only makes it worse! However, if it's any consolation, consular officers are people and realize things like this happen. They will probably not issue you a visa until you provide proof that the lumps aren't anything to worry about. It just means that when you finally do get your visa issued it will add on a few more weeks of processing time to it.
pocherosFemaleCanada2011-07-13 21:44:00
CanadaInterview Conflict
Unfortunately I have no idea if you can request to have your visa issuance to be postponed. I don't know how a consular officer would respond if you were to tell him that you needed to check some lumps on your neck. Perhaps they would proceed as mentioned earlier (not issue a visa until you give them the necessary documentation showing you are in good health.) However, I *think* you have 6 months to enter the states once your visa has been issued (for a fiance/K1) as well.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in. Probably the best thing for you to do is to NOT change your interview date, but continue to investigate the lumps on your neck and if the results are inconclusive by the time you have your interview and you do not wish to have your visa issued right away, then be prepared to bring it up at the interview? Not sure exactly how one should go about that. I wish I could be of more help but take my advice with a grain of salt as I don't know what the best course of action is here. :/

Thank you for your response. So I don't need to give a certain amount of notice? Do I just go back into the pool of people waiting for an interview?

Also, is there a time limit for my package 4 and my medical results or is there no expiration?

You scheduled your interview online right? You simply log in to the CSC website, go to "My account," and click reschedule appointment. The deadline for rescheduling an appointment is one day before your interview, so you have until August 9th to reschedule. However, the next available date is currently October 25th. The next available date changes frequently but I'm pretty sure most of September has been filled up by now.

As shirley noted, as long as you have an interview date your case remains active. Technically, NOA2 gives you an expiration date but most people don't receive their visas before the expiration date and it's automatically extended when you set an interview date. If you cancel your interview and don't reschedule and it goes past the date on your NOA2 then you have to somehow stay in touch with Montreal (or DoS?) to let them know you haven't abandoned your case. I am unfamiliar with the procedure regarding this situation, however (that is I don't know if you should contact DoS or MTL.)

4. Should I contact the doctor I saw in Toronto to get advice? I thought he had told me that you can have an interview even if you're medical isn't completed. You just have to resolve the issue and send the medical stuff before they issue the visa. Maybe they can do something like that in this situation.

Yes, you can have your interview and have the visa issuance postponed until your medical issue is resolved. Sometimes people don't have everything at the interview (because they had their medical only the day before the interview, etc.) in which case Montreal will wait for you to get them the necessary documentation.

I'm not sure what the best procedure is for you regarding everything else, but as to #5 - the medical exam is valid for one year.

Okay, so it turns out my fiance "forgot" to file his 2010 taxes. -____-;; So the other day he went to the IRS office and filed them, but they said it might take up to a couple weeks to get a transcript/return for 2010. He can get transcripts for 2009 and 2008 easily since he filed for those on time.

My question is, if I can't get a transcript by my interview (it's on August 11th), can I use the thingy he filled out to do his taxes? (I know, I'm bad at describing things...) Like, the forms where you put in all the info from your W2s and calculate how much you owe?

Hey everyone :) I just had a quick question. As my interview date is fast approaching, my fiance is getting the I-134 ready for me. He already has letters from his employer & the bank, in addition to some pay stubs. Will this, along with his 3 most recent W2s, be enough? I've seen mentions of tax returns and tax transcripts before. Are W2s good enough to stand in for those (since they're also tax related?) If not, does Montreal want originals of the tax returns or are photocopies good enough?

Thanks!

Visas are not generally officially approved at the interview. They are recommended for approval. They have to go through another screening after the interview to make sure the papers are correct and complete and they fit the bill to actually be given a visa.

CanadaDoes the "Welcome to the U.S." paper really mean you passed?

Sorry, it was a CR-1. I didn't fill in my timeline, because the process has been very complicated, long and drawn-out. We originally filed in 2008 and had to re-file last year, due to a horrible lawyer, and also my mother-in-law having changed my husband's last name without his knowledge. It caused a lot of old wounds of his from his childhood to be reopened. Apparently, when he was a child, she had him illegally adopted by his step-father without his father's consent, and also somehow had his birth certificate changed to say his step-father was his father. He went to live with his father when he was 16, and luckily his father had his original birth certificate, so that's what he's been using since he was 16. So he has always gone by his father's last name his whole adult life, because he didn't know he was "legally" adopted and his name was changed. So when we applied for his visa originally, we used his father's last name (what he's been using for taxes, passport, etc.). When he applied for a copy of his birth certificate, he received a letter saying "no person with the given name and Social Insurance Number or biological father listed can be found." So he had to ask his mom and it was a big blow-out and pretty horrible. Anyway, we had to get a lawyer to represent us, to say that he didn't try to deceive the U.S. government by using an alias, that he didn't know his name had been changed, etc., etc., and we had to re-apply for the visa and put his step-father's last name in the section that asks whether he'd gone by any other names. Then the lawyer didn't send in some of the documents and we had to fire him and blah blah blah...

So, that's our story. :) It's been a very long process, so we are so anxious at this point for it to be over!

Oh, wow, that's awful! :( I'm sorry to hear you had to go through all that BS! Congrats on finally getting your visa. Anyways, worst case scenario you might have to buy another plane ticket. A lot of people get their visas quickly, too; it seems a bit like roulette. Of course, if you're far away from the consulate it might take you a little longer than others.

Also note that DoS has a tendency to say your visa is in all sorts of different stages at this point when it's really just waiting to be printed out. So if someone at DoS says your visa is in administrative processing it's generally nothing to worry about.

Montreal is notoriously slow for sending out visas. Some people wait up to 4 weeks to actually get their passport back in the mail. I'm pretty sure if they gave him the Welcome to the US Paper and they didn't explicitly tell him to send in his tax return it means he was approved. :) If you can help it I strongly recommend not setting a POE date/buying plane tickets until he gets his passport back since its unpredictable how soon he'll get it.

It's probably a good idea to go through busier POEs because they'll be more familiar with how to process a visa. I suppose you're allowed to go through any kind of border but the smaller ones might not know what to do with certain visas.

There's a thread an a poll about it here: http://www.visajourn...g-for-montreal/

Montreal is notoriously slow and unpredictable, although some people do get their visas back very quickly. It's good you have a back-up plan- sometimes people buy their plane tickets right after the interview and then they can't use them because they didn't get their visa back on time! :P

CanadaHow long between NOA2 and Interview?
The CSC website has been showing October dates for the last couple of weeks. I got my NOA2 in April and my interview is in August.

CanadaSo if we were to ship a couple of boxes from Canada after I POE...
I'm curious about this procedure as well, since I don't have that much stuff and it needs to be mailed.
