Oh, if you happen to have a fish scale that's a very accurate way to weight your luggage (just hook it around the handle). I used a fish scale to weigh my luggage last time I entered that States and it had the same reading as the scale at the airport. I picked it up from Canadian Tire for 5 bucks I think.

I also forgot to mention: if you're entering the States via plane make sure to check out how much checked luggage you're allowed to bring and the cost. For example Delta charges you for your first checked bag, but Air Canada gives you one checked bag for free and charges $35 for the second checked bag. This is handy for me since I'll be living out of a suitcase for awhile and I chose to fly with Air Canada.

CanadaMailing belongings with UPS
Hi guys :) I just thought I'd make a post regarding shipping your personal belongings since I found out some helpful information.

I don't own a lot of stuff and have a few medium sized boxes of personal belongings (kitchenware, clothing, art supplies, boring stuff like that) that I'm going to ship after I make my POE. Some other people here have mentioned U-haul or filling up pods, but neither of those options are practical for someone like me who has so few belongings. So I checked out UPS: http://www.ups.com/c...a/engindex.html It has a nice a calculator that estimates the cost of shipping your belongings (have a tape measure and scale to weigh your stuff handy) and IMO it's fairly reasonable if you go with the cheapest option. It would be more expensive to replace my belongings than mail them so I don't mind ponying up a couple hundred bucks for some boxes of stuff.

I went to the UPS store to ask what forms I need. The guy was very helpful and told me directly that "You know your belongings can't precede you when you enter the States, right?" to which I said yes. I thought I'd mention that since it's a question that comes up around here. Seems needlessly bureaucratic but if you're shipping stuff it seems like it's dodgy to do so before you make your POE. Fortunately I have some helpful friends here who are willing to mail my stuff for me :)

The guy gave me some forms and also informed me that they will need a black and white photocopy of my visa to accompany them (colour photocopies of visas are illegal, apparently, which makes sense.)

This is the form he gave me: http://forms.cbp.gov...p_form_3299.pdf It's the same form no matter which company you use to mail your stuff, I'm pretty sure.

It asks for some more obscure information like the name of your arriving train/flight. I mean, that's not *really* obscure but it's something to keep track of if you're not mailing your belongings immediately. So what I'm doing is filling out a few of these forms ahead of time and then leaving them here with the person who's going to ship my stuff so it's all ready to go.

I hope this is helpful!

CanadaMedisys Medical Vision Test

I noticed most people say they test your vision. Has anyone with bad vision ever had problems being accepted due to this? Do they do this test with or without your glasses?

Also, what sort of a note if any do I need from a doctor. We've already asked about this several times and the doctors don't seem to have any clue what we're asking for. Is there a document with some sort of guidelines I can print out and give to the doctor so they know what they are supposed to do. Half way into explaining what we're talking about the doctor is usually looking at his watch looking for a quick exit plan to see his next patient. Its hard enough to get an appointment with a doctor at all in Montreal, even harder to get one with a doctor who isn't rushed and wants to take the time to make sure you get what you need for your immigration.

Why do I always find something to worry about? :(

Regarding vision, I don't really know as I had my medical done at Dr. Seiden's where they don't test that. However, I highly doubt that you won't "pass" your medical exam simply for having bad eyesight. I have bad eyesight and wore glasses to my exam in Toronto and they didn't say anything. They care about serious communicable diseases like tuberculosis and HIV, not typical problems that aren't infectious like bad eyesight (or being overweight) :)

Regarding what to bring: The medisy's website should outline what to bring, but the most important thing is to bring your vaccination records. You only need a note from your doctor if you have any medical conditions or you're taking some kind of prescription. In my case, all I brought was my vaccination record since I don't have any medical issues and I'm not taking any prescriptions. You want to make sure that your vaccinations are up to date, because if you find out you're missing one at the exam they'll charge you for it, whereas you can get them for free from your family physician. If you can't get a vaccine you can also get titre tests showing your immunity.

I'm going to fetch the link to the Medisy's website in a min...

Edit: Okay, I found the medisy's website here http://www.medisys.ca/index-en.htm# but I can't seem to find anything regarding visa medical exams on it. However, Dr. Seiden's website is excellent for showing you what vaccines you need up to date: http://panelphysicians.com/

CanadaPolice Certificates??

The processing timeline of the RCMP certified criminal records check is over 5 months. What happens when we are at the interview and we don't have the RCMP records check due to the backlog? We just found out that we need it when we received packet 3..

You're a K1 so you schedule your own interview. You can either go to the interview without the police check and then mail it to them after you have the interview (which will add another 4-6 weeks) or you can keep rescheduling your interview on the CSC website until you have the police check ready, and then bring everything and get approved (hopefully) on the same day. You are allowed to reschedule your interview up to 2 days before it takes place (I believe) so even if you're cutting it close you have that option. However, the typical wait time for an interview is 2-3 months and you can only chose what dates they make available on the website, so going with this option is a gamble.

If you go with the second option, take care that all your other documents (passport photos, medical exam, affidavit of support, fiance letter of intent etc.) are current as well.

CanadaPolice Certificates??

Just out of curiosity, if a fiance(e) has a criminal record, are the fingerprints and RCMP check mandatory OR does the local Police Certificate suffice IF the Court disposition/Court record is also submitted at the interview AND a Police certificate and the Court record was previously submitted to the USCIS and the NVC???"

For the applicant/beneficiary: Is the 'small or short form birth certificate' sufficient OR is the 'large or full size birth certificate' required???

I don't know the answer to the first question, but for the birth certificate I think they just want it to have the names of the parents on them.

CanadaPolice Certificates??

I'm just going over the letter for Pkt3 + I have questions about the following:
Police Certificates:
1. Does the Applicant/Beneficiary really need separate " Police certificate from all places lived since age 16 "? Or, does one certificate from his present address/locality suffice, as long as 'the national criminal records repository' was searched?
2. Is fingerprints + RCMP records check required as an absolute??? OR Does the local Police certificate suffice?

Assuming your fiance does not have a criminal record, he does NOT need fingerprints or an RCMP records check. They take fingerprints electronically at the interview. They won't accept fingerprints that you get outside of the interview, I believe. Searching the CPIC is all that's necessary- it's really easy! I don't know about other places in Canada, but I just went to my local police station and all they needed was my addresses for the last 5 years. I filled it out on a form, they checked the information and less than five minutes later I had my police check.

As to "all places lived since age 16"- I will try to find an answer. I believe you only need one if he's lived in Canada since he was 16. I've lived in multiple places in Canada since I was 16 but I only needed one certificate and they accepted it at my interview.

Edit: I'm not familiar with the rest of Canada, but if you're in Ontario you just go to your local Ontario provincial police station (not all of them do police checks- the one closest to me redirected me to one that was just a short bus ride away)- I think other provinces only have the RCMP? He just has to specifically state that he needs a CPIC check or that the national database was checked. He doesn't need any kind of CSI fingerprints-and-DNA-this-takes-6-months-to-get check.

CanadaQuestions about preparing interview items

I'm also preparing my documents for the interview. I was born in quebec so my birth certificate is in french. I assume I need to get that translated.

I feel like i'm studying for a big exam. I hope i get everything right.

I was also born in Quebec and got my long form birth certificate translated and notarized by a commissioner of oath. It was also stamped with a raised ATIO seal (association of translators and interpreters of Ontario). I'm going off of memory here but I believe that either Pkt3 or Pkt4 specifies that the translation must be done by a certified translator, not just anyone who's bilingual, and additionally must be notarized. How strict they are about this, I don't know- I imagine they may be a little more relaxed about it considering the consulate is in Montreal but I wouldn't take any chances. I also *think* the requirements regarding translations are more relaxed for IR1/CR1s than K1s.

I had my interview last month and they kept the notarized copy of my birth certificate translation- so I would say you should get this done. :) And also as someone already noted, it's handy to have a translation with you for future documentation.

I see that you are in Ontario. I got my translation done in Mississauga at the Centre for Education and Training. I made a detailed post about it here: http://www.visajourn...ost__p__4907451 In case you live anywhere near there and you're not sure where to find a certified translator.

CanadaDid I get everything I need for my interview?
This looks like a good list

1. Does Vancouver specifically request that you bring a copy of the I-129F to the interview? I didn't bring mine because my fiance hadn't made a copy of it. If it's not listed as a required document on the day of the interview I assume copies would be sufficient. However if the photos and plane tickets aren't of much value I would suggest you bring them to stockpile with your other evidence. Originals are better than copies. I don't know if the consulate would keep the originals but they at least return the originals of important documents (birth certificate, W2s, etc.) In the off chance that they ask to see evidence of an ongoing relationship I doubt they'd want to keep it but even if they do it seems like an acceptable trade for the approval of your visa.

Some people have been asked for the USC birth certificate at the interview. When I was interviewed in Montreal they did not ask for it, though; likewise, other recent Montreal interviewees weren't asked for it either. Maybe some Vancouver reviews will detail what documents they asked for.

2. Bring a printout of the receipt to show that you paid. You will not need to pay the interview fee again (unless you don't pass the interview and you need to make another appointment, but if your ducks are lined up in a row that shouldn't happen.)

3. Evidence of an ongoing relationship is rarely asked for. Unless your case is particularly complicated or atypical the amount of evidence you have seems sufficient. It never hurts to bring more than less, of course.

CanadaPOE Halifax Airport

POE is for the arriving in the USA not Canada and I would like to suggest giving yourself more time then 45 minutes. You do not know if your flight will depart from Halifax on time, you will need to go thru security again in NYC. I would suggest at least an hour or more for connecting flights.

Someone back me up on this, but I'm pretty sure this is incorrect as Canada is one country where this is an exception. You POE very first thing in Hamilton, not on your connecting flight, so all you should be concerned about is arriving at your FIRST airport early. :) Other countries are different.

Many people, myself included, POE "inside" Canada, for example I POE'd at the Toronto Pearson International Airport. You do not POE once you're physically at an airport inside the USA, you only need enough time to catch your second flight when you make your connection.

Edit: Unless the Hamilton airport isn't set up for this, which is possible. I know at least the Toronto one is though. I didn't have to do anything after I went through immigration in Toronto, just boarded my flight and went through the motions as usual.

We never got an interview date in the time we had given ourselves per my research into average wait times. I am concerned Canada won't let me back in for the interview, so I need to know if she can do it without me provided I give her all the appropriate paperwork I need to provide - letter of intent and whatnot.

Canadamedical question

Hey guys,

I had my K1 medical done in Toronto last week as well. I went there couple of days later and picked up the results ( 1 sealed brown envelope, a piece of paper with some immunization information which was for my records I was told, and a chest x ray). I asked the nurse If I could get a copy of all the results for my records since I'm paying $275 for it, she said she couldn't! Sounds like a few of you have gone through this in Toronto, did you guys only get one brown envelope, I read it somewhere that a lady received two envelopes, it might have been a different county though, I just can't remember, so I thought I'd check with you guys.

When I asked if I met all the K1 visa requirements, she said yes, and If I didn't, they wouldn't be giving me that paperwork! I would appreciate your comments!

Dave

Like SapphireDreams said- I had my medical done in Toronto and I just got one brown envelope that you're not allowed to open and then the x ray (which also came in a brown envelope- perhaps that's why the lady said she got two envelopes) plus a copy of the vaccination sheet. You're not entitled to a copy of the results, I imagine because that could be used to potentially sabotage or skew your case. :P I made a few photocopies of the vaccination sheet "just in case"- it's needed for AOS, don't lose it! The vaccination sheet is referred to as DS-3025.

I was able to book my medical in Toronto quite easily. They replied to an e-mail literally 2 minutes after I sent it :P Stuart/Thea, were you trying to book a medical in Montreal? Just curious in case Dr. Seiden's in Toronto suddenly got a lot slower. Don't have any experience with the Montreal clinics.

And yeah, the whole process is %^&*ing expensive... With the filing fees and travel costs it's run me about $3k and I haven't even gathered the $1k for AOS yet... It's going to be a bit more expensive for you since you have a child :(

CanadaReview: Medical @ Dr. Seiden's Toronto - Sept 26, 2011

If our vaccinations were not up to date would Dr. seiden's office tell us? I had my medical already and they didn't say anything but I don't think I had record of all of my tetanus shots, also only 1 of my 3 Hep B shots was on my child hood record, but then I had 2 twinrix shots recently but did not receive the 3rd shot because I was pregnant at the time, my doctor felt that the 2 would be sufficient since I received them when I a child as well. On my Vaccination Documentation medical worksheet it has two boxes checked, the Application may be eligible for blanket waiver, and Applicant may be eligible for blanket waiver because vaccination not medically appropriate... I really hope it will be okay!! Has anyone had this and received the waiver??

You should be fine- they would've said something if you needed another vaccine. They don't necessarily need to see all your tetanus shots because what matters is that you've had one in the last ten years, and many of the vaccines listed e.g. rotavirus are meant only for babies or 65+ year olds, hence most people get the "waiver" checked off because the vaccines are not "medically appropriate."

CanadaCanadian K-1 and I-94

It certainly seems like I am teaching the lawyer. I had not known about VJ when we hired him and he handled our petition just fine. Unfortunately I paid him up front back then so we are just letting him take care of it now. :bonk:

My passport looks like the above image- it's stapled right next to my visa in my Canadian passport. Your lawyer does not seem very educated :/ It's common for people to hire lawyers only to learn that the lawyer didn't tell them anything they can't find out themselves- or worse, give them false information. On the day of my interview I sat outside the Montreal consulate chatting with a fellow who was there for a fiance visa and his lawyer had told him he'd get his visa on the same day of the interview! I told him his lawyer was wrong. I hated to say it because he obviously spent a lot of money on it and did not seem very familiar with the process but the guy had been seriously misled and didn't even seem to have all the right paperwork. :(

Do keep checking back here to see if you're going about things the right way- although we're not lawyers our collective experiences are very helpful :) So are the guides.

CanadaCanadian K-1 and I-94

My lawyer said and I quote, "None of my other Canadian K-1s have received one."

hmmm, I did a search and see that some Canadians actually didn't receive one and ended up having to go back to get one.

I guess we need to make sure they stamp one in Jenni's passport in case they forget. Sheesh!

Thanks!

Err, you're supposed to get one at POE. It's this little white card thing that gets stapled in your passport next to your visa. Some K1s may have not received one but if that's the case it was out of error on the part of the border patrol officer.

You don't need a lawyer for AOS (or any other part of that process for that matter) unless you have a super complex case, possibly filled with multiple marriages, fraud, jail time, and children.

You also need the I-94 to apply for a SSN. It's an important document even if it doesn't look like it! It's the record that shows you activated your visa.

Edit: Also, I brought American money when I made my POE at Toronto Pearson Airport to pay for the I-94, but they just gave it to me and didn't ask for any money. I guess I was lucky? :P

CanadaHow can i pay visa fee online?

Actually pay at the spot on the interview day is my first choice but the problem is that they said we have to pay the fee before we schedule the interview. I have tried 2 days and never seen the calendar and so i guess the reason is that i have not paid the fee. But when i try to make a payment non of the options works.

My question here is: Can I book appointment without pay?
Thanks for help

When I scheduled my interview back in May, there was a roundabout way of scheduling an interview without paying the fee online. However, according to some VJers the site has changed recently, so I'm unsure of how you'd proceed. I'm pretty sure it's possible, though- the consulate must know that not everyone has a credit card. :/ That's just speculation though.

Montreal is notoriously backlogged and slow at releasing interview dates. Do you see something that says "there are currently no appointments available?" Because that's what everyone else is seeing too- you aren't seeing the calendar simply because they haven't released very many dates and they get snatched up really quickly. It's not because you haven't paid the fee. Some people have been checking the website for 2 months and still haven't been able to get an interview slot.

Also:

From what I have heard from others trying to book their interview is that you cannot make a payment until there are interview spots opened on the calendar. Check as often as you can, the interviews get grabbed up quickly. Good luck!

This is also a possibility which makes sense considering what I wrote above (that no one is currently able to view the calendar.)

I can't help you with the problems related to the site, but just wanted to add that IF you do end up paying on the day of the interview (don't know if that's still an option?) you have to pay in US cash- they won't accept anything else.

Canadadid i get the right info for my police certificate?
As long as it indicates that your name was searched in the national database or CPIC it should be fine. The certificate is valid for one year, also Montreal doesn't accept photocopies of the police check so they will keep one of the originals. Fingerprints are not necessary if you don't have a criminal record- they will take your fingerprints digitally at the interview.

CanadaRenting A Moving Truck for self move to USA
Hopefully this is not too late for you, but I am using Penske from the US. It depends on how close to the border you are, and if the American fiance plans to come up and get you, as is my case. An American is allowed to drive a US rental vehicle across the border into Canada and back to the US, not the other way around.. We found that having my fiance fly into Buffalo and pick up a truck to drive across the border (for a small additional insurance fee) Drive to Kitchener, load up and drive back to Missouri, costs less than having him fly to Toronto and rent from Uhaul. In fact, the Penske trucks are kept in better condition, AND get better mileage, so win win. We found that we'll be saving over 600$ doing it this way, for the added hassle of a few hours drive. They also let you have unlimited mileage, and rent for a week. You can also rent passenger vehicles the same way, if you plan to use a box company to move the bulk of your items....

Okay, I'm at the one month mark before the interview, and despite leaving many many many messages at different times of day for the Dr Seiden group, I don't feel comfortable waiting any longer, and have booked my appointment with Medisys for Oct 21. I got through on the first try, like I did the last time I spoke to them, and am very happy to have that part done with!
