CanadaGood Spaghetti Sauce? And other US substitutions for Canadian foods?
Oh, I do that myself, especially when I have time, but I like to have sauce on hand for when my kid wants to make his own, and while he's 13 now, I still don't see him going to that kind of trouble, which means I will have to do it. I also like to have stuff on hand for just in case... I don't have the room to can my own or I would!

CanadaGood Spaghetti Sauce? And other US substitutions for Canadian foods?
I loved President's Choice, both the taste and the price, but can't find a good spaghetti sauce down here, except for one that cost 7$ a jar, and that's way out of my budget. Any suggestions?

On a plus not, I found a sweeter runnier sauce that kinda tastes like HP called Country Bob's. It's too sweet for eggs, but it's good on corned beef hash and on grilled cheese. No sub for Shreddies yet, but I do like Smuckers Natural peanut butter maybe more than the PC just peanuts, cause they roast them first...

So... (I know our other thread just says what we miss, but I want one to say what to try here instead)

Heinz Beans.... I just buy Busch's Baked Beans, they're expensive but just as good. (maybe better)

Good beers: Boulevard, Blue Moon, Mother's, Schafly, Ska Brewing... oh I keep finding more every week.

Anyone else can chime in and help with the sauce issue?

CanadaFootball (NFL) vs Hockey

English Premier League Soccer just started so Sat and Sun mornings are entirely full as well. above all my husband is fan of the beautiful game.

I count myself lucky that my husband hates soccer, at least it gives me a longer break than that! He IS a golfer, but that only translates to the both of us heading out onto the course, not TV time!

If these are the same pair of Leafs panties my wife has, you should be able to divert his mind from football on any given Sunday.

I save them as a secret weapon if there's ever a conflict on which we watch!

When they had the hockey strike way back, I stopped watching. But Sundin and Domi were just too persuasive and were always yelling at me from the sports pages, "come watch, come watch" It took a friend bringing me back to a game to get watching it again. Besides, I'm a Leaf's fan, so you already know there's very little the players can do to turn me off hockey forever. (there's very little they do to make me a fan... it goes without saying!)

CanadaFootball (NFL) vs Hockey
My husband is a huge football fan, even has a tattoo of his favourite team. (hangs head in shame and says Vikings....)

We even have a purple (yes purple, I call it Barney) couch, with a Vikings logo on it. (one of the FEW things he got in the divorce.)

This is a picture of what I have decorating the top cupboards of my kitchen:
Posted Image
It's a giant football jersey framed and signed by a football player. Around it is several rare photos signed by famous Vikings. We have hundreds of these, but the rest are in storage, but I think we could fill that vaulted wall if we wanted too.

He had curtains. Sheets. He has over 50 ball caps. He has more than 50 jerseys and teeshirts, and sweatshirts. We have a foam finger to wave. We have beer glasses, coffee cups. (he's been collecting for a long time...) We have magazines, books... a football helmet signed by an entire team, and a football signed as well. (it's something special as to what team it is...)

When I moved here I had to get rid of things that didn't fit on the truck, and gave away my Leafs jersey to a friend. ALL I have is a pair of panties.

I enjoy bugging my husband asking him things like, what period is it? (when he says they don't have periods in football I then switch to, okay, sorry, inning then...)
Why don't they pull the goalie to get an extra man out there? Where's the penalty box? Who got the assist? When are they gonna drop the gloves? Playoffs? Cool, is this game 7?

I need to come up with more to bug him, anyone?

(And if you were looking for a thread to discuss which is better, then what are you doing in the Canada forum? This thread is ONLY to discuss why hockey is better.)

I saw that on one of the best sellers lists yesterday and wondered about it. Sounds hilarious. laughing.gif Though I probably won't read it if it contains scary stuff. I always end up having nightmares when I see or read anything scary. sad.gif

It's not really scary, but I guess it depends on how sensitive you are. I'm a horror movie buff, and haven't found a movie in a couple decades that will actually scare me anymore. It's more comedy than horror, really. If you're familiar with Pride & Prejudice at all, just picture the Bennet family sitting down to tea with Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingly, and they are all of a sudden interrupted by zombies. They get up, slice a few heads off with their swords, then sit back down to tea.

The zombies are a comedic addition, and so far there's not much gore. More verbal sparring with each other than sparring with the manky undead. wink.gif

I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and quite enjoying it! laughing.gif Here is a brief synopsis from the website:

QUOTE
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton-and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers-and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead.

CanadaMontreal August 2011 Interviews!
PROOF OF PAYMENTI have almost everything ready- I'm just waiting on my fiance to mail some stuff to me. I think I went a little overboard, but IMO you can't go overboard in being prepared for this interview. :P

By the way, is proof of payment (I paid the $350 fee online) just the confirmation email you get immediately after paying?

What I currently have (things with a + I have at least one photocopy of):

unopened medical folder and x ray
my original birth certificate +
ATIO birth certificate translation, certified by commissioner of oath +
police certificate +
all packet 3 forms, including DS 160 confirmation page +
appointment confirmation email +
MRV fee receipt email +
letter of intent from me
copy of biographic info page from passport +

credit card statement showing payment of $350 MRV fee
2 passport photos
original packet 3
original packet 4

Evidence of a relationship:
4 photos of us
boarding passes from my fiance
credit card statement from when I went to the States and bought stuff
boarding passes and train tickets from when I went to the States
receipts that shows my fiance purchased stuff in Canada (they have his name on it)
printouts of our flight itineraries

western union receipts with both our names printed on them- My fiance has sent me money frequently, although I dunno if this looks weird or suspicious at the interview because I can't recall what I needed the money for exactly, just that I was running low on cash. Once I had to get my wisdom teeth removed though and he sent me money for that, so I kept the receipt from the dentist so it could be matched up with the western union receipt. I don't plan on showing them this evidence unless they ask for it.

For the I-129F, I didn't have a photocopy of the original package, but had some files on the computer from when we filled out the forms. So we have copies of:
the actual I-129F application
my biographic information form
my fiance's biographic information form

What I don't currently have, but I'm expecting to receive in the mail from my fiance:

original birth certificate
photocopy of birth certificate
letter of intent
photocopy of biographic info page from passport

Affidavit of support's evidence:
letters from the bank
letters from his employer
pay stubs
2008 & 2009 tax transcripts
2010 tax return- this is what I'm worried about. They were filed electronically so he just has a print out of the return and his W2 but nothing else. I asked him to sign all the pages just because it seemed like a good idea. I hope this is sufficient because he's not able to get a transcript for 2010 on time.
<some other stuff about his 401K but I can't remember what it is exactly>

Congrats to everyone who got an interview! It's showing August 12th right now.

MY GOODNESS....YOU MEAN I COULD"VE KEPT CHECKING TO SEE IF THERE WAS AN EARLIER INTEVIEW DATE OTHER THAN MY AUGUST 3 DATE? IT WAS AN 82 DAY PRISON SENTENCE COUNTING DOWN THAT LONG. 11 MONTHS AND 2 WEEK TIME LINE...IS THIS NORMAL? I WONDER HOW MANY VJ'S GAVE UP. WHAT IS SO FRUSTATING IS THEY MAKE US WAIT SOOOOO LONG (82 DAYS LONG FOR THE INTERVIEW, NOT COUNTING THE INITIAL DELAY'S WITH THE RFE)...AND THEN TO PUT A RESRICTION OF 90 DAYS TO GET MARRIED......ARGHHHHHH, NEVER VENTED LIKE THIS, BUT THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT THE MORE FRUSTRATING IT IS...I GUESS IT IS PRE-INTERVIEW JITTERS....BUT I UNDERSTAND THE AOS AND REMOVAL OF CONDITIONS IS ANOTHER WAITING GAME....

I'm sending good vibes your way :( But, just imagine how good it'll feel to finally see your fiance and know that you don't have to spend any more time apart from them. You're almost there, hang in there :)

I was referring to the interview letter - - it's necessary to have that for the medical and, of course, entry to the consulate for the interview. Mine has just arrived by email so we're very relieved and happy. Good luck everyone with your own interviews!

Is the interview letter the same as the confirmation e-mail you get right when you schedule an interview on the CSC website? Cause that's all I got...

For the interview in MTL, that is. For the medical they asked for P3 or P4.

Congrats to those who got August appointments!

I just booked my hotel (Hyatt Regency) and bought VIA train tickets. The train tickets were on sale, wooh  The hotel is a bit pricey (390 for two nights, tax included) but whatever. I could've done it more cheaply (booked a motel and took Megabus which is super cheap), but I'm spoiled. >_> I didn't feel like doing tons of research on hotels and the Hyatt was 4/5 stars on 177 reviews according to google maps.

My medical exam is tomorrow. I was going to take the GO train from Brampton but seeing as I wouldn't be first in line ( ) if I did that I arranged for a cab to drive me there at a flat rate. I can't really afford the $70 but I don't really give a damn at this point, haha.

I'm a little nervous because my most recent vaccinations are handwritten onto my record by my doctor but MOST of my older vaccines are on the "official" record so hopefully it's okay. *sigh*

I'm almost glad my interview is on August 22nd because should something happen at my medical at least it gives me a decent amount of time to fix it. I'd still rather not though. I'm done with all this running around, going to Mississauga multiple times to get a police certificate and a birth certificate translation, and going all the way to Front street in the early morning. :dead: I know it's hardly worth complaining about, especially when other VJers are so much farther away from the consulate and doctor's offices, but I just want to veg out and be lazy now.

Let me know how your medical goes ralyse :) I hope it works out alright.

I'm somewhat worried about my vaccination documents because although I have an official one that lists most of them, a few were missing. So when I went to my family doctor she wrote in the other ones I got by hand and signed it and wrote her phone number on the page, rather than fill out a new sheet. I suppose that should be good enough but it still makes me nervous.

Can you get a new vaccination sheet from any office, or does it have to be your family doctor?

So, tonight I leave for my medical. It's super early and I'm about an hour-ish from Toronto so my mom and I are driving there tonight. I'm a little nervous (although I'm no totally sure why) but I'll be glad to have it finished. I'm not good with bloodwork  but that should be quick and only a small portion of it. I'll let everyone know how it went!

Good luck! I'm sure it'll go by smoothly.

I haven't yet... still refreshing, seeing if there's earlier dates available, although I highly doubt it!

Right now I'm fighting with the Via rail website. It seems that it gives me errors whenever I try to find tickets- "one of our providers is currently unavailable, thus we cannot process your request at the moment." It looks like it's just badly programmed or something, I hope it gets fixed soon. :( It's been like that for a few days but I've bought tickets off their website before without a problem. I want to leave on Sunday since my appointment is on Monday but I don't know if they run trains on Sundays. I'm guessing they do but who knows?

Have you decided on a hotel yet ralyse? And does anyone else happen to be traveling by train? I live in the GTA and used to take the train to Windsor and found it to be an overall pleasant experience. A plane is faster but when you factor in the time spent at the airport and all the annoyances that goes along with it, not to mention it's more expensive (I believe) I'd sooner take a train. The train station is also closer to the consulate, so I can save on taxi fare.

I guess it's time to research the POE and AOS parts of the process! I'm eager to cross the border but at the same time 3 months is a good amount of time to prepare and not too long seeing as we're (presumably) used to long distance relationships hehe.

CanadaFlight from Pearson at 6:53 AM, when should I arrive?
Immigration doesn't open at Pearson until 5:30am IIRC. You might want to call and ask- it could be tight if you can't get processed until then.

I POEd at Pearson with a 12pm flight and got there at 6am. Immigration took about 20 minutes, there were only a couple other people ahead of me.

Hey! Pearson is a huge airport and can be busy. I'd tack on an extra hour to the 1.5 hours just to be safe. Which airport do you fly into in the U.S? Once you land, that's likely where the questions will begin.

No, Toronto Pearson airport does customs processing right in the airport (most other airports don't). The questions and paperwork happen inside Pearson, not in an American airport. Once you land in America all you'll have to do is collect your luggage and leave.

CanadaPolice check for multiple places of residence.
You only need one check if you haven't lived outside of Canada for a significant amount of time. By the way, I got mine done at a police station in Mississauga for $50, which I believe is cheaper than commissionaires. I went to the local station in Brampton and asked where to go, so they redirected me to 22 division. I showed up, filled out the form (which asks for your addresses from the last 5 years) and then handed it to a lady who stamped it. I was in and out in 5 minutes. It might be easier just to ask your local OPP station to get the check done.

Also, since it's commonly asked around here, you DO NOT need to get fingerprints done unless you have a criminal record. You just need to have your name and date of birth searched in the CPIC or national records repository. Also, Montreal will not accept photocopies of your police check, they will keep the original at the interview.

CanadaConfused about Required Vaccinations
Pneummococcal is only for 65+ year olds or people with respiratory problems, so you're okay there. MMR is important and you've had both doses of that so that's good too. Polio is probably considered medically inappropriate for your age. It's rare when an applicant has received ALL those vaccinations on the USCIS site; they understand that some are given at certain ages.

For the medical exam, this is what 18-64 year olds require: http://www.panelphys.../Pages/Age6.htm You seem good to go.

CanadaK-1 Haven't Heard from Montreal yet?
Once you have a case number (will look something like MTL123456) you can call department of state to inquire about the status of your case. A couple weeks after you've mailed your packet 3 to Montreal, start calling DOS to ask if your packet 4 has been logged. Once it's been logged you can book your interview online. Montreal can be very slow sending out Pkt 3 and Pk4; sometimes they just don't mail them out at all, so DOS is more reliable. You don't have to physically receive Pkt 4 in the mail to book an interview.

I don't think the time stamps are required but they're good to have since technically your photos are supposed to be current within 6 months or something. I also recommend you print your case number on the back of each photo (just put your case number on everything, LOL!)

You can try using this website http://www.epassportphoto.com/ to save money. If you have a camera you can take photos and upload them, then tweak them on that website so they look right and then print them out somewhere cheap like a Kodak self serve kiosk at wal mart and cut them out.

Pretty sure Montreal has always said extra persons are not allowed (it said that on my Packet 4 when I got it last year) yet fiances/spouses are still often let in if they have a passport. For what it's worth, when I had my interview last August there were many couples let inside the consulate.

CanadaI recieved approved notice on May 30th, so What's next?

Thanks...So one last question and then I will head to preparing for my documents...in the package 3, you only need to put the forms and the checklist in it right? No documents should be attached. (just ignoring what is said on the DS-156K...the following documents must be attached in order to apply for a fiance visa: birth certificate....and bunch stuff). So even though I haven't got all the documents on the checklist, can I still send that page?

Yes, you ONLY send the forms, the checklist, 2 american style passport photos, and a photocopy of the biographic info page of your passport. You DO NOT attach the birth certificate, police certificate etc. to your packet 3- instead you bring those documents with you to the interview, along with photocopies of them (Montreal keeps the copies).
